I'm a huge fan of all the the early John Carpenter movies. This is a director who was on one hell of a roll for about 12 straight years. At his best he was all about entertaining the audience and Escape From New York did just that. Snake Plisken was a great character but I always felt that Escape From LA, while a guilty pleasure, was not a worthy sequel. Kurt did a great job, but let's not forget that even he admitted he was doing basically doing a Clint Eastwood impersonation. I like what Gerard Butler did in 300, but what I really like is that he seems to have some grittiness to his real-life personality. With the right director this could be a damn good movie and a great way to bring Snake back. I'm not sure I agree with the Paul Verhoven recommendation though. Robocop and Total Recall are 2 of the best action movies around but his style can be a little too over-the-top at times. He was pretty much making crap until Black Book which is one of the best movies I saw last year that nobody in America seems to know about. Escape From New York needs someone can combine the grittiness and action with a little commentary that isn't heavy handed. The unfortunate part is that there doesn't exactly seem to be a lot of great action directors right now. Outside of Zach Snyder, who's all wrong for this, I can't really think of an up-and-coming director who could make this movie the way it needs to be made(meaning nothing like that horrible Assault On Precinct 13 remake!!!).

I love the original, and I see no reason to remake it. However, I don't inherently hate remakes. I just wish they were good. So far, this one seems to be on the right track. It won't be Snake, though, without Kurt. They better give him a bad ass cameo at the very least.

The music should be electronic vintage synth / drum machine based, not the orchestral shit used for EFLA. I agree with the review that setting up the war in Middle East is a VERY BAD MOVE. LENINGRAD IS THE SHIT. COLD, SNOW, is way more efficient on the screen, than sunny desert. They better change that, or this is gonna sucks period. BRING BACK THE LENINGRAD MYTHOLOGY.

As a remake I won't watch it. Give it a different title, change the story and the names a bit (I didn't read the script) and show as a brand new film we can bitch about how much it stole from EFNY. Remaking a classic, which still works, is disrespectful. If you had respect, you would clean up the original and bring back to the big screen. For those youngfuls who didn't see the original, the name EFNY doesn't mean shit, so they just don't care about that name. I do.

If it's better than the original : drop Plissken being wounded (it slows the movie down) and in fact, it would be better with a different structure.

Let's act 1 being the Leningrad (fuck the middle east) origin, showing how Snake lost his eye, and how, conned by the US govt, he becomes an outlaw. End act one with the bank robbery. That's, like Casino Royale structure, 50 mn of film.

Then act 2/3 is him doing the new york rescue thing compressed down (drop the fight in the arena, the wound, all that shit), finish with Plissken triggering WW3. Now, that's a movie I want to see, with the character having an arc. Flashbacks are shit, they detract from the main plot.

This sounds awesome.

I wanna see the movie opening with Plissken and his rescue team infiltrating Leningrad with the gliders, taking the hostage back, only to discover they have been had by the US governement as their mission is a decoy.

The are all killed while retreating, and Nerve gas is all over. Snakes googles crack on the left eye, and he his blinded. Still he manages to ESCAPE FROM LENINGRAD. He can't stand light from now on. Forced to wear the eyepatch. Snake confront his superiors, but is court martialed instead. Snake escapes, goes to see his parents, only to find their house have been confiscated by the US govt, and his parents killed by the United States police force as retribution. In rage, Snakes blows up a SWAT car with a molotov cocktail, kills all USPF he sees, and disappears.

Montage : Snake's rampage have make the TV news saying Snake is still on the run, he is now hailed by the populace as a hero, tracked by blurry TV news footage. We follow his exploits in a montage. Snake is the ultimate anarchist, sabotaging everything he can in the USA, always making his escape uncaught. The TV says Snake may have been killed in Cleveland when a building was blown off by the USPF to track him. 200 civilians were killed, and they pin it on him, but Actually Snake is actually alive and escaped. People know the news are all fake. Making the bank robbery with his friend, Snake is caught. At the same time, the president's plane is hijacked. The country is going into chaos.

Now, we switch to EFNY mode. Let's drop the fat from the original movie, and make the rest one hour of Plissken "I heard you were dead" trying to rescue the president while his clock timebomb tick. Drop all the CGI "dawn of the dead remake" crap, let's put the money where it needs to be, one hour of intense suspensful countdown as Snakes tries to make it before he is dead.

Now, here's the damn movie I want to see, not some overblown CGI riddled remake ! if New Line wants to contact me for a rewrite, (yeah, I actually have some uncredited movie rewrites under my belt) email snakeplissken2024@hotmail.fr, I'll be happy to help :)

Namco Game
by AvonBarksdale
Jun 30th, 2007
04:29:18 AM
The Namco game was canceled. As were the novels. Both of them were going to jump all around the timeline. The Battle of Lenningrad. How Snake lost his eye. What happened during the 17 years between New York and LA. The Anime was being done by Production IG who did Ghost in the Shell and the anime sequence in Kill Bill. That was going to take place after the events in Escape from LA. Kurt Russell was going to lend his voice and likeness and John Carpenter was going to provide music. Unfortunately everything seemed to have stopped when Debra Hill passed away. It would have been cool. The comics did come out as a 4 part series that took place the day after Escape from New York in Atlantic City. Unfortunately those we're published by Crossgen who went out of business so I doubt there will be any more.

i think a 3D animated series or movie sounds WAY better than this remake. a remake will clearly kill the series, at least as we know it. Snake will be this new guy and whatever he does with the character, good or bad. we will NEVER see a 2nd sequel to the original... we will not even be able to hope it will happen! i think the whole deal sounds retarded... why EFNY? why not an original work INSPIRED by EFNY? asswipes!!!

Let's face it, Kurt created the character with Carpenter and Castle, we now live in another world. As with many Carpenter movies, the promise / premise is better than the actual final product. Don't get me wrong, I did Carpenter early stuff, but they all had great ideas that somehow lost their focus, until the climax made it worthy. Assault is his best movie anyway. Now, having seen the worthless Assault remake, waiting to see the H1 remake, I can understand why you feel frustrated. And reading the script report, I can understand your fear. They only miss Zack Snyder to make it GUNSHOT. Let them hire me instead, I'll fight for the remake integrity tooth and nail snakeplissken2024@hotmail.fr
EFLA was the first EFNY remake
by stamper
Jun 30th, 2007
07:40:56 AM
I did kind of have a soft spot for EFLA, apart from the awful music and the fact that snake fights are unlike the real snake (the real snake only need to hit you once, he doesn't get engaged into endless fistfights, like a cobra, he strikes once, and you're either KO or dead).

Also EFLA fails in regard to the gunfire, trying to be Terminator like, when Snake only uses silencers and is directly lethal with one shot. The surgeron general sequence was fine, but they didn't film the gunfight when Snake is mowing them down before going in the severs. They are hundreds of badly done things in EFLA, and some really good things also.

The point is, Carpenter and Russel already did remake their great first movie, and it failed. So we don't need a straight, CGI ridden remake, we need as Carpenter as stated in interviews, a real origin story, incorporating the EFNY storyline, ie something different, that like CR or BB restart the franchise for more than one movie.

Anyway the point is, the script as reviewed above makes up "modernisation", with overblown decapitations, armies of people killed etc... let's face it, Snake could never witness all this, all he cares about is his mission. The should stick with his point of view while he is there, and make it slicker. Since it will be rated PG13 anyway, all this useless CGI killings should begone.

About the middle east thing, it's already part of Snake's world, as the war originally started from the middle east. The point is, this war got all the three big nations (europe, russia, america) at war with each other, and the president is on his way to a peace summit to threaten worlwide annihilation unless the other two comply. It's important in this era of Bush and fake elections, to show the president a a complete bastard (like the real US president is). That's why we need another Plissken movie, not so see some CGI armies getting killed, or to slavishly copy the original (which has no point), but to make america face their future with a clever, intelligent, fast paced, nightmarish, action ridden flick that will send nerds in hardon frenzy. Remember when McClane turned around, and "I hate niggers" was painted on his board ? The whole theater cheered, the white, the blacks, everybody had a grin up to the ears. That's the kind of Plissken movie we need now, not some Rob Zombie overblown bombastic noisy nothing with gore.

08:38:04 AM
So it's a bit hypocritical to preach against anyone doing a 'remake' of a remake of "The Thing From Another World". Otherwise, I agree with the article. I am almost always against remakes. Occassionally, you'll find a remake of a bad movie that is done very, very well. But, in general, I think even attempting to remake an original movie is like shouting to the world, "I can do this movie better than the original crew did." In reality, all it says is, "I have no creativity, so I have to steal someone elses idea."

One: Doesn't the extensions to the original sound like they're turning it into 24: The Movie? Conspiracy against the President? Hey, how about Powers Boothe?

Two: "Ever wonder what it would look like if well-outfitted Government Forces clashed with thousands of armed inmates on the streets of NYC?" -- I don't really have to wonder, because Children of Men did something similar. Now, it'd be interesting if someone else besides Cuaron directed and provided a differing POV (and removed the blood from the camera lens), but it has been done, imo.

by BurgerKing
Jun 30th, 2007
10:49:09 AM
Because no matter how you look at it, remakes are unnecessary. If they are carbon copies of the original, why bother? If they are too different, they ruin the image of the original... Dawn of the Dead was a good remake because it had the same feel but had it's own significant differences. It was very different and very much the same, which is why it was great unlike most remakes. As with King Kong, no matter what you think of it, it was acceptable because of the new CGI that was capable to reimagine the story. Don't know about this one though, I'm not sure there's a whole lot they can do to make it fresh and new but still loyal...

If not it would have to have been set in the 1980's (not opposed to that) to have been a veteran of Vietnam. I agree though that if this script changes a few things (The apparent bad conclusion and middle east conflict refferences) we could have an awesome flick. Hell, give it to Cronenberg, he did great with A History of Violence, and he can add that unpolished 80's feel to it. He might be too visceral, as long as it dosen't go to anyone with the initial's W.S we're ok.

Not that I can recall. New Line's hiring Butler cause he is still cheap I'm sure, and based on the selling point of 300. The original was pretty low budget for the scope and cast involved. They'll probably hire that director that did The Nest ( a nifty Assualt on 13 premise ), and that meh Hostage with Bruce Willis. Again, to save money. Any thought of bringing in an A-list director is simply out of the equation.

Surely Cronenberg "understood" the original, and surely they couldn't do the effects in the remake in the 50s, but those lameass criteria don't fit. Cronenberg and writers took the concept, made a completely different movie, made one both more technically advanced and simply better than the original. Seriously, I would rather see a completely different take on a concept in a remake than the same scenes repeated, the same movie with added shit. Merrick's dumbass two criteria could be said to apply to all of the worst remakes too.

Snake Plissken = Kurt Russell. To try and remake this film at all shows NO FUCKING RESPECT! Some things don't deserve to be remade! Hey, let's remake The Godfather, or, The Shootist (Will Smith can play John Wayne dying of cancer) blah, blah, blah, BULLSHIT! Some people will never learn that some characters are stamped forever with the actors that made them, made them their own. Indiana Jones IS Harrison Ford, Snake Plissken IS Kurt Russell. The Beatles are who they are and anything else is a cover/tribute band. There is nothing wrong with cover/tribute bands, because they are not stupid enough and disrespectful enough to pretend to be the real thing. Fuck This Remake! Fuck This Remake! Fuck This Remake! Just do an re-release that is remastered of these classics. What's next? Star Wars? Then there's Goodfellas, yeah lets remake Goodfellas and don't forget the Godfather while we're at. Good lord that films been out long enough that it's time for a remake. But who will play the Don? How about Alan Thicke? Yeah he'd be a good choice.

I know it's a bit harsh, but the liberals who re-wrote this script deserve it, especially Merrick for liking it. Gerald Butler just lost all Conservative credit with me from 300. The original script was Libertarian in philosophy. These douche bags made it part of the "Bush/Conservative Derangement Syndrome" liberal doctrine. Oh, the humanity. They even throw in "global warming". GLOBAL DOESN'T EXIST WARMING. Wow. I'm just beside myself.

I mean, this is a cult property. This script sounds like Waterworld, which tried to remake Mad Max with the budget of Titanic, only there was no way a post-apocalyptic bad ass story would ever have enough appeal to make back that kind of money. I doubt all this visual stuff with hundreds of extras will actually get approval. However it's sweet of these screenwriters to dream and aim big.

But every time you watch a movie or listen to an album released during his reign you'll be reminded of him and all the artists who tried to cash in on anti-Bush sentiment!

Also, the rest of the world loves Snake Plisken and wants a movie we can relate to about simple internationally relatable badassedness. I didn't vote for Bush. He's not my president. My country's army isn't in Iraq. I don't give a fuck! Leave this shit to George Clooney so I know not to see it. Waterworld had a lot more problems than being post apocalyptic. Kevin Costner trying to be Mel Gibson was one of them. The other was a much weaker script and director than The Road Warrior. If the movie had been better (and more original instead of a ripoff) I'm sure it would have been more popular also.

Waterworld was a crappy movie. As a fan of post-apocalyptic badass movies such as Mad Max and The Omega Man, I was in what these suits call "the target demographic" and still thought it was crappy. But you have to agree with me that movies like Mad Max, 12 Monkeys, The Omega Man are never going to have the huge mainstream appeal of generic action movies about cops and terrorists or whatever. They may turn profit, and I'll keep loving them, but the suits know not to splash out for huge sets and FX like suggested in this script because they know films in this genre will rarely do that well. I just hope that they go for quality over quantity and if they can't afford to do all these scenes well, then cut them instead of springing for cheapy CG.

And yeah Memories, I liked the original EFNY but did always want to see more of this interesting world. And for me also, this film could go either way. I realize a lot of the talkbackers on here hold this film sacred, and that's fine, but I guess seeing as I have frequently imagined other parts of this future it will be interesting to see somebody else approach this materiel. But this fucking bullshit about disillusionment over Middle East conflicts has got to fucking go! It'll be dated by next week. Might as well throw in some Bill Clinton blowjob jokes and a Judge Ito reference while you're at it. Sheesh.

If the studio is so hell-bent on a movie about a down and out NYC living in anarchy, why not a new property? There is a wonderful comic book by Brian Wood called "DMZ" that takes place during a modern US Civil War where both sides of the conflict are sitting on opposite sides of Manhattan Island. People stuck in the middle and all of that. It has great action, great political commentary and potential for a franchise, if a studio is looking for it. Dang. Get Spike to direct it and we are off and running. The bastards. Leave EFNY alone.

No mention of music, would'nt be EFNY is they did'nt use Carpenter/Howarth's theme and refer to some of that great synth music and go for that desolate analogue vibe of the original score. The jacked up scale, scenario tweaks sound impressive, time will tell if it all lives up to the hyperbole. I'm still finding it hard to hear Butler rasping like Kurt Russel doing Clint, I don't think he can sound like anything other than a Scotsman! His broague fit 300, but it's tough act to fill Russel's shoes (they should'nt deviate from his 'don't give a fuck' nihilism and terse attitude to 'da man'). I'm excited, but I still have reservations, we've been down this Carpenter remake road before with some pretty lack lustre results (inspite of similar pre-prod evangelism and vows of reverence to the core source material). As for the likes of Miller and Verhoven helming, that would instill a shitload more confidence amongst many of the geek brethren, good call there Merrick.

Yeah well that subgenre is a bit like horror movies in the way that it has a narrow but faithful audience. Although just like horror movies, if there's one made that is really, really good and has a wide appeal it could still sell. It's happened before with space movies and fantasy movies. But anyway, post apocalyptics tend to be better on a lower budget because without large sweeping crane shots and CGI they look more real.

Nope, not even close. The '51 version is a character-driven melodrama (other variables: significant female role, zip f/x). The Carpenter translation is modern Grand Guignol, an abstract nightmare. The only thing both films have in common is the source material ("Who Goes There?"). By the way, George Clooney--approx. 8 years ago--proposed a "live" TV drama based on the same story. Apparently, he copped out.

The bleak dystopian future has become a cliche'. EFNY should be NOW- an alternate timeline. Soviet Union struggled on to the late 1990s supporting Middle East dictatorships or whatever, no Gulf War, but WW3 with limited Nuclear Exchange in 1997 or so. Revolution and civil war in Soviet Union cause collapse of communist regime, US invades thats why Snake was in Leningrad and Siberia. Pyrrhic victory for USA because missles did hit US in the limited nuclear war causing anarchy among the populace, major cities are walled off and turned into prisons. The present day is no golden age of mankind but Snake Plissken's alternate universe is really fucked up!

I'm fascinated to see how this one turns out. The story itself is ripe for remaking, and it seems like there's all sorts of great potential there. It's a bit of shame to hear they're being so slavish to the original, though. That's been done, and done well, so why not try something different?

I have two big reservations about how well this one does. One is that Kurt Russell's shoes are going to be very hard to fill. He owns that role, and taking it over is going to be like taking over Indiana Jones or The Dude or Dirty Harry. The other is that is hate backstory, and it sounds from this review that they're going to throw a bunch of that in.

I still have my fingers crossed, though. Like I say, it has potential. Mind you, isn't that Neal H Moritz guy involved? That doesn't bode well.

Anachronistic Historical Details = Teh Suck!
by DirkBelig
Jul 2nd, 2007
02:19:13 PM
Haven't filmmakers learned that trying to comment on the political landscape at the time of their film's making gives it the shelf life of milk on a warm window sill?!? Can't they look at the hash "V For Vapidity" was by the time the Wahackski Bros were done shoehorning in anti-Bush allegories? Can't they just stick with the story or come up with a non-specific bogeyman or is expecting creativity from the supposed creators too much to hope for?

Whenever I see a ham-handed attempt to cram some anachronistic commentary into a film, all I can do is flashback to "2010" which was totally weighed down by circa 1984 Cold War-era Hollyweird paranoia that Evil AmeriKKKa was going to pester those nice folks in the Soviet Union into a war over Central America. The whole film was premised on the idea that the world of 1984 was going to be totally unchanged a quarter-century later. Too bad that the Berlin Wall fell five years later and the Warsaw Pact shortly thereafter.

If you want to see brilliant and prescient screenwriting in action, go and watch "Network". Awesome in its own time, in the Eighties it was just as relevant by substituting "Japanese" for "Arabs" and today it's current as written. The uprising against the recent Dubai Ports deal and the shamnesty proposal last week mirrors the scene in "Network" in which Howard Beale gets his viewers to send telegrams to the White House.

Maybe something good can come of this......

I think he's the director whose films have had the most remakes- halloween, the fog, assault on precinct 13, escape from new york and also the thing. This just proves he was such a great creator. the fog was rubbish tho but even so producers may think 'hang on...' and give him a second chance- he deserves it. Also non fans may go back to his earlier stuff and think 'fuck me, carpenter was a great director'.

Sounds a lot better at this stage than I expected. There's only one little thing... Merrick, you mentioned how they're so far planning to augment stuff from the original and you used the "you now have the option to terminate" announcement from the original as an example indicating there's a scene in the new version where we actually see the 'option'. Well, that could end up just as dorky as it could end up cool. Escape From L.A. used a similar idea showing prisoners/undesirables being given the chair and it was done (as was the rest of the movie) in a most uncool and silly way. (I believe as you do, Carpenter's older films are the creme de la creme--the later stuff is a mixed bag of, unfortunately, mostly crap de la crap.) I absolutely LOVE the original EFNY. It's one of my top ten fav's of all time. If there's to be a remake, I can only hope and pray it's done as you say the script at this point is...respectful and cool as hell.

I am so sick and tired of genre movies shoving the stupid leftist hollywierd world view down our throats over and over again. Why can't they resist the temptation to piss off 65% of the viewing audience who might not agree with their fruitcake, wussy world view? Enough already.

Why don't they just nuke NY city in the first act, and then... they have to go and send in a terminator with Pliskeen's skin atached to the metal body in a 70's fashion, And then kill a bunch of predators, and rescue some little girl that actually is a little predator in disguise. That would rule!
