The fact that Han shot first does not, nor could it ever make him a murderer. Greedo is spouting off about how Han used to be good, but now his days are over, blah blah. He clearly reveals his intention to murder Han. Han shot first, and killed Greedo in self defense, a preemptive strike. That's not murder. Even as a kid I didn't think it was murder. Its amazing that anyone would have ever thought this was a problem! (that being said, I find it very unlikely that Lucas has changed his mind and now thinks Han shot first).

But it's for the wrong reasons. That scene with Jabba, in the "Special Edition", is a complete waste of time. All Han and Jabba do it re-hash the discussion Han had with Greedo (sometimes word for word). If Lucas was going to add that scene, it would have been better to delete the Greedo scene rather than give us the bastardized version we got stuck with.

the soundtrack to E.T on in the car today and I was just grinning like a big happy geek at points. Then I switched to some of his Indy stuff (it was a long journey) and was even more geeked out... The fact that there is a movie, in production right now, that has Steven Spielberg, George Lucas, Harrison Ford, John Williams, Frank Marshall and K Kennedy working on it, well it just makes me very fucking happy. Most of you don’t get it – it’s not an admission, he’s mocking you. One thing that is plain to see is that the more criticism Lucas receives, the more dug in he gets with his position (hence the god-awful new trilogy). So, while some of you may see this as an admission, I view it more like he’s giving all of you the finger and laughing at you (after working for the Lucas empire for five years and watching how things worked this move wouldn’t surprise me in the least). What’s even more pathetic, is that when he releases the 30th anniversary edition of Star Wars with thirty-seven seconds of new footage, you’ll go buy it again, and when he releases the 31st anniversary edition where he removed the Greedo shot, you’ll buy that one too.

Come on, at some point doesn’t Star Wars lose it’s relevance? Or at least decrease a bit in terms of significance? The original trilogy is great (with the possible exception of Endor). But seriously, aside from what I thought was a fairly good series of sequel books (the Zahn trilogy) and possibly Clone Wars, what else is worth keeping Star Wars newsworthy? Seriously – somebody educate me, I’m willing to listen. This has to be the most bulletproof license of all time. The new films were horrible – if you look back on all three of them, it’s kind of staggering to realize that The Phantom Menace might just be the best of the lot, and that’s only because of the Darth Maul fight.

If Lucas has Han shooting first in the Ultimate Edition of A New Hope that will be a nice nod to fans. After all, it's the fans that buy the DVDs, why not give them something back? And while he's at it, why doesn't he give the fans the deleted scenes? I hope we see these on the Ultimate set. I also want the sabres FIXED PROPERLY ONCE AND FOR FUCKING ALL and all the inconsistencies dealt with (e.g. in Cloud City, the wall that is a CG background window in one shot and then just the original solid wall in another. Replace more of the ropier effects work with new CG. Reshoot Hayden Christensen's 'cameo' at the end of ROTJ so he doesn't look like he's checking out his costume (the footage was taken from a costume test, after all...)

I think what someone else said earlier was right on, though. When he decided to reinsert that Jabba-Han scene he should've just deleted the Han-Greedo scene altogether. In someways, it is pretty funny that Lucas is wearing a shirt that contradicts his 'vision' post 1997 of the Original Movies, but in other ways, it is pretty sad too. The man has fucked with the greatest trilogy of movies (IMO), and keeps tinkering in every release thereafter, and in the process put out a shitty remastered, or rebasterized version on DVD last year. As Bill Murray said in Ghostbusters about Ray, I believe he is talking about George Lucas now, "Egon, George Lucas has gone bye-bye now, so what do you got?" I think the man knows that the majority of fans think the PT is average, or inferior to the OT, and he believed that the fans would rally to accept the movies the same way we did with SW, ESB, and ROTJ, and in the end, they look nothing alike ,but two different trilogies trying to become one. Sorry George, I used to be your biggest defender before 1997, as you could do no wrong, but as long as you keep the Original Movies from being remastered, but in the same vein where a 'Han Shoots first' shirt, I put my hands up and think how you have fallen from grace.

As an actor and huge SW fan I have to say the issue for me is that Han's character arc was changed when Greedo squeezed off a blast before Han did. From a story telling point of view it was important to show what a ruthless smuggler Han was in the film. When the Princess claims "Your friend is quite a mercenary, I wonder if he really cares about anything or anyone" that set the stage for his turn from the dark side if you will and come back to help look at the end of the film to save his life and help destroy the death star. So Lucas trying to make the film in the special edition more kid friendly screwed up han's character arc. Lucas also changed the relationship with Lando and Han in Return of the Jedi by changing a line on the skiff when Han is hanging upside down. When ROTJ special edition had added scenes they had to re-do some of the music score. When Han shoots the sarlacc pit tentacle in the original film Land says "Wait, wait, I thought you were blind?" Han's reply was "Trust Me" Then fires the blaster freeing Lando......again this reveals the trust issues they have for one another. In the Special edition the line is changed to another take that is longer for the new music cues to "Don't worry, I can see now" then Han fires blaster. Both incidences changed the character that was written originally in the scripts. I hope this was not too nerdy. thanks for listening!!!

Greedo pulled his gun out under the table getting ready to shoot Han while they were talking. Han either hear the gun being drawn or figured what Greedo would do and shot first. Greedo fired as he was hit but the impact of the blast shifted the angle of the shot so that the blast went past Han instead of into him. That's why it was important that he did shoot first otherwise he'd have been dead. If you look closely you can see the second blast pass by Solo. You can also see the arm turn to the side to the side when he gets hit then falls slack after.

Even Mark Hammill was not happy with that change, as I remember reading in a interview with him once. In the 2004 ESB DVD's, the scream was gone! Han Solo takes a heroes journey in Star Wars from a selfish pirate to joining the rebellion. It makes sense that Solo would shoot first. he's ruthless, smart, and protects himself. By having Greedo shoot first, Lucas 'softened' Solo's character. It's indicative of the fact that Lucas became more interested in CG technology than good storytelling. THAT'S WHY PEOPLE GIVE A FUCK ABOUT THIS.

Willie, the prequels are great storytelling too - certainly no worse than the OT. And why shouldn't Lucas also be interested in CG since it frees you to accomplish whatever your imagination can muster (i.e. the greatest set pieces ever put on film)? And you don't get to say who Han Solo is, only Lucas has that privilege, it's his character after all, and he can change it all he likes. You people treat these movies as though they are some sacred text that can not be tampered with, which in effect takes all the fun out of them. No wonder you don't like them. I give a fuck because you ignorant fanboys don't give Lucas the credit he deserves as a film pioneer and an artist. An ARTIST? Yeah, what he has done with the series is literary, and no one seems to appreciate it on that level. Who cares about petty details in a fantasy epic anyway? Even Joseph Campbell explains how SW is art in the Power of Myth. You know, Joseph Campbell, one of the 20th century's greatest intellectuals? No? Anyway, he was a pretty damn smart dude, and he recognized Lucas as an artist, rightly so. God, I love being bored at work.

I think not. He would have viewed the Prequels as the thing that effectively destroyed whatever mythology Star Wars had, which was pretty thin to begin with. Star Wars was once the great modern myth. Now it's just 3 okay movies to have on while you're browsing the Net.

oh, this is tiring, but i have to stick up for lucas as an artist. perhaps a thesis would better suffice, but for now, i'll just say i take pride in being one of the few people that see the prequels and OT for the beautiful films they are. the prequels - put them up against the matrix, or pirates, or any of the other SW wannabes out there and they stand high and above the rest. and they enhance the OT, not detract from it. the set pieces alone are among the best i've ever seen. who really cares about the dialogue anyway? it's not what these movies are about. campbell acknowledged that, as an artist, lucas took care to render the message he wanted to convey to his audience. i doubt he would have held the prequels in any less regard as they were simply an extension of the mythology, but who knows, he's dead. i can't speak for him, only infer based on what he's said about lucas's work in the past. you fanboys tend to hang on your expectations and fail to see how much heart has gone into each and every one of the SW films. SW is as much about the process, as the final product. they don't have to be high brow, or even well-written, to be high art. and it's not Lucas's fault he made so much money. i'm wasting my breath here, but i love provoking you fanboys and standing up for lucas as an artist, which no one seems capbable of seeing him as such, except Campbell and couple other intelligent people i know. peace.

You're trying to reason with a community that prefers the Pirates of the Caribbean sequels--a pair of horrid confections rightfully despised by critics--to Revenge of the Sith, a superlative genre film that was ranked alongside ANH and TESB at the time of its release (though you wouldn't know it here, what with their "Holy Trilogy" bullshit). My advice: Leave and enjoy the criminally savaged prequels. Time will vindicate you.

The consensus on ROTS hasn't changed (many fans and critics rank it either #2 or #3 in the saga, depending on their adoration for ANH) and the animus for TPM has quelled considerably. I think it's likely there will be a reappraisal of the PT in 5-7 years.

Only worsened in your mind. He's already adding the fully digital Yoda back into TPM, which is just a great film by the way. As are AOTC and ROTS. I think Liam Neeson said it best when he said "these films will be watched and loved a hundred years from now." And he's right. They are timeless, and I enjoy them more with each viewing, including the OT (especially now since the PT has given it all new depth and resonance). That's it for me. I can't add anymore to this debate. Prequels and Special Editions and the originals all rock. George, and the talent he surrounded himself with, have given us all something to enjoy both as adults and children for the rest of our lives. Not that you should watch them all the time. Once a year or so. Be sure to read a good book now and then. And there's more than SW to love. Herzog, Bergman, and a multitude of others. Film plain rocks, and SW is among the best of it.
