PT Anderson's commentary on Macy's suicide scene...
by uss cygnus
Jul 12th, 2007
03:12:07 PM
Is absolutely incredible...he says how a UCLA college crowd at the first preview screenings thought the movie was just a period comedy and were laughing uproariously up to that point, cheered at Macy getting the gun out of the car...shooting his wife and big stud, and just went SILENT when he blew his own brains out. At that point he knew he had the movie he wanted to make with the simple theme of "It's all fun and games until somebody gets hurt." A must hear commentary.

Glad someone else commented on the commentary, specifically that part. It's great to hear how worried he was that that scene would be lost on the audience, but that everything worked out. There's also a deleted scene on the DVD that is a huge extended scene between Wahlberg and Guzman in one of the porns, and they act so uncomfortable, and inept, and mess up so well, that I still don't know if it was intentional, or they are actually making mistakes.

The most overrated films in Hollywood history, in no particular order: Crash; A Beautiful Mind; Shakespeare in Love. Boogie Nights, which won only a few major awards and did not make assloads of money, is nowhere near as over-hyped and over-praised as these three classic snoozefests. Plus it is goddamn great. Rock and Roll.

Seriously, this has been my favorite movie ever since I saw it in limited release back in '97. Everything about this flick is great. Directing, screenplay, acting, characters, quotes, music. I could watch "Boogie Nights" everyday for a year and never get tired of it. My favorite quote? "I'm not a complicated man. I like cinema. In particular, I like to see people fucking on film...but I don't want to win an Oscar...and I don't want to reinvent the wheel. I like simple pleasures...like butter in my ass, lollipops in my mouth. That's just me. That's just something that I enjoy. Call me crazy, call me a pervert..." Rebeck3, your abridged review is right on the money. Very overrated by fans (and not a single critic has included it on his/her Top 10--or even Top 100--list). Crapola, it's been over 10 years since Heather Graham was cast in this thing? I was confident that she'd tally some serious celebrity; I thought she'd be in a position of empowerment by now. But she sqandered her press on religious rantings (boo-hoo, they wanted to sexually repress me) and even cranked-out a failed sitcom. But I remember her as Roller Girl and that AUSTIN POWERS II scene when she slipped-on a white, abbreviated bikini. Yowza. Heather, why did your career do a vanishing act? Ya coulda been somebody (hope it's not too late).

I probably could have been a little more tactful. (Me?) But I'm just so tired of hearing this movie praised when I cannot for the life of me see what anybody is talking about. Like I said, I don't believe it for a single frame - not the world of 70's porn or the people that inhabit it or even recognizable human behavior. I think Anderson has contempt for his characters and his audience. It's all a bunch of glitzy film techniques and cardboard. But if you like it, that's just as valid. By the way, I checked out your Netflix queue and deleted, moved things around appropriately. We'll smarten you up eventually. I mean, really Mort, "The Waterboy"???

She's one of the great hotties. I remember first noticing her actually in "Drugstore Cowboy" where she dies too quickly and, even worse, stays completely clothed. I've always thought her performances were good - I have no idea why she didn't go further. But just unbelievably attractive and sexy. I'd watch any bad movie just to see her - and I have! Which I guess answers the whole where-did-the-career-go question.

Whoever doesn't like Boogie Nights needs their movie fan credentials permanently revoked fascist style and whoever thinks it's all style over substance has no fucking soul and has never been out of their hometown, house or comfort zone. It's an emotional rollergirlcoaster and if any one of those actors said "Hello. How do you do?" it would be a classic reading. The scene with Amber Waves and Rollergirl doing coke and making plans is so brutally real it's scary. It might be in the form of one big Russ Meyer meets Martin Scorsese gritty cartoon, but every emotional beat in it is real to it's core.

A five hundred pound drunken ginger beardy and his geeky sidekicks attempting to return volley ping-pong balls from some kind of human auto-serve machine is surely precisely what Tim Berners-Lee did not have in mind all those years ago. Lack of video footage also shows an embarassing failure to grasp the whole web 2.0 thing, whatever that is. Mind you, your paymasters at Penthouse probably have exclusivity rights on that. Ah, well. Some advice for you: always let Yoko go on top, no matter what. I don't care what kind of winching mechanism you have rigged up in your bedroom for your carnal thrustular delight, it's best not to risk it. b) Sometimes less is more, you know? Chum that shit to the five thousand on MySpace. c) Less amateur gynaecology, more movie stuff. If I want to lower myself into a cesspit of human degradation, I'll check my other bookmarks...

It introduced us to Heather Graham's glorious naked body, and that made the world a better place.

Heather's still around. She just has the bad luck of getting put in crappy, failed projects. She starred in a show that was cancelled after one week. She had several-episode guest role on Scrubs. She was in some limited release (maybe to video) flick where she was naked 'n stuff. Most recently, she was in a badly reviewed, limited release comedy in which she makes out with Bridget Moynahan. Look it up on Youtube for a bit of arousal... Personally, I like Heather and hope she can get cast in something good. After her run on Scrubs, I thought she coulda stayed a regular character. I babbled to long about Heather, but, ahhhh, Heather. *sigh*

I saw it for the first time in November of 97 and it instantly jumped into my top 4. I love everything about it, it's a brilliant film.

A true classic. PTA hasn't reached BN's heights since. A movie I can watch again and again. Great cast, great script, great camera work, great director, great film. "This is the TK421."
