Both videos are pretty cool. Pete was a little too graphic about the fumblings-in-the-dark (Eeewwwww!). It was still really funny. Bub-bye Drafthouse.
Hey Harry. Why are they doing this anyway?

If it's so great, why abandon the old one for the new one? Is the old one so old? Is the new one bigger? Better? Just newer? What was the motivation? I've never heard WHY! Just wondering. L.H.P.

Drafthouse closing

The original location's 10 year lease was up. The cost per month, for the next lease was too high for a single screen to support. An opportunity arose to restore one of the classic theaters just 2 and a half blocks away, where they could have 2 screens and a better lease agreement. PLUS - clubs on all sides of the Drafthouse began having loud loud acts without adequate soundproofing - and the noise bleed was helping to dampen the "Drafthouse" experience. All said, sometime in late September/early October we'll begin a new legend with an even more amazing location. It's just sad to lose the original.
Maybe I missed the post ...

But it seems like as a website focused on reviewing movies, that posts obituaries for every dead celebrity that ever had a bit part in Mole Anus #12, there should be some mention of Joel Siegel's passing. I mean, I didn't agree with the dude all the time, and he did walk out of Clerks II, but all the same ... where's the obit for this guy? One of the most recognizable faces around, save Ebert. Did this site run something about Siskel passing? Anywho ... I hope that one day Kevin Smith listens to his radio interview with Mr. Siegel and stabs himself in his fat ass. Not out of guilt or any of that other whiny shit, but because Siegel had every right to walk out of his movie. And he just sounded like a total bitch crying for a titty on that interview. He harped and harped so much that I wanted to just put a pacifier in his mouth to shut him the fuck up after minute 15. Okay ... now that I'm totally lost of points to make ... goodbye.

I've had all three theaters in my hometown close or be torn down for the same reasons. That was in the late 90's. Sad times. Now we have one theater with as many screens as all three of the old ones. Oh well...

your first impression when you went in it was to notice how low the ceiling of the actual theatre is. It is a rather flat, wide seating area that is the opposite of the stadium style seating prevalent in most modern theatres. It felt like a playhouse more than a movie theatre, with an endearingly "dank" quality. Also, you had to compete for street parking with the nightclubbers. In contrast, the other Alamo Drafthouses in Austin and Houston are constructed more like what you expect: high ceilings permitting really big screens and stadium seating, multiple screens, & a spacious parking lot. For example, The Transformers event with Dinobot chewing up cars in the parking lot could only be possible at the Drafthouse South, because downtown in Austin it would cause a traffic disaster. The Drafthouse South was really stealing all the thunder lately, frequently beating the original in polls of best local theatre. As someone who only moved to Austin less than a year ago, and doesn't have the invested nostaliga in the original, moving to the Ritz sounds like a no-brainer. For the Drafthouse downtown to have two screens instead of one smaller screen will allow them to show opening weekend first-run releases there rather than just previews and rep programs. In the past year I've only gone to the downtown location for midnight horror movies and SXSW screenings. I saw Hostel 2 there with the great pre-show involving whipping and more fire onstage than I'd ever imagine AFD would normally allow. But generally I see movies at the Drafthouse South instead. I'm looking forward to seeing the Ritz Drafthouse, I view it as a necessary evolution.
Nice job Dave

Or does Edgar Wright just LOVE being on screen? Don't get me wrong, his films are very enjoyable, but, well, you know... why not just rent out 'Dawn of the Dead' / 'Bad Boys 2' / 'Point Break' instead?

It's really, *really* ironic you going on about whiny bitches, and posts that aren't interesting enough to take much notice of.

Lol, amusing videos. Sounds like the Drafthouse was a great place. Maybe one day I'll make it to the new location.

The Kevin Smith thing was off-topic. I just find it disappointing that on this site I've been browsing for, I dunno, 7-8 years ... you get to see obituaries for anyone who could loosely call themselves a movie star. And you get to see obituaries for a movie house. And besides that ... anything that a Transformer farts, an elf regurgitates, Indiana Jones plays on his platinum harmonica, or when Kevin Smith gets all pissy about Joel Siegel walking out of his movie! We get to read about all that, too.

Yet ... a person who has dedicated themselves to movies for their entire lives, just as much as any star or theater (should a theater be considered alive enough to earn an obituary), and there is no regard ... not even from a crew of folks who also dedicate themselves to movies in the same capacity. I find that, to borrow your twinkly stars, Raw_Bean, really, *really* ironic. Yet,

I don'y know if you noticed the previous posts or not, but I've been saying that all day. Where's the tribute for him? I see a tribute to an original location for a movie theater, one that's moving several blocks away, but I don't see a tribute for a lifelong movie-aholic who just died way too young of colon cancer, leaving a wife and kid, and an empty spot on Good Morning America, where his goofy ass moustache should be.

Assclown. And I think Michael Bay's picture is indeed next to that word in the encyclopedia. And about the Drafthouse. I guess people had a lot of memories invested in that place, so sorry to see it go. But it's not like it's closing down for good - just moving. Shit ... buy the building out and convert it to a private video store or something if you feel that nostalgic about it.
I'll miss it.

Edgar Jackson and Peter Wright are hilarious. Thanks for sharing this with other people and letting those of us who were there reminisce. The dinner thing was too expensive for me but I did go to the last two shows. So sad but, true to Alamo style, so much fun. Susu was great too. Just a wonderful, wonderful night. Hoping for the best at the Ritz.

I speak for a lot of people in this town when I say "BOO!" to moving onto 6th street. Parking's a nightmare, the crowd on the street early already sucks and just wait until you come stumbling out of a midnight show at 2 am, only to run into a pack of drunk Abercrombies who are more than willing to ask you 33 times "if there's a problem" before you can actually make the 16 block walk back to your car. I for one think Tim made a mistake. That said, as long as the Village stays open, my only real gripe will remain "bring the old french fries back!!!"

I don't fault Aintitcool if they don't have an obituary for Mr. Siegel.

I think it's best they don't just slap something together, but have someone that cares shine light on this man.

Anyway's, I'm saddened I never got to experience this "Drafthouse". Sounds pretty damn cool indeed.

Kevin Smith wrote up a Joel Siegel-ish tribute on his MySpace page. The least likely source! Congrats to Mr. Smith for admitting his run-in with buffoonery during his radio interview and for being more on top of shit than anyone at AICN, at the moment!

One of these days I too will make the pilgrimage to an Alamo Drafthouse – sadly it won’t be the original but… like Wright and Jackson (or Jackson and Wright) said, the owners are moving on to “bigger and better things”. My 14 year-old desperately wants to make the pilgrimage with me – no doubt she will.

That random "never before seen" Phantasm (V?) clip was interesting. I met Angus Scrimm 2 weeks ago at a screening and he said they had a cast reading a while ago for Phantasm V but that was it. No filming. Perhaps a deleted Phantasm IV scene?

...Damn! I've been reading about this Alamo Drafthouse joint and Harry's Butt-Numb-a-Thons for almost a decade now. Thought maybe if I was forced (and yes, it would take considerable force) to actually go to... (ahem)... Texas... well, maybe I'd drop by to assuage the pain of having to be in... (ahem)... Texas. Now, alas, this near-mythical place is no more. Damn Harry, with your considerable generous proportions, it seems like you coulda attempted an Arthur Dent and thrown yourself in front of the 'dozers for at least a few minutes!
