Brazil music?

Jun 16th, 2007

Man, are you guys young or what? That song might be "Brazil music" or music from "Brazil" in the strictest sense because it was featured in the film "Brazil." But that song IS "Brazil." It was not written for the film; the film got its title from the song. And it's called "Aquarela do Brasil" or "Watercolor of Brasil" or for us English speakers, "Brazil."

It's famed for being a very patriotic song for Brazil. It's funny because the original lyrics (translated from the Portugese) are strikingly different from the English version most of us know...

If this doesn't display properly, please visit http://daniellathompson.com/ar y/lista.html for the translations.

Here's the one we're used to:

Brazil (English lyrics by S.K. “Bob” Russell) Brazil The Brazil that I knew Where I wandered with you Lives in my imagination. Where the songs are passionate, And a smile has flash in it, And a kiss has art in it, For you put your heart in it, And so I dream of old Brazil Where hearts were entertaining June, We stood beneath an amber moon And softly murmured “someday soon” We kissed and clung together, Then tomorrow was another day The morning found me miles away With still a million things to say Now when twilight dims the sky above, Recalling thrills of our love, There’s one thing I’m certain of; Return I will To old Brazil.

And here's a more accurate translation:

Aquarela de Brasil (Translation by Daniella Thompson)

Brazil My Brazilian Brazil My cunning mulatto I will sing of you in my verses Oh, Brazil, samba that gives swing, That makes people sway Oh, Brazil of my love Land of Our Lord Brazil! Brazil! For me... for me... Ah, open the curtain of the past Bring the Black Mother1 down from the mountains Place the Congo King2 in the congado3 Brazil! Brazil! Let the minstrel sing again In the melancholy moonlight Every song of his love I want to see the Bahian woman4 walking, Trailing through the salons5 Her lacy skirts6 Brazil! Brazil! For me... for me... Brazil Good and savory land Of the cunning dark-skinned woman With an indiscreet gaze Oh, Brazil, green that makes The world amazed Oh, Brazil of my love Land of Our Lord Brazil! Brazil! For me... for me... Oh, this palm tree that gives coconuts Where I hang my hammock On clear moonlit nights Oh, hear these murmuring fountains Where I slake my thirst And where the moonlight comes to play Oh, this Brazil, beautiful and swarthy Is my Brazilian Brazil Land of samba and pandeiro Brazil! Brazil! For me... for me... Notes: 1. Black Mother: main figure in the Ilê Aiyê fest 2. Congo King: a slave crowned in a traditional fest 3. Congado: feast of Our Lady of the Rosary 4. Bahian woman: metaphor for Black Brazil 5. Salons: metaphor for White Brazil 6. Lacy skirts: traditional costume of Bahian women

WALL-E = Transformers 2 I just came back from dinner at Michael Bay's house, - he said he'll only do a live action adaptation if he gets to put a camera on the ground and film 15 scenes in each action sequence as if roadkill were watching it through filtered HD goggles. he wants 15. No 20! No a 100!! and he wants will smith to do the voice(AKA - BIG WILL*E) and scream a lot, and cars exploding, and robots, lots and lots of robots. he said he won't do it unless there are lots & lots of robots. He then explained in painstaking detail how we would all break out of stalag-17 at sharp midnight. Shhh!, the Nazis will hear the flames!

That's what I thought.

Seriously, guys. This is the least inspiring teaser for a Pixar flick in years, maybe ever. Aren't any of you tired of kiddy friendly Pixar crap or are you happy with the way they play everything safe?

Pixar is placing themselves in the position that Disney was in a decade or two ago. Just because they lead the industry people think they own it. Because of that, everybody and their mother clones them.

Where's the PG-13 and over CG? When Pixar pushes into the PG zone and we hail it as mature CG storytelling, as happened with Incredibles, there's a problem. The CG industry will never have its equivalent of Casablanca, Gandhi, or even Haloween if all people accept is this rugrat crap.

Pixar was in the right place at the right time. That's it. Wall-E might be fun, but it's probably more of the same old same old. Its probably even filled with the same cliches that they've been milking for the past 12 years.

Pixar plans their shit 5 years in advance. Want a bright future where CG isn't just "cartoons", but actual animation? Demand it now.

Apart from verging on being self-congratulatory, this teaser screams Playskool, crying 5 year olds, and stuffed toys.

Is that what you want? No? Stop sucking up to Pixar. They cannibalize ideas from other movies and shorts only to pass them off as originality. Anybody who says that Cars wasn't Doc Hollywood needs to play "7 minutes in heaven" with a damn rattlesnake.

Pixar isn't the shit. This teaser isn't brilliant. Wall-E does look like a ROB/Johnny5 rip.

Don't suck up to Pixar. They don't deserve it as much as you (or they) think.

... who says that a rating makes a movie "mature"?

I think one of the things that makes Pixar impressive is the way they can deal with emotional and thematic complexity in a way that speaks to all audiences. Just slapping some swear words or violence or nudity into something does not automatically equal maturity.

RATATOUILLE deals with some pretty heady ideas, and so did THE INCREDIBLES, and so did FINDING NEMO, and so did TOY STORY 2. These are mature films, full of actual ideas that shame most of what passes as "adult" filmmaking right now. You can have your obligatory R-rating. I'll stick with filmmakers who respect me enough to know that the rating isn't why I'm there.

... while it's true that the song "Brazil" is a standard that's been around for decades, the exact arrangement in that trailer is from Michael Kamen's score for BRAZIL, specifically when we first see the offices where Sam Lowry works. It's an instrumental arrangement that uses typewriters as part of the orchestration, and that's hardly the normal version of the song.

Oh and thanks for spoiling FF4 2, which I haven't seen yet.

It wasn't until The Black Cauldron that Disney got around to getting above a G rating, yet somehow they maintained the highest quality standard in the animation industry (while consistently drawing in audiences of all ages) doing that "Rugrat crap" as you so eloquently put it. You want animation with more adult ratings? Anime has the market cornered so by all means engorge yourself on those if that's your fancy. That's not Pixar's niche.

Obviously there are a lot of us who don't see these films as little kiddie stuff 'cause many of us regular adults own and watch them too.

I watch these movies because they don't treat the adults in the audience as adults, and they are emotionally engaging.

If it was an hour and a half of watching a rat cooking, I'd agree with you, but since you claim to have watched and enjoyed the rest of Pixar's library so far, wouldn't you agree that summarizing it that way likely sells it short by a lot? I could summarize lots of movies by describing superficial circumstances and make it sound like the dullest movie ever (a couple of toys trying to find their way home, Superheroes struggle with bureaucracy, toys try to rescue another toy, a racecar gets stranded in a desert town, father fish looks for lost son), but all of that ignores what those movies are really about, so I have no doubt Ratatouille will live up to the Pixar tradition of quality.

has always been about stories first.......saying they dont tell mature stories because all their films are rated G is stupid. Toy Story 1 and 2, Incredibles, Bug's Life, Finding Nemo and Monster's Inc all have themes which are very mature but also universal. This summer is filled with stupid movies with no story and just big special effects...its nice to have someone out their willing to actually tell a real story.

Pixar are pixar, they make the films they want to make, the way they make them. above all they put story first. you may not love every single film they produce, but that doesnt make it unworthy of existence. even at their lowest point, they tell a story worth hearing... they have something to say with every film, something that our global tribe needs to hear. you cant judge pixar movies against others... they have the magic that disney used to create.... Pixar dont make movies, they create this generations fairytales. they just use computers to do it, just like disney used pencils to create your childhood, and shape the person you are today.

How short-sighted of a statement is that? "Everything's been downhill since the Incredibles." Yes, brilliant observation. It's not like Incredibles came out in 1992; they've only had one frakking movie since then. Ratatouille isn't even released, and no one's had anything bad to say about it, except people who haven't actually seen it. Jesus, man, give a company a fucking break! "After 6 straight masterpieces, and one very good film, I thought Pixar was losing it."
Pixar is the only reason to watch American animated...

films. I wouldn't give Ratatouille a second glance if it wasn't coming from that company.
Anyone? Bugs Bunny? The Brazil song? And SDMonkey -

It's now driving me crazy! Surely someone has a frame of reference beyond Johnny 5 (who is just as derivative of previously existing designs from the real world)? That sounds a bit mean, but you know what I'm sayin... You could also argue he looks like the binocular-head droid from Star Wars. Don't get me wrong though. This little glimpse looks really cool.

Sonicdeathmonkey, I think you got the wrong impression. Saying they decided it was time to get into another feature and stating that they "knocked around a bunch of ideas" doesn't imply that the lunch is where they came UP with those ideas, just that it was the first time they'd put them on the table (so to speak) and began developing them. So IMHO your 'profitable' thing is based on a misconception, although admitedly it was slightly vague. Think about that. Oh, and ;)!

As good as this will undoubtedly be..

..I really hope that it's funny. Pixar set the bar so high that Cars, as quality a film as it is, almost came across as a failure of sorts. And to the douche who seems to think that mature films only come with an adult rating I have 4 words for you, "Alone In The Dark".
So what happens? He goes into space?

I got chills from the trailer thinking of Sam Lowrey's workplace in Gilliam's masterpiece. Brazil has been my #1 favorite movie of all time since I first saw it. Surprisingly, I saw Time Bandits and Baron Munchuasen in the theater on their initial release, but I didn't see Brazil until those two, on late night TV. Did anyone else buy the Criterion Laserdisc, like I did? I shelled out over $100 for that sucker when it came out, and now the whole thing is on DVD for a third of the price.
Brazil on Criterion LD, yes.

It's a magnificent film. I can't even start discussing it, because I could fill a page.
I love the fact that a Pixar trailer can actually...

promote their previous films and the creative process of their writers/directors. What other company can put out a trailer where they say, yeah I sneezed into a tissue and the resulting snot shape gave me an idea for a movie, and you'll see it because everything else I've done kicks ass.
Mmmm. Criterion LD

Me too. Even though I berate morons who go on about being 'forced' to buy their collection again on the HD format instead of just playing their old DVDs on the new players, Seven, Toy Story, Brazil, Yojimbo and Seven Samurai are the few (mostly Criterion) LDs that I bought again when the remastered versions came out for DVD. Still watch the old "Definitive Collection" (ha ha) Star Wars on LD. Don't have a big telly yet so a well-mastered LD still holds up pretty well.

I was saying in another TB that another reason I wish this format war would end is that then we can finally get some high-def Criterion goodness!

does Disney insist on putting out Pixar films in summertime to get lost in the mess of summer movies? (I actually know why...so the DVD can be out just in time for Xmas...it still sucks.)

No, not completely. But I'd have to agree with the person who made the comment about how we'll never get a Casablanca-equivalent in animation if all we expect and hope for is the typical Pixar fare. Honestly, time and again I've seen folks - who I think can be described as fanboys for Pixar - rise up to defend that studios' films anytime anyone brings up the issue of "Do Pixar films deserve the hype that they're given?". Honestly, I don't think they do. Pixar is successful, and I think a large part of that(whether they'd admit to it or not) is because they follow formulas. It's not plagiarism on the level of "Kimba", and I'm sure that the story staff there are fully aware of the similarities in their story choices with other films. But, let's face it, they're not making the next Lawrence of Arabia. They make take a twist here or a turn there every so often in their films, sure; but for the most part, I'm not left thinking about their stories, cinematics, or even (gasp) their animation after I've sat through the typical 1 hr 45 minute journey on screen. Most folks who do spend inordinate amounts of time talking about Pixar are usually animation dorks... (and no disrespect to aforementioned dorks, because I can just as easily be lumped into that group of misfits and f*ckoffs). But... I also like stories that have something more to say than just "Anthropomorphic animal/object goes on typical hero arc adventure". There's not much to say about the look of the films, design wise and all. They look fine - with the help of CG rendering and lighting, and all that technology affords animation - but I think it would be interesting to take those designs and put them into a traditional setting, animation wise. I know that a lot of the development is done by folks with a bg in traditional, and they do a lot of the concepts as traditionally rendered pieces. So...How would it hold up as a traditional animation? I'm sure animation folks would still break wood over how it would look, but - given what I've seen of their in-house development, and how a lot of that gets lost in translation no matter what, I think it wouldn't be any more special (and fairly run of the mill) as any other traditionally animated film out there. Yeah, it's heretical to say it. But it's nice to see that some folks want that studio to push more, to go beyond the safe bounds they've made for themselves. Pixar needs to set its sights higher, and not rely so much on directors who rely on the workforce to create their pitch bibles for them. Maybe it's a symptom of a larger problem (American artists/animators with low expectations of themselves. The American art market seems to not foster Renaissance story tellers - someone who writes the screenplay, designs the characters, board the entire thing, and is hands-on with the film itself, etc). But whatever. Pixar either needs to admit that it follows formulas to meet their bottom-dollar demands (which is fine; they're a company) - or they need to really reconsider what an artist is, what film/story telling is, and to go for something that is going to outlive the CG anthropomorphic pigeon hole niche. Give us a Casablanca, Pixar - and don't fall back on gags, cute characters, typical story arcs, or new rendering technology to achieve it.
