Have you seen this?? http://www.darkhorizons.com/ne ws07/070618c.php The disappointing box-office of "Hostel: Part II" has upset quite a few, most notably its director Eli Roth who says on his blog that it will have an knock-on effect. The most notable one will be a delay in his adaptation of Stephen King's "Cell" - "I am not directing Cell any time soon, and I most likely will take the rest of the year to write my other projects. Which means I wouldn't shoot until the spring and you wouldn't see a film directed by me in the cinemas until at least next fall." He cites the infamous leaked pirate copy of the film as one of the reasons for the damaging box-office, especially internationally. Unlike other movies leaked online and taken with video cameras, "Hostel II" was notably a near DVD-quality unfinished work print. He also adds that the R-rated horror genre is in serious jeopardy after several notable failures this year - "studios feel the public doesn't want them anymore, and so they are only putting PG-13 films into production. The only way to counter this perception is to get out there and support R-rated horror." KEEP MAKING EXCUSES ELI!!!! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

It's called "Death Wish". Now leave Thomas Jane alone and give the guy a chance to star in a decent film, will ya?

Not comic, not funny, just gritty, angry and enjoyably predictable. You always knew he was going to kill the bad guys, and that is what made it awesome. No inner struggle, no emoting, no lame ass neighbors. Just him, a warehouse, maaaaybe Microchip, and a lot of guns, and no sense of humor.

I'm a big punisher fan going back to 1986. The first film was shit. The Tom Jane film was cool, a little uneven but it works. Now lions Gate wants to do another with a new director/star combo. They have no respect for Jane, he lived and breathed the character for 4 years, he wanted to do a better film. What the hell do they want? I see a former pro wrestler in the next directed by Alan Smithee. Lions gate, at this point you are proving your head is so far up your ass its lapping at your neck. From a punisher fan, leave it alone. You don't know what you got in the property (Jane did but you don't want him.....this is the crazy I'm talking about) so leave it alone. "Just walk away."

24 pages of comic? Maybe 20-30 pages of screen time. You stretch that kind of thing over 90 minutes, you get nothing better than EXTERMINATOR II. Mind you, Robert Ginty's still alive...

...and VERY dispirting to know that the producers are STILL trying to make a Punisher movie on the cheap! Tight-ass motherfuckers! It doesn't have to be mega-bucks, it's a guy shooting people after all, but to try and make a decent action flick for £17m (or whatever chickenfeed the first movie cost) just isn't going to cut it in this day and age. SPEND SOME FUCKIN' MONEY, SHITBIRDS.

shows that Dahl gets the Punisher far more then anyone else seems to. Jane seems to get it, some directors seem to get it, why can't Lionsgate get it? Its not rocket science, its a Punisher movie.

Sure, Eli Roth is a hack; now he's a hack and a whining pussy. He just can't reconcile himself to one fact: HOSTEL 2 sucked, though he'll blame everyone else for its failure. He chastises critics for screening the on-line, pirated print--though he declines to specifically to identify the reviewers (get the gist? He's a liar). The film's financial/critical failure may have dissuaded investors from linking Roth to "Cell" ("From the man who brought you HOSTEL"? Not exactly a ringing endorsement). Roth's rants are predictable, juvenile--and quite sad/pathetic. Roth co-produced 2001 MANIACS; he could learn quite a lot from that film's director, Tim Sullivan.

FIND A WAY TO GET TOM JANE BACK ON THE SEQUEL! And then, find a way to move it back to NYC, where the punisher belongs. Anyone buy or see the second Punisher dvd? Wondering if it's worth the upgrade.

Roth insists that HOSTEL 2 made its money back ($10 million; wow, what an achievement). It's a lie. The film would have to gross more than $20 million just to break even (TV, radio, print ads, ad infinitum). And various European territories have declined to release the movie (resistant to torture porn). And, sorry, it won't be a megahit on DVD. No wonder that Lionsgate is pink-slipping. I've heard that a nice gig is awaiting him in downtown L.A.; I just hope he'll be more efficient at washing cars than making crappy movies.

factor in overseas (sp?) gains, plus DVD sales and you've got a movie that ends up in the black, just look at Superman Returns.

The issue ends up not being that it turns a profit, but if it did as well as the last film, which it didn't.

I'll admit I'll try and back Roth up just for making a movie he believed in, but Hostel 2 was not as good as the original. If I had my say, I would've gone the Devils Rejects aproach and made it where you kinda feel for the killers (imagine someone killing someone that looks similar to a person who raped them, now that's identifying).

Roth fucked up thinking that we'd care for underdeveloped characters and cookie cutter villians (and don't get me on the whole anti-American undertones).

I thought that was directed at the scene with the kids playing soccer, or maybe Roth was just trying to sale the ending as "too shocking!".

I've seen some gross shit (google Bud Dwyer Video to get woozeey or go to South Padre during spring break), so Hostel 2 wasn't exactly shocking.

Eli Roth's career (the vanishing act)
by thegreatwhatzit
Jun 19th, 2007

Roth is second only to Jesse Jackson as the #1 p.r. whore. I recall, on the heels on CABIN FEVER, that he was invited to join a panel of veteran directors (Wes Craven, Stuart Gordon, Tobe Hooper, et al). Roth showboated the q&a session, hogging the limelght. The real filmmakers camouflaged the tedium with "What an asshole!" grins. Never mind that CABIN FEVER made ony a modest profit, Roth kept referring to it as some sort of blockbuster. This guy is delusional. William Castle made mosty mediocre flms(though I'm impassioned with THE TINGLER and kinda admire MR. SARDONICUS) and slung the bullshit when promoting his commerce. But you loved the guy, he was akin to an eccentric uncle. Roth registers as a smug fratboy (in league with the Clintons) who thinks that he owns the only video camera on campus. The erosion of his career is his own fault--naturally, he has deflected responsibilty by blaming pirates, the Internet, ad infinitum. His only compatriots are this site and "Fangoria" magazine (the latter existng solely as a press release for the studios). Wonder if Tarantino will invite Roth this year's Chritmas party?...maybe if he agrees to herald the other guests by dressing as an elf and ringing a bell on the front lawn.
