...because they still have the occasional good show. All those "I love the 70's, 80's..." shows are good, "Best Week Ever" is consistenly hilarious, and even the "World Series of Pop Trivia" is worth a watch. MTV on the other hand has squat. Okay, I do get a kick out of "Pimp My Ride" now and again, but I see that on MTV2 so it doesn't count. Has anyone heard of the new trash TV show on BET "We Got To Do Better"? I've heard interesting things...

The majority of VH1's shows seem to be the 70s and 80s shows along with lists, Top Ten Celebrity Colonoscopies, etc, etc. These shows are nothing but some narration over red carpet footage, still photographs and any video clips cheap enough for the network to pay for. Then add a couple of barely-successful comedians to insert sarcastic, "ironic" comments. Virtually no actual content. The rest of their shows have the new theme: "Exploit has-been celebrities' chronic need for any attention whatsoever, while mocking them at the same time." MTV may actually show more music videos than VH1 now, and that's saying something!

Which chick is going to be off her meds in this one? This show is up there with homeless boxing on the exploitation chart. I'd kind of like to see them just pick random names out of the phonebook so that we'd get a little less of that. But then I suppose that most 20-somethings aren't listed. I hate this show, but I watch it anyway because nothing is a greater motivator for me to plan carefully for retirement than to see the devil-spawn that's rising through the ranks to destroy what little we have left.

MTV's ratings are in the shitter. To the point that there was talk last year of shutting down MTV2 altogether. Instead Viacom ended up cutting a bunch of jobs with no notice. The point is, it's not the pop culture phenomenon it used to be, it's just another cable channel, and their once solid demographic of teenage viewers has all but completely abandoned the channel. So, from a "who gives a shit?" standpoint, this news is as meaningul as announcing what episode of Stark Trek: TNG will rerun on Spike TV this weekend.

Aeon Flux, The Maxx, Sifl and Olly, Beavis and Butthead, hell even Dharia was funny at times. As I recall the last Real World I ever kept up with was Real World 2..I was 15 at the time. At least back then it didn't seem nearly as phony and scripted as it is now. Reality TV is dead, stop beating the horse already.
