actually, they've done a good job seperating the books from the movies so i'd say you're qualified to judge the movies as stand alone. Personally I hated Goblet, but I think that comes from my love of the book. Goblet was by far the cream of the crop of the books and the worst movie for me. I hated it. It felt very cold and distant for me with no feeling whatsoever. The end saved a little but that was it. This movie just kicks ass on every level. Just missing a touch of wizard world majic that Azkaban had like the changing seasons for example. 3 was magical, this one is intense with magic.. if that makes sense.

apparently memflix can't pick up on the suttle acting through the movie that showed how much Sirius cared. Or what about the scene in Sirius's house where he is talking to harry about his family and then tells Harry how much he reminds him of his friend James, his father...and that seen was like a third of the way in the movie. Or when Sirius risked getting caught to see Harry off to school...so memflixed problem the movie wasn't one, memflix just wasn't smart to catch on...

Just think about it, it's the fifth film in a franchise. Even though they're based off of novels, and great ones at that, five flicks in the cracks would surely show... Well in the case of Harry Potter it's a resounding NO! I still think Alfonso Cuaron's Prisoner of Azkaban is the best of all five (he's a brilliant filmmaker and he injected what was needed) but considering this is David Yates's first feature film you've got to give him some credit for pulling it off in such style. It pisses on Goblet of Fire from a great height. Apart from the end scene with Voldemort and the Yule Ball sequence Goblet of Fire was a bit of a clusterfuck (don't know why that word feels relevant but it does). Yates has brought substance to the film. It doesn't feel much like a franchise flick, apart from the obvious things like the lack of the BIG conclusion that's coming in the 7th (BRING BACK CUARON FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, and JOHN WILLIAMS!).

Mammoths were indeed alive still around 10,000 B.C., although in reduced numbers. As for the pyramids, certain circles believe the Great Pyramids + The Sphinx are at least 12-10k years old. Geological and Archaeoastronomy point to the possibility that they are much older then previously thought. There was also a proverb in Ancient Egypt that went along the lines of "Time was young when the pyramids were old". Food for thought!

Not so much what they left out, but how they handled what was left in. Plus, Dumbledore sits there as Voldemort lectures Harry? Please. Half of the climactic fight looked like a 4th of July display with a repeat of the wand bridge from the last picture. And although Cho was partially redeemed, Harry turns his back on her despite being perpetually misunderstood himself? I didn't like how that was handled. Lots of loose ends left out in this one and barely any connective tissue. While I liked the depth they gave Harry in this one, it came at the expense of almost every other character's development. It also had a disconnected feeling to it. No true sense of peril. The fact that his friends all faced injury and sacrifice by joining Harry at the Ministry in the book was over simplified in the movie. Hermione was thought to be mortally injured in the book, and that was a crucial element left out of this one. Of course, that's just me. I enjoyed it, but I didn't love it. I was impressed with Daniel Radcliffe, though. He's definitely showing promise beyond these movies.

Everything was so glossed over it didn't really carry any weight to it. I can understand them changing some things, but some of the things they changed didn't really make a whole lot of sense to me. Having Cho betray the DA (even it was under duress) didn't make sense. She was the last person that would have done that. Keeping Nevil out of the prophecy was retarded. Ginny's 'growth' was limited to throwing a couple of spells and holding Dean's hand at the end. And how many montages can you stick in a movie? I was also sad to see all mention of quiditch taken out, though I understand the reasoning.

I've been waiting to see this movie, but my daughter left for a week camp to North Carolina this morning and I have to wait for her to get home. I've read the books (of course) and I have the 7th book to look forward to. But I'm determined to read them all (again) before I read it. POA was the best movie. Though I was taken in by the first. I almost hated the “Order” book, I wanted to reach in and kill Umbridge myself. My hopes for this film is that she is played well, and delivers that chill I got from the book character. There’s just something about sinister authority figures that hits me hard, I guess it’s my own strong dislike (aka hatred) for anyone who undermines the rights of youth.

Wow a serious letdown (in my oppion) though not awful not exciting either in any way... as for the trailers before hand Yes I would agree Fred Claus looks awful. 10,000bc looks great..when it comes to those kind of movies it's all about inventive effects (period). Look at Independence Day (seriously will smith punches an alien and saves the day) yeah great story...but fun movie to look at...if you're always going to be so critical about the movies you know are made just for fun & imagery why go. Where as Harry is based on a series of actual books so story is key and this didn't stick to it near enough or go far enough to recommend aside from the hardcore fans. The beginning and end which were being hyped as intense and action packed were weak at best......Oh and the trailer for get smart (longer version on the net) does look pretty funny...cheers..just remember some movies are just eye candy period...we all know that wayyyyyy before we see it.

I also liked the use of the Daily Prophet front pages to convey a good bit of information. This movie, for better or for worse DEFINTELY had its own feel to it.

Though it seems to be the unpopular opinion, I'd have to agree with RetroActive and phoenixmagi in thinking that not enough was developed with the material that was left in. I did enjoy the movie, but didn't love it, and people that I was with who aren't familiar with the books didn't seem to understand why Voldy was so keen to have Harry get that prophecy or what the "weapon" mentioned in the beginning could be referring to...I hated that they vindicated Cho, don't know if I bought cuddly Grawp, was devastated by the lack of character development necessary for the next installment and seriously wonder how Yates is going to tie up loose ends as he's left so much information out. That being said, the dude completely nailed the feeling of isolation, loneliness, angst and depression of the books. I adored Luna, love Neville even more, Umbridge was sick and the Weasley twins were fantastic. The DA scenes were really great, but on the whole, the editing and choppiness of the structure really bothered me. And the D/V battle at the end...how disappointing. Dumbledore's supposed to hand Voldemort his ass in that fight. But funnily enough, I think I remember watching an interview with Rowling where she says that she liked this movie the best of all, so who am I to complain if the author is OK, eh?

of course as a "fan" of the books there were a few things that disappointed me, but I do understand it's an adaptation, so things change. I do however wish that two things hadn't been left out, 1) The lady in the picture that screams [i forget her name, but I'm sure you know what I'm talking about] 2)Not a single mention of quiditch, not even in the newspaper montages. I'm pretty sure Sirius calls Harry "James" because he's mistaken him for his father in the heat of the moment. If the story had been told properly you'd know that people repeatedly remind Sirius throughout the story that Harry is not, in fact, his father and that he doesn't have his best friend back from the dead. Sirius is just a lonely man who spent 12 years trying not to lose his sanity. He's allowed to have has his moments of confusion.

I knew book 5 almost by heart because I have read it so much. I really hate Hagrid and Grawp. They were in it just long enough not to ruin it. Also if you have never read the book it might be a little confusing. Plus I really could not understand most of the British accents. Dan yeah but the rest...huh? I don't think Memflix was paying attention on this one. At several points in the film, both Sirius and Snape say Harry is just like his father (for one, it's a compliment, the other an insult). And in the room with the family tree, Sirius clearly says how much he sees James in him. So the 'James' mistake at the Ministry does NOT come out of nowhere. I actually liked how it was underplayed.

What I loved in this movie, that for the second time we get see what the wizard world at large looks like. Our first glimpse was the world cup in 4 - but this film offered so much more in the ministry of magic. Also, it was great to see what it means to be a wizard in a world filled with muggles. Very cool that the wizard world always is one step away from ours. < p > Also, how creepy was Umbridge? In the past Hogwarts had giant 3headed dogs, a dragon, a troll and all manor of creepy critters - but none as scary as her. The fact that evil comes in a small pink package makes it even more disturbing. Altough oddly, some people in the theater had trouble looking past her appearance. They kept laughing at her at a point in the film were she´s long exposed to be extremely menacing, and doing some heartbreaking stuff. I´ll admit it: my eyes teared up at the winter courtyard scene. But oddly enough, quite some people found this funny.

It was draggy in parts. There were a few times I thought about checking the clock... Final battle: Only the subject of a prophecy can retrieve it, but a bunch of wand-waving-wizards can make shelves crash down and destroy hundreds of prophecies? The duel between Dumbledore and Voldemort looked too much like the end of Ghostbusters for me. Don't cross the streams!!! Daniel Radcliffe: Maturing as an actor. Held his own. Emma Watson and Rupert Grint: Underused. Imelda Staunton: Frightening without being frightful. Really, really good. Helena Bonham Carter: Room With a View is one of my favorite films. Here she convincingly looks and acts like an insane person. I wish she had the opportunity to do more. Matthew Lewis (Neville Longbottom): Was really looking forward to more character development here. I think the actor can handle it. Evanna Lynch (Luna Lovegood): She's either an excellent actress or a wacked out nut case. Is this acting, or real life? Perfect for the role. Wow. Again....wow. One more time----wow. Grawp: Agree with the poster who said he looked like Alfred E. Neuman (crossed with a non-green Shrek). I'm glad I saw it once in a movie theater. Probably won't see it again.
