Just out, from the GoldDerby LA Times forum. They are:

Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights

Patrick Dempsey, Grey's Anatomy

Matthew Fox, Lost

James Gandolfini, The Sopranos

Michael C. Hall, Dexter

Eddie Izzard, The Riches (wish that was a misprint, but it's not - WTF?)

Hugh Laurie, House

Denis Leary, Rescue Me

James Spader, Boston Legal

Kiefer Sutherland, 24 (once more, WTF with feeling)

Fuck this list (I'ma talking to youse, Izzard and Sutherland). No Edward James Olmos, nobody from The Wire (but who would you classify as lead actor on that show??)

I gave this show a shot (as I loved Deadwood) but tonight it was a bore. I also hate wierd for weirdness sake. At least in the previous episodes there was a focus. I think Davis Milch will be laughing his ass off at the people trying to make something of tonights show. It was a boring mess, just like he wanted it to be.

Open Letter to David Milch

Dear David Milch- I am a huge fan. I loved Deadwood, and I really hope those two Deadwood movies come to fruition. In the meantime, however, I have to make due with your new show, John from Cincinnati. I'm sure you've read many reviews and fan reactions that categorize your new show as "bullshit," and "incomprehensible, quasi-philisophical crap." Not to fear, though, for I have a solution. Season 1 may already be filmed and done with, but Season 2 (if there is one) can still be saved. Here's my pitch: John has the ability to travel back in time, right? So in the first episode of season 2, he just vanishes, leaving behind the Yosts, Luke Perry, Luis Guzman, and that gay lotto winner who's crazy and has no inner-monologue. And he travels to a little town called Deadwood. Bear with me, cause the drama is just getting started. After arriving in Deadwood, John from Cincinnati parrots back the words of Al Swearengen, who doesn't take kindly to mockery. Swearengen, in the heat of the moment, guts John with a hunting knife. Swearengen then turns his attention to running the old mining town. You could also conclude the season with a flashforward, in which it's revealed that the Yost's ancestors were migrant Polish workers killed in a massacre in Deadwood, resulting in their never being born. Anyway, mull it over and get back to me. Yours, Chris

I didn't see John's monologue as a dream sequence. I believe he transported himself while unconscious to deliver his message to all these people. There's got to be some significance to the fact that we haven't seen this guy sleep at any point before then.

bar none. "John From Cincinnati" is a quality show that I enjoy more and more, but to classify it as better than "Big Love" is a stretch. "Big Love" is the best cast show on television today, and has some of the best writing on HBO, which is saying something. And "Dexter" probably has "John" beat, too.

I don't know why some think it was a dream sequence. I mean, after John's speech the people are all still at the motel and some just get in their cars and drive off, wondering why they were there. John did say that they would forget the meeting but remember what had happened there. And in previews for next weeks show Cissy, says to John, "You were right about things getting worse" -or something like that. I say, yeah he was with Bill and Joe at the time but he was passed out, and before he passed out he mentioned something about Cissy's situation. So, mentally he wasn't in the van and neither was Joe and Bill. What I don't get is all the talk of cumming in someones face? And who was the dead guy -the guy from room 24?

Definitely (I hope) the 2nd coming. John having dialog, such as it was, with Sissy and then at the cook out was wonderful. That "speech" was almost biblical. Hard to understand but full of meaning. Can't wait to dissect.

Little currious that Mitch wasn't in this. The 1 guy on a higher plane (supposedly) misses out on the entire episode. Maybe Mitch really didn't need enlightenment.

This episode was a real wonder. John in ( Eli? John the Baptist? John the Revelator?)mode.

Yes it ALL really happened on the psychic plane. All secrets were revealed and bonds made and the future hinted at.

I think John is gathering his twelve, including Link.

Link as Judas? Mitch as Judas? Cassie as the head bringer?

This wasn't strange for strangeness sake it was full blown Nostrodamus revelatory and biblically prophetic, where each character becomes more strongly defined and bonded with their brethren. Where there are no secrets.

Where did this "Monad" surname come from? If it was alluded to in the show, I must have missed it. If it is really from the show, I'm assuming it's as meaningless as the Cincinatti reference to "John's" origin. (which was only just a random suggestion by Butchie) Also, weren't there supposed to be vampires in this show? Anyway, HBO better re-up this one. It's the only way I'll (partially) forgive them for cancelling Carnivale.

so did a look up on Wikipedia about the meaning of Monad. Monad for many philosophers was essentially a term for the first being. In Gnosticism it is the primal aspect of god. Another bit talked about one-ness or something like that. But after this episode I am leaning towards Jon being essentially a Jesus figure. I love this show and this particular episode rocked but I think too many people will find it weird or hard to follow. I have only had one chance to watch this episode so far but I am definitely going to watch this again. I think the dream sequence was prophetic. And anyone else not sad that Sean is gonna bite it a second time. It will be great to have his horrid acting dropped from an otherwise fascinating show.

I have to admit that until this last episode I was basically rationalizing the kids acting.... This show keeps getting me hooked more and more. I love Ed O'Neill's character, along with the title character John. Sadly I think this show is not going to make due to most American viewer's impatience. They are too damn impatient and need the show to spelled out in front of them. Also about the kid's acting, I highly doubt the kid is that bad at acting. I am 95% sure that this is how is character is supposed to be; lacking emotion, dull, and abnormal. Look at the whole cast, each character has their own kinks.

Jul 17th, 2007
12:17:04 AM
as pertaining to this past episode.....i think john was w/ cissy because as Russman points out john says "better she tries to shoot me and fails than tries to shoot herself and succeeds"..... that works unless he (john) was channeling someone else.....also, the big "dream sequence", which i dont like calling a "dream sequence" has me thinking this.... (and i needed another smart mid to even get to this....) everyone seems to be ignoring john when he goes on his rant....we get a lot of info we already know, some we just learned, some that has been alluded to, and some that presumably will come to pass (and unless i am mistaken, are introduced to a new character).... everyone is there, i believe in reality, except maybe cass, who aknowledges johns presence at the motel, and bill, who we know(?) is with john in v joes van.... now i know it appears that bill and freddie appar to be in a duet but that could be supposed..... i think the fact that bill is on his stairs, and the fact that john says shortly afterwards that "bill will not remember playing his harp" play towards the possibility that it was "real" for most, mental for all, but cerebral for only some of our characters....

The astral thing is the way to go, I think. He was finally really intervening in an overtly supernatural way because it was the only way to stop Cissy from ... And this is where I scratch my head: If John is "Jesus" then he should have had access to the omnipotence of the trinity and known that the gun was not loaded and Cissy in no real danger. Here are some possibilities: A) He knew it, but chose to intervene anyway because even her pulling the trigger dry would have been tantamount to the mortal sin of suicide, so he did it to save her soul. Or, B) (and this is the one I like) He didn't know it. John is not Jesus. He is some sort of Angel or Herald. Shawnie is Jesus (unless his anti-virgin mother makes him the ... uh-oh). Great episode. The show almost lost me there with the repetitive healings, but you must admit there is nothing else like it on tv. The dead guy from Room 24's evil grin/glare in the "family photo" was truly chilling. That and the Hawaiian drug dealer "demon" guy have my gut telling me this show has a dark side we haven't really seen yet. Vampires? Maybe Mitch finds some surfing in Baja...
Shawnie
by Pabodie
Jul 17th, 2007
12:56:15 AM
I doubt it's as strict an analogy as "Shawnie from Nazareth," but what the hay. He resurrected Zippy (and Zippy he). He's the surf prodigy. Absentee father. Mother being anti-Mary is puzzling and scary. "He will soon be gone." Again, I'm thinking John is the Prophet, the Herald, the Voice in the Wilderness. The Baptist. "We gotta get wet." Is this too on the nose? Is it magic realism influenced by scripture, or is it a modern allegory?

it could be the whole religion thing. This is most strongly illustrated by Dr. Smith, rejecting science for religion. John-John the Baptist, Ramon/Barry/Meyer-the three wisemen, Bill-God ("you were a better father to him than I ever was), Shaun-Jesus, Butchie-Joseph, Tina-Mary Magdelene, Freddy/Palaka-the aposoltes who were bothers (not the very similar appearance), Kai, Vietnam Joe, Cass (and possibly Linc)-Aposotles, Mitch-Judas, Sissy-the holy spirit. I don't know, pretty dense last ep.

...and i think the drawing john made with his foot was of a stick figure, the first art. it's a reflection of the point in his big monologue when he talks about cave paintings knowing the word of his father. art is how man reflects both god and himself. if we are indeed created in the creator's image our reflection of that reflection is the first step of spiritual awareness. all of the monologue dealt with the various characters' decisions both past and future and how they did and can move them toward or away from their spirituality. i also had a different take on the line "better she tries to shoot me and fails than tries to shoot herself and succeeds". this line is spoken to bill and i believe it was bill's internal monologue as he went to prevent his wife's suicide. i think bill tried to keep her from commiting suicide and slipped and fell on the spiral staircase (also mentioned in the big monologue), which kept him from getting to her in time. the fact that it cut to the gun scene with cissy was just and great segue.
