gratz! I'm one of the few people to retire WoW willingly and with little withdrawal symptoms. Personally I don't really see how a WoW movie can work. Will the characters randomly break out in dancing? Blizzard execs...I got a better idea, it's called Warcraft 4. MAKE IT HAPPEN. Thanks for Starcraft 2, I'm eagerly awaiting release.

Blizzard Can Do Anything
by Vaebn

07:59:22 AM
Blizzard is just about the most respected software company out there. They have an ethic for excellence that is just flat-out unmatched by anyone else in the business. If ANY gaming company can adapt one of its products into a movie, it's Blizzard (not to mention their own in-game cinematics have been the best in the business for over a decade, as far as I know). Anything Blizzard touches turns to gold, or they don't do it for fear of hurting their impossible reputation. I'm not a WoW fan (though I'm hyperventilating over Starcraft II...), but I'm sure this movie will be great.

don't get your hopes up- look at the precedent when games are adapted:

Final fantsy- abandoned pretty much everything that made the games good for some neo-hippy drivel.

Resident Evil (I still get cross thinking about this) rewrote the concept taking everything out except for virus zombies and mutants (and umbrella)- they even made up new heroes for the first film- and lumbered it with some piss poor amnesia plot.

Silent Hill was probably the best (at least it got the atmosphere OK) but still lumbered the audience with hours of exposition,

Mortal Kombat was alright-ish but struggled through lack of storyline,

As for Alone in the dark, the less said about any Uwe Boll abombination or piss like Super Mario/ Streetfighter the better.

Have I missed any?

You must be joking. 90% of the Warcraft lore is directly ripped off from Tolkein and Warhammer. It's like a fucking madlib. They just erased the nouns and made a name generator. This movie is going to be shite, just like everything else Blizzard has done since D2.

It looks awesome! Different from how it looked in the game but I don´t mind. It looks much cooler and that is not always the case when they try to adapt something from a game. Man now I´m hyped. Hope they have Arthas, one of the coolest characters from a game.

I said the same thing before I played warcraft 3, and before warcraft 3 the frozen throne when Arthas becomes the new Lich King. With all the combined lore of warcraft 3 and world of warcraft Blizzard have created one of the most fascinating mythologies in any game. Unlike the Final Fantasy games and their convuluted storylines the lore of warcraft is consistent and at the same time constantly evolving. Sure there are ideas that come from Tolkien, but that is the case with most high fantasy. Take the Harry Potter books as an example and you will find hundreds of small similarities with Tolkien. There is not one evil dark lord like Melkor/Morgoth and later Sauron, or like Voldemort. There are races and nations both wordly and otherwordly, some are evil some are good and some are in between. That´s what I like the most about the warcraft mythology.

Who is financing this? More people played DOOM than WofW at its peak, but DOOM only made $30 mill boxoff. There's no reason to get all siked off this one image. And there's no proof this will be a good movie either. Fucking gaming nerds are the worst. I'm with Moriarty - if you are over 24, please explain how you find time to invest in WofW. Which brings me to my other point, to be profitable this film will have to appeal to young dorks. That might work for LotR (sucked, btw), but not this.

FYI- there are currently 9 million ACTIVE Warcraft subscribers. It was announced this week that a new expansion for the game will be released next year so expect those numbers to rise. Whats the appeal you ask? Hard to say... at first it was the interactive qualaties with friends and the pure fun of the game itself. Then you level up to 22 and it started to become an addiction to be the best warrior on my server. ANd to be the best you have to invest lots of time to get great gear. Sooo ya you get sucked in..oh well best $14 I spend a month. BTW- I know for a FACT that this will be one of the best CGI movies ever made. I can sit here and try to explain why 9 million people play Warcraft but you still wouldn’t get it and you would still respond with the “im better than you” attitude. I could tell you about the various PVP battlegrounds, dueling, or fighting in 3v3 Arena's, the 10-25 person raids or the city attacks on the other faction but you still would ask more questions because you really have no idea whats going on. So, instead I will leave you with this...your a pathetic human being that must mock others to make yourself 'feel' better and theres no point of me wasting anymore time with you, just like im sure many others have done in your life.

Yeah, as for that "I'm better than you" bullshit you just started spouting, well that's interesting. I don't recall ever saying I was better than anybody (don't think I ever will, either). That's your interpretation of my previous posts? I was just wondering why WoW is such a phenomenon, the same way I try to fathom why D&D was such a phenomenon back in the day. If you want to defend something that you like and participate in, that's cool, but being unable to explain the appeal isn't.

by SoylentMean

but he can't, he's at 70 already!!!! OK, I've played videogames before (shocker there), but I've never been big on any game where you couldn't just get up and walk away. So I stuck to fighting games, sports games, and first person shooters. RPGs always seemed like too much damn work for something that's supposed to be fun. So, anybody who actually plays these games, (World of Warcraft in particular), can you give a reasonable response as to why you play? Hell, just saying they're fun is reason enough. I just find it funny that nobody here(especially masterless) has fallen back on that old standby to rationalize spending so much time on one game. It's like some kind of cult, only they're too scared to miss a guild raid or some other such nonsense to come and kidnap you and make you join. It's a safe cult, just still creepy.

Warcraft's storyline is hardly the greatest thing since sliced bread, when it comes to fantasy. In many ways it is a contrived mess of themes stuffed into a mindless Saturday morning cartoon format. If I were to draw a comparison, WoW would be Schumacher's Batman Forever. It's sad, because it COULD be Nolan's Batman Begins. Hopefully their director here will remove some of the cutesy fluff and take things back down to street level, get some grittiness, pull no punches. No purple paladins, please.

I'm still laughing. The leader guy asks for percentage of survival, which is funny unto itself, but then he gets an actual response. "Can I get a number crunch?" Ha Ha Ha, Ha Ha Ha!!!

Come on, DerLanghaarige, I thought the WoW SP was one of the funniest episodes I've seen. It had a good storyline and was a clever way to tap into the mania. Playing off of cultural phenomenas is why SP will be continuously relevant. Also, I've never played the game but any recent gamer or ex-gamer type can relate to it. And a WoW "commercial"? It didn't pull any punches with how it displayed the "health effects" of playing the game. "So are you going to run around outside, throwing a ball around, or are you going to sit down at your computer, and do something that matters?"

Have you seen the way people dress on WOW. The huge weapons would make some of the mallets in "Hawk the Slayer" look small. CGI "Hawk" sized weapons, "Red Sonya" outfits, a healthy dose of "Krull" hair, and a batshit epic "Dragonslayer" like plot. Ah... I need to que up the VCR.

I'm not going to spend time describing it. Read some original reviews. I think its one of the most amazing productions in film/software ever conceived. You create your little character and after that; EXPLORE! The details are revealed as you get deeper into the game. Yes, it is like crack. Yes, beyond exploration, its all about leveling up and getting better goodies. But if you have any interest in virtual reality, fantasy and video games then WoW is an achievement far beyond what words can describe. P.S.; I haven't played WoW in ages, lost my interest - but still have mucho respect for what Blizzard created.

I mean, evil God Titan travelling the universe slaying evil becomes corrupted by a race of vampire demons and decides to fuck the universe, so he recruites them and blue demonic aliens, then decides to create and intergalactic crusade to destroy all life in the universe. Some of the good blue demon people decide to abandon the evil blue people and escape to the orc homeworld and settle down with the orcs. The Burning Crusade discovers the good blue people and decide to turn the orcs against them, almost bring the poor blue good demon people to extinction. When all hope is lost, the Orcs, now evil and corrupted, rip open a portal to azeroth where humans and elves and shit live, and all hell breaks loose. There's a shit ton more, but I yeah, I just wanted to point out that that is TOTALLY TOLKEIN.

Didn't see that coming at all... meh. Cue another movie where orcs are bad news... anyone who looks a little odd who isn't an elf is badder news and humans are nothing but goodness and light. It'll make a bundle no doubt from the fanbase alone, but I'm not expecting it to be interesting in any way, shape or form. A shame, considering the neat backstory the game has.

I think Flip63Hole has hit on something.

While I played WoW (having retired it some time ago for other interests), I was constantly intrigued by what might be around the next corner. Roaming through an as yet unexplored world (at least from the perspective of a neophyte gamer) was what kept me going for hours on end.

Now, I understand that it’s not as though there isn’t a world out there in Real Reality ™ worth exploring. But let’s be serious, how many of us are ever going to go and backpack throught the foothills of Himalayan mountains or find some hidden mountain highway in the Andes commissioned two millennia ago by an Incan god-king?

The world has gotten so much smaller (“No, Jack. The world hasn’t gotten smaller, there’s just less in it.”), that there’s a feeling of no longer being able to discover something new and vital. Well, anyway, that’s why I lingered in the Warcraft world for as long as I did.

The problem for me was that after a while the repetitive nature of the quests (find blank, kill X number of creatures guarding blank, return blank to quest-giver, change environment and creatures, repeat…) left me wanting. I’m not exactly sure what it was that I felt missing—a deeper sense of an unfolding story?—but after a while the variation on a theme grew tiresome.

As yet, video games don’t offer the kind of full emersion of experience that a movie does because video games substitute flash and gimmickry for story and meaning. I suppose the best counter-argument to that is “What the fuck are you talking about nimrod? Video games are for blastin’ stuff.” Well said, asshole make-believe talk-backer, well said. And right, no less. Asshole.

But World of Warcraft is on the way to bridging the divide, that’s for sure. The mythology is there, now they just have to figure out how to weave narrative strands into the gaming experience and they’ll have my money again.

(And I think it very interesting that in a time when Hollywood is more and more obsessed with flash and gimmickry, the gaming world is more and more enamored of storytelling. There’s a lazy, liberal-arts-college thesis paper lurking somewhere in that paradox.)

Oh, and the movie could be okay, I guess. It’ll probably suck, though.

I know they probably won't do the plot from warcraft 3 but I wish they would. It's an elegant way to let humans AND orcs be the good guys. Maybe sites running stories about it should do the same? Especially when it's right there in the copy you're posting. Calling the movie "World Of Warcraft" would make as much narrative sense as calling Episode IV "World Of Star Wars" (or, y'know, "Episode IV".) Anyway, shame it's from an Alliance perspective - hope that's not exclusively the case. I also really REALLY hope it's not live-action.

I know this isn't a resident evil tb but bear with me.

Resident Evil represents all that is wrong with Hollywood's attempts to adapt/ cash in on something. They see a property that has a massive core fanbase. They recognise that there is money to be made from said property. They have no understanding at all of why said property is popular, in fact they have a sort of mild contempt for said property. They buy it, and then adapt it in such a way that they think is "improving it" but really they are breaking it down and rendering it unrecognisable. End result: a complete fuck-up with all the redeeming features of a public lice infection in a brothel.

I'd rather Predator 3 than Alien 5
by Spandau Belly
Aug 7th, 2007
10:16:45 AM
I really think a third Predator film directed by Neil Marshal could further expand on the Predator culture and tell a new story about some new hero fighting a Predator in an even more futuristic setting. I loved the whole Escape From New York feel of Predator 2 and would love to go even futher into a bleak violent future. I'd love to see Jet Li as the hero in the next one.

As for Alien 5, I actually thought Alien 3 was a logical and satisfying conclusion to the story. Alien 4 felt like the begining of a new trilogy. Weaver was playing a new character (half Ripley, half Alien DNA) and did a good job acting differently (more aggressive and more reptilian in her movements), but even though it was an alright movie, it was pointless and totally disconnected from real Alien TRILOGY. If they did Alien 5, they'd have to do something really inventive with it.

But hey, I doubt either of these films will happen, but I'd see both. I still vote for Predator 3.

BTW, I have not seen Alien Versus Predator. And nobody has advised me to see it.

Blizzard is one of the few companies that can drag me back to wasting hours on the computer. I never played WoW but I was a huge fan of Warcraft II and III. While most videogames steal from other films unabashedly, Blizzard actually combines so many influences as well as original ideas that they end up with something new. Few videogames can claim to be original stories that would lend themselves to a film adaptation (one of the reasons most of the films fail). For the most part game adaptations are just a bad idea. Hell, they should just make it computer animated and let Blizzard's team make the film. Of course if that was the case then it wouldn't come out for another twenty-five years or so.

work much better than Alien 5 or PvA 2. They've run out of ideas for the Alien films. If I had known that Alien 4 was going to be so shitty I would have given Alien 3 a little more slack. PvA feels like a cheap marketing trick, instead of an epic film drawing on two rich mythologies (as it should have been). I went into PvA hoping it was so bad it was funny, but I only laughed once of twice. It was so bad it was just boring. Predator feels as if there could be more stories, especially if they decided to go further into the future. I doubt Fox would allow a more science fiction bent in these films because they want it to appeal to the horror film audience so I don't seen anything like that happening anytime soon. Until then, these properties are dead to me.

I don't hate Alien 4 as much as the rest of you. I actually just watched it last week and it's an okay movie, but I think it was totally pointless still feel that the REAL Alien story was the trilogy, not the quadrilogy.

Did anybody else think Alien 4 was headed for a cliffhanger ending and then changed its mind and decided to wrap everything up? I was totally expecting the end to be Ripley arriving on Earth to see the Aliens had already beaten her there or something Planet of the Apes-ish to set up Alien 5 like they did with Terminator 3, which was also a totally pointless but well-enough made sequel.

because it is fun to play, fun to explore in--IF airport for the win!, fun to kick some motherfucker's ass when he's stealing your mobs by aoe'ing the shit out of them, etc. look for me on destro. i will not dance on any mailboxes to try and get your gold. i'd like to add that i'm also a girl who is a) not fat and b) cute and i play mostly to keep in touch with real life friends who live in NYC--i'm in LA. since i hate TV, that fifteen bucks i would have spent on a dish goes to the game. having said that? best RPG ever, ever, was knights of the old republic. lucas should have made THAT movie. will i see this movie? only if my lvl 70 blood elf rogue girl is in it.

So your saying you only spend $13 a month for cable tv? Your either full of shit or only get the History channel and Oxygen. Nice try dude but you probably spend more a month on tampons than you would a warcraft account.
