It's cool if you have read those scripts and have decided not to share the details on your website that is famous for scooping early details on films in development, but must you tell people about it? You have become like a twelve year old girl who skips around, flicking at her pigtails, singsonging "I know something you don't know".

Nobody ever wanted to fuck those girls, Harry. They became old and bitter and mean-spirited. Don't be like that. Either share or keep it fully under your hat.

spoiler...well refers to the part in the comic where Rorschach finds out a kidnapper fed a little girl to his dogs so he decides to go jigsaw on his ass and handcuffs the murderer to a furnace inside his house while he lites it aflame. He stands outside to see if the guy uses the saw he left him to cut off his own arm and escape, which he doesn't. Supposed to be his origin story.

you know it makes sense-what doesnt make sense is making a Watchmen film-there is absoloutely no point to it. The books a good time piece-to adapt it all this time after the Cold War without adding some element of retrospect or re-evaluation of the material serves absolutley no purpose beyond the fact that its a big comic book and adaptations of big comics make money no mater how shite they are. The books there-READ IT!

She said that the current line up is Crudup for Manhattan. Patrick Wilson for Nite Owl.And... Jackie Earle Haley for Rorschach. Good stuff, straight from the horse's mouth. All other parts still up for grabs. Apparently JEH produced his own short as an audition, had stuntmen fight him and everything. That is commitment! Be a great DVD extra as well. I doubt anyone who has just read 250 posts into a TalkBack about a comic book that is over 20 years old needs to be warned about plot spoilers. And why does every Watchmen TB devolve into a guessing game about the cast? I'm more concerned that the script remain true to the characters and their stories. And more than a little worried whether they can do this faithfully and not have it seem woefully dated.

I read the Hayter script which Alex Tse is now doing a re-write on. I thought the Hayter script was excellent. Very faithful in tone and spirit - with whole sections lifted more or less verbatim. Most of the liberties were used in streamlining: No Capt Metropolis (instead Nite Owl comes up with the idea of a team up - but even then Comedian refers to it having been tried before...)and no Black Freighter. The biggest change is the ending. Instead of the fake alien attack, Adrian makes it seem that Dr Manhattan punishes the world for risking nuclear annihilation by replicating his power (by trapping him during the big stand off at his polar base) and using it to wipe out 15 million people across various key cities across the world-showing no political or idealogical bias in his targets. The whole sky turns Manhattan Blue and he speaks to the world in all languages and tells them to behave themselves. He basically appears to become god. I thought it was a fantastic change. And it fits really well with Adrian original plan, what with the cancer hoax and getting Doc to leave the planet. It makes it seem that he was manipulating him towards this climax all along. I (and I am a massive fan of the book) kind of prefer it. Esp Adrian's (posing as the voice of Manhattan) sign off after his threat to the world: "I'll Be Watching". I mean, that's just perfect. So the essential structure from the book is maintained, along with the final pay off with Rorschach's journal. As far as I know, Tse is just adding more of the book's details, and better explaing the denouement (the Hayter script didn't spell everything out-something I loiked it for), but as far as I can tell the are still using a Hayter style ending.

I had a feeling the fake alien would NOT translate to film, but I feared they couldn't come up with a substitute that didn't seem just as, well, "hokey." The book also has too many characters for a film audience to keep track of, so I can accept some degree of compositing of characters. The best suggestions I've seen concerning the Black Freighter material involve making it into a TV series that's playing in the background of several scenes. If done this way, it could be be a nod to fans of the book without detracting from the main storyline. Although it turns out to be quite important as a reflection of Veidt's story arc, I could see a scriptwriter wanting to lose it. I'm feeling better and better about this project all the time. Here's hoping something fantastic happens.

It says the “Veidt Method” is a lie.

What is the “Veidt Method” you say?

An Alan Moore scholar tells us so...

"Adrian Veidt, the superhero Ozymandias, advertises what he calls “Veidt Method”: a self-improvement course, which includes:

[S]eries of physical and intellectual exercise systems which, if followed correctly, can turn YOU into a superhuman, fully in charge of your own destiny. All that is required is the desire for perfection and the will to achieve it.

... this advertisement is a direct pastiche of the Charles Atlas’ advertisements that ran in the comic books in the 1950s, urging “90 pound weaklings” that got picked on at the beach by the bigger boys to send money to Atlas for a “subscription to his life changing self-improvement course”"

Who watches the Watchmen? 1. Hardly anybody. 2. Fewer than you thought. 3. Um, a couple-dozen-thousand geeks opening weekend is all. 4. About as many as watched that Vendetta dude.

Answer: All of the above.

I have taken my first steps into a larger world.

Ned, I totally agree with you about how to do the Freighter. Just have it there as a subtle reflection on events.

mode_7, I do agree that is legit flaw. I think it is a tricky one, but it could be overcome by an excellent performance to a degree.

The new script does seem to flesh him out more, but the only bit I have of that is his confrontation with R and NO at the polar base.

I just think it's a hard thing to translate because he is something of an ancillary character until the big reveal. The only way to fix it is to reveal his whole story (the spirit quest etc) but that might give the game away a bit: "why are they giving me all this info on a character who just seems to just be a semi-retired rich guy with a big brain and a utopian fixation... waitaminute!". Y'know.

A really well considered performance could sell the book's Adrian through what's in the screenplay, I think.

The thing is, if anything the scripts made it pretty clear that a faithfull adaptation is a possibility. Why change it? If Moore wanted space lasers thats what he would have written in the first place. I know a lot of people think the alien can't work on film but I just don't agree. The first time I read the book I found the alien kind of cheesy but the more I thought about it the more I realised it really couldn't work as well any other way. Take out the alien and you lose a lot of the subtext. Watchmen is not only a superhero comic but also a book about superhero comics, I think that the fact that the alien is cheesy is half the point.

I know what you mean. I think the Manhattan change does serve two purposes though. 1. It makes all the stakes more personal to the established characters. Jon is seen as the key to the US's authority, having him (appear to) turn on his masters and humanity at large is a nice progression. 2. Because the threat is now more dispersed (instead of East vs West, there is now a Kashmir/India/Iran/US/Etc nuclear stand off), an entity that can attack across all borders at once better sells the reason for an end to hostilities.

But you are right, there is something purposefully hokey about the botched alien invasion. However, I got shivers at at that whole "I'll be watching" thing. Brings the whole "what do we want from our heroes/leaders/gods" into stark relief. Seriously, 15 million dead and a big voice in the sky saying "Behave" would get even a staunch atheist like me watching my p's and q's...

I'm still scepticle but feel a little less worried than I did before. By the way which draft of the Haytor script did you read? I have the third draft of the Haytor script and the Alex Tse draft. A lot of the stuff you have mentioned isn't in the Haytor draft I have access to so I assumed they were changes made by Tse.

For example in the Haytor draft I have, Viedt only uses the weapon on North America and without the faked message from Manhatton which would be a really bad idea for obvious reasons. I was kind of pissed of with Moriarty for missing such an obvious flaw in logic when I read his review of the Haytor script but now i'm thinking maybe he reviewed a later draft.

Tom Cruise is tied up with Valkyrie I guess. I don't see law at all. He's too sinister. It would give the game away. Plus, he is kind of a whelp. Veidt should actually look like a comic book superhero. I'm biased in whom I'd like to get the part. There's a reason I met the Casting director...

I think probably my favourite idea for Viedt so far (other than Cruise) would be Val Kilmer, just the right combination of superhero looks and smug superiority. I can just imagine the guys face when Viedt catches that bullet.

The Tse script is a definate improvement over the Haytor draft I read but I suppose I'm not really in a position to compare since I only had an early Haytor draft. Tse does go to greater lenghs to explain things but also crams in a few more of the books finer details as you have said. This may all be kind of academic anyway since Snyder said that he is not using either script but rather using both as a basis for a new one so who knows?

So who would you like to get the part? And why are you biased? and why did you meet the casting director? So much Intrigue...

I'm just a working actor with a great agent. But it's great that they are seeing people like me and not just going after a star. However, in all likiehood the role will go to someone much better known than me. Which is natural and the way of the industry. But still, just to be considered for this kind of dream job stuff is exciting and kind of a validation of the many sacrifices you have to make to try and build a career doing this stuff. I think you might be in with a pretty good chance. It seems to me that snyder will will be gunning for whoever the best man for the part is. I know usualy a character as intergral to the story as Ozy would probably go to a big name due to the studio needing big actors to sell the film. But in this case as you say, Viedt would have to be somewhat of an ancillary character so as not to give the game away. Also I suppose, Snyder has a louder voice with the suits thanks to the success of 300, so he may not get pushed as hard to bring the big names in.

The Internet is a fantastic home for a marketing campaign for a story that takes place in 1985. They need to go old-school for this. WB should vandalize subways with phrases like "Quis custodiet ipsos custodes?", "The Comedian is Dead", "Remember Kitty", "Manhattan is the Most Dangerous Man Alive", etc. I want to see yellow smiley faces with a spot of blood over the eye on the side of buildings. I want to see ads for Nostalgia perfume in People and Time. Wizard and Entertainment Weekly need to interview Adrian Veidt. DC and WB could even team up to publish a few issues of "The New Frontiersman", or even get someone to ghost-write "Under the Hood" and publish it. Newsweek could publish an article about the Keene Act. Make it seem like we're a part of their world, as opposed to them being a part of our world (as with the Internet). I want to be inundated with this stuff. I want to get lost in it, and I want people to be confused and intrigued. I want people to watch the film if they do the story justice, and I just don't feel Internet marketing is the best way to go for it.

When asked about the nature of Rorschach's Journal, Michael Regina (Editor-in-Chief of theonering.net, which is behind R's J) wouldn't confirm if it was an official viral marketing site or just some fan fun, instead giving us the cryptic: "Not sure, [Rorschach] just arrived one day asking for help setting up a website." That's a pretty funny image. Correspondence is continuing, we'll keep you posted if anything develops. Also, the new Morse Code message on the site reads: "SAW GREBERID AND YZJEPCSKU 40.754950073.988058 AN AFFAIR PERHAPS" I don't have my copy of Watchmen in front of me, but does anyone know what the heck those numbers mean? UPDATE from AHR: Thanks to Geekanerd commenters Dan and Anonymous for pointing out these numbers are in fact co-ordinates that lead to a location on 7th Ave ad 40th street, NYC. Although I originally speculated they were pointing to Midtown Comics, Geekanerd's super-secret contact at Midtown (who also happens to be a shadowy figure behind Pop Culture Shock) said that the co-ordinates are more likely referring to the location of The Gunga Diner, a restaurant Rorschach visits in Chapter 5, page 11. On that page, Rorschach's narration reads: "On fortieth and seventh, saw Dreiberg and Juspeczyk leaving diner. They didn't know me. An affair perhaps?"
