The effects are actually damn good, the lighting's been a bit off, and getting used to different actors as the primary rolls has been iffy but overall it was worth watching and they've even had DC Fontanna write for them, DC being one of the writers for the original series and more.. Its a very impressive project for fans. Paramount has actually decreed that so long as they make no money off of the project they won't object it.

Yes, they've become nerds of the ultimate degree -- which isn't necessarily a good thing.

I don't know, this is just one of those things that I don't get. I mean, it's not like they're investing all this time and effort for some sort of financial reward (in fact, they're forbidden to). So the idea that a bunch of adults -- not kids, mind you, which I could understand, but fully grown adults -- actually feel the need to spend their money and their time creating full-blown TREK sets with functioning lights and do-dads in their garage, as well as forking out even more cash to plug in good looking SFX work, all so they can play act as if THEY are The Shat or Spock just seems "off" to me. I mean, the whole adult dress-up and play-act thing is simply one thing I just don't get.

Hey, if it's Halloween and you're going to a party, fine, knock your socks off. If it's the weekend and my girlfriend wants to dress up in a slutty vinyl Batgirl costume complete with thigh high boots, hey, all the better since it'll knock my socks off. But in the end, when I look at these guys pretending to be the Trek characters and actually thinking they're continuing on the saga, as if anyone with an IQ over 14 would actually be buying into that, it just reminds me of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog in that clip where he's at the premiere for ATTACK OF THE CLONES and is mocking all the grown adults -- again, accent on grown adults -- who are dressed up as characters, too, and looking rather dorky.

"Oh man! Look at this one! He's like some sort of super nerd. It's like he was built from the parts of lesser nerds. He's some sort of UBER nerd now!"

it can't be that bad. It's the ultimate form of fan fiction, and hey it seems to be receiving a bit of press coverage. Furthermore, I bet you would be VERY surprised to find out how many people actually watch their episodes. And I dunno, but maybe it will lead them all to jobs in the actual film and television industry. These people are creatively talented, energetic, and motivated. I say power to them, hell if I lived near them, I'd probably try to help out. It's hella fun to make movies.

I think the point is, they're producing something impressive that is entertaining thousands of people. Financial reward is not the only kind of measure of worthiness of an activity. I've seen these shows too. Although they are funny in a way, let's make a couple of things clear: 1. The effects are not "great." They are at about the same level as a game I have called Army Men RTS. Everything looks plastic and has no sense of scale or mass. Inertia is non-existent. Plus, they've just made some horrible effects choices that only make things worse...like the Enterprise doing barrel rolls. 2. These people have not "done something with their lives." They have so NOT done something with their lives that it is hilarious to think about, in a pathetically funny sort of way.

Just a counterpoint to the previous post; I've seen a few of these, and I'm impressed. Of course, they aren't as polished as the Original Series, but they are a nice tribute: a TRIBUTE, from fans, FOR fans. If you can't appreciate it, don't watch it. I applaud Cawley and his crew for what they've done for the fans and admirers of the Original Series, and I wish them all the best. As a previous poster stated, if I lived closer, it would be a lot of fun to work on a project like this, instead of sitting on my ass bitching about how "geeky" & "hokey" it looks.

I have seen a consistent step forward in quality on all fronts. Acting, Direction, Story, Set Design, Lighting. etc. Each episode brings them closer to being indistinguishable from any production produced by a major studio. And it is sounding like this episode will be the one that really brings them to that point. Having said all this, even their very first episode (Come what May), for any flaws that you can find (IE: Crawley's Elvis hair...something that was unavoidable given his work schedule at the time of production), it was still way more impressive than any ST fan film production that had been produced so far. And because of the advancements in computer generated effects they where able to create effects that where light years ahead of the original series, giving fans a "What if" look at what the TOS would have been like with better effects long before CBS Paramount rolled out "Trek Remastered". Without even considering the improvements in later episodes, it was already an impressive effort……Oh, and mr_sinister7381, to quote Lobo…..”Bite me Fanboy”.
As for the acting in NV

I’ll admit that at first it was disconcerting (to say the least) seeing someone else playing these iconic roles. In their pilot episode the acting varied, some of it good some of it weak. I thought that the guy doing Spock was doing a particularly good job, especially given the enormity of the task (large shoes to fill and all). But with each episode the acting has gotten better. I think everyone made great strides with the last one “To Serve All My Days”. In time I got used to seeing someone else playing these characters. And I also remember reading something that James Crawley wrote where he said; We have had more than one James Bond, more than one Superman, and more than one Batman, so why can’t their be more than one Kirk or Spock? Something we may as well all get used to with the new movie coming.

For those asking “Why do this when there is no financial reward”? Well if you go to the New Voyages website the answer is obvious. Paramount already licenses fan fiction, the producers of New Voyages hope that licensing fan films will be the next step. And it may happen. I have to wonder if the reason that this latest episode will not be available for download (like the previous episodes where), is because Paramount will make it an official direct to DVD release at a later time.
So it's not available for download, huh?

Didn't know that. Interesting, since the whole premise of the project was creating webisodes that were freely available to all.

But I agree, it seems as if they're getting better with each episode. Although I wish they had waited and done the Doomsday war episode in two parts as originally conceived. It seemed a tad rushed in the one hour format.

Okay sure they're not making money, but Paramount might decide to finally start direct to DVD production in the future, and these guys will easily get the job. Also, and this is probably the most practical DEMO REELS! Anyone involved in video production has one and these will look quite impressive to perspective employers, especially if they do it on their own time and money. I remember seeing Gabriel Köerner on the documentary Trekkies when he was working on his fan film. A friend of mine started bashing him by saying "Come on, there's no way ANYONE would show his little film" my response was "but it would sure look great on a demo reel". Sure enough that's EXACTLY what he did. Now he's working on Battlestar Galactica and was nominated for an Emmy. Believe me I've seen tons of demo reels when we're looking to hire people, but it's the ones that show this type of dedication that stand out.
Surely not!

Many of the posts in this thread betray a lack of investigative ability. Posting nonsense without knowing anything about the subject other than your own presuppositions just makes you look stupid. That said... New Voyages is not the best thing ever. Not even the best fan film ever. But there is much worse out there. The level of production detail that's going into it is pretty incredible, actually. The Bridge set is a meticulous, precise re-creation based on the Paramount blueprints. Inexperience has marked much of their earlier efforts, in terms of acting, story construction, writing, and cinematography. But each episode DOES take a big step forward in improving all those things. New Voyages has not arrived, but it seems to be carrying on a dream in such a way that its attracting more quality personnel and Star Trek production alum with each new episode. Go to the website and check out their news announcements and such to see who is coming on board. Bashing it is stupid, especially coming from people who live to bash internerds on a fucking messageboard all day. Saying NV is the best thing ever or that it is full on high quality is... uneducated. But saying that its fun if taken for what it is, saying that it is an achievement for its particular subgenre of medium, and saying that it is good and getting better under those terms is entirely appropriate.

I saw a couple of these. They were interesting and I was amazed at what they could do on such a small budget. The stories and acting could use a little work, but then you could say that about the original show. There seem to be a lot of people here going on about how uncool it was of them to do this. First off, you're posting on AICN, so STFU. Second, you'll grow up in a few years and realize that only losers obsess on what it is to be cool. The rest of us don't care much what other people think. It's called emotional security. It's like when closeted gay guys go on an on about some chic's "knockers." You ain't foolin' no one with that act.

i love it... TOS is the future of Trek because imo all the series have sucked ass except TOS. sure, the Kirk and Spock actors are awful, i can handle that they dont look like the originals but they just deliver poor performances. the last episode with Chekhov sucked pretty bad i will be the first admit. and get this... the story has Chekhov age 30 years, umm. i hope they produce a better episode for Sulu. i really hope they get smart about their effects and reuse more shots or try something artsy that does not require animators taking so long, i cant help but think this is what is hurting their schedule. the production schedule is so slow, at this rate they will finish a 22 episode season 4 in 22 years. its a fan series, i think most people would rather see more episodes than polished space effects that still do not compare to studio quality.

Trekkie That Hates Trekkies
by bobchuckx
Aug 1st, 2007
12:12:19 AM
I've been a fan of Trek since before I could read. I would insist to my brother that Trek was on at any given hour of the day and demand to watch it. I would attempt to prove my claim by picking random symbols from the TV Guide (later I would recognize these symbols as "words") that I believed indicated Trek was on. Anyway I was 3 and that was 1975. So I was this kid who had memorized all the episodes and production numbers, etc. etc. and had a pretty decent collection of paraphenalia by 13. I grew up in a small rural town in Idaho so there wasn't anyone to share my love of Trek with, and I eventually decided to hook up with some other Trekkies to talk about the series, the books, the movie, the new series, and really just have someone else to try and speak Klingon to. I was hugely disappointed with this introduction to the culture of Star Trek and I have been with almost every encounter I've had. There's this terrible classicism and self referential bullshit that most fans seem to jiz all over. In Harms Way brought back all of that disappointment. The writers were trying to force too many "canon moments" into too short a time, as if they had something to prove, rather than telling a new and compelling story. Roddenberry's Trek had nothing to do with the triteness of memorizing kirk's safe's combination. It was about illustrating human society and behavioral archetypes through an update of the greek drama structure (with a dash of Wagon Train). In Harms Way barely tells a story. It spends more time trying to get Trekkies to point at the screen and try to yell first "That's from episode 28 City On The Edge of Forever". Anyway I think the idea of The New Voyages is a great one. I just hope the writing gets better. And they should hire a wardrobe person to get the shirts to fit right. Its hard to take someone seriously when they're wearing a shirt that is two sizes too big.

seriously, why are these fan-made episodes even being talked about? I salute their ability to even make something remotely entertaining due to their lack of budget, but let's be honest...they SUCK compared to the official episodes. The acting is embarrassing at best, the costumes look like shit (that's assuming they even fit), and the special effects or "ok" at best. Finally, whatever episodes they make are not official canon and therefore don't really count in the long-term scheme of all things Trek. So yeah, I'll just wait for the next Trek movie for my next Star Trek fix. Until then, I have many "official" episodes and movies on DVD to watch.

I don't get bashing these guys for doing fan films. We don't bash people for doing community theater.

...and one that I had never considered. Those community theater assholes really need an ass kicking! Just who do they think they are? ;)
if you're doing it, why not expand it to a TV movie

would get more buzz... But if the story is meant to be brief, and if the budget isn't there for more shooting days, then it is what it is. It just seems to me that when in Rome, you may as well milk a one-off.
Frankly amazing....!

The first i ever heard of"New Voyages" was on this thread so off i went to check it out.I think it's incredible what these guys have done in only 3 episodes, the huge leaps in all aspects of production between the episodes is staggering.I am anxious to see the sulu episode now more than ever..The chekov episode is pretty great a few flaws sure...but still in a league of it's own for fan produced/funded.Thanks for re-igniting my own interest in Star Trek which for me at least has been on the wane for a good 6 years...

The website says the new episode is released on FRIDAY, AUGUST 23rd. On my calendars August 23rd, 2007 falls on a Thurdsay. Is this some kind of time-travel paradox?

...he said "sulu's poop chute" all in the same sentence. That got a chuckle out of me. :P
