Austin Powers

I may be alone in thinking this, but I'm really looking forward to AP2, even more than The Phantom Menace. The original Austin Powers was quite simply the funniest, most enjoyable movie I have ever seen, that hit every note with absolute perfection and had me wanting more as soon as the BBC song had ended. And now the first screening reviews are coming in. Did that person say that a bit of editing and it'll be better than the original? I think Lucasfilm may have a bit of a nasty surprise in store this summer. I'm not saying that AP2 will do better than Phantom Menace, but it's going to take a fair bit of business away from it. Austin Powers has a massive following internationally, whereas Star Wars mania is more or less confined to the states. Sure, everybody loves Star Wars, but the level of obsession that the americans have with it somply isn't present in most other countries. Austin Powers, on the other hand, is a big deal, especially on my side of the atlantic. Most people I know can recite whole chunks of it (my fave: "my father was a relentlessly self-improving boulengerie owner..." and so on), while such words as "shagadelic" have entered everyday use. And the decision to parody Star wars is surely a masterstroke. It means that not only will Yoda-sick cinema goers flock to see it, but Star Wars fanatics will go multiple times just to spot the references. When is this one getting released? That'll be MY big day this summer. Baby.

Can you say "Thank You Jesus!" for the materpiece of womanhood known as Elizabeth Hurley!! I heard she wasn't going to be in the sequal- but at least she will have a cameo...That gives me and millions of other guys out there another chance to admire one of the greatest babes of all time!!...And oh, yeah...The movie should be pretty funny too!

But what exactly happens to her character in "American Pie." I heard she was one of the more "experienced" students at the school. I disagree about FAT BASTARD. I'm really looking forward to that stuff. On the contrary, I think the MINIME character might be the one that disturbs the audience if overdone. They'll realize that it is a real actor. I remeber being at a screening of the ill-fated "The Island of Dr. Moreau" a few years back, and the only thing people talked about other than Val Kilmer's Brando impersonation was Moreau's own MINIME. Finally, I totally agree that they need to fix the ending to "The Spy Who Shagged Me" immediately. Ending a movie with "it was all a dream" is one of the most tricky things to achieve. If it is just a typical alternative reality or mindfuck scenarios as in the case of Cronenberg's "eXistenZ" it can work. But when the audience finds out it was simply all (the 2 hours , the 7 bucks, and their concentration) a dream, it can backfire. Remember the end of Jennifer Lynch's "Boxing Helena?" I still have a bad taste in my mouth from that. People in the audience were audibly groaning.
Mmm...Zagnut. Peanut-buttery coconut goodness.
