I hope we don't have "Another Night At The Museum" on our hands here. I really do hope for the best for Jason Bateman and am glad he's getting all kinds of roles nowadays. Strange because when I was a kid and he was on "The Harper Family"/"Valerie" I fuckin' hated him. Someone should make "The Keatons Vs. The Harpers".

I love Portman and Hoffman, but this looks like the second coming of Barry Levinson's bomb Toys. Which is not a good thing. Could Hoffman possibly be as annoying as Robin Williams? I'm not paying to find out unless I hear this is brilliant from about 10 different sources.

Non-Fan Bay Was Schooled In "Transformers" Nostalgia Posted by RT-News on Thursday, Jun. 28, 2007, 02:33 PM Ftopel writes: "Michael Bay kind of resented the "Transformers" toys at first. They made him go to Transformers School at Hasbro before he took on the project. Going through that experience actually made more of a "Transformers" fan out of him. Transformers (2007) • Posters • News • About • Forum "I thought I was going to learn how to fold up robots, but I met with the CEO and I went through the whole Transformer lore," said Bay. "I've been offered a lot of superhero movies before and nothing's really appealed to me and in the room, because I've been such a fan of Japanese anime, it just hit me that if I make this really real it could be something very new and different." Learning about the fanfare as an adult might have helped Bay make a "Transformers" movie to please all crowds. "I quickly became probably one of the bigger Transformer fans in the world, and I tried to make this movie for non Transformer fans. I wanted it to be a little bit more, if you could say, adult, so I'm sure I'm going to get flack for 'You made an edgy movie on a toy, how is that going to affect kids?'" Click for more pics from the "Transformers" gallery "I know there are Transformers fans that are 40 years old," Bay continued. "I actually think that because I wasn't a fan I think makes it more accessible to other people. Megatron was a gun, and I'm like, 'I don't get that.'" Bay did have enough nostalgia for his own career that he allowed an extra to make a reference to his own ouvre. During the chaos in one scene, a young boy shouts, "This is way cooler than Armageddon." "That's just me -- I'm like, 'Okay, this kid is so funny.' I'm like, 'Dude, you've got say this.' He's just funny. I'll often add jokes along the way. A perfect example, because I will always hire actors that have a good improv skills, like Nic Cage in The Rock, there was really nothing funny in The Rock script. That was all through improv, just trying to work with the guys and try to make it funny." Queue up in line now -- "Transformers" comes to a megaplex near you next Tuesday, July 3."

Alright, that's a pretty great score. Looks legit because if it was fake it would probably be much better quality. Maybe the effect in the theatre is different, but that's IT? They could have shot that in someone's trailer. Hey, throw a bunch of cards on this table and then we'll get Ledger to put some voiceover down. I know it's a teaser, but no Batman? None? Aren't they like halfway through filming this shit? If not, then wait a month. Are people this starved for a glimpse? The Harvey Dent website was cool but if this is all we're going to see until next spring it's pretty weak.

by CreasyBear
Jun 29th, 2007

no real kid would ever buy, i.e., toys from the early 1900's. Kids want movie-tie-ins, not a wooden duck on a string. The movies try to be quaint, and I have to admit, it is preferable to a cross-promotional, product-placement extravaganza with more marketing per square inch than a NASCAR race, which is what it would be if they ever showed anything resembling an actual toy store. (Then again, that wouldn't be a magical emporium.)

The problem I have with this title is that I always want to say "Marge-orium". And Natalie Portman, imo, has become a bad actress. She didn't start off that way but now she really overdoes it. Or it could just be the more whimsical stuff she has a problem with because she was okay in Closer.

Seriously. Stranger Than Fiction was, I thought, pretty awesome, and this is the same writer, in his directorial debut. Did the AICN masses hate Stranger Than Fiction, or am I in a bizarre world where we're not film coneisseurs, and thus only the trailer, not the filmmakers matter?

You couldn't be more right if you tried, Doob. One of the things that gets me about movies like this is that they bleed and sweat in order to be whimsical, which is basically the opposite of how real "movie magic" happens, and in trying so hard it's a miserable failure. Plus, the toys really are the sort no child EVER, EVER, EVER would want on his own. These are the toys that sit unloved in the back room of POTTER BARN KIDS until some "whimsical" corporate mandate throws them out onto the shelves right before Christmas so parents who've abandoned all hope will buy them because they've got some idea in their heads it'll rekindle that sense of popcorn-and-cranberry Christmases they never had but saw on Hallmark Cards given to other people by their parents. They think that, by some vicarious resonance, the kids will fall in love with the toys they never bothered to play with themselves and in so doing will abandon QUAKE VII: BLOODWRATH (Gold Edition!). Fat chance.
And Another Thing...

I also hate movies where it is suggested that kids' lives are all about fun and games, plush teddy bears and fish mobiles and dinosaurs. The best movies for kids are the ones that remind us that being a kid was a wonderful time and also a scary time. The best kid movies are the ones that aren't afraid to be a little dangerous and take risks, to show that it's not always a joy to be a kid. The whole "wonder of childhood" "taught again to cold adults" is a movie myth as any other. ZATHURA is a perfect example of a kid's movie done right, and there was more wonder in five seconds of that flick than there will probably be in all two hours of this "film."

I'm not saying the trailer gave me goosebumps, but honestly, it looks promising for what it is.

and I liked that movie quite a bit. This film is his directorial debut. The script was supposedly quite the hot property. The trailer doesn't wow me but I'll give this movie a chance.

Hate to correct you, guy, but the song at the end of the trailer is "Magic", the one hit by the mid-70's group Pilot. Personally I think they sound more like Supertramp or Sweet or Argent... But all them 70s groups sound the same after a while. And while we're debating the validity of the Dark Knight teaser, why is it you guys can suspend your disbelief when a story concerns a vigilante industrial playboy but give nothing but grief to a family movie about an enchanted toy store? It may be arguing oranges and lemons, but am I the only one who has enough room in his heart for both? I also don't buy that it's just a rip off of "Toys". Nothing I've read about this movie hints at the heavy moralising that sunk Levinson's film (war is bad, mmkay?). Yeah, it's damn near impossible to do the whimsical inventor/man-child thing without invoking Dahl and Suess, but doesn't trying to take a new spin on that archetype beat cheaply "updating" the source material with hip hop slang and fart jokes? I'm looking at you, "Cat in the Hat". Anyway, my point is "Stranger Than Fiction" looked like interesting but one-note premise from the trailer, but wound up being one of my favorite films last year. I'm willing to see what Zack Helms is capable of as a director. Now to break out my copy of "Out of the Blue"...
