The guy chainsawing through the lines as the other guy tries to finish whatever it is he's doing, the SWAT guy who catches himself on the rose bush, Al Leong nicking a chocolate bar. I love that stuff, and those little things get missed a lot in modern action films. Anyway, pretty good review, although I think Motoko Kusanagi (sorry if spelling is wrong) should have got this gig. Sounds like what everyone was fearing - bland action shenanigans and whatnot, which is a shame. I'm still seeing it, though.

It's been proven for like the last 2-3 years that you can make a hard R movie and it'll sell. 40-Year Old Virgin and Knocked Up were completely hard R's and they sold well. That part of the trailer was all i needed to see to know this movie is crap. That scene is right up there with the scene in TRANSPORTER 2 where he flips the car upside down to scrape the bomb off the bottom. At least the Transporter movies are SUPPOSED to be ludicrous. Taking DIE HARD out of closed envirnment is incrediby stupid as well. The closed environment is the whole POINT of DIE HARD. That's the formula. Making this as a de-fanged, de-formulized installment of the original franchise basically turns it into just another action movie. You could substitute Seagal for the lead role and it wouldn't make any difference. Fucking suits.

It seemed clear from the ads that the CGI 'splosions took the place of the gritty behind-this-guy realism of the first flick. They descend from that more with each movie, so not a big shock. I'm sure I'll see it anyway. It's gotta be better than that Transformers crap.

When I saw the manner in which McClane dispatches the helicopter with a police car in the trailer, I died a little inside; it seemed too over the top, too implausible, and so out of character (like McClane not dropping the F-bombs). McClane isn't meant to be a some sort of world class stunt driver-cum-engineer. He's a cop - who's only speciality should be wise cracking and causing chaos with guns or what ever he can get his hands on (within reason). But to be able to use a car like an RPG to take down a helicopter. Jesus Fu(gunshot) Christ! And while I'm ranting: what was the point of using the fire extinguisher in the hall scene? McClane throws the fire extinguish at the bad guys and fires at the canister so that it'll explode and send Mr faceless henchman out through the window. Wouldn't it be easier for McClane just to plug two holes into the guy's head. Or would that have that upset the censors?

Can't make a DIE HARD film without John Mctiernan directing (or at least any of the Gordon/Silver/Gordon producers behind it). Holly McClane and sgt. Al Powell are characters that audiences wanted back into the series ever since DH3. The villian/movie quality factor: Hans Gruber (superb), colonel Stuart (cartoonish but very fun) and Simon Gruber (a different turn while still packing a wallop). R, PG-13 or NC-17, there must be bullets, blood, profanity galore and, above all, a good story plus a claustrophobic scenario. Make no excuses, you own DIE HARD franchise: whether it's on a plane, boat, subway station... hell, you can even go back to Nakatomi, a hockey arena or a LA bus. Live Free or Die Hard feels like Die Hard in the entire USA. Die Hard all over the world for the fifth installment? Why can't Willis grow some of his still natural hair instead of going bald all the way (that signature now belongs to 12 Monkeys, Unbreakble and -alert!- Hostage). Finally, I ask for "the good vibe" (in front and behind the camera) so each and every movie could really satisfy those who purchase the tickets, the same ones that allows you, Hollywood players, to eat your gourmet food, drive expensive cars and earn your actual undeserved paychecks. How far are we from 1988. Now everything is getting teenagers to the theater like they were some sort of cattle. Don't just make a buck, earn it and do it with your heart (OK, so I got it from Jerry Maguire, sue me).

This film sounds quite disappointing and ultimately not worth seeing. It was one of the only movies I was looking forward to this summer. It's a shame they neutered it to appeal to a wider audience. I think one reason the first Die Hard works so well and stands up so well is what's been pointed out here - an effort is made to make the action at least a little believable. You can almost FEEL what the protagonist is going through. The cut feet. When he hits the guardrail on the roof and the wind is knocked out of him. When he is struggling to stretch in the elevator shaft. The claustrophobia of the ventilation duct. It takes a little effort for McClane to get anything done. To go from that to TRUE LIES type action is sequelitis at its worst.

I started coming to this site about 8 years ago or so (it's been long time) I have loved harry's reviews at first but lately i don't know. I do believe he liked daredevil which i didn't and i can't believe he liked FF2. I haven't seen FF2 but FF1 was shit. But still i have faith that Harry hasn't completely sold out. But i just can't imagine HOW DH4 can come close to being good with a pg13 rating. Seriously. Ugh. When Bruce showed up here, I had hope for this movie. Surely a star so aggressively defending his movie would have something worth defending...after all, I ate crow when I saw that Rocky Balboa was actually good. But with as fast as he disappeared and his silence since, I've had a bad feeling. When it was PG13 I had a worse feeling. ...to make a PG-13 rated Die Hard. I don't think there's going to be any more violence in the "unrated" DVD, I'm pretty sure it's all in the theatric version. They probably submitted it to the MPAA and had it returned to them as an R-rated movie because of the language, not the violence. Rothman probably figured he could get a PG-13 easily then by just cutting some of the "Fucks" out of the dialog. Is he still a pussy for doing so? Of course he is. Is Bruce Willis still a little bitch for coming on here and trying to sell this watered down shit as "the best Die Hard yet"? Unfortunately, yes, yes he fucking is. But the action in the trailers still looks pretty cool, the first time I saw that car about to land on Willis and the Mac kid in the tunnel then the other two cars get in the way at the last second, I was floored. I just wish this wasn't a Die Hard movie, I wish it was a random action movie with Willis and the Mac kid in it, then I'd be able to accept that gay ass PG-13 rating.

I like how this was going to be an amazing movie summer. Spider-man was corny, Shrek 3 wasn't funny, Pirates 3 was one of the worst movies ever. Surfer was a lot like the first film. Now we have a shitty pg-13 action movie with an old Bruce Willis. This film will bomb especially if fans don't go action movies rely on action fans not stupid kids they'll go see Pirates or something instead. It's sad to think Transformers and Harry Potter have to save the summer.

In EW's write up on Die Hard, they nail it in the first sentence. He's just a guy. Now that was 20 years ago, before GCI stuntplayers can duplicate any kind of death defying stunt a director can dream up. And DHWAV did have Mclane get blown out of the tunnel like a whales blowhole, and the jump onto the ship was pretty farfetched ( although the guy getting wire-sliced in half was cool ). Sooo, let me swim against the current and say despite the lack of "fucks", which Willis could sell in his New Jersey wise ass delivery in spades, I'm willing to give this a chance. As long as the action isn't too preposterous, and Olyphant makes a decent villian ( the dude from GO! ), I'll give it a go. I've been disappointed by Spider3, and bored by Pirates. The next big action flick is based on a toy line, and Bourne is not till August. The best time I had in the movies this summer so far was Knocked Up, so, if LFODH doesn't live up to the franchise entirely, but provide entertaining action, I'll be there. You can all call me a pussy now....

I LOVE the original. I like 2 and 3 a lot, with a slight edge to 2 because it's at night and in a more confined setting. Still, some points go to 3 for the elevator shooting, which was more brutal and fun than anything in 2. The annex skywalk shootout was fun, but let's face it, it was very stylized with lots of slo-mo. Can't beat the old "I think I've got the winning ticket right HERE," although I must say "yipee kay yay motherfobang" might come close Not.

These two are the last of the big summer blockbusters left. Shrek 3, SM3 were both let downs. POTC3 was the better of the three. The surprise has been F42. It has been the best summer film so far. It was actually entertaining but not great, but no one was expecting F4 to be ground breaking. Die Hard 4 or 5 seems to be heading in that mediocre to mildly entertaining territority. The Transformers looks like it's going to deliver, and Harry potter will turn out to be the best Summer film if transformers fail. The harry Potter films are the most stable of the franchises. It looks great.
