When I saw it with Planet Terror, I thought that Death Proof had some potential but knew there was something holding it back. Now, I know what that was: not enough sitting around-time with the characters, where they talk about their day, sex, and previous adventures! Surely the film will be well served by another 20 minutes of exposition!

Sure, "Death Proof" may not have fit the rugged "Grindhouse" ideal, but it was the better movie. It fit with scopofiliac/voyeur movies like "Psycho" and "Peeping Tom", which I love. I can't wait for the extended version his the U.S... It comes out on DVD on 9/18, I think. September couldn't come soon enough.

When it's good buddy Eli Roth involved, they refuse to run reviews that dealt with the workprint that was all over the net. Now this guy is comparing the new Death Proof with the version of Grindhouse he admits having watched ON THE INTERNET, and they have no problem running the item.

Would it have run if it was Harry buddy Rodriguez's Planet Terror half instead? Doubt it. Hypocritical bastards.

P.S. It's HILARIOUS that Roth is blaming his flick's complete bombing on the internet. No, Eli, it's cuz your flick sucked and was a giant disappointment.

Eli Roth has blamed everyone--exempting himself--for the failure of HOSTEL 2. He'd have to pay me to screen even pirated copies of his derivative crap. He was pretty shameless on his blog, begging "fans" to view repeated screenings of HOSTEL 2 (i.e. pay to see it twice!!). Last time I recount this story: on the heels of CABIN FEVER (talk about derivative--thank God for Jordan Ladd and Cerina Vincent), Roth was invited to join a panel of veteran filmmakers (Stuart Gordon, Wes Craven, Tobe Hooper, et al); sure enough, he promptly showboated, eclisping the participation of the experienced directors (who just camouflaged their disgust behind "What an asshole!" grins). Happily, Roth is not indelibly linked to "Cell" (give it to Neil Marshall, for God's sake). As for GRINDHOUSE--actually, I prefer the authentic grindhouse movies that were ground-out with nickel 'n' dime budgets and a lot of creativity (HUMANOIDS FROM THE DEEP, THE HOWLING, NIGHT OF THE DEMONS, et al).
To be completely truthful...

The failure of Hostel 2 can be blamed (ever so slightly) on the workprint leaking onto the internet. If it hadn't, then a few people wouldn't have seen it, known it was crap, and used word-of-mouth to spread that fact around the internet. If the workprint hadn't leaked, it would have had a successful opening weekend and then taken a 70% dive the following weekend. As for Death Proof...it sucked. An extra half-an-hour isn't going to help it.

WTF? If someone didn't like Grindhouse that means they're a rust belt hick with no taste in movies? Who's Kool-Aid are you drinking? Is there no room for a difference of opinion? I saw Grindhouse opening weekend and didn't like it. I saw what they were trying to do, I just didn't think they did it very effectively. In hindsight there probably wasn't any way they could do it effectively. Whenever a filmmaker tries to mimic a genre that's extinct, it will probably always come off like a cheap knock-off. So in your universe that means I automatically like Tim Allen movies? (well, I actually do like Galaxy Quest but that's it)

Tuff (lol) female characters that talk shit for over 30 mins when they think theyre being clever is not grindhouse- its kevin smith on a bad day (which is very, very bad). The trailers represented grindhouse better (esp eli roths thanksgiving- too bad his films arent as good) and that was tarantinos least involvement. First half was alright but still way over written. Thanksgiving worked cause it made you feel sick as fuck while still making you laff and managed to do what grindhouse is notorious for- putting you off food especially meat- in this case turkey. And i am FUCKING PISSED that i cant watch this on the big screen with a group full of unsuspecting plebs. If you want a REAL decent parody/tribute of crude but warped horror watch cult british comedy garth merenghis' dark place on dvd. I promise you'll laff til you squirt milk.

Flashback to October, '06: Tarantino and Rodriguez were basking in the adulation of the phony Scream Awards ("Winner of grossest scene in a movie is--" Class act, huh?). The audience roared as clips were cued from GRINDHOUSE. Tarantino smugly smiled while Rodrigues proclaimed, "Fuck the Oscars. The Scream Awards rule." The audience went wild. Tarantino's smug grin broadened. Cut to the GRINDHOUSE premiere (a couple of months ago). Empty seats. Who's smiling now? Tarantino thought his movie would be a certified blockbuster. Not a banner year for the Weinstein Company (HANNIBAL RISING also tanked). I really agree with BobbyQuickdraw's abridged summary of Tarantino's work (and please, Quentin, stop your egocentric schtick, i.e. appearing in your own movies. When you performed "Wait Until Dark" on Broadway, critics cut you a new asshole. Your DUSK/DAWN character is the most annoying presence since post-juvenile Urkel. I mean, you negotiated a GRINDHOUSE action figure of yourself for the toy market??? Why?--the role was so damn insignificant). Worst sin: JACKIE BROWN (have you really really screened AIP's blaxploitation pix?). Second worst sin: the incongruity of GRINDHOUSE. $70 million? The best grindhouse films were cranked-out for less than $100,000.

This is the 2nd time they've done this. I'm not condoning piracy or nuttin' but fucking hell. And anyways , these films will prob do worse at the popcorn office as the quality of them isn't good enough for 2 separate releases. The original release seemed like a good value package and for them to think separating them is the answer is just fucking retarded. Its not as tho we're living in the age of heavens gate anymore- 3 hour plus films from what i know actually do pretty well. The remakes and the appearance of colin farrell is what they need to monitor.

THAT'S your defense for DEATH PROOF? I quote you:

"It (Planet Terror) set too different a tone from Tarantino's film, which is why so many supposed Tarantino fans thought it was "boring"...

Uh, sorry, Osmosis. You're entitled to your own opinion of course, but just because the two films were put together has NOTHING to do with why I thought DP was utter pig vomit. DP was boring because it WAS as boring as watching paint dry. It was dull, dragged out, and contained Tarantino's most self-indulgent dialogue EVER, not to mention it centered on truly unlikable female characters that you were actually hoping Kurt Russell WOULD kill simply to put you out of the misery of hearing them drone on any longer.

Not to mention the other obvious logic hole in your defense: namely, the whole POINT of recreating a "grindhouse experience" WAS to put two films together. So if you're saying the reason people don't like DP is simply because they don't work as companion films, then that only proves how much Tarantino dropped the ball even MORE by failing to create a film that was actually worthy of the whole marketing stunt.

But, hey, if you liked it, that's cool. In the spirit of being polite, to each his own and all that!

How am I supposed to watch a movie with talking in it? I don't have the attention for all that. --- The DP because of its set up scenes is getting real old. You thought the dialouge in DP was boring, but you aren't bored yet of talking about the talking??? I'm guessing the people complaining about the length of time with "nothing" happening either A) aren't familiar with grindhouse films or B) they don't like most of them. A lot of the movies Tarantino was emulating were the types that had trouble filling feature length run time and/or only had the budget for a couple action scenes. I appreciated the trying to find pot, diner scene, and all that, because those old movies are full of development and filler like that AND they were never with writing as entertaining as QT's. And DP had GREAT ACTION! GREAT GORE EFFECTS! GREAT CAR CRASHES! AND REAL STUNTS! I liked both, but I have a much different appreciation of Rose CG grenade boosting 20 feet in the air than I do the car stunts. Real stunts are so refreshing. The "BORING" crowd might prefer some moviestar in some action scene evading CGI perrils, but I've always loved real world stunts. The flag shipping or whatever scene in DP was great. But I guess if you were frsutrated by then you may not have recognized how cool that actually is. I know a lot of people's attention span was probably worn thin by then, the pace change to setting up DP came after 90 minutes or so quick moving action/horror/comedy and I too think that had a big effects on impaitent people in the audiences' review of DP.

Over here in the UK they decided purely on the basis of Tarantinos name to release Death Proof and ignore Planet Terror!?! I am a big Tarantino fan (liking all his previous stuff) but have to agree that this is his worse film. Only Kurt Russell, and the cool cars and stunt work made it watchable. Too much smart-ass talk, awful female characters, except Rosie. Crap pacing. Planet Terror however was fantastic. Great score, acting, characters, story. Cool as fuck!! Now this is what should be released in England!!

I'm all for long dialog scenes BUT, I want to hang out with characters I enjoy, not some obnoxious smart-assed idiots that you want to see ground under the Kurt Russell's Tires. The scene with Pam and Kurt and when he kills her in the car, that all worked as you cared for Pam and felt for her plight..
THE "GERMAN" VERSION SUCKS SO HARD ...
by Hank Hawk
Jul 19th, 2007
04:41:24 PM
I have trouble to describe it in English because I'm really pissed. It is the 19th of July and I just saw DEATH PROOF and I still can't belive how dull this film is. This is not GRINDHOUSE but SNOOZEHOUSE - at its best. I swear to God, this is the first movie, I thought about recutting my own Hank - version, when it's out on DVD. Seriously, every fucking detail this dude praised above in his review is making this movie so damn slow and booooooring, it's beyond belief. Imagine we saw a twenty minutes exposition on JAWS first victim Chrissy where she is fighting with her boyfriend while they where buying beer for the evening at the beach. Do I want to see that? NO!! Because I want to see her get eaten by a huge shark. But that is what we get here in this "single version". I absolute don't care about those bitches and after two minutes listening about her absolute sensefree (is this an actual english word?) dialouge I can't wait till they got what they deserve. But when I don't care about those characters (which are in peril, because a lunatic killer-stuntman is after them) WHAT'S THE FUCKING POINT?! Then, after the first group of girls where FINALY killed (Yeyyy!!) We get to know the new bunch of girls. Again endless and total empty girl talk about who is fucking who. It goes on an on and adds absolute nothing to the development of those characters. NONE WHAT'S SO EVER! This was the first time I went to the bathroom not so much I had to pee, but because I was so bored. No shit. I went during the diner scene an was away for about five minutes. I hoped when i got back, I skiped this awful long scene, but NOOOOOOOOO! They went on and on. So I saw two absolute brilliant action sequences (Zoe Bell rocks). That's about 20 percent of the film. The rest 80 percent was totally dull girl talk which has nothing to do with GRINDHOUSE at all. I watched those movies in the 70s and I know one thing, even when they sucked, they where never so dull like this (version). So I'm very pleased to read, that the original theater version is shorter. THANK GOD for that. Grindhouse productions where cheap and fast. Corman would never wasted so much film and money with character expositions that had absolute no value for the rest of the film. This is the first time I'm looking forward to watching a shorter version of a Tarantino film. Who thought this day will come?
