You can't replace Glenn Ford. And Christian Bale is WAAAAYYYY too young to stand in for Van Heflin. And shooting in color kills the noir atmosphere that made the original so interesting. Expanding the story to involve extra characters and overstating character motivations through needless added dialog weakens the tense nature of the original. I'll pass.

I love your enthusiasm, but those 2 were not "westerns" in the traditional sense of the word.

here's the wiki word on it...not saying that's the LAST word, but just so you know what I mean...3:10 to Yuma certainly fits these criteria:

"Westerns are usually set in the Western United States during the period from about 1860 to the end of the so-called "Indian Wars" at Wounded Knee in 1890. Some westerns incorporate the American Civil War.

The genre has expanded its focus to include films about the Battle of the Alamo in 1836; and the Mexican Revolution as late as 1920. Additionally, the Western genre has been adapted to the historical and mythological circumstances of other countries, including Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Russia and even fictional space colonies.

An important characteristic of Westerns is the portrayal of modes of existence perceived as primitive and obsolete giving way to modern counterparts, usually through a symbolic confrontation between characters. In the early stages of the Western continuity, this manifests as a conflict between natives and settlers or cavalry. In later stages, ranchers, settlers and gunslingers may be threatened by the onset of the Industrial Revolution, the pressures exerted by big business, and the centralization of political power in urban centers. Whatever stage of history the Western is representing, the thrust is consistently towards the subordination of nature, the domination of collective over individual values, and the emergence of the modern state."

in the case of this film...the idea of justice...sacrifice of the individual for the common good, etc. etc.

man, I am a little drunk...just got a great career notice, and I'm celebrating in LA even though I know no one and have no social livfe. so I jsut made $10,000, and I'm as happy as can be, and the only people I have to share it with are some champagne and AICN. that's didnt' even make sense.

I love movies, and as much as I hate hollyood, I love it just as much...

as horibble as it sounds, I think of hollywwood as a gros uncle that molests me...but gives me an orgasm every time...

I've ben wriuting and directing shorts, trying to get something noticeds, and nothing has worked.

but thids script, written in between other ventures that I thought were more important, seems to have latched on...

so we'll see how it turns out.

bottom line...my apartment is tiny, and studio-ish, and costs 700 bucks a month. LA sucks. if something comes from this, great...but I'm not holding my disenfranchised breath...

WAY too much sturm and drang and wasted dialogue, just keep it quick, gives us the tease -- machismo, guns, big shootout, boom, we're out. Remember the Unforgiven trailer? Short, to the point, ends with "You just shot an unarmed man." "He should have armed himself." And that was it. Clint, Hackman, old west, bad-ass, showdown, done. Too much here, I say, too much, I'm bored. Outtie.

First off, badass trailer indeed. Secondly, I think people should recognize the great author of the short story this film is based on. the one and only Elmore Leonard. He's written the novels that have been the basis for a lot of great movies. The Big Bounce, Be Cool...umm actually scratch that...make it: Get shorty, Out of Sight, Jackie Brown, Hombre and of course, the original 3:10 to Yuma. The guys' a hell of a writer.

This movie does look badass. And I've been wanting to see the original since before I knew this one was coming out. I hadn't realized it was based on the work of Elmore Leonard. But yeah, I don't think there have been many good westerns lately. It's too late for me to think clearly right now, but I can't remember a good western since Unforgiven...I guess there's an argument for Tombstone, but that's about it.

i have a feeling you may be right... but remember how effective Henry Fonda was playing against type in Once Upon A Time In The West. He made a fucking terrifying villain. Too dusty. Too brown. But the trailer borrows some of the Man on Fire score, so someone's making good choices. I just don't know if great actors can make up for all the things I hate about the Western genre. It's not the reliance on formula and cliche`s, really. I love all the trappings of the heist movie genre.

I am not shitting you either, it was in Brompton Ralph (a tiny hamlet in Somerset) and his dad worked with my friend's dad. It was either '88 or'89 and he had not long done Empire Of The Sun. I really thought he was cool, not because he'd been in a movie, but because he was just cool, plain and simple. If I ever meet him again (unlikely as it is) I will ask him if he remembers shooting BB guns at rabbits with a couple of little shits!! Tryst me, he'll go down as one of the greatest of all time. He hasn't used the same accent twice as yet (untill the Dark Knight of course).

Usually I'm opposed to remakes, but I think this one will be appropriate. The original was decent, but I kept feeling they could push it further, but played it safe. Definetly a lot of room to explore in the story.

Hopefully something like this will expose the young'uns to a western as its a solid genre that has been forgotten and cliched.

usually, the key historical figures were all fairly young. So even though you might strive for authenticity, by casting actors of Bale's age you're actually going against history. War movies especially...many of the actors are in their late 20s early 30s yet most soldiers are much younger.
