You want to call them Eli Roth's of comedy? Im too lazy to do the work to find the financial statistics to prove it, but Elit Roth had 1.5 movies do anything. Judd Apatow has had success as a writer on The Larry Sanders Show, The Ben Stiller show, Freaks and Geeks (on dvd), and a SLEW of movies over the past 3 to 4 years as either a writer, producer, or director. He has proven himself countless times. Ill admit fully i wasnt a HUGE fan of Knocked Up, I liked 40 Year Old Virgin more. I will never discredit how successful he is, and for good reason. He makes quality movies that make you laugh, and feel good. BIG differnce from Eli Roth. Do yourself a favor and rent or buy Freaks and Geeks on DVD, itll all make sense to you then.

I think I'm the only person who thought "Knocked Up" wasn't funny. Maybe I just don't find the humor in quoting "Back to the Future". My only hope is that this is a better comedy than "George Washington" or "All the Real Girls". I don't think I laughed once when I saw those.

Sorry to be on my high horse. I have no interest in seeing another druggie movie. I guess Rogen writes what he knows, but this one just doesn't sound appealing. I was waiting for the one reviewer to say "Paul Rudd was laughing, so I guess it was ok."

So glad we've been given a reprieve from the Ferrel/Wilson/Vaughn regime. That shit was getting so tired. The Apatow/Rogen era is upon us. Enjoy everyone! (Except those people who don't know funny when they see it.)

Wise up, people -- they *always* say you are the first audience to see screening of the movie. People always cheer and believe it. It guess it makes you feel special. But you're not.

...is the second coming of Will Ferrell or whatever, but honestly, I don't see it. He's a big fat ugly unattractive guy who is mildly snarky, and other than appealing to a bunch of other big fat ugly unattractive guys, I don't get how he's going to be the "next big comedy leading man." I don't know any women who find him attractive (hell, even Ferrell was sort of cute in "Elf" and "Stranger Than Fiction"), so I don't know where this so-called popularity will spring from. He's just a step up from Dane Cook, if you ask me (another ugly, unduly celebrated unfunny actor).

of James Franco. seriously, the guy fucking rules. No, I'm not some gay Tiger Beat reader (though I'm all for the gays, seriously). I just finished watching Freaks and Geeks on DVD. Franco has yet to be cast in a film that fully utilizes his talents. He's an incredible comic actor, and just a really good actor in general. So's the guy who played Bill Haverchuck. Anyway, Franco is why I'm looking forward to this. Seth Rogen's cool and all but I'm glad Desario's getting a shot beyond his solid albeit rather humdrum supporting work in Spider-Man. For those who don't know, Netflix all of Freaks and Geeks now and find out. It's one of the best TV shows ever made.

My short review: Pineapple < Walk Hard < Superbad

I was there last night too, and as firmly as I'm attached to the suckling teat of Judd Apatow's creative output, I'm kinda Apatowed out. It's very very funny. James Franco surprised me with his timing, and it makes me wish he'd do more comedy.

It's a very simple movie. I recommend seeing it stoned. It will be much better when I see it in that condition, and it was already heartily enjoyable. It features more doobage on-screen than I've ever seen - even more than Half-Baked. YA RLY.

The first review said that the homoeroticism was "ultimately harmless." Would homosexuality be harmful? Just asking. Anyway.

It's nothing like Big Lebowski, which is undeniably the best film ever made. The Dude is just a peaceable guy trying to enjoy his life and have fun. Seth Rogen's character is an asshole trying to con and cheat his way through life, and not doing a great job of enjoying it either. It's very much a buddy comedy - a bud buddy comedy if you will. For some reason, the silliness of the movie reminded me of Mitchell, the horrendous Joe Don Baker-as-obese-detective-"thri ller" from the 70's - if Mitchell had been silly on purpose. I completely agree that the girlfriend subplot was dicey, but one more scene with her near the end would suffice, as she disappears completely in the third act.

In summary, Pineapple Express is on its way to showing that a hybrid of Dirty Harry, Cheech and Chong, and Mitchell can totally work. It's not as consistently funny as Walk Hard, and neither are as uproarious as Superbad, but it's still an enjoyable film from a comedy team that's seriously become the fucking Caligula of modern comedy. And to anyone complaining that he's releasing too many movies: what the flying fuck? Are you grieving all of those awful comedies that would've been shat out instead? Are you that hard for another National Lampoon-branded taintfest? Kurt Vonnegut once said that anyone who expressed rage and loathing for a novel was putting on a suit of armor and attacking a hot fudge sundae. I for one am glad to be enjoying this gigantic Apatow sundae. And I just made a disgusting mental image in my head of how that sundae is made. The end.

For posterity, I mean to say that the homoeroticism in the film, much as it was, came across as innocent and not homophobic. I get the sense sometimes that those comedies that might appeal to the frat set usual resort to gay-bashing, but I didn't see that here--which is an achievement in and of itself, when the homoertoicism still gets played for laughs. Like in "Hot Fuzz" (or "Lethal Weapon", JEEZUS), the real romance is between the two male "buddies". Even with the sort-of-jailbait. Also, thinking on it a bit, there are shades of Big Lebowski in the formula--but the tone of the two films is entirely different. Lebowski is a far more personal and internal story than Express; both are farces to some degree but Lebowski gets a lot closer to the real dread of classic noir than Express, which borders at times on National Lampoonishness (in the best possible sense). Again, the volume of action genre in-jokes in Express reminds me of "Hot Fuzz", but a little less reverential.

You read like a cinema student. Welcome to the crowd. I still think my declaration that it's like an intentionally-funny "Mitchell" is the best description of this movie so far. (P.S. I was just poking fun; you didn't have to copy-paste your gender studies essay. ;)
