It looked like it wasn't going to be anything awesome or cool, or whatever... but that last page was fuckin awesome. Where the hell did he come from? How did he get there? And man, Greg Land draws an awesome (version of that character) Also, the Phonogram covers were each a tribute to a different BritPop album. They did a Suede cover, Blur's Modern Life Is Rubbish, that Black Grape album with the guy with the sunglasses, and a few others... Also, Silverfish was the best (new) thing I've read this year so far. Final also (for now)... If DC is doing a Final Crisis, it'd damn well better be a FINAL Crisis. No more of this bullshit. Blow open the goddamn multiverse, the Hypertime, the whatever...it's all fiction anyway. Just tell good stories. Make us care enough to buy it again when the next issue comes out. That's all.

Doctor Lame...

Thank you for pointing out just how lame Dr. Strange is in the current New Avengers. Had I been drinking something while I read the book would have done a spit-take at the ridiculous "my cloak doesn't work under these conditions" line. Say WHAT??? And Spidey makes a joke about the Secret Defenders -- but with him, Wolvie & Strange, that's really what this book basically is. Would be nice if there was an actual core Avenger here leading the team (and I don't count Clint Barton/Echo -- why hasn't he suited up as Hawkeye again? Did I miss something? LOVE the Hawkster but I want the Clint of old back, not this pale imitation). I was just about to give up on this book after the ludicrous Civil War series (I felt suckered that I stuck thru the whole crappy mess) but the Skrull thing is kind of interesting, and I'm intrigued to see how this plays out. I do in fact hope that Tony Stark is a Skrull, because Marvel has taken a character I used to like and made him into the biggest asshole in the Marvel Universe. I actually enjoyed the beatdown he received from the Hulk. I'll keep following this book...for now.

And I was disappointed because Guggenheim was writing the hell out of Bart and it was all editorially-directed in the end, but actually, I'm much more concerned about the state of the Rogues and their mischacterization to get to that point. And I'm especially grieved for Weather Wizard because it looks like he's being set up to be offed, with his need for his Weather Wand removed (which, btw, alienates him from his grounding and his humanity because the wand was his connection to his brother Clyde, who he killed and stole the wand from). Way to paper over character development in the name of "advancement."

But yeah, I agree Rock-Me, issues 44 and 43 are where Countdown finally stopped treading water because the real inciting incident finally happened in the regular books. It's a shame that DC felt they had to start it up immediately after 52 ended, because they may have killed solid sales on the book by effectively putting out 2 months of "dead air."

While I'm at it, I love Bru, but can we just have our Steve Rogers back or find the new cap and move on. Sharon Carter looks great in her skimpy outfits, but having her see Faust in a mirror for another half of a year is going to drive me nuts. Winter Soldier/Falcon/Nick Fury/Sharon Carter are all great.... SUPPORTING CHARACTERS! I'd plunk down my money for a Bru Wintor Soldier Title as well. But gimme my Steve Rogers Cap back or fill the suit.

I'm enjoying the shit out of New Avengers even though it should have a completely different title... you know, one without the word Avengers in it. But yes, the Dr. Strange excuse was total crap.

I got the 1st Thor but will trade-wait for the rest. I just don't trust JMS anymore.

I'm growing bored with X-Factor and may very well drop it.

And the set up for X-men/Hulk is another lazy job by editors to cram an extra series into an event.

Bendispeak eventually gets like watching an episode of Gilmore Girls. The dialogue sound like it's all some overengineered witty banter rather than a real discussion between characters. I'm soooo glad I don't collect Spider-Man as Bendis has turned P.P into a total friggin idiot in New Avengers. Since when is light hearted, stupid? I have mixed feelings about the plane crash. From one standpoint, I find it lame that the Avengers can't figure their way out of a planecrash. On the second hand, the airplane crashing and or shattering without consequence has gotten very old. It's been done in X-Men to death.

My quibble with X-Factor
by Homer Sexual
Jul 18th, 2007
02:22:15 PM
I have greatly enjoyed X-Factor, but this issue bothered me for two reasons: Rahne hooking up with Rictor. I know Rictor was never fully declared homo, but there was a lot of ambiguity. As a homo, I was glad that Northstar wasn't Marvel's one and only gay guy. A bigger quibble is Monet getting pregnant. Besides being an obvious development to the kind-of-threeway with her, Siryn and Madrox, it's very annoying since Monet is not the kind of person who would accidentally get pregnant. And please don't say "everyone has lapses." She had a lapse by boning Jamie, but she wouldn't have risked an unwanted pregnancy by having totally unprotected sex. No way. So that bugs.

p.s. I did a last minute mini review of Thor for Loodabagel, so I won't go on except to say I re-read it again last night and Thor totally looks like some gym rat, no majesty at all. I was watching Big Brother on TV,and this Thor would fit right in as a musclebound himbo. Also, why does he wear armor, exactly? Old look waaaayyy better than new look.

I am loving New Avengers. It's one of my top 5 of the month these days. But the critique of Yu's art is valid.

by Homer Sexual

Yeah, I do love the New Avengers, and am actually glad they have the word "Avengers" in the name, so that there can be some Avengers, other than the Ultimates, I would prefer to see killed horribly. And I wish Wolverine weren't in this group. And, God knows, the criticism of Dr. Strange's portrayal are valid.

Friday the 13th has been A+ since the first issue. I loved the first storyline. What a great movie it would have been, but then again...the movie would never have been this good! And this issue was even better. Anyone who has ever liked F13 should definitely pick this up!!!

...pulse-pounding excitement for intercut scenes of Bucky and Sharon moping. The book feels rudderless without Steve Rogers. Then again, maybe it picks up in the latest issue, but I was a huge fan of Brubaker and Epting's Cap and what they did with the character so it's disappointing that all the attention's only come with Cap being killed.

I would add a couple of characters to Ambush Bug's list of fully realised comic characters. The Punisher can seem one-dimensional but Garth Ennis has been working wonders for him. THE TYGER, set when Frank Castle was ten years old was one of my favourite stories of the year. Who else? Victor Von Doom.

I'm still confounded by how Marvel/Bendis can call a book starring Dr Strange, Wolverine, Spider-Man, Hawkeye, Luke Cage, Iron Fist and Spider-Woman "The Avengers" instead of the Defenders.

"Powers" rules. HBO should take the reins -- would make a nice replacement for "The Sopranos."

Every alphabet channel must needs their own Superhero show, right? And the way Deena Pilgrim ALONE curses, yikes! At times I gotta put down the issue.

Also . . . probably don't need to say, Cap'll be back . . . just in time for the inevitable film. We lookin', what, at least 3 years down the road. World w/out Cap. Ah, just read "Punisher," guy was Marvel's real fightin' 'merican anyways.

Marvel, do you remember the hoopla a couple years ago when the rumor was that the Ultimate Captain America was going to be black... and then you bailed and did "Truth" instead... That whole Tuskegee Super Soldiers thing that was kind of alright, but just kind of... Well, why not honor Steve Rogers (and give us an in-continuity/non-retconned black Captain America) by making Sam Wilson the new Captain America? Why hasn't ANYONE suggested making Falcon Captain America? Have it retconned into Steve's friggin will!!! It'd be fucking awesome, and you all know it! Also, "Sam Wilson" is every bit as cookie cutter American of a name as "Steve Rogers."

I'm all for a black Cap. It would be great for me to see the race issues in the 2000's through the eyes of an African American male in the iconic suit. The Falcon has moved in some new directions lately, and it would be interesting to see how his new character developments would play out if he assumed the mantle of Captain America.

I'm not convinced that Marvel wouldn't have a black Captain America. I think Sam Wilson as Cap and the Winter Soldier as a second main character would make for some great reading. The whle replacement Cap has been done to death in Captain America (Walker et al.) If someone else is going to fill the shoes rather than some lame resurrection story, Marvel will need it to be a dramitic departutre from previous Cap fill ins (dramatic meaning less expected, not undesirable).

by DuncanHines
Jul 19th, 2007
10:27:58 AM
And that's why brought it up in the first place. Joe Q said he wanted to make it (the Marvel U proper) the kind of place where anything can and will happen. This Skrull Infiltrtion/Invasion thing shows it. It is the 21st Century. Make Sam Wilson the new Captain America. Brubaker's Death of Captain America story is supposedly 9 issues long or something (I might be wrong... correct me if I am). Hell, at the rate the title relaunches, you could start over at issue 1. Retitle the book "The New Captain America." Marvel has put "New" in front of any title they want to reinvigorate (X-Men with Grant Morrison, Avengers with Bendis, Spider-Man, Luke Cage, and Wolverine...The obvious stars of those books) It's a lot easier for civilians (and you know who I'm talking about) to ask for "New Captain America" issue ONE. Media extravaganza! And keep Brubaker and Epting (and competent fill-in artists) on CAP for as fucking long as they're willing to stay. They made it what it is. They made me believe Steve Rogers could die. So ...
Sam Wilson (Falcon) for Captain America in 2008
by DuncanHines
Jul 19th, 2007
10:32:09 AM
He's the best, most logical idea. Bucky is obviously a red herring replacement candidate. Too soon from his revelation of being alive the whole time. I think Bucky would back Sam Wilson being Cap. And I think Marvel should have an official, one vote per person election in 08. Great parallel to the (you-know-this-election-is-gon na-be-bonkers) real life presidential election.
And, Skarekrow, on the contrary...
by DuncanHines
Jul 19th, 2007
10:38:01 AM
I think it would sell fucking INSANE numbers. Sam Wilson as "The New Captain America" issue 1 would sell more than the "Death" of Superman did. It'd be on the fucking cover of newspapers, Rolling Stone and TIME. It'd be controversial as hell. It'd get Marvel more of the AWESOME mainstream media coverage COMICS need. Keep the exact same classic Cap uniform, just have Sam Wilson's face behind the mask. Brubaker and Epting could keep it beyond classy.

Props to the man for helping create one of the best characters spawned outta the early 90s (or was it late 80s?) along with Cable. But the man just ignores all sorts of character development and changes that went along with the actual series that ran AFTER he stopped writing about Deadpool. Until recently, most everything revealed in the Deadpool series was ignored as Fabian Neizchie did whatever he felt like, while throwing in Left-wing loving Right-wing bashing comments. The man's political beliefs should stay outta the comic and take into account that Deadpool has been fleshed out besides the simple minded one liners and psychotic nature and inane banter. Any sort of depth is pretty much left out. For the love of God hand the reins over to Joe Kelly, or what'shisfirstname Priest, or Simone or SOMEONE. Fuck the political commentary and making the character about as interesting as wolverine's new mini-series where the character is as bland as a cardboard box.

Just put the spoiler in last weeks...that fucker dies the moment the new talkback appears.

I can't weigh in on the Cap. issue because I stopped reading it after they took the shield away the first time and gave it to the government tool.

Cap = ethnic identity unidentifiable.

They oughtta make a new Cap simply come out of nowhere, but, do all the good ol' American stuffs we expect the good ol' American stuffs we expect.

Here, here Marvel, consider THIS outline -- 1st "Return of Captain America" issue, would have to start in a milieu where everyone's out-and-out sick of the superhero registration started by Iron "Hi, my name is Tony, and I'm a . . ." Man; yep, superhero registration gone (because it WILL be gone, best believe) and things back to, oh, how's about getting back that "The Avengers" mood from the 1970s, early 80s? Yeah? You like? And, most of all, back to Cap doin' good works, but, mostly kicking major da kind. An all-silent (no word balloons or boxed narrative 'til the end; you'll see why) a la that "all silent Snake Eyes Marvel 'G.I. Joe' issue." Nothing controversial -- just have Cap' beating up the right people (not just people on the Right, yuk yuks). At the end, have a gov'ment representative (maybe the prez himself) say real official-like these few words: "Captain America IS back." And go from there.

Let's have the new Cap's ethnicity hard to tell. You ever seen the Jackson's (yes, THAT "The Jacksons," AKA The Jackson 5) sons' own musical group? They were called 3T. Those kids REALLY looked of mixed origin. Or even use someone like R&B musical talent Maxwell, who has a mixed look. How 'bout Golgo 13? In all the stories, hardly anyone can assess his national/ethnic origin. Every so often someone will see recognize his East Asian looks, but, for the most part Duke Togo's supposed to be cosmopolitan (and I ain't talkin' 'bout the magazine). Yep, there you go. Pay me, Marvel :) .

Skrulls and Peter Parker

So...does anyone think that Peter Parker will use this apparent Skrull invasion to gain back his secret identity? Pete could claim that it was a Skrull that unmasked from Spider-Man as Peter Parker...then he could tell everyone that he, Peter, is not Spider-Man (or a Skrull) and that he true identity of Spidey therefore still unknown. Just a though.

He's going to be in Oklahoma for the time being... JMS has said so in several interviews. JMS likes the setting and, being from the Sooner State, I like it too. JMS also said that he has asked Marvel to leave Thor alone for about six months to let him reintroduce the character before he starts venturing off to do battle with Marvels other characters.

Man, one of THE best series (mini- or otherwise) ever. Damn hardcore, damn truthful. Should be THE "Thor" movie; will shock the masses then cheer for Thor. Church.

Rich from start to finish. Plausible magic story, best believe.

I know that it's practically heresy not to love all of Brian "K" Vaughan's books, but I read the second trade paperback collection yesterday and pretty much hated it. Maybe I should have started with vol 1, maybe it gets better, but I did not enjoy it at all. Getting lectures on the writer's politics is not my idea of entertainment and whatever plot there was was pretty incomprohensible. Also, to get on the decompression soapbox, the end of one chapter had a character suggesting something to the Mayor guy, who thinks about it for four repeated panels of the same image (taking up a page) followed by a splash page of his head saying "Why not?" That's two pages to show one panel. At least I didn't pay for it.

I'm establishing right now that two TBs back (http://aintitcool.com/node/33 215) is a Harry Potter spoiler zone. That way this TB isn't spoiled.

Too many people know that Peter Parker IS Spider-Man now to make the skrull Spidey tenable. People would watch Peter Parker like a hawk from then on and it would become impossible to deny he was Spider-Man unless Marvel makes all of the reporters and intelligence agencies idiots.

I agree that Thor:Vikings is one of the best miniseries ever, about any character.

Thor in Oklahoma is the final straw. One issue of that book was enough for me, and I even like the much-hated "Strange" mini JMS did.

Yeh, the skrull thing will likely be used to "give back" Parker's secret identity. Marvel blows.

Precedence For Marvel Superheroes In Oklahoma

In the original DEFENDERS series, the Headmen moved their Headquarters to Oklahoma to put some distance between themselves and the superheroes in New York. Unfortunately, Dr. Strange, sick of the Headmen screwing with the Defenders' lives, diverted the Hulk from a rampage through the Southwest, straight into their stronghold.

He actually said "So what?" but that's beside the point. I thought the scene was very well executed. It's easily my favorite moment from the series so far. A real laugh out loud, fist pumping, fuck-yeah type moment. Also, having finished reading my Harry Potter book, I found it safe to return to the interent.
