For some reason I can now hear Depp "talk-singing" the ST song "Pretty Women." Yeah, it's probably better when someone has a trained baritone (like recent Broadway Sweeney Michael Cerveris), but Depp is such a good actor I think he'll be able to wing it. Actually, come to think of it, all the cast are such great actors they'll probably be able to fake it as well (Spall already proved he can do it in "Topsy-Turvy"). I just don't want to hear all the tiresome Sondheim perfectionists whinging about this movie and its lack of viable singers. Suck it up - if Sondheim gave his blessing, who are you to complain?

The Gentleman Ghost role was cut. He was quoted as saying at least it was better than actually going through the filming only to have it cut later. I still wish they could find a way to work him in there somehwere, with Rickman and Spall, this is looking like a great show.

I keep singing that one line whenever someone mentions Sweeney Todd. I wonder why. That is a great poster. Very artsy. I'm excited and nervous about this movie. I love musicals so when they cast Johnny, an unproven singer, I felt a little woozy. But he may be a good enough actor to fudge it. I hope so anyway. It is a shame Christopher Lee got the shaft again. Now that's a voice.

I love this show. In my view the music is highly operatic in the traditional sense(Benjamin Britten) with some exceptions like 'Pirelli's Miracle Elixir' and 'Best Pies in London.' I think the music may irritate mainstream audiences, but this is a classic concept and Cohen as Pirelli is fantastic casting!

Why does anything need to be pigeonholed so. Sweeny Todd is 100 times more Grusome then Little Shop of Horrors(what do you think is in those pies). Without the music it would be a Silence of the Lambs type thriller. There are plenty of musicals that arent just men dancing around in gold sequened pants. Three Penny Opera, Les Miserables, Oliver. This is high drama with music as the vehicle. If you avoid because you think "its gay" you will miss out on some of the greatest creative and artistic experiences available!

"gay" as an insult
by Daddylonghead
Jul 27th, 2007
07:25:08 AM
I know it's unfortunate and regressive, but it can also be funny. For instance, saying theater is gay, that's just homophobic. Although whatever, theater is kind of gay, but that's besides the point. My point is that calling things "gay" in a second-grade way can be highly humorous.

For instance I recently heard a young man exclaim, as his taco shell cracked and spilled its contents over his T-shirt, "man, this taco's gay." And while watching a teenager get a taco on his shirt is inherently funny, it wouldn't have been nearly as funny if he hadn't accused his taco of being gay.

Short back and sides, please.

More gay than Little Shop?
by TheBoojum
Jul 27th, 2007
07:46:23 AM
What the fuck does that mean? Some musicals have explicitly gay themes, or feature crossdressers in prominent roles... Neither Sweeney Todd nor Little Shop have either of these. I'm a musical theater writer in a four person collaborative team; one of us is proudly and openly gay; three of us are happily married (to women) with kids. It means nothing-- art forms aren't gay. And for those of you who think that Sondheim is for losers, I direct you to this interview with Joss Whedon that I did for the Sondheim Review: http://tinyurl.com/9zo9m
Bronx Cheer, and 'Gay' as insult - South Park origins?
by half vader
Jul 27th, 2007
07:49:03 AM
Forgive my ignorance Bronx, but is "Bronx Cheer" a euphemism (not from around there)?

As far as the gay insult, I thought it was an ironic thing that stemmed from South Park. The whole point with so much South Park is actually pretty moral and as far as I understood it was the same as when they called each other 'dildo' and so on - they didn't know what it meant but used it as a swear word, and there were no parents around to actually take responsibility (usually being off trying to get things censored so they DIDN'T have to take responsibility!), same thing with 'gay'. It seems like the ironic thing is that the dopey general audience didn't see the extra layer of the joke, took it at face value and started using it as an insult in exactly the same surface derogatory manner. Which meant the South Park guys had an extra laugh. The trouble seems to be that now so much time has gone by it's passed into general usage (much like Rocky and "Yo!"). So the joke is ultimately back on Matt and Trey because they failed to enlighten anybody. I mean, how many people used it that way (especially "totally gay") before South Park?

That was the whole theme of the film too. Of course I went to see it and sat down to find parents had taken their ten-year old son. Nobody stopped them either, even though it was rated R. The cinema workers probably worked at the video store the rest of the time - someone's gotta be responsible for putting the DVDs in the kids' cartoon section!

Anyway they stayed through the whole thing which was good because at least there was no way they could get out of talking to their kid about the whole subject. Matt and Trey would have been proud. Really, some people just shouldn't breed.

Looks like George Miller's hair to me.

The "Silence of the Lambs" comment was merely a point to counter the belief that all musicals would fit into any one category. I was trying to illustrate that Todd is not like Showboat and WOULD be more akin to a cinematic thriller, then to what the previous poster was stereotyping all musicals as. BTW- Didn't mean to to ruin it. The story has been around for nearly 50 years so I assumed people who cared would already know about it, and that most people on these boards would be in the know already. It would be like mentioning relevant plot points in a Dickens novel. It is a classic and spoilers are long past relevance, but I will cede the point. I would think that those on a Sweeny Todd TB would know the basic plot points though. Its not like the pie thing is some huge mystery, its just part of the overall plot. The real puzzles in Todd are much deeper.

When it comes to musicals, I'm a big fan of musicals about subjects that play against the "musicals are happy and 'gay'" stereotype. Little Shop of Horrors is one of those. I don't know who's idea it was to transform a really shitty Roger Corman movie into a musical, but it worked like a charm. Another great example is Sweeney Todd. Because until Sweeney Todd came around there was no such thing as a "musical thriller." Sondheim invented a whole new genre of musical. Because any musical that features a song about how different professions would taste as pies is okay by me.
