I like this casting of Robert Downey jnr a lot, not so much because he's perfect for it but because he's such an unconventional choice. It might not work, but at least Favreau seems to want something a bit different.

Of the big three comic films due next year, this is the one I'm looking forward to the most. After that, Edward Norton as The Incredible Hulk. Lastly, what will likely be another mixture of solid character work and lacklustre action from Christopher Nolan.

Seems to be coming together really well...

I've gotta say, everything that I have seen regarding Iron Man seems to be just perfect. The only Iron Man I have ever read was back in 1983, when Tony Stark had run himself into the ground due to Alcohol addiction. It was a really grown up and sympathetic story. I hope that they eventually do this story, with Robert Downey Jr (who can surely bring a brutal honesty to it).

Can't go wrong with Edward Norton, I reckon. The cast for that one is shaping up well, too, with Liv Tyler, Tim Roth, William Hurt, and Tim Blake Nelson. Letterier does trashy, dumb action well, and that's what I'd like to see in a Hulk film, so fingers crossed for that one.

P.S. Speaking of CHUD, www.chud.com are reporting that Terence Howard was hinting he'll wear the War Machine suit in this Iron Man film. Could be bollocks, of course, but you never know.

yup, so far everything seems perfect for this movie...

It looks good, doesn't it, just pillow talk? I love the lumbering prototype suit, then seeing the sleeker suit at the end was the cherry on top. Both Iron Men suits are fantastic. And both look great in action. I have very high hopes for this one and I was thinking that maybe since this is a 'second tier' hero, the expectations, etc are lower. And everything that we see is just wowing the shit out of us, ya know? I mean, when this project was first announced with Jon Fav at the helm, who was expecting this?

And I believe I'm much slower than you since I didn't even know about this Dailymotion stuff.

by BobParr

Don't get me wrong, I like Robert Downey Jr. like everyone else. But Hollywood has typecast him with these roles. Every movie he is in he has a drinking or drug problem. I know he's a recovering addict but I'm sure he has the range to play other kinds of characters with other kinds of problems. I'm also sure that there are a lot of sober actors that could portray addicts convincingly.

IRON MAN To Pwn Summer 2008
by LaserPants
Jul 30th, 2007
12:09:14 PM
Although I'm sure THE DARK KNIGHT is gonna pwn too, methinks IRON MAN is going to really pwn the summer. Why?

1) Its "new" so people will gravitate towards it,

2) The whole change-of-heart theme -- from arrogant drunk military industrial complex guy to champion for peace (w/ kick ass battle armor tech, natch) reflects the current state of the country -- teh zeitgeist if you will -- in that the cast majority of the country, even staunch Republicans, are FINALLY realizing that dry-drunk oil billionares make terrible leaders, and that the Iraquagmire was a HUGE mistake which may very well sink the US forever. You know, the whole backlash/comeuppance on the theocratic neocons thang, and the inevitbale return to progressive sanity.

3) Droning metal guitar riff followed by "I AM IRON MAN!" And teh crowd goes wild!

4) MAN IN SUIT! and CG -- so you get the flying scenes right, and the close-quarters scenes right too. No wonky looking Clone Troopers with floating heads!

You know, I just hope that Stark is somehow redeemed in the comics. I always thought IRON MAN was cool as shit, but it sucks that he's such a fascist now. Someone needs to save his soul, yo!

So why go to motherfucking such a b grade effects house, their effects on Singerman were pretty horrendous at times, it's horrendous because of the fact it was nominated for an academy award. First off... for the luvva jeebus PLEASE use your apostrophes correctly. It's You're, not YOUR. Your implies ownership. You're implies (hell, says) "you are". Simple. I guess mavericks don't have much use for 'teh skoolin'? And, on another note. When I saw that Downey was up for this role I said, 'bang on'. This guy's been through a lot in his life, and seems to have turned a personal corner, as well as a professional one a few years ago as well. I mean, he's an Academy award-winning actor. He can fill 'the suit'. It's just nice to know he wants to, as well. I am a big fan of the mid to late 80's Iron Man, and would love to see Howard in the War Suit as well, though maybe save that for the inevitable sequel. Any news on who's scoring it? I'd rather not have the heavy-handedness of Transformers all over this. Maybe James Horner? He did the excellent ALIENS score. Or Zimmer? And for sure not the dude who did HP#5. Why Does Admiration Of Someone's Work = Fellatio?
by LaserPants
Jul 30th, 2007

I'm having a hard time with this. There seems to be a trend here that if you like a particular person's work, whether it be in terms of writing, directing, acting, or whatever, that it means you are giving (or want to give) said person an extended blow-job. Seems like a far leap. So, I guess the only way to be ungay is to hate everything all the time even if you like it? What a sad world some of you live in.

Seriously, though, it really is okay to like an actor, writer, director's work -- hell, you could even be a raving obsessive lunatic about them for their work -- it still doesn't mean you want to blow them. Of course, if you do, thats just fine and dandy too, but I reckon most people here are speaking mostly about their fave artists work, not their genitalia.

what examples of norton's writing are you aware of? I know he did an uncredited polish on Frida (it's about leftist artists, I'm sure you loved it), redid american history x (I dare someone to say that movie was poorly done)...I know he's working on motherless brooklyn, but it's not out yet.

so what do you base this "norton can't write for shit" idea on?

Am I the only one the sees through RDJ's attempt to pander to the "geeks"?
"Well that's why I'm such a geek, and um, nerd-gasm, and um, I love mythology and technology, and GACK!"
You guys buy that? How about the part where he basically implies that he was a good candidate for the film because he doesn't mind bad movies? I dunno, just his tone and everything seem to suggest that he thinks this material is beneath him. Check out his other interviews. They all seem that way.
I also agree with the poster that said this Stark is too flippant and sarcastic. It's just too jokey for me; it doesn't feel like he's taking itself seriously at all. That said, His more humble, "transformed" self will be the bulk of the movie and I think RDJ is an absolutely inspired choice for this character.

he DID look like Nic Cage in Lord of War (not a bad influence) and sound like a corporate Jack Sparrow (BAD influence) so I'm mixed. I really hope Favreau and RDJ didn't tried to be cute with the character, as in "we funnymen are so smarter than the material". I know it sounds weird, but good-looking Marvel movies fooled us so many times before with their gospel... I know many people that watched it live on the Con and were far from impressed (visuals aside). Now that I saw it I'm partially relieved, but there are definitely some bothersome issues about the tone of the flick. Considering that before IM Favreau was planning a "comedic" Captain America flick...

As for the Hulk bad news about Norton's rewrites, I truly hope they're exagerated. The first one was lacking, but it was better than X3 at least... Now with the crappy Unleashed and Transporter flicks onboard I fear the worse, too bad for Zak Penn he's a decent director but his comic scripts will go down in history as AkivaGoldsman-worthy. Hey, maybe someday he'll get an oscar, who knows?

Fooled before indeed. I also heard from more than a few people that the reaction walking away from the panel at the Con was mixed at best with regard to Iron Man. A mixture of hesitation (are they taking this seriously?) and euphoria (Iron Man in action looks amazing!). I felt the same way watching here on my comp. I literally got chills seeing Iron Man in motion, but subconsciously the character portions felt a little...plastic. I'm not going to go overboard and pass judgement based solely on this clip though.

As for The Hulk...Look at the amount and type of press it's getting compared to Iron Man and and TDK. The production is a complete mess and Marvel knows it. They're distancing themselves from from what could potentially be a fiasco and putting their eggs into the Iron Man basket. That's not to say Hulk won't be good, but typically where there's smoke there's fire...

yeah I see where you come from. IM footage is a true eye candy, but I'd have prefered to watch more calm, character-driven bits of everyone (especially Bridges) instead of one big RDJ-based demo reel, probably misleading nonetheless. I don't know why they tried to "sell" him to a preemptively sold fanbase. I was already sold to Downey as Tony, and now this big teaser just put me three steps backwards in my appreciation. Too much too soon.

As for Hulk, I truly dig the character so I'm gonna give even the crappier-looking movie a big chance. I hate the director and I'm amazed at how late they are in their schedule. Iron Man wrapped while they still didn't shot a single frame with Norton. It sounds bad and I'd hate a prima-donna actor (who obviously despises the genre movies) ruin the efforts of hard-working people who have everything to prove: both Penn and Leterrier have to redeem for their lame past movies, and since the first Hulk is hated by most it was a good (missed?) opportunity. I hate when it happens.

He's great for the action scenes obviously, but the whole time I was thinking that his character was supposed to have been played by like a 18 or 20 year old rather than a 40. Im looking forward to seeing what the Hulk film will look like out of curosity, specifically if its going to be kinetic over the top like Transporter, or more thoughtful and restrained like Unleashed. Hopefully the latter, though I really hope the script is like neither.

hey cockbreath, you think ghostface killah should be on a contract without mentioning Black Sabbath, or are you saying this with the knowledge Black Sabbath is pretty much in this already? Ghostface Killah likes Iron man but apart from his alter ego and one lyrics, I don't see much connection, compared to say Iron Man by motherfucking Sabbath.

It has an exceptional cast, though Liv Tyler is downgrading but everyone else has gone up prestige wise. But then the director and writers. Yeah the director is not pedestrian which is way worse than anything, but he's not stellar either, maybe this will be his chance. And Norton's ego driving writing is a problem but then maybe it's that one little quirk he has where he truly loves Marvel comics and goes "i want to make this" and nails it. Biggest problem for me is Rhythm and Hues as the effects house, the only CG they can do is superimposition, they are terrible at organic CGI, Weta or ILM would have been the best bet. Rhythm and Hues aren't even up to Fellowship standards yet and they have a bit to go. It's going to be two big blobs of CGI fighting each other, rather than The Hulk fighting The Abomination.

See, this is a difficult one. I have to start this with stating that I like the version we have.

As I remember, Norton was given the right to re-cut a lot of it, and managed to boost the Approval rating a little bit. However, Tony Kaye (I hope that's right) fucking HATED his cut and (as the man has a gigantic ego- he published advertisements stating that he was the most important British Director since Hitchcock, before having filmed anything at all-for fuck's sake) wanted to re-do it himself. His version, at least in his own mind, would have been different, darker and arguably superior to the one that was released. However, he fucked about so much that the studio (who had given him a truly staggering amount of leeway) lost patience and just released the Norton version.

Kaye then retaliated with the stupid variety ads.

There was a lengthy interview with him recently in the Sunday telegraph, and Kaye admitted to actually going crazy during the editing process for that film.

So which version is/ would have been better? My money is on Kaye's- but we will never know, and Norton's is still a fucking good film. Really, the whole story is a complete mess.

Good lord!

Down In The Valley. That's an incredibly underrated picture. It's really weird how that and The King starring Gael Garcia Bernal and dealing with some of the similar themes were totally forgotten by critics and audiences, both are fantatic films easily in the best of their respective years. But anyway Downey is a cool choice for Stark tho I can see why some won't like him. I'm so pleased they've gone heavily witht he practical effects, thank the lord. CG should be used to augment physical fx not in place of them.

...such as MOriarty. Most writeups have clearly stated the the Iron Man footage and panel was the highlight of Comic Con. The reaction wasn't "mixed", from any of the dozen+ sources I've read. This film will be as good as any Superhero movie ever made (that's not saying all that much, though). The actors represent the best cast in any of these films so far, the FX will be top-notch (due to advancing technology and the ample budget, and ILM's involvement as the principal FX house), and the main character will offer a good bit of opportunity for development, excitement, and humor. This film is well on its way to huge buzz and earning a tidy profit even before DVD release is factored in. I was right in saying LoTR would earn $500 million+ profit for New Line (not including Peter Jackson's $200 million+ take), and in saying that the Passion would put $200 million+ in Gibson's pocket. I'm saying that Iron Man will earn at least $100 million in profit for Marvel, and that at least 2 sequels will be made.

your "friends in high places" aside...I'm at a loss as to how you can get so angry whenever someone calls on your overblown, over-simplified take on everything.

keeping the faith was a fun little movie, but norton didn't write that, he directed it. and you didn't mention at all the 2 works I mentioned (frida and american history x) where I think it's apparent that his input, at the very least, didn't hurt the films. and probably made them better.

edward norton is a great actor. this is a man that got an academy award nomination in his first film role.

in contrast, you are an angry talkbacker that believes the conservative party was responsible for the civil rights movement.

instead of lashing out with insults at me, maybe give me some concrete examples of norton being "notorious in hollywood" for fucking up projects...with all of your high level inside info and friends that you love to talk about, I'm sure you could give us a little insight.

and although being a PA on a reality show is a little below me, I'm really not insulted when you pull the "you're a nothing on hollywood!!!" card. it's petty, and what's worse, ineffective...I'm very happy with how things are going for me. I get to have dinner with one of my favorite directors later this month, since I have a short film showing at an awards dinner where he's receiving an honorarium. and that's fine by me. I don't hear gossip from A-lister assistants about who hates whom, and why, as you seem to get. but then again, that's not really as important to me...

do me a favor, though. in your reply, put all of the petty and mostly non-sensical insults towards me at the beginning of the post, then do a paragraph break, and then post the actual response. it's hard to weed through your posts when they're all mixed together. thanks!

I'll quote myself here:

"I also heard from more than a few people that the reaction walking away from the panel at the Con was mixed at best with regard to Iron Man."

That means that I, personally, heard from 4-5 people (actual people that I know) that felt there was a mixed reaction at the show. Their opinions do not go away because of the "dozens" of "sources" you've "read". It's just an opinion of their's. I share their opinion that the Tony Starks moments appeared to be playing awfully fast and loose, but as I said I'm basing that on a small clip. That's *my* opinion Matt, not yours.

"I literally got chills seeing Iron Man in motion."

See, Matt, getting "chills" in this context is a positive thing.

"The clip gave me chills. That is Iron Man."

Again, Matt, chills = positive. "That is Iron Man" = positive.

The movie is going to be huge. I will be first in line, and will likely see is 3 or 4 times. I'm dying to see it. I apologize if I didn't conform exactly to your opinions, or the "dozens of sources" you've read.

And I apologize if literally getting chills from watching the footage wasn't positive enough for you. Really.

Good Vibes Aside
by Barron34
Aug 3rd, 2007
03:34:21 PM
Good vibes do not neccessarily make a good moive. I like all the players involved, and am an old Marvel fan, but I will remain skeptical about any hype on this movie until the actual film is complete and gets shown. I am hopeful, but suggest some caution. Remember how jazzed many people were that Bryan Singer was brought in to film the new SUPERMAN movie. People being jazzed and hyped up can still make mistakes. Singer bought into his own hype (over X-Men and X-2), and he scotched the SUPERMAN film. Favreau seems to have a level head, though. Still, I worry. Filmmakers are not infallible. Regardless, I hope the film is a success, for the filmmakers and the fans.
