My guess is that it'll be Godfather this time around. Too bad it's only "American" films, because I can't really trust a greatest films of all time list that doesn't have any Kurosawa on it. I can't wait until the day when baby boomers aren't controlling these greates of lists, so we stop seeing films like the graduate (which is great, but not a top 100 film, let alone top 10) as one of the top tier selections.

Who are you? Have you ever met a filmmaker who don't think that's one of the best films ever made? I think that in the silly world of top ten lists, The Graduate might actually be UNDERrated, since it isn't as "serious" as Kane or Apocalypse Now or Godfather. What a flawless, perfectly realized film, that captured the spirit of a generation. C'mon, not top 100? Name 100 better.

I by no means think the Graduate is crap, I just think it's not one of the top 100 American films of all time. I can see how someone can make a case for it being there, but I just think it gets highly overated by the people who generally make up these list (i.e. baby booomers who came of age in 1967). If I was to pick better Hoffman flicks I'd say Lenny, Straight Time, All the President's Men, Kramer vs. Kramer, Straw Dogs, Midnight Cowboy. But I know it has nothing to do with it really being the best film, it's about what "Changed the world..blah..blah..I decided to hope in my vw bus and drive to Haight Ashbury...I dropped acid...etc." I guess I'm just more partial to his films that aren't drowned out by the 500th repeat of Scarborough Fair. Of course I'm just using the Graduate as an example. I'm sure going off the last 100 years 100 Movies list there will be plenty of films picked because of name recognition and cultural relevance instead of actual quality when stacked against other films not so famous and not so culturally relevant. I just hope it doesn't become a big Politically Correct love-in where something like Crash gets picked as one of the 100 greatest American films ever. I'll take them putting the Graduate on there over dreck like Crash.

It's about Mike Nichols' directing and about Buck Henry's writing. Most of the film people I know who love that film aren't Baby Boomers. It's all about the film, baby. It's a better FILM than Kramer vs. Kramer. Hoffman gives a better performance in Lenny, but that's not a better film. And why do you think that The Graduate would get Boomer votes, but not Midnight Cowboy? Or Hair? You're wrong - it has EVERYTHING to do with it really being the best film.

So as for the news that Calimist posted that there will now be an "Ultimate" DVD edition with four -- count 'em FOUR -- versions included, all I can say is "Why?!?"p>Seriously, talk about total all-out, no bones about it, complete cash whoring. For crying out loud, it's one thing to say you had a theatrical version that was cut and trimmed for particular reasons at the time...it's even another to say you then had a slight variant International version given foreign sensibilites. But by the time you officially declare something "The Director's Cut" and then promote it and sell it that way, I have to assume THAT'S the so-called final version Scott envisioned. But for him (or Warners) to say "Oh wait. Did we say that was the final cut? No, no! It turns out we have one MORE version to bilk you over" is just nuts. What comes after the Ultimate version? The Uber-Omega-Splenderific edition? So sorry to be so blunt, but fuck you, Scott and Warners. Your not getting my money yet AGAIN. Actually I'm with Xammas on this -- I wish it was LAST STARFIGHTER that had been reworked. Then we'd be talking about a movie that was basically fun and good, but which has been hampered long term over time by the decision way back when to go strictly with early age CGI. Updating STARFIGHTER to modern standards would actually create a really fun flick and one worth buying all over again. At least the markeing gimmick would be REAL. But yet another Blade Runner cut? No thank you. They already got my money a few times over for that particular hooker and frankly, in hindsight, she WAS a rather average fuck to begin with no matter how much you now try to re-dress her or change her makeup now...

Re-editing movies is popular in Sci-Fi, and that's fine too. Close Encounters was imporved greatly, as was The Abyss and Brazil. Star Wars and E.T. were hurt a little but not fatally. It seems the mess of rights issues that have been going on for about six or so years have been resolved and so Ridley Scott is now in the clear to complete his ultimate version of the movie, BLADE RUNNER: FINAL CUT (which, okay, is only the fourth version. I tend to exaggerate a tad). The recut is expected to have a limited 25th anniversary theatrical release in 2007. In anticipation of this event, Warner Bros. Home Video is reissuing a remastered DVD of the 1992 "Director's Cut," which, despite the name, Scott feels was rushed and not to his liking. You might want to keep that wad of cash in your pocket a little while longer, though, because, after the new theatrical run, the studio is planning on releasing a deluxe DVD that will include "Final Cut", "Director's Cut" and the harder-to-find 1982 original and expanded international theatrical cuts. The DVD will also boast some additional bonus materials. What does everyone think? Which version of the film do you prefer? Did you like the original narration? Glad it was excised? The AFI list seems to be very influenced by the movies film scholars watch over and over again to study every detail. The Searchers is no longer considered racist and is now an indictment of racism, so it goes from 96 to 12 (Good fucking movie, but that's a mighty jump.) There's more interest in silent comedy, so the General (previously unranked)and Chaplain's big three films go up a few notches (City Lights went from 60-something to 11.) And because Vertigo's now accepted as Hitchcock's most revealing film it shoots up from 61 to #8. More people are studying Scorcese so Raging Bull goes from 24 to 4.

What I was clearly bitching about was the same thing all home video consumers are bitching about: this constant reissuing and reissuing and reissuing of films under dubious banners of "Director's cut" or "ultimate cut" all to simply bilk more money out of the consumer. As I said, it's one thing to have a theatrical cut for BLADE RUNNER where certain choices might have been made (at the time) that Scott wanted to change, so he was a bit unhappy with it...it's one thing to even then have an International edition that's slightly different to skew to foreign tastes...but by the time you get around to doing a so-called "Director's Cut", by pure definition I'm expecting THAT to be it. But give me a fucking break here. The idea that you then had a "Director's Cut" which now has to be recut again because now the Director is saying the Director's cut wasn't what he wanted has to be the point we've truly reached Mystery Science Theater 3000 levels of comical lunacy. And I know, I know...no one's forcing me to buy it, blah, blah, blah. But that doesn't change the core point that this whole reissuing and "yet another all-new cut!" crap has become a true pox on the home video market. Of course my favorite one of all still has to be Oliver Stone with ALEXANDER the theatrical edition...versus ALEXANDER: The Director's Cut...versus ALEXANDER: The Extended Edition. What I loved was that the Director's cut was shorter than the actual release, yet then the studio tosses out the Extended Edition which really should have been called the "Hey, we never recouped all of our money on this crap film, so here's all the other film stock we had left in the can, which we were hoping someone out there would be so hard up to see that they'd toss a few more bucks our way" Cut.

You're telling me that BEN HUR, an all-time classic in epic filmmaking AND winner of the most Oscars till TITANIC came along, comes in BEHIND dated and heavy-handed ham like "Do the Right Thing" or "The Sixth Sense" -- which, sure, was a fun film, but let's face it, the only thing really memorable about Sixth Sense was the story hook (which quite a few of us figured out pretty damn early anyways) and once you get past that it really is just an "okay" film. But come on! Neither of those were better than fucking BEN HUR. We're talking Chuck and Chariots here!!!

Being a filmmaker myself, I admit interest in the whole affair and some of the 100 films are my all-time favs like works of Billy Wilder, Frank Capra, Scorsese, and Hitchcock, but it's still Hollywood selfless self-promoting. For instance, why aren't independent films on the list? Where is the work of John Cassavetes (I didn't see the whole show, just the top 20, so I take it back if he was somewhere on there), one of the first to work outside the system. And isn't working outside the system a big part of American filmmaking today? Not as AFI sees it. They are Hollywood, and to them, only films made within the studio system count. As I said, shameless self-promoting...

Also, The Searchers should have been top-10. That movie continues to get robbed. It was robbed on Oscar night, as it was robbed here. Citizen Kane is overrated. I admit I'm not an AFI expert, I just know generally what they're about, but I believe this list was about the 100 GREATEST, not BEST, American films. "Best" is more of a subjective thing, whereas "Greatest" can mean certain criteria were used, such as what VaderSabre said above. You can argue all night what you think Spike Lee's best film is, but his greates film is probably Do The Right Thing.

... I concede your point, and agree. But the poignancy of 25th Hour... the emotion. Spike Lee has grown so much as a director since Do the Right Thing. Think of it this way: How much better would The Color Purple have been if Spielburg directed it AFTER directing Schindler's List. I know it's subjective, but 25th Hour is great filmaking but a mature director. Also... Apocalypse Now a better film than The Godfather Part II? PLEASE! And now I say goodnight!

Hollywood likes its idea movies. It makes them feel like they're doing something greater than just entertaining the masses with popcorn fare. (It's probably the reason the studios backed Martin Scorsese's films for so long between his once in a blue moon moneymaker before he went all Leo DiCaprio on us) That said, Citizen Kane is the greatest Hollywood "idea" movie of all time. From the opening frame to the last, every shot, every scene boasts an idea or metaphor beyond the actual story or characters in the film. That's why it's consistently voted #1 movie of all time.

Trader Groucho 2: blockbusters president also said in that same report that if patron demand warrented it, they would definately offer hddvd in more retail locations as well. keep in mind there blu ray support is ONLY in 1400 or so locations. and its implied that the reason why bluray is doing well there is because of ps3 users renting them personally this doesnt affect me as i dont rent, why rent when you can own it for a little more heres something else on a slightly differnet matter but worth mentioning, it seems that the weinstien company holds the home video distribution rights to kill bill not buena vista, so guess what will most likely be comming to HDVDVD (NOT BLURAY) this november around the same time it hits standard dvd kill bill the whole bloody afaiR

That was the most blaring thing for me. I saw it last year for the first time; it had some great moments that were hidden in between tortuously long shots of Jimmy Stewart driving. I know the pace was slower back then, but that was slow even for its time; Psycho is paced brilliantly and deserved to be higher. Also, that scene in Vertigo after Stewart meets Novak again, and she goes into her room and writes him a letter explaining the entire plot of the movie - maybe the clumsiest exposition I've ever seen. It has a brilliant ending, and I'm not saying it's a bad movie, just nowhere near top 10 material. Psycho's better and North by Northwest, while certainly not as heavy, is more entertaining.

Freake, if you only saw Vertigo for the first time last year, then maybe you're unaware of Vertigo's place in "The Master's" lexicon of movies. Vertigo is consistently considered his greatest film by any critic, film scholar, or Hitchcock expert. The great documentary filmmaker Chris Marker made a film about Vertigo and its apparent cyclicle theme of time. Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys, which was a "re-make" of Marker's La Jetee also was inspired by Vertigo. Of all Hitchcock's films, any moviemaker will tell you that Vertigo had the biggest influence on them. Thematically, it's one of the earliest popular American movies to deal with the dark side of love and obsession. It was Hitchcock's personal favorite. As I argued above in another post, you can argue all night what your favorite Hitchcock movie is, but based on AFI's criteria, Vertigo is his greatest.

...is that it kept getting billed as the "10th Anniversary Edition" when their original list came out 9 years ago. Tee hee. Seriously, however, in addition to being peeved about Tootsie (good movie, but overrated) ranking ahead of Saving Private Ryan, Titanic still getting recognized ahead of L.A. Confidential, and City Lights being up so high (the most overrated Chaplin, I think almost all of his other classics are better), my biggest problem with this was the complete drop-off of The Third Man, Fantasia, and The Manchurian Candidate. Oh, and that no one outside of the hardcore fans realize that The Empire Strikes Back is better than Star Wars. That whole "culturally significant" criteria that gives so many of these movies a free pass in a lot of ways, though it didn't work for The Jazz Singer and Rebel Without a Cause this time around. I had seen 322 of the 400 nominated films, and made up my own list, which I already realized needs to be looked at again, but still. This list was definitely surprising in some respects. I couldn't believe The General being so high since it wasn't ranked the first time. I couldn't believe how high The Searchers jumped either. Knowing where it had been ranked originally, once they got past Shane somewhere in the 40's (too high, in my opinion), I figured The Searchers had been dropped. On this list, there are still 5 I have not seen, those being Intolerance, Cabaret, Nashville, Swing Time and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? I've been dreading to watch Woolf and Cabaret for awhile, but they're all atop my Netflix list now. Also, to the person who complained about only 1 post-2000 released movie on the list. Well, that's the way it is. Look back at the original list of 100 and there were only about 10-15 from post-1980! Some of those movies, including Dances With Wolves, Fargo, and Amadeus went unranked this time. I think that for any movie to be properly judged along with the best of all time, at least 10 years needs to elapse, and maybe even 20. It's all a big debate, anyway, everyone has their own preferences. P.S. The Graduate is a good movie, but it's vastly overrated and doesn't hold up well anymore, just like other good, but overrated movies like Easy Rider, American Graffiti, and, to a certain extent, Gone With the Wind.

....anyone who does more than a cursory amount of research on this particular piece of film history KNOWS that NOT ONE of the cuts (workprint, theatrical, international, video, 10th anniversary, "director's" cut) was actually CUT and FINISHED and APPROVED by Ridley himself (not that everyone agrees on whether this is a BAD thing, btw) maybe on or two, but NEVER all three....in each case, he was rushed, hounded, browbeated or simply exhausted enough to accuiesce and release each version that came out.....finally, after all these years, we will see the BR version of the autodoc, the dancing geisha girls with hockey masks, proper wire removal, continuity glitches (that a 4 year old wopuld have repaired, if not for studio money-saving and politics) fixed, the CHOICE of narration or no, and just maybe even a unicorn shot (conflicted about the scene as I am) that WAS ACTUALLY SHOT FOR THE FILM (instead of for "legend") !!!!! wienerPenis, I did notice a few new bits....the aforementioned Hockey Geishas, that looks to actually be Joanna Cassiday in the Esper-retouched photo and window-crash bits...not to mention some nice wire-removal and matte-retouching... AT LAST< A COPY OF MY FAVOURITE FLICK WITH A PICTURE NOT PORTED OR SULLIED BY MACROVISION!! .....time...to die.... :)

While Saving Private Ryan was a nice (okay, great?) tribute to our WWII veterans and also a riveting piece of moviemaking, it didn't have the cultural impact Tootsie had at its time. Tootsie crossed gender and cultural boundaries like no other popular American movie had since Wilder's Some Like It Hot. And as for Ryan's recreation of landing Normandy Beach on D-Day, the idea of recreating tragic or enormous historical events to such a scale was not really new. Titanic was really the first to do it in a recent movie, in fact, Titanic was probably the first popular American movie to do it on such a scale since Gone With The Wind. Yes, Titanic is definitely the modern Gone With The Wind, though not as good a film, which accounts for its place on the AFI list.

It is actually one of the most ripped off sci-fi films in terms of atmosphere and tone. The current incarnation of Battlestar Galactica owes it's whole life to Blade Runner. And that's not a put down; Eick and Moore have even said they were going after the tone and feel of Blade Runner on BSG. It's an especially great film to view rainy day.

A quick scan of the internet shows that all articles I've seen do state that "Shadow of a Doubt" was his favorite. I do know that "Vertigo" was not popular with the public at its time of release. Citizen Kane deserves its spot, bitches. Its out of this world. Blade Runner isn't overrated; it's masterful. Maybe the best film of the last 25 years. And Hitchcock said his favorite of his own films was Shadow of a Doubt. Don't believe me? Those words came straight out of his daughter's mouth. Oh yeah, Titanic shouldn't be on the list (or Sixth Sense), Raiders should be higher, Star Wars IS better than Empire (it works better as a stand-alone film, contains many more iconic moments, though Empire does have that cliffhanger ending going for it). Nice to see big jumps for Raging Bull, City Lights and The Searchers. Oh, and expert40, you're wrong on so many points, it's pretty ridiculous. Blu-Ray sales are NOT inflated by video game sales (the numbers count only films on Blu-Ray), and the PS3 has outsold any and all HD-DVD players and continue to do so. Where you got the idea that there are more HD-DVD players in homes than PS3s, I donno. More HD-DVD players than stand-alone Blu-Ray players? Definitely. But if you count the PS3, the numbers shift completely in favor of Blu-Ray. Anyway, check your facts next time, bub.

I think it's going to be top of the alltime boxoffice heap for a while, since these summer epics now are poised to make all their money in the first weekend, then drop off 55-65% in its next and they run out of steam. Don't think we'll ever see again a film which was #1 at the boxoffice for 3 months in a row.

Blade Runner is not over-rated. Its love is more on a cult level and always has been - Ebert even ripped it a new one when he first reviewed it (He since has changed his opinion on it slightly). On the AFI list, one thing that stod out for me is Saving Private Ryan being on there and the movie that (somehow) beat it at the Oscars (Shakespeare in Love) was not on it. A very telling thing.

Well, Blade Runner seems logical but I'm hoping for 2001. The movie was rereleased to the theaters during the movie's 30th anniversary. "Although studio executive Barry Reardon wanted to add digital effects to the film, plus some of the footage cut out of the original release, this idea was rejected by Kubrick, who completed supervision of the film’s digital remastering before his death in March 1999." Needless to say, it HAS to be one of the Sci-Fi films on this list.

sorry to interject my opinion, but this movie is very boring and doesn't bring anything new to the bleak futuristic movie genre. Also Ford is not good in this movie. I've fallen asleep everytime i've tried to watch it. I dont know why it is so beloved by fans, but whatever. Also I am very glad Citizen Kane is on top of the list, it is the greatest movie of all time. There are more modern movies that have a better story, but for the time what Welles and company were able to do was amazing. I suggest renting Kane instead of watching Blade Runner for the 10th time. Thanks for your time.

How about Yor, Hunter from the Future? I remember watching that on my neighbor's "video"disc player. Seems like he had the same three movies...Yor, Just one of the Guys, and Return of the Jedi. You pick the good one out of those three. And, I'm definately with you Black Hole, Spacehunter, Flash Gordon, and Battle Beyond the Stars fanatics. Remember (in Battle Beyond) the council's reluctance to let Shad(Richard Thomas)take the boob-ship, Nell to take the evil nemesis. "He's just a boy!" and the next line should have been, "Yes, John Boy!" Those were the days. Not sure how I feel about another version of Bladerunner, but any chance to see the dvd quality improved sound and picture-wise would be great. And, I definately want to see it on the big screen. Seeing Wrath of Khan and Raiders was okay with mom, but I'm sure Bladerunner wouldn't have been at age 11 and a half. hehe

Two films that whole heartedly deserve to be there. I mean... really.. how long will it take Rocky Horror Picture Show to get on the list? And that was only a milestone in pop culture entertainment and probably the longest theatrical run for a movie ever. Basically you have a shitload of headbobbers(especially brainless actors trained to follow 'direction') voting for this trash list cowtowing to their old film teachers on what they think constitute the greatest american films of all time. And they end up seriously far from the mark.. especially when it comes to present day material. One film in the 2000's is an absolute joke.

And, who can forget the Corman borrowed ships, effects, etc in his Battle Beyond followup....Space Raiders! And,kudos to whoever mentioned Robot Jox! I guess we never had to worry about the lack of a good Battletech Mechwarrior movie after that was released to VHS. Uugghh. I was old enough to realize that movie was sh*t. Not even good cheese. As for people mentioning 2001...it's supposed to be released again on dvd(I think). I think it will include documentaries, features, etc. I don't mind re-purchasing if it does. That movie sorely needs special features.

The opening scenes are freaking incredible, but Vince Diesel crying about his niece and Ted Danson looking 700 years old isn't really all that compelling. I'm glad it was made though because it let Spielberg play around and figure out how to make Band of Brothers. Instead of limiting themselves to a set number, they should aim to list as many of the best films as possible without regards to how long the list becomes. If the final tally of the greatest American films ends up being 136 or 212 or 384 titles, then so be it. Completeness is better.

The Blade Runner DVD set may in fact be the best DVD EVER. On another note the list again was eh, some good some bad.
