His only real problem is over exuberance, hence the terrible accident he had while trying to get the statue of liberty to blow him.

The ambiguity of what the heck this project was opened the cork on the film fantasies that so many people have been carrying around--a movie that approached something familiar like Cthulu or Voltron in an entirely left-field way, full of grandeur and not pigeonholed from the start as just another niche film with merchandise-marketing at its core.

It's the same kind of excitement that fluttered up when the Blair Witch Project was emerging--some loved it, others hated it, but it made us think about a filmgoing experience that really messed with our expectations and took us somewhere else.

So whether Cloverfield is that or not, if Hollywood can find a way to tap into that untapped approach, the results will, after so many disappointed hopes, be magical.

An iconic American monster would have to be a reaction to terrorist attacks, which this film clearly mimicks.

But it's patently ridiculous to seriously think this is Voltron. Look at it from this perspective: if JJ was making a Voltron film to be released 1-18-08 wouldn't the studio be playing up the lions? They would be making the movie to play upon the nostalgia for those darn lions, much like was done (poorly) for BAYFORMERS. Not enough people are familiar with Voltron for any studio NOT to be marketing the lions as early as possible. Even if the film had a "measley" 30MM budget.

Secondly, if a Voltron movie was going to be released in 6 months, there would already be toy contracts and stuff. Remember how early we started seeing Transformers toy stuff? Supposedly Indy IV stuff will be showing up at Comic Con thid weekend and that doesn't come out until May.

Bottom line- IT ISN'T FRIGGIN VOLTRON.
