I was just talking to a friend the other day about movies, especially "family" movies, that were made in the 80s that could never get made today. Or even if they did, they'd be heavily toned down or Rated R. Monster Squad was one of them, 13 year old kids smoking, using guns ("Bang." "Where'm I gonna get silver bullets, K-Mart?"), and what not. Goonies was another. The thing is, no one seemed to think back then that pre-teens were incapable of dealing with adult themes seriously and in the right context without them being watered down all to hell and served with a side of sugar frosting. Just goes to show how hardcore the MPAA's gotten in recent years.

... that's the reason for the goofy music and bad John Hurt impersonator doing the voiceover. This movie is good enough to stand on it's own. Why are they trying to backpack onto a fantasy series that has NOTHING to do with the kind of material in Monster Squad. God... movie studies really have no clue. They suck!

I just e-mailed this info to AICN last night, so it may not have been read yet. There's a screening at 3PM at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica. The official Aero schedule isn't up yet, but you can already buy tickets at http://www.fandango.com/americ ancinemathequeattheaerotheatre _aacpd/theaterpage?date=7/22/2 007. According to the American Cinematheque Myspace page, Fred Dekker and others will be there. I'm guessing this will sell out pretty fast.

This movie sucked. Polished nostalgia at it's finest. You know how I know it sucked? Because 1) It's just NOW coming out on DVD, 2) I didn't like this movie when I was 11. Now, Fantastic Four: ROTSS I would have liked at 11. Hell, I liked it at 32.

for Monster Squad when I was like 11. I even had the trailer for it planned out. Then I hit puberty, and began playing with my dick. Needless to say, the idea never came to fruition. But, that's neither here nor there. Monster Squad's comin' out!!!! YAY!!!!!
The guy who edited the trailer is 100 percent a fan
by renderboy

I know, because he and I saw the original film in the theater when it came out. I did the VFX and animation for the trailer, and we spent HOURS talking about how it should look, what kind of lightning the box should have on it, etc. etc. etc... He even went through a lot of trial and error on the VO, and I can tell you, not once, ever, did the words "Harry Potter" get uttered. The thinking was to make the VO more like the feeling of the old Universal monsters, in that the characters often had a British accent, and usually a bad one, especially when they said the word "Monst-a". This guy has THOUSANDS of movies in his collection, and is an uber-geek of the highest magnitude when it comes to this stuff. Hell, he and I ran around with our Super 8 cameras and clunky video cameras making Sci-Fi and Horror movies all the time. I can tell you that he, and everyone involved with that trailer, wanted to make the best trailer possible.

not trying to be an ass here, its an honest question cuz i gotta say, i dont have much of a life so i watch a lot of tv and aside from new movies being released to dvd, i've never seen trailers for older releases. so why are trailers like this one made? is it only for the internet? i've seen a few "classic" moves get trailers for the dvd release but the only place i ever see or even hear about the trailer is online. so yeah, what's the target for these?
These are usually seen on DVD's of other movies...

...so if you buy or rent one that has this trailer on it, you might want to buy or rent the DVD when it comes out. Sometimes they are made to be seen only by the retail buyers for the video chains. There are a lot of different audiences for these trailers.

No it wasn't Tom Noonan, it was Ted Levine. Regarding Monster Squad, sorry to say that I saw this a month or so ago, and it really didn't stand up. Maybe because I wasn't a huge fan of it as a kid. It had moments that made me smile, but it had aged pretty badly. Seemed to want to go into adult territory but still keep itself grounded and safe for the kids, and as a result left itself floundering in a mixed up limbo.

Folks in the Los Angeles area, you absolutely need to see this film on the big screen...so much fun.

I remember seeing it when it came out, and I also got to see it with Fred Dekker, and some cast members, when TMS screened last year in San Jose (where I live now).

I even had Fred and the three attending cast members sign my TMS Press Kit (Phoebe has grown up into a great looking woman) yes, I own a The Monster Squad Press Kit...I know, I know...Cool!

Damn, I forgot how fun this movie was. I remember we couldn't go see this in the theater the weekend/week it first came out because my best friend's parents wouldn't allow him to see anything above a PG rating. Our parents didn't care. I think we went the next weekend or so. Had a helluva lot of fun with it back then too.

This movie is what Van Helsing wanted to be, before all the CGI got carried away and crapped on Universal's Icons. It's Fred Dekker's love letter to the past. And for those of you that didn't grow up watching all those old monsters on late night tv. Or staying up til 3am just to catch one of your favorite monsters on an oddball channel, that only came in when you held the rabbit ears of the tv high enough in the air! Then all you haters can never really appreciate what a truly heart felt look back, at some of the things that shaped Fred Dekker's imagination, that this film is. Finally! It's on DVD! And I can't wait!

...board game or 'I Vant to Suck Your Blood' board game that came out around the same time? Ahhhh, the memories... Though, the MS game was based on the ORIGINAL t.v. series. Frank N. Stein, Dracula, and Bruce W. Wolf fighting crime under the guidance of little Walter, the crime solving geek that some how could afford a computer during the 1970's...

"My name is Walt. I work as night watchman here at Fred's Wax Museum to put myself through criminology college. It used to be very lonely until recently when I plugged in my crime computer, suddenly oscillating vibrations brought to life three legendary monsters...Dracula, The Werewolf and Frankenstein. Creatures hated and feared for centuries, now determined to make up for their past misbehavings by fighting crime wherever they find it. Together, we're THE MONSTER SQUAD"

...this is one of those films that I always thought was incredibly over-rated back in the day, and even worse, hasn't fared at all well to the test of time, making them seem even lamerr now than they did then. Still, that said it's good to see it finally out on DVD for all the fans that want (and love) it though, and just like Goonies, I know it definitely does have it's fans, regardless of what I may happen to think of it (decent idea, somewhat lame execution). Somehow, I always get kind of a melancholy, sentimental feeling whenever we celebrate a film with a dead, semi-obscure, former child star. I hope they send him a copy in the netherworld. He can watch it with Frank if they have DVD players in that black hole he got sucked into...
