Well, FORD looks great, and even though Lucas isn't in front of the camera he sure does look weird with all that white hair. Still, Ford seems to be having a good time, so no matter what has become of Lucas' storytelling ability, I have hope that Spielberg knows what he's doing, and I KNOW that Ford is on his game. Maybe Steve and Harrison can get into Lucas' head and help him see the light (of film rather than pixels).

are we supposed to freak out over this? Am I mistaken, or did absolutely nothing happen in that clip.

Plus people around here seem to be acting on the assumption that the general public thinks Harrison Ford is a decrepit old man who is hobbling around and falling apart as we speak and we need to be somehow reminded that he can walk and breathe in perfect health.

11:37:36 PM
The 35 and up crowd know where that saying is paraphrased from. I was eleven when I saw Raiders. I got home from the first showing and I was trying to describe how I felt. It wasn't scared, it wasn't excited, it was something I hadn't felt before. She said "you mean intense"? That was the day I understood the meaning of the word. In this world of letdown after letdown (Spidey 3, Pirates 3, Transformers, Die Hard 4) I definitely wish they weren't making the inevitable disappointment that will be Indy 4, however, these pictures and videos of Ford as Indy are totally working my brain.

US Military in the clip.
by kname2
Jul 12th, 2007
12:25:19 AM
If you slow-motion the clip where Indy is being held by the soldiers you can clearly see USAF and then 3 other indiscernable letters or numbers (possibly 995 or SS5) over Indy's left shoulder in the background. The shot fades to black before I could read them clearly, maybe someone else will have better luck. The uniforms are US Army circa the 1950's. My guess is we are back to the Roswell/Area 51 "little green men" storyline speculated a few years ago. I guess Indy went past the black mailbox into Groom Lake. I'm curious to see if this pans out as the UFO storyline or Indy in the Ark warehouse as others have posted. Time will tell.

And he looks like hes having fun and enjoying himself. Those few shots are Indy, and even in those few seconds it feels like an older Indy, not just Ford going through the motions. Check out his expression when he's being held by the guards - classic! I'm praying that Ford can get back into the role and start the screaming, shouting and face pulling that has been missing from his films the last 10 years. "START THE ENGINE!" "THERES A BIG SNAKE IN THE PLANE!". And Ford looks pretty good to, I never thought he'd ever be able to pull it off. We've had the still image, the moving image, now we need a clip with sound.

I'm fairly certain this movie won't suck, but there are things that can go wrong. As for rumors of tying this into the Ark...it could be cool if it's done right. However, best to leave the ark alone, unless it's just a mention. Wouldn't want to tarnish ROTLA. Making this film a bookend sounds great, but there's a lot more riding on this one compared to Rocky Balboa. I love Rock's 1,2,3, and 6, but the first Rocky is the only one that stacks up to a ROTLA classic. Lucas (and I'm not among the haters)worries me the most(largely because of the inconsistent prequels), but I think the three together can overcome that. Just hope Spielberg in particular, and Lucas to some extent, can reign in any liberal preaching. Don't need a bunch of politics this, politics that, walkie-talkie guns, or Indy wouldn't do this, or do that(based on Spiels and Lucas' 1990's-2000's mindset). Hopefully, any aliens won't turn out to be the real deal. One final note...I'm still amazed by all of the Ford, Spielberg, and Lucas age bashing. Realistically, almost all of us here will not age as well as Ford, and will probably be lucky to be somewhere between the three when we're in our 60's.

There are some parallels here....Schwarzeneggers last decent movie was True Lies. After that, downhill. Everything he made was rubbish, and we were seeing this great 80's icon slip away before us and turning into a joke. Then with T3, Arnie was back. He looked like Arnie, brought back a character that he was known for and played it like he'd never been away, making you forget the 10 years of crap he'd given us. Ok, opinion is split on the film, and Arnie was pretty much the only one to return from the previous 2, but I'd take T3 over the 6th Day or End of Days. But here we are again. We've watched Ford slip away over the last 10 or so years, a great 80's hero, and he's back playing a character that has been missed since 89. He's surrounded by the same team, and they are factoring in his age with the story and not trying to make him 10 years younger. From that footage he looks good, an if Arnie can look 10 years younger in T3, Ford can and will be a great older Indy. It could be worse, he could look like Stallone in Rambo IV....

...so long as he isn't directing. He still brings a lot to the table though. Between Spielberg, Lucas and Ford (who looks good by the way!), we should get a great flick. I'm not expecting anything as great as the original ROTLA, but if it's better than Films 2 & 3, which were kind of disappointing, then I will be happy. I worry about John Williams though as of late. That 40 seconds of footage was interesting. it made me realized that Jones can look okay with grey hair, but when I looked back at the pics in the Raiders and ToD stuff I have at home, I saw a much trimmer, younger Indy. One that it seemed more appropriate to be running around in dirty khakis and a ragged, half-open shirt in the middle of some wild country.

Would a 60YO Jones still be running around in the same thing 20 years later?

What do you mean "They change Acting stiles"? Are you talking about those things you use to get across fences in farms? Or maybe you're talking about the captain of the Excelsior in Star Trek III?

I didn't mind that film - probably the last entertaining film Arnie made before T3. The only part that really stretched credibility was him surviving a skydive when he opened his chute about 50 foot off the ground. Oh and it's funny about the alligators - they looked good at the time, but they look pretty ropey now.

Sure, it's all fine and good to see Indy with the hat and whip and everything...but what I want to see are some of those mad clarinet skillz that Old Indy (played by Ford himself) showcased in an episode of "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles" back in '93. Maybe he can duet with Willie...that is, if she ever made it to Delhi.

Sure, I know what you're saying, she was pretty hot. But the Nazi thing is hard to get past. And the Dad thing is even worse. The way I look at is this. Who do I want to bone? A good looking blonde chick who's a Nazi, and has slept with my dad, or a good looking blonde chick who hasn't slept with my dad, who isn't a Nazi, but who can sing, dance, and has a huge pair of knockers? It's simple maths. If both of them start with 5, say, Elsa gets 2 points knocked off for being a Nazi, then 2 for having slept with my dad, so she's a 1. Willie, on the other hand, gets 1 point for dancing, 1 point for singing, and 3 points for the jugs. Arguably you could knock off 1 point for the fact that she's a bit dopey, but that's not a dealbreaker as far as I'm concerned. So she's a 9, and Elsa's a 1. Simple Maths!

I don't know what planet you're on, but I will say that the scenes with Indy's daughter (and indeed all the old indy scenes) have been removed from the Young Indiana Jones tv show. They won't be on the DVD - so we can assume that Lucas is planning to ret-con them. Which I think is logical - they never worked in any case.

If you speak the truth, (you seem to be pretty deeply in, with all those famous wedding attendants) then don't let them fuck this up. If Shia/his character is gonna ruin the movie, do something about it! Incidentally, Harrison looks perfect in the video. Indy truly is back. Let's hope everything else around him doesn't blow.

That's what I was saying about smiling. Can you honestly remember him smiling in a recent film? In fact, wasn't Last Crusade the last time we saw that Han Solo grin? Instead we get the bullshit finger of doom. I like the Fugitive. I even didn't mind Air Force One. But he's been on autopilot since 1989. In Firewall he just looked like a tired old man playing 15 years younger, cashing a cheque. Honestly, Ford is my hero, for sure, but when I saw that film I had Charles Bronson in mind - a tired old man who just comes back for one more film to pay the bills, and really doesn't give a shit beyond making sure the right name is on the cheque. However, maybe I'm naive, but I think he really cares about this character, and I know the 'Berg does. I think this is going to be a T3 style swansong, and Ford is going to retire after this... one last walk up the red carpet, having a bit of fun on one last great film, rather than having us remember him with Firewall. Just a pity Sean 'LXG' Connery couldn't see things the same way.

The whole 'old Indy' parts were edited out for the most recent release. From what I've heard, they won't be on the DVDs, either. In any case, she was, what, 35? Indy was 93 in those segments. So he would have had her at 58 - exactly the age he's playing in the new movie!! It's hard to imagine Indy not getting his nuts in this time round - I suppose if Lucas was desperate, he could say her mum is Cate Blanchett, or whatever. But to be perfectly honest, I thought those segments never really worked in the TV show anyway, so I don't mind Lucas retconning them.

Admittedly, I hated the first version of Greedo shot first in 97. Partly, because it shouldn't have been changed to begin with, and the special effect absolutely sucked. The later redo of that scene for dvd, was only slightly better. And, you're right. Lucas probably wore the shirt because of Harrison Ford. Not so he could further "rape" some fans' childhoods. Oahu (that’s the island known as “The Gathering Place,” ergo, the main island in the Hawaii archipelago; ha. Ha. Ha. WHAT A PUN! “Arc” in “archipelago,” as in “arc” sounds like “Ark.” Yuk. Yuk. Yuks. Anyways . . .) CBS affiliate KGMB’s 07/11/2007’s 10PM evening newscast reported that Harrison Ford arrived in Hilo on 07/10/2007 (they didn’t specify if he flew there himself, but, tell ya’, tha’s a LONG ways from the mainland on a Cessna, or . . . what IS he operating nowadays?). The report also treated viewers to a shot of (and, if you guys already saw these already, my apologies): 1) a camera mounted on the hood of some 1940s-1950s style truck, I dunno WHO might’ve been in the driver’s seat, but, the truck color was that olive green you see on U.S. military trucks. Outside midday shot. Truck covered with obligatory dust; 2) a pic’ of – and this was a real quick shot; I tried to pay attention – Lucas and Spielberg standing together; 3) ‘Nother outside midday shot on a long stretch of road, a 1940s-1950s style U.S. army staff car riding alongside a 1940s-1950s style cream colored convertible with dark brown trimmings, cameras running alongside ‘em all. I’d provide a “tinyURL” link or can you guys, but, the KGMB ‘site has no accompanying e-story for last night’s ad. Sigh, tried mah bes' folks. By the way, if “KGMB” sounds familiar, especially when it comes to the period of “1940s-1950s,” those four call letters are of the radio station that you heard announced the attack on Pearl Harbor in M. Bay’s “Pearl Harbor” (and announced the real-life attack; yes, this IS a bona fide news organization on Oahu, first starting in radio then ending up as a CBS affiliate that continues to this day [!]. OK, OK, I’ll wait for the goose bumps to settle. Done? OK.)

Spielberg learned a lesson with Temple of Doom. Even if this IS a weak entry, a weak Indiana Jones movie is better than 75% of the crap that we see in the cineplex. Based on what little bit this new video shows, I think things are still progressing well. Excited to see a bit of the production in-motion, but what I'm psyched for is the SECOND trailer we get...probably next spring.

Despite the bullshit Jett tried to tell us last week, I really do expect that Lucas will have a similar trailer marketing pattern to that of the prequels. You pass yourself off as a novelist, but it seems you'd spend more time running spell check than writing. Then, you attempt to start a discussion regarding the deeper meaning of the films (the most intelligent thing you've posted) and pass it off as your sister... This late in the talkback, who really cares, but...I've seen Raiders of the Lost Ark over 350 times. I. Am. Not. Kidding. I lost count after 250. That was around 1994. Raiders is everything to me. My friends and family make fun of me. I actually saw a matinee with Kycolonel at the Showcase Cinemas on Bardstown Rd. During the car chase and Indy was driving the truck and the Nazi convertible drove off of the cliff into the canyon/cliff/abyss, he yelled, "Dukes of Hazard visit the Grand Canyon." I laughed my 12 year old ass off. This is the amount of memory I have dedicated to this movie. Therefore, trust me when I say...I am quivering with anticipation.

Jul 12th, 2007
11:05:05 PM
yes, as I posted yesterday...it does say USAF in the background...but, to correct another poster...those are US Army soldiers holding Indy unless Lucas and Spielberg didn't do their homework...the rank insignia are US Army...the USAF have used inverted chevrons for rank stripes since 1948 and they are always USAF blue and white with a 5 point star in the center...if this is the Groom Lake/Area 51 storyline...the UFOs could be the U2 and SR71 aircraft tested there in the mid to late 1950's...another possiblity if it's an Ark storyline along with Area 51...they tested nukes at Area 51 during the same time inthe 1950's...maybe in the film the US Military is testing the Ark on the nuclear proving grounds...could be a story where the US wants a working Ark because the Russians during the late 1950's in real history set off the largest nuclear device the world has ever seen, the Ark could be seen story wise as a more powerful weapon...just a few thoughts that crossed my mind today...time will tell...

I threw this out there many many posts ago, but nobody really responded. What if the connection between the atomic bomb testing that's been 'confirmed' for the next Indy is usa trying to blow up the arc? I like that better than maybe them using the arc's power to create the nuclear age of weaponry...that sounds hacky.
leaning more and more toward Area 51
by kname2
Jul 12th, 2007

I'm leaning more and more toward the Ark being brought back into play for a couple of reasons...Indy was mad about the Ark being hidden away at the end of ROTLA, and in Last Crusade he gained "faith" and became a "believer" to save his father's life where in ROTLA he all but says he is an atheist...maybe Indy's faith from Last Crusade and Abner Ravenwood being back from the dead are motivation for him to steal the Ark back from the US Gov't, and where better to test the Ark not mention hide it...Area 51...knowing the humour of the original trilogy I wouldn't be shocked to see "E.T." or the Close Encounters aliens frozen in Hangar 18 at Area 51 as Indy snoops around the place...I could drive myself crazy speculating how my favorite movie serial will be played out...

First of all, tip of the hat to Ford himself. I guess today is his 65th birthday or something...

Then some quote from Shia LaBeouf from his Vanity Fair interview:
LaBeouf: "I remember saying, 'I'm the least likely person to be here,' and Steven said, 'You and me both. I never wanted to make another one of these. We ended the series perfectly.' That scares me, as a fan and as the actor who's doing it. But Steven said he wouldn't have made this movie if the script wasn't right."

Please not Indy Son and do a new trilogy during the '60

Dear JettL93 if you speak with Mr Lucas please tell him to re-think about shia to be indy son, because like a fan i would like to see just Mr Ford/Indy in the pivotal role, i want to see a new Indiana Jones adventure, not Indiana Jones and a teenagers son, because the Mr Ford Age, mr ford age is not a problem for me, he will be forever the only Indiana Jones! and for me is wonderful hope to see and more aged and dark Indy, like a John Wayne or Clint eastwood in the unforgiven, i love more mature character instead teen characters, and please tell Mr Lucas fans will love a totally new trilogy during the '50 and '60!!! Ford can do it!!! and before will be too late shot others adventure not just one! Indian Jones is a great franchise with few episode, i will love to see in the movie history two indiana jones trilogy! come back to the post start, i remember when i saw Temple of Doom at the cinema i was 10 years, and i hate to see Indy with Short round character through all the adventure, right now i can buy it when i see it, perhaps for the nostalgia behind it, but now in my 31 years, i love to see Indiana Jones in his 60 without teenagers that help him, the american producers in these days have too much fear to sell movies with old guys in the main characters, i don't want understand it, i grown up with mature heroes, now in the latest movies and remake the main roles are all teenagers! why?

Abner Ravenwood
by Automaton Overlord
Jul 13th, 2007
09:43:44 AM
I glad they're bringing his character into this. My long standing theory is this; Why was Master occult arceologist Ravenwood in Nepal? -Because he was searching for the immortal city of Shangri-la. Why else would they be there? In real life, Hitler sent seven expeditions looking for Shangri-la! Lucas and Speilberg must have known this, They must have done at least a little research into Nazi interest in supernatural stuff. Anyway I believe this was built in to the Raiders script to set up a subsequent story that never panned out. Perhaps Ravenwood has not aged at all, held hostage in undying Shangri-la these twenty years. What do y'all think.
Abner's Age
by IndiAbbey Jones
Jul 13th, 2007
10:28:46 AM
Could easily be 65/70 if Indy is supposed to be 57. Although he was described as a Mentor to Indy it was only assumed he was significantly older. He could have been only a few years older in age but more experienced. Abner's age will not be addressed in this movie.

Belloq had the same motivation as Jones "fortune and glory" and the thrill of the discovery, he makes it pretty plain that he doesn't care about the Nazis one way or the other. The difference between he and Jones is the means he is willing to go to, to achieve it.

Donovan, on the other hand is entirely Nazi. Anyway there's plenty of difference between them for me.

Jul 13th, 2007
05:09:46 PM
Bellow was in archaeology for the same reason as Jones, but, like Automaton said, the difference is what they were willing to do for thier "prize". When Belloq says to Indy "It would take only a nudge to make you like me. To [push you out of the light" it illustrates exactly what differentiates the two men. Belloq's strayed a bit from the path in his time, hence he's gotten a bit greedy and accepted a partnership with the Nazis to find the Ark, a major artifact of unparalleled significance and grandeur.

Donovan on the other hand just wants to use his money (and influence?) to buy what he wants. He's greedy and has the means to use whatever/whoever to gain more, unlike Jones and Belloq, for whom there is thrill in the hunt for the object. Their appreciation goes much deeper than displaying what they find for others to marvel at. For Indy & Belloq, what they hunt and hope to find is ultimately the pay off for all their hard work; something Donovan's personality lacks.

Donovan amd Belloq were using the 3rd Reich, who were
by finky089
Jul 13th, 2007

also using them. It's sorta what makes the "bad" guys "bad". Using one another for their own personal gains.

The thing I don't get about Donovan is why he thought Hitler would't get to drink from the grail if Elsa had been sucessful in retrieving it.

Sure they presumably didn't know that the immortality would lose its effect if the grail passed beyond the great seal, but wouldn't Donovan have assumed Hitle would have drunk from it and then still been able to stay on top of the world for a while??

Yikes . . . been living with the lie for so many years ;). I mean, that is IF the shows are supposed to be considered in chronological order ("Temple" indicates "Shanghai 1935" in the beginning while "Raiders" cites South America 1936). Interesting, interesting. Also . . . nobody on this board from Hilo side? The Big Island? Can give us some "peek" news 'bout current filming? C'mon you pig hunters, find your way to the sets. :)

WXi, I can't remember where I read it or exactly what it was (boy, this is starting off really informative), but I seem to remember seeing somewhere that SS or GL wanted ToD to bet set after Raiders, but couldn't because of something that would have been inaccurate with the Japanese bombing Shanghai or something?

It's all foggy, but I think ToD ended up as a "prequel" only by coincidence. In spirit it was always meant to be a sequel.

. . . small or succinct . . . oh, by the way, finky089, thanks for that additional clarification. Hmmm . . . gonna need Spielberg and Lucas to just plain sort it out, or, heck, I'm ready to just trust a comparison 'gainst what a history book'd say -- "what would Indy do" in this case, eh? * * * OK today’s (07/13/2007) 10pm KGMB (again, if you need to know, KGMB = Hawaii CBS TV affiliate, the same “KGMB” call letters that announced the bombing of Pearl Harbor in “Pearl Harbor,” et al.) news offered a report regarding none other than a press conference, on the Big Island, held by some of the “upcoming Indy film release” (my description, not KGMB’s) producers. Executive Producer Kathleen Kennedy stated (KGMB news cameras were at the news conference and they got her saying this) that the first thing Harrison Ford wanted to do was to see if he still “fit in the pants” (geez, the money between him, Paramount, Lucas, and Spielberg, what, they can’t locate a Bill’s Khaki’s or something delivered overnight if not found on the island? Yuk Yuks). Despite that information, Kennedy had also mentioned what a lot of you are saying on this board after seeing Ford re-into the Indy garb – that he looks great, looks just as like the ol’ Indy we know. The news report also indicated that the filming should boost the island’s economy (is THIS right?) by $15 million. More interestingly, one of the anchors mentioned that after two days of filming Ford is – and, I dunno how ya’ll’re gonna take this; I’m still kinda’, I dunno, wondering about it myself, and yes, yes, I know the guy’s pushing . . . – reported sore from doing stunts. The report showed more of the Army staff car riding alongside that convertible (and, oh, yikes, the convertible is colored BLACK, not cream as I mentioned earlier, sorry ‘bout that; included this time was a scene of Spielberg and Lucas riding in the convert’, Lucas at the wheel if I’m not mistaken). And, pig hunters, never mind . . . the scenes for the “upcoming Indy film release” are apparently being filmed on a private estate on the island.

[regarding the stunts]``He's doing them, he just has a few more ice packs and a few more massages,'' Kennedy said.
``And a lot of Celebrex,'' producer Frank Marshall added.

and I don't mean "da shit".

If I remember the arguments of the LFODH-haters correctly, then it will be like this:

Raiders = good movie, Doom = bad, Crusade = good, Indy 4 = guess what? I hope not. I like the franchise and I like Ford. But I hate the grey fat guy. What's his name? Lucas or sumpthin'?

I admit I may have been wrong

especially about Ford. I was opposed to this film ever being made, probably just after What Lies Beneath. Up until then I could see it - Six Days, Seven Nights, while not great, did seem to show a Ford that was warming up for Indy, Air Force One, again I could see Ford being Indy again. Since then, I have been quite negative regarding Indy 4. Many people debate how good/average/bad TOD and LC are when compared to Raiders, but to me they are Indy films, and they have their charms and great points. If this film is anywhere near those 2 I'll be happy. After re-watching the Indy DVD and the making of the trilogy feature recently, plus Firewall, I just thought that Ford couldn't do it. That he had lost that something that made him Indy, that returning to the role he would ruin it. In the interviews on the Indy DVD he seemed to start of quite miserable, subdued, even un-interested at times. Its not until TOD and LC that we see Ford wake up a little, at one point he cracks a smile, but its not Ford. Firewall is the same, he looks old (and I know he's 65), out of it and uninterested, plus his inability to pick decent projects baffled me. Nothing against Ford, we all grow old, but my point is I was happy with the trilogy and didn't see any reason for a new film, Ford being the main reason. Thank god then for this footage. Ford has clearly put a lot of work in physically, hes smiling, and in that brief clip, being held by soldiers, he is Indy, he's pulling the right face and theres a twinkle in his eye. I'm interested in seeing an older Indy, but not an old Harrison Ford. There is a difference, as we have all seen over the last few years and why we all go back to Indy and Star Wars etc to be reminded of what Ford did. Can he again? I am positive. The set photos with him and Shia got me worried again, but this brief clip looks like everything is right. Maybe its wrong to judge it based on clip thats afew seconds long, but I haven't seen Ford look this good in a long time. Theres even a photo of him on gettyimages.com from 5th july at some bash and he looks better. Optimistic? Yes. I know its early days, but I think Spielberg may have found the old Harrison Ford, which was the main reason why i didn't want this made because I didn't think that was possible. "THERES A BIG SNAKE IN THE PLANE JOCK!" "THATS JUST MY PET SNAKE REGGIE" "I HATE SNAKES JOCK, I HATE THEM!!"

My skepticism was laid to rest when I saw the first pic posted... I had been weary about this. But there was something in the one pic that reassured me.

that the 1st photo was great. But....it was a photo, so then I started thinking "Its been tampered with" or something. So now I've seen that clip, I can now look at the photo and think "Theres Indiana Jones sitting there" and know that he is back, both in that image and the moving image. Man I'm excited now!
... my fear...

With the exclusion of Henry, and Indy in a quasi father role I'm hoping that they don't go over the top with the idea of "My father's words coming out of my mouth" so to speak. I think it could be done to great comedic effect, but has the potential to be cheese...

so, another tidbit is revealed... http://tinyurl.com/2jm9eo "The lush areas surrounding Hilo are filling in as a South American rain forest." "Hawaii will be featured in about 20 percent of the film." Indy going to see the Hovitos again? Maybe the Inca ruins?
