Actually, that's my sole interest in regard to this remake. Zombie is a hack (compared to Eli Roth, however, he's Orson Welles). Tranforming the Michael Myers character from an enigma to a rapist/sadist is the formulaic tract of all derivative horror movie (perhaps prompted by the misguided obsession for Zombie to throw his wife a role).

But I could give two shits about the flames on Optimus. Raped your childhood? Good god man - the fact that Hugo Weaving is Megatron is much more heinous. I mean, do you not recall in Transformers: The Movie when Hot Rod activated the Matrix... he was all flamed out. I see a precedence there that everyone seems to ignore.

Yeah in the original leaked script, Myers is just a big scary serial killer, who doesn't even do the impossible to kill bit, and actually 'dies' fairly easily, at least in slasher movie terms. That script was quite obviously written by a guy who has read a ton of 'true life crime' serial killer books, and was using them to paint his main character...

Just for Danielle Harris, god Ive had a crush on her for years. I know this film is just a crappy remake too and not something special,Zombie is no where near the God Carpenter is and never will be,Carpenter can even take a remake {the THING} and turn it into a master piece,if Zombie was smart he'd just stick to originals.

A good horror film isn't about the killer
by veritasses
Jun 20th, 2007
08:13:05 PM
so much as it is about the victim. We the audience should experience the film through the eyes of the victim and feel their fears and fright and sense of hopelessness and desperation. Start with a well defined, relate-able victim and then build up the suspense by slowly torturing their mind/emotions, not their bodies. Killing needs to be used strategically, not senselessly. More often then not, a good, well defined killer where we understand their motives for killing ruins the suspense. If we understand, for example, that something in his childhood motivates him to kill then we the audience end of forming some level of empathy making us think "eh, give the poor guy a break and let him spill some blood. He's had a rough childhood." Who needs that in a horror flick?

its intereting that in that clip of the siskel & ebert, you never see micheal get up and slowly approach her...micheal's just suddenly there while in the widescreen (I.E. original aspect) there's the suspense because we the audience see him but no one else does...i just think thats a good clip to maybe show people who are afraid of "black bars" the difference it makes.

Because whenever I watch that horrible movie and it comes to the part where Sonny is killed, I cannot help but think if only Eli Roth would remake this terrible film we would be able to see so much more blood in that scene. We would see huge holes being ripped into his body with gallons of blood flying out; we would see his fingers being blown off and the mile high jets of blood shooting from the stumps where his fingers used to be; we would see a slow motion close up of a bullet going into Sonny's left eye, complete with white goo exploding from the socket; we would see his crotch explode in a cloud of red and see his penis (or bits of it) fly into the air; and for the final touch, we would see the final bullet hit him in the head, making the back of his skull explode and his brains spraying every which way. And you know what? That alone would make that crapfest that Coppola made so much better. Because as we all know, gore makes for a good movie. Not suspense, not atmosphere, not tension, just gore.

Are you telling me that there is even ONE person here that thinks ANY of the Halloween films since 2 are anything but terrible? The only one that came close was H20, and that was ruined by a poorly-thought out plot and an pointless appearance by LL Cool J as the "hip black guy".

They definitely needed to restart Halloween. My only complaint is that they did it without killing Michael Myers permanently in the original continuity. I would have liked to see him go down in a hail of gunfire and then finally unmasked(for real, not that godawful unmasking in the original.

Why? Seriously, why do they. Why don't they instead of restarting and rebooting and reimagining and retarding, just start something, you know something fresh. Something that is so fundamentally good that we still care about it 20 or 30 years later. Why don't we do that instead?

NOT SEE IT. Are you sick to death of having to always say, when asked, "What did you think of The Fog?": "Wait, the original or the remake?" FUCK THIS SHIT! I'm tired as hell of having every goddamn movie I love being turned into some slack-jawed, cunt-piercing, fucking piece of shit. Let's use our geek powers for GOOD... not BITCHING. We can sit around all day and complain about how this person or that person "raped our childhood" or whatever idiotic thing you want to say... This time, let's DO something. Do you want to see a re-make of "The Thing" or "Escape From New York"? I sure as hell don't. So I propose to my fellow movie geeks-- do EVERYTHING within your power to tear these movies down. Beg your friends/family members/co-workers not to see it. Hell, offer to rent them the original instead. Start a blog. Do what fans of television shows do when faced with cancellation... send all kinds of bizarre shit to the studios until they cave. ANYTHING! Let's stop all the complaining, stand up and put a stop to these fuckers! ALL WE ARE SAYING... IS GIVE THE ORIGINALS A CHANCE! (sing along with me now)

Most of em aren't even remakes at all, they're just more sequels without having to put a large number at the end. When an audience sees "Part 5" after a movie title, they get wary, but if it's a remake, the studio can get rid of the baggage of sequilitis. I know I wouldn't see Texas Chainsaw Massacre part 5, but I might see Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Also, the remake thing offers no shortage of places to put the blame if the movie fails, and plenty of credit if it succeeds, thus, no one looses his or her job.

I'm sorry, but this review lost me when he/she said that Halloween needs a reboot. Halloween really was better off just going away as a series. Personally, I can barely remember any of the other Halloweens past the original and that is probably the way it should be. The original will stand the test of time and sequels will be forgotten. Besides, I don't buy any review that says that Halloween needs to be remade because of the piss poor sequels and then give a generally positive review about a film that by their own review cheapens the overall themes of the original movie.

You know, I think he should also portray the Blofeld character in a future Daniel Craig Bond movie. Something about the eyes would go great with a white cat. And then, to round out the McDowell-as-Pleasence trifecta, he can portray Kobras in the inevitable Pumaman remake. Either that or the President in the EFNY remake they are working on. Honestly I would rather see Pumaman Returns, EFNY was perfect as is. ^^;

We just need to know that he is evil. And will never stop. the tension exploded in the audience, myself included. My ass slid to the edge of my seat and my fingernails began to put indentations in my palm. The first time Michael puts on his mask also sent shivers up my spine... I'm not the right person to be evaluating it, because I'm too close to the material? ..more than a character. A shape. The shape. I thought Rejects and Corpses were not bad but not great and sure as hell not deserving of ther status they get nowadays - it looks like he's made another not bad film. Be sure that there will be an extra gore scene before the final release just to really fuck it up. Pointless remakes need to stop but they never will. I'm presuming Halloween 2 is in the works. What people don’t take into account when a remake happens is that you’re not going to their house, taking their DVD copy of the original and burning it. That movie still exists. Whether or not it’s an artistically progressive trend is grounds for a whole other discussion. There are so many channels and formats there could be an audience that wants to see The Godfather as a four hour fucking miniseries. Let people express themselves.

That so many people working on a movie fail to notice (or probably more likely are fearful to raise the point that the strength of the original piece was the fact we know nothing about the character.

Lucas made 3prequel movies about Vader the best screen villain ever created growing up and completely destroyed any kind of cool or mystery surrounding him for future audiences! Likewise Hannibal rising which I found to be competently made with good performances and excellent period detail but UTTERLY pointless as a Hanibal Lector piece and somehow penned by the original author!!!

This current trend of 'Re-Make everything only makes sense finantially and shows a complete lack of respect to the original film/makers and audience who apreciated the movies the first time out. Sometimes a remake works - The Thing and King Kong were decent takes but it's most infuriating to me when period films like Get Carter and now The Long Good Friday get greenlit especially with shit as fuck directors attached!

The Hulk's getting a re-boot or re-shuffle or whatever!? Why can't they just make Hulk 2? Or I know... Hulk the early years!

I don't get your point. I'm sure most Halloween fans didn't want those other sequels either. Besides In a weird way, I look at a watered down sequel differently than a remake of the original. I look at it this way. If my favorite restaurant wanted to start franchising itself, I wouldn't be upset if the food at the franchises wasn't as good as original. But if the original's food quality started to suffer I would be upset. I have different expectations for a remake of the original rather than a remake. Personally, I think the Michael Myers franchise should just die. I don't know if I really consider this to be a Halloween movie because everything I have read other than the character's names and a few similiar scenes, this movie is absolutely nothing like the original Halloween. In fact, I bet if you changed the names of the characters and the movie title, no one would ever guess this is a remake. If that's the case, how can any Halloween fans be excited for this movie?

That said, i really liked devils rejects so i was willing to keep an open mind and actually, for me, the bits that i liked best were the elements that were not taken from the first movie, but elaborations on things that had been hinted at - michael myers as a kid, the time in the asylum, etc basically i think it would have worked better if it had been done as a prequel, with the climax being a better escape from the institution (instead of the needlessly lurid and unbelievable one). the actual remake of the original which is the last half, glossed over so many characters that i actually hoped michael, whatever quest he was on - did he want his sister to go trick or treating with him like his older sister had neglected to do, hence her untimely death at the beginning? - would kill all the people in the town. i think zombie should have just made a new slasher movie, instead of remaking the original. that said, the killings and the suspense are handled really well, and although it is a remake, i think zombie is respectful enough of carpenter to give us an honourable, however pointless, movie. PS on the version i saw they were using the original movie's soundtrack, as someone else mentioned, and that definitely worked really well and i'm guessing the actual soundtrack will probably make my opinion less favourable.
