i'm sorry - but there is no way they will be able to cut the story down to a 2-3hr movie AND have it retain it's awesomeness. i'm sorry, just can't be done. in any case, i am excited for Rebuild.

Screw the live-action version, it won't happen. I'm a bit worried about this new Evangelion being made 'more accessible', I kinda liked not having everything explained to me as though I was a 10 year old. The ending of 'The End Of Evangelion' is a masterpiece, it'd be a shame to explain it away in a bunch of cliches.

Has there ever been a definitive answer as to what happens AFTER Shinji and Asuka end up back on earth at the end of the series, after he almost chokes her to death and does not. Does the earth and all of those souls almost made into one collective entity revert to normal? Are Asuka and Shinji an item? Are those killed restored? I wonder if the Rebuild is going to address these questions. Hopefully it will answer questions without dumbing the story down.

I like the inaccessibility of Eva. But the new animation might be good so who cares. I'm game. I first thought it was going to be a sequel which would be impossible to make seeing as how the first one ended. Hideaki probably trying to continue the popularity of the product. I heard that weta was working on a live action a few years back, it probably went the same direction as Halo.

Wow. It's not that I'm floored by what I saw in the trailer, it just hit me that these rebuild movies are coming sooner rather than later. Awesome. Can't wait. As for the live action Evangelion, Superbat hit the nail on the head -- it will own Transformers. Ultragoregrind: I've heard that the original plan is a trilogy of Eva live action movies. Don't know how accurate that is, could just be speculation. You're right too, if it's just one movie, they'll have to cut out so much that it won't be worth it. But I'll still see it. Finally -- why did they fuck up the NERV and SEELE logos for the rebuild? I hate both. What was wrong with the originals?

It's going to be a trilogy, so they can do it. Plus I'm trusting ADV's fanboy producers to do it justice. Plus I like the new SEELE logo, but I hate the new NERV logo. But at the very least they look kinda cool. I'm a mixed bag on them personally. I'm betting this whole rebuild project is tied into the live action movie somehow... like they're using it to raise more funds and create pre awareness and hype. Anyway It's good to see some classic scenes in that trailer redone with better animation. Looks great!
a trilogy

01:40:55 PM
..could be the proper way to do it. if that's the case then i'm a bit more interested in the live-action project (especially if they are released back to back. personally i'd like to see them push out one part of the trilogy every 3-6 months if possible[instead of say 1 per year a la LOTR]).

It's a personal project being handled by Eva fans at WETA, ADV and Gainax. And they're raising the funds themselves... so I wouldn't call it 'Hollywood' territory yet. And that makes it better. At best they'll choose from the bunch of claimed A-list directors that have contacted them with interest, make the movie themselves, and only get a Hollywood studio to distribute it.

Last I heard about Akira, Fox held the rights, but they're doing fuck all with it. The only way to do Akira justice would be to make a trilogy, each film covering 2 books of the manga. But of course, that will not happen, for one thing the budget required would be immense! But maybe that new video by Daft Punk and Kanye West will stir things up...

They are pretty much Adam and Eve, but not exactly. Shinji has the power to "remake" the world but it's unclear whether that means he can bring back all the dead. Besides, aren't the dead in sort of a soul-collective ether paradise?

I don't see the need to make Eva more accessible. The first 20 or so episodes (especially the first 10-12) are INCREDIBLY straightforward giant robot anime, with neatly packaged standalone episodes (think of the synchronized dancing EVAs). If they make it MORE accessible, that can only mean dumbing down the mind-blowing finale.

And the live action Evangelion makes me cringe.
I don't see back to back happening...

For one thing although they've said they've raised half of the 100 million budget for the first film. They'll need to hope the returns on the film will fund the next. What I tihnk they should do is, make the first film a sort of stand-alone film covering the first 1/3 of Eva, and make it a character/action driven spectacle with scatterings of Comedy. Not like freaking Transformers with the overdose of comedy, but it'll be best to sell the first film to wider audiences so people like it and like the character interactions which would particularly fall on the shoulders of whoever plays Asuka and Misato. Just like the series. Then when you've got the audiences in the bag and profit large off of the first movie. They'll tag along for the next one. End that on a good cliffhanger and they'll be there for the third. The first film can be lighthearted fun with some foreshadowing overtones. The second film will transition from that to the darker depressing storyline... and the third end film goes for what I like to call "what the fuck?" spectacle territory. Think of it like the Matrix Trilogy. First film is great and loved and works as a stand alone flic. Second film transitions the audience and moves away from what appealed in the first to general audiences, and the third will alienate them... but works out fine for Eva fans who should expect it.

Sigh... I always hoped I could someday do a live action eva... I had many crazy ideas of how to tackle the third impact... :P

***SPOILER*****

10 years ago I waited month after month for Evangelion to get released on VHS through ADV... I scooped them up at over 20 bucks per "Tape" and loved almost every minute of the Saga.. until the end..

You take a prodigal young boy tethered to a giant robot destined to save the world from what seemed to be God's "Angels" sent from the heavens to destroy us... and you go and kill everyone and end it on a beach with 10 minutes of silence and some fucked up schoolhouse dream sequence... It was so horrible I never purchased Anime ever again. ( its been ages so the memories are hazy ).

that's spot on. It's quite rare, and almost impossible in talkbacks to read something so well understood about the show. I was and still am to an extent, a big fan of anime, so watching Evangelion evolve over the episodes was (no pun intended) a revelation. I think only the original Gunbuster has made me feel so utterly wiped out at the end. In my opinon, anime changed completely afterwards, now, it seems there's two distinct genres, philosphical/mind fuck and parody. Anno took what was essentially a fan pleasing and, for lack of a better word, dumbed down medium and fucked the shit out of it. I see new things every time I watch the final episode of Eva and the movies never fail to kick my ass, Asuka rising out of the lake to that music remains the best thing to come out of Japan since pocky. I remain a tired old fanboy so any new Eva is good, but why spoil it? Leave it as it is and let the coming generations make up their own minds.

...then again, maybe I'm just stupid. Could never connect with the characters (they never really "did" anything), the battles were too short, very little could be considered excitement, and it just seemed to recycle the same Tomino/Nagai themes from yesteryear. At most, it was "decent." That being said, I am interested to see how these new movies turn out. Maybe I will go back and re-watch EVA before then.

The problem I had with the ending of the show was a sense of pretensiousness that was not there for the rest of the show. They build up wonderfully to a conclusion and then instead of even explaining what has happened it goes into Anno trying to explain some revelation he has had. Then when no one really gave a shit what personal thoughts he had he throws a temper tantrum and you get End of Evangelion being the orgy of everything that it was.

It's to Eva's credit that it fundamentally changed anime.

That said, what anime became is pretty awful. Every single series feels like it's written by someone who got molested as a child. All these moody, depressed characters belong in french cinema, smoking cigarettes "le world is shit". I think Cowboy Bebop (though it had its fair share of gloom) and Escaflowne (series), plus all of the studio ghibli stuff, stand out because they aren't so far up their own asses.

I reckon a live-action film could very easily be made
by Monkey Butler
Jul 10th, 2007
08:33:24 PM
The themes can very easily be summed up in a 2.5 hour movie. Not all the action could be fit in, obviously, but I don't think it would need to be. Cut down the number of Angels, play up Seele's Instrumentality Project and the mass-produced EVAs, focus on the relationships between Shinji and Asuka, Shinji and his father and Gendo and Rei and end it with Kuarou (sp?) coming to Earth and Shinji killing him to prevent 3rd Impact, while Seele and the mass-produced EVAs attack Nerv and Units 00, 01 and 02.

A live-action version of Evangelion wouldn't have to be a cut-down version of the series; just a revised version of it, just like this rebuild seems to be. Sure the "more accessible" bit seems a bit worrying, but that doesn't mean it has to take anything away from its interpretability. Maybe the accessibility just means that the backstory about Nerv and Seele and the characters will be shown more conventionally, it doesn't have to mean dumbing down.

"Escaflowne (series)...stand out because they aren't so far up their own asses." Hrm. I though ESCAFLOWNE was boring, pretentious crap; but again, this is me so I'm not going to denounce anyone for liking a particular show (different strokes for different folks). I preferred it when it was called AURA BATTLER DUNBINE. I stick with my notion that anime was not fundamentally "changed" with the coming of EVANGELION. Angsty boys and their big-honking mechs had been around since the early 80's/late 70's. The only thing EVANGELION really did -- and this was in part to having a production crew that grew up on GUNDAM, MACROSS, etc. -- was remind the public of what sci-fi anime used to be like. Right now, I believe that the best format for anime remains in movies and occasionally OVAs. Television series CAN work, but that's few and far in-between.
Evangelion ending

My take on the ending of EOE was always pretty basic and optimistic, honestly - Kaworu and Rei say all the souls of the dead from Instrumentality can return if they wish, and one supposes that would include Misato, etc. Shinji and Asuka are just sitting there waiting for things to revert, but in the meantime, alone, there's still awkwardness and pain between them - and there always will be because that's being human, but they (and Shinji) will be able to live life.
Eva is NOT a "giant robot" show, dammit!
by David Lazarus Long
Jul 11th, 2007
05:29:29 PM
As drturing pointed out quite perfectly, the show is about the PILOTS, especially Shinji but really all of them, and the way they cope with having this responsibility at such a young age. Shinji has a lot of issues with his dad, the death of his mother, his own inability to be what everyone wants him to be and not knowing what it is he himself wants from life, the world, the people around him...

So many people sit down to watch Eva expecting... well, Transformers. Big robots kicking the shit out of eachother. Explosions every 30 seconds. Not the slow, methodical deconstruction of a young boy's mind as he faces all the struggles of life as a teenager while at the same time fighting (usually against his will) to defend the entire WORLD from annihilation.

The only series to come close to the intense psychological mind rape of Eva is Paranoia Agent.

because I don't really like when they try to make live action anime. It just... doesn't really make sense. It's like cramming the universe into a dixie cup. Who would do that?
