I actually think Depp was great in C&TCF. But the movie WAS crap.

I didn't hate charlie and the chocolate factory, but I thought the bit with wonka's childhood was not necessary, and as a huge fan of the book, I was kinda bothered that they stuck it in there...

I'm still trying to get that LOTR poster where he's looking down at the ring. One of the best, simplest and most iconic images for years. Speaking of comic-con, I also want that "whiteface" Willy Wonka from Neca. That was cool.

Cromwell, why then do you pidgeongole it yourself with the "Silence" comment? And too bad you spoiled things with the pie comment for those who don't know about it and were excited by this version. Having said that, are those pies Soylent Green in colour?

For instance I recently heard a young man exclaim, as his taco shell cracked and spilled its contents over his T-shirt, "man, this taco's gay." And while watching a teenager get a taco on his shirt is inherently funny, it wouldn't have been nearly as funny if he hadn't accused his taco of being gay.

As far as the gay insult, I thought it was an ironic thing that stemmed from South Park. The whole point with so much South Park is actually pretty moral and as far as I understood it was the same as when they called each other 'dildo' and so on - they didn't know what it meant but used it as a swear word, and there were no parents around to actually take responsibility (usually being off trying to get things censored so they DIDN'T have to take responsibility!), same thing with 'gay'. It seems like the ironic thing is that the dopey general audience didn't see the extra layer of the joke, took it at face value and started using it as an insult in exactly the same surface derogatory manner. Which meant the South Park guys had an extra laugh. The trouble seems to be that now so much time has gone by it's passed into general usage (much like Rocky and "Yo!"). So the joke is ultimately back on Matt and Trey because they failed to enlighten anybody. I mean, how many people used it that way (especially "totally gay") before South Park?

That was the whole theme of the film too. Of course I went to see it and sat down to find parents had taken their ten-year old son. Nobody stopped them either, even though it was rated R. The cinema workers probably worked at the video store the rest of the time - someone's gotta be responsible for putting the DVDs in the kids' cartoon section!

Anyway they stayed through the whole thing which was good because at least there was no way they could get out of talking to their kid about the whole subject. Matt and Trey would have been proud. Really, some people just shouldn't breed.
