I wonder if there's a scene where his quadriceps open up and he pulls out a big, automatic hand gun and plugs one into the dad on 'That 70's Show' while laying crushed under a demolished car... Hmmmmmm, I smell another Criterion Collection Edition that's going to rack up more on e-bay than 'Salo', which (by the way) is the Joker's favorite movie of all time.

I definetly noticed the cowl looked differnt, looks more sleeker and less bulky especially around the neck and the ears looks differnt...I cant tell for sure, but the clasps look to be gone as well YAY!!!! I definetly see like a new design scheme on like the legs and arms, looks. I personally wanted to see a more humanoid look to the bodysuit, so that criminial might not think, or at least immediatly that he is wearing armour, but I really like the cowl here and hopefully if I'm seeing this correctly the clasps from the BB suit are gone,

Turn your head and cough
by kafka07
Jun 14th, 2007
06:50:02 PM
I know the 'turns his head' thing seems like it should have been done a long time ago, but it's a process that has involved years of evolution since the first Batman in '89. I'm glad the rumors about a partly fabric suit were true, seems like a good idea, and probably more cool for the actor and stuntmen when worn, easier to move over all. Looks a bit strange but I dig it.

cause then, like Spidey, he'd have to have a billion reasons to remove his mask so you could see the actor's eyes. I'd rather have him in a mask and see his eyes and have effective acting, than fighting often with no mask for the sake of good acting.

I mean, seriously..we finally have someone who has some big ass muscles playing Batman, and they still feel the need to bulk him up with Latex. Anyway...now that i have vented, i do have to admit though, armor or not, that suit still looks totally badass

Most people completely missed the point of look & function of the Batmobile in Begins. The Tumbler was incredible and it's essentially the chassis (if you will) for the Batmobile(s) to come.

Since I'm one who tends to shy away from spoilers, I don't know the specifics. But I've heard that the Joker makes it necessary for Bats "modify" his car. Heh.

Reader the designer's comments is starting to remind me of when Schumacher took over and his design team was discossing their design changes to the series, and it only went downhill from there. And those lights he's standing on, very Schumacheresque. I know, it will probably all kick ass in the end, and I 'm looking forward to it. I never did like the cape pulled past the shoulder look, though. That look is just a cape, not the menacing cloak. I know, I bitching. I was expecting nipples. Bale does, overall, look pretty badass in the outfit. How long before he's driving Adam West's Batmobile?

Man, this has been my most anticipated movie since Batman Begins ended. That was such a nice beginning to a saga, and the mention of the Joker at the end had the entire audience cheering like mad. And all that Joker stuff had me worked up. I didn't think they would have to reinterpret such a classic icon like that, but what they've shown us so far is intriguing.

But geez, what the fuck is THIS? I know, I know, it's not all on the surface. I'm sure it will be a good movie. But FOR GOD'S SAKE why do they have to do this kind of preposterous shit every time? If it doesn't matter that the suit looks like a toy then why don't we just have him wear a pink gorilla costume? Maybe bring back the nipples? Would that be okay, as long as the story was strong?

Come on, man. Why can't upgrading mean IT LOOKS LIKE A FUCKING BATMAN COSTUME? I had faith in Chris Nolan, especially after the first one, and didn't think he was the kind of chump who wanted to use a fucking Batman and Robin style robot suit. Way to break our hearts, Nolan.

you are a crime fighter in Gotham City (or New York for that matter). You've got a homicidal clown with god knows how many henchmen shooting, stabbing, throwing acid, etc all at the same time. Basically they are trying to fuck you up. Also the cops are not exactly your friends. Later on you'll have to deal with a psycho ex-DA, and maybe a Cuban roid freak who basically wants to prove he's the better man. Are you going to fight these people in spandex? They'd find you dead in an alley shot, stabbed with the business end of a 9mm rammed up your ass. He needs something "substantial". And this is so far away from Shumacher's suits it's not even funny.

Jun 14th, 2007
07:13:24 PM
i'll admit i wasn't too excited about the suit before Batman Begins came out (I kinda liked that grey suit from the web-video where batman fought the predator and aliens). However, when I saw BB, it's my favorite superhero movie to date, and I'm a 100% Superman guy all the way. They did a great job explaining how the costume came to be...so, i'm sure they'll do the just as good again in this movie.
The Armored Look
by TheIronGiant
Jun 14th, 2007
07:13:36 PM
I'm hoping that what we're seeing here is a matter of things getting worse before they get any better, meaning Wayne has to make the suit even more protective as he's fighting more menacing villains and criminals. The whole "escalation" idea. Perhaps by the third film, he'll be so good at his job that he won't need the armor, and will finally break out the cloth suit now that he's perfected his methods and tools.

The new batsuit looks tough. I'm not entirely sure what I think about it. It's the rubber strips on the legs that bother me the most. I'm kind of worried about the hyper-armor look that was the "proto-type" suit in Batman Forever. I'd prefer a more organic look. Yet, I'm couldn't be more excited about the next summer.

that the suit would become more streamlined as the series went on, not more convoluted. It only makes sense. The one in the first film was a 'prototype' of sorts. The second version should look sleeker. Then again, I also like the idea of escalation, the idea that he has to keep upping his protection because the bad guys are getting more vicious. I guess either way works.

Yeah they'd walk a really fine line on an invisibility cloak. It would have to be a very rough thing, something that only fools the eye for a second or so, just enough time for Batman to get the jump on someone. If they did it Harry Potter style, all believability would be out the window.

I dont believe anyone, well at least I hope thier not, when we say cloth, is not just some type of fabric and that's it. I mean even in the comics, Batman just doesnt wear "spandex" he has armor and other proctive material under his clothing.. Me person ally just wanted something more organic looking, with protection underneath.. I kind of like the notion that to the criminals it doesnt appear he is wearing armour underneath, they see this man or whatever with this humanoid appearance but yet he is barely slowed if at all to thier attacks making him seem almost non human. This way they can clearly see its a man in armour.
In defense of fabric
by Bryan

08:19:59 PM
You're going to think I'm joking, but there is fabric that is bullet proof. It was developed by a Canadian company in conjunction with the US Army and weighs a little more than cotton but is 4 times as strong as kevlar. Scientists implant spider DNA in a fertilized goat egg to create a goat that is 1/70,000 spider. The milk of these goats is used to create a sort of silk that utilizes the strength of spider webs.

Silk Bio Steel, as it is called, is exactly the kind of technology that Bruce Wayne would be up on. It would allow him to move more freely, using his martial arts and acrobatics training. More importantly, it would make his bat suit portable, like the traditional comic book portrayal of Batman where he can quickly change into the costume when he's out in the city somewhere. It always makes me cringe to remember that scene in Batman Forever where he was at the circus and Two Face attacked, and he tried to reveal himself because changing into the costume would require driving back to the bat cave.

Some day, just once, I would like to see a traditional Batman costume on film. Burton's rubber armor conceit made sense, because he was trying to show how a guy like Michael Keaton would bulk himself up to look scary. Christian Bale doesn't need that, because he's Christian Bale. I wish they would do something more like what was done with Spider-man, where it is some sort of padded material but looks like his real body. The suit was the biggest drawback of Batman Begins. The explanation of it was great, but it still should've looked better. It's sad that in the best Batman movie to date I was happier to see him as Bruce Wayne so he wouldn't have to be wearing the costume. This time around I knew they wouldn't entirely re-invent it, but I did hope it would be sleeker, and certainly did not think they would make it worse by adding a bunch of Robocop machinery to it. It's too bad. (Everyone else seems to like it though.)

And I'm guessing that this is mobile. Do you think that maybe he'd rather be slightly less mobile and armored or fully mobile and not armored at all? Christ, it's not like he looked like he couldn't move in Begins; I'm guessing Bats is going to look even more fluid in this movie. The idea of a cloth costume is fucking ridiculous and anyone that thinks a billionaire with access to all that military hardware would wear one is a fucking moron. Go fuck a cat like Shia.

like Begins you only really saw the suit in closeups and at night. And even then he "cloaked" himself with the cape so you very rarely saw details anyway. I think it will be the same.
And I think in the Dead End Movie the grey suit looked good in long shots but up close not so much.
I think some people are more concerned about how the suit will look in a poster on their wall more than in the movie.

And the invisibilty thing i am sure its more of him being able to cover himself in the cape easier or some shit.

If you want to see your favorite comic heroes in skin-tight spandex, taking on villains that could be one-man army substitutes, go see one of the "shitty comic movies." This is wishful thinking obviously... but I could see Batman wear armoured gear when hes first starting out, like in Begins, because his skills aren't totally honed yet, so he relies on his tech more. Then as he gets older and wiser in the series, as he can become more confident and tech becomes better, he can change to a fabric suit. Cause after all, the Batman in the comics, which we rarely ever saw in the movies if ever, is not only super muscular and buff, but also extremely agile and acrobatic to a gymnast's level so he can do backflips and such. Hence he doesnt need armor since he pretty much dodges bullets, or at least outmanuevers most gunmen.

but I'm reserving judgement until I see it in action. Fingers crossed, though. Oh, and can we all agree to stop mentioning Batman and Robin. It was a horrible time in Batman history. I knew it was going to be bad when I listened to Joel Schumacher say he wanted Batman to be less moody. "Sure, his parents died. But, get over it!" That's a close approximation to what he said, anyway. Isn't the fun of Batman that he's a hero who's kinda fucked in the head because he was traumatized as a kid? I'm glad they decided to make it serious again, without the fantasy of Tim Burton (not that I don't like his Batman movies.) But, it's more interesting with that "realism" in Nolan's take, so that at some points you forget logic and start to think it might be possible. Well, minus the car driving on roof. Suggestion: lose the 65 yr. old smoker's voice, though. Everytime I hear Batman talk, I'm waiting for him to clear his throat and spit out a ball of mucus.

The one thing that would make the suit, this and all the others before ten times better, as many mentioned would be the inclusion of white eyes. I know that the whole acting part is the main reason its not there, but I think in the Daredevil movie he had lenses that could retract over the eyeholes if he turned this tiny thing on his mask (might not be DD actually but i swear i saw it somewhere). I think that would of made a great addition. When Batman isnt kicking ass and is talking to Gordon or what not, lens up. When hes about to jump some SOB or is staring down the joker, lens down!

...disbelief so much (this does eventually tie into the suit topic). As much as I appreciated the fact that they saved the franchise by re-inventing(?) it, I felt that they should have taken things back to an even more simplistic level in the first film. Raced by, were things that have always defined the bat as much more than muscles, gadgets, and a cool suit (although those can be cool things too). For an example, what about the fact that the Batman is supposed to become the "World's Greatest Detective"? Are they planning on showing how he eventually becomes so adept at medical triage (for himself and others)? Are they planning on showing him to be a superior intellect with a voracious appetite for knowledge? This was completely skipped in BB, and would have been useful in fleshing out his character (as opposed to using Katie Holmes for that). I was (am still) hoping that Nolan (meh) ups his game by taking the bat to a whole new adult (and badass) level. By showing why his formidability(???) comes not from a kevlar/nomex/composite (rubber)suit, but rather from the fact that not only is he learning to become the best hand-to-hand combatant in the world, and that he is (almost) always one step ahead of the enemy on the strategic end of things as well, is the direction this fanboy hopes they take the franchise. I would prefer a realistic (workmanlike) version of the suit. Or, failing that, a stylized version (think Darwin Cooke) would be welcome. This new suit looks to be a step in the wrong direction.

The only thing I didnt like was the fact that in BB Batmans emblem wasnt very visible, and it seems to be the case here. Instead the belt seems more like the centerpiece to the outfit. I reckon they could try putting some polish on it, or minimalizing the other parts of the suit in the future. I mean even the uniforms in the X-Men movies had farly well defined emblems. Maybe Nolan didnt feel that was realistic thing to have on battle armor but theres the most armored target excuse they push in the comics.

I like the cowl, and I like that it's sleeker, but the batsuit shouldn't look like a BMX bandit tracksuit, shouldn't highlight the armour... it makes Bats look too human and frail, as opposed to organic/monsterish and terrifying. Also it looks like a speciality suit, like one he would wear when riding the batcycle or something? I was hoping for a sleeker version of the one from BB with clasps removed and the cowl they have on this model, basically.

I agree with the people who say it looks way too much like robocop/iron man/tron/crappy batman toy etc. But then again, I thought Batman Begins was way overrated. (Not bad, just overrated.) Of course, I will probably still be in the theater watching this thing opening weekend regardless of whether the Batsuit looks like the one I've been hoping for or not.
"Realism" without losing character
by kevred

I like it. All the fiddly textures seemed a bit silly at first glance, but then I realized how trim it looks, how mobile it looks, how lean, and that's great. The big, bulky, molded look was always pretty stupid and made the acrobatic stuff implausible.

It also beats molded muscles, which always looked ridiculous. These shapes seem more plausible by vaguely suggesting muscle shapes, but still looking like they have another main purpose and the muscle similarity is incidental.

The result is something that looks more "realistic"--that is, more like how it would most likely be done in 'our' reality--but which also preserves the spirit and character of the classic Batman design. (Unlike, say, the generic, bland, lookalike X-Men jumpsuits--like leather versions of the Star Trek: TMP suits.)

So, good show! I like the sort of fantasy/realism look that this and Iron Man are showing so far. Hopefully it will start trickling down to the second-rate crap like FF.

Too early for speculation

I was just commenting on how the designer feels the need to add these 'touches' in his description that reminded me of the whole Schumacher designer's comments for Batman Forever. These little touches all add up to two things: nipples on the batsuit. I have full faith that Nolan is going to make another great Batman movie, nipples or no nipples.

Looking good! If you keep in mind that the way Batman is depicted in Nolan's films is that his suit is based on cutting-edge technology it makes sense that it would look something not so unfamiliar to this. Definitely better than just spandex. It doesn't look overly bulky which is good. Very modern, and the new cowl sounds like it'll be a huge improvement.

"the most irksome cast-related qualm remains Dr. Doom. McMahon again spends most of the movie in his normal form, and although Dr. Doom looks and behaves cooler than he did in the last film, he is still but a shadow of his comic book self. It doesn't help that the filmmakers have inexplicably opted not to alter McMahon's soft-spoken voice when he is in his Dr. Doom guise. His voice simply doesn't instill dread in either the characters or the audience. A voice that does work well here is Fishburne as the Silver Surfer, even if it is impossible not to think of The Matrix every time he speaks."

Rocked. It did. For a $30000 film it was incredible and I can't even fathom being talented enough to pull it off. However some things that look cool in a 5 min (don't quote me on time) film don't work. There's a long shot with a huge Tim McFarlane-ese cape that shrinks when he fighting joker then Alien then Predator. Also close up the suit just didn't look "great". I know, "with $180m instead of $30K who knows". Grey at night in the shadows would be a hindrance regardless of "canon". One talkbacker was more concerned about batman's development as a detective instead of "grey suit", "yellow Moon", "ears too long/short", etc. That's the meat instead of the potatoes.

makes sense to someone not familiat with the character.

All this talk calling it "fabric suit", "spandex suit", "chainmail armor suit" - Just call it what it is: Batman costume. We want a Batman movie with a Batman wearing the Batman costume. Just find a comic book from anywhere between 1939 and 1964 or so, whenever the "new look" was instituted. Grey tights, dark blue-black boots, gloves, trunks, cape and cowl, black chest emblem. And for some inexplicable reason, bright yellow utility belt. Just buy a comic and take it to the studio design department and say "Oh look, here's what we've been doing wrong: THIS is what Batman's costume looks like. What were we thinking?"

Seriously, if Dc eeds to counter program against "Iron Man" with a knight in armor movi, just go ahead and make the Metal men movie. heck, make "Steel 2" for all I care, just put Batman in a Batman costume.

that makes him change his suit, or after? My guess for the dramatic event is Joker spraying acid on Harvey Dent and Batman blocking, say, half of Harvey's face. The acid burns the suit resulting in a forced change. Suit looks OK. I'm hoping the exposed face area is a little squarer than in BB,it looks like it might be but it's hard to tell. Apparently when Milch had originally pitched the idea to HBO it was a completly different show than it is now. Anyways here the excerpt for you guys: "A couple of years ago HBO executives approached David Milch (the show's executive producer, head writer and creative visionary) with the idea of changing key elements in a series he'd pitched to them some time earlier. Milch's original idea involved a New York City junkie and street scammer whose life takes an upswing when he befriends a gentle stranger with mysterious powers. The network asked Milch to shift the story from NYC to a California surf town, and to make it about a family of legendary surfers." There it is. HBO forced Milch to morph his gritty NYC drug addict show into a anything but gritty Cali Surfing show. Fucking HBO!

All the clowns asking for a fabric suit need to phuck off right now. They dont get The Bat.The suit possibly looks dark grey, which is in check with the eventual change and development of the costume. The suit makes sense when we see that The Joker blows up his Tumbler and attempts to fuck him up bad. The suit is an act of neccesity through the crap going on around him. Also if he has to go without the car he going to feel vulnerable in the open being shot at.So it makes sense to have the best battle armour that Wayne Industries can buy. 10/10. Anyone who bitches about this cant call themself a true Batman fan. Get it in your head Nolan take is the closet we have had to the genuine comic continuity. If you dont like it go and watch some Fantastic Four and leave the Batman to the grown ups.

Batman Begins was okay but the stuff I've seen from The Dark Knight so far ain't encouraging. My complaint about Begins was that it was a good movie but it never really felt like the comic book Batman. Nolan's taking the material into a silly degree of realism with the Joker looking more like a pervert with scars and overly chunky Batsuits. Whatta we gotta do to see an Alex Ross style grey and leather suit, actually designed by Bruce Wayne? Give him back some mystique.

Part of me wishes that they had gone with a more organic theme to enhance the mythic nature of the Batman among the tales told by his eyewitnesses. Even so, this new suit almost sort of works for me. For some reason, it reminds me of the Punisher, complete with weapons strapped all over him. The cowl being detatched from the neck is not new. It was in BB, but I will agree that it looks more natural this time around. The color scheme seems appropriate for the character, with its clash of grays and blacks, but overrall it reminds me of Robocop. Someday, I hope that they remove the jaw opening and the eye holes, and give us a true dark knight.
Now, with regard to cape fear...

In BB, it was firmly established that the cape can instantly take any shape its manufacturer wants it to. Therefore, I would suspect that its secret is that it can instantly become a bullet-resistent pair of bat-like wings that spout out of nowhere and unfurl in front of Batman in the face of an oncoming storm of bullets.
As it was brought up above....

Years ago, when I was a teenager, I longed for a life of adventure and heroism. Long, long, long story short, I began to build my own super-suit. No joke. Seriously. You'd be surprised what you can order off the Web: bullet-proof vests, smoke pellets, black, full-length male leotards; handcuffs, mace, tazers, night-vision goggles, wall-scaling equipment, and NFL armor. Although I never actually was able to use it in real-world crime-fighting because the city that I lived in had no high skyscrapers or dark alleys, I ended up shelling out several hundred dollars. And what I had started to piece together looked a lot like the stuff we're now seeing in these new Bat films. So don't knock the armor: I was a real-life, would-be crime-fighter once, and there was no way that I would have done anything without having been as armored as possible.

It just took a whole lot of money and a lot of boredom. Anybody could do it if they wanted to. That's not to say there weren't a few really big snags that I ran into. For one, while you order bullet proof material for your torso, I never found any for the limbs or head. Actually, for the head, I ended up going with a paint ball mask strapped over a thin bicycle helmet. Then there were the football player's shoulder pads. They were to go on top of the bulletproof vest. The best that I could find for my limbs were xtreme sports armor. Making a utility belt proved to be a lot simpler than you would have thought. I basically just bought a bunch of variously sized camera pouches at Walmart and slid them onto a belt. The most frustrating thing I realized was how hard it is to find a decent pair of gloves that both protect you but still allow you to be able to tie a little knot in a rope. You might be wondering about guns. I did, too, but ultimately decided against them, just like Batman. I just wanted to have an adventure, not kill anybody. If anything, I wanted to save and rescue.

"I want to be Batman. That would be cool." It's another thing to actually go out and build your own suit with the full intention of actually going out and using it.

I still don't see the correlation to wearing a Batsuit and being a pussy. I call it being smart to protect yourself so that you can keep yourself alive and take down more badguys. Plus, ninjas always die in movies. They're always pussies. They are like the red shirts in Star Trek. They can't even beat up mutated turtles.

As long as the outline looks "Batman" to me. I just with the bodysuit was grey-ish so the chest emblem stood out more. One of the things that bugged me so much about the old one was that he couldn't turn his head. Remember the scene in Burton's where Vickie Vale's shoe falls in front of him on the steps & he looks up? I hate that. This at least still looks like it would be functional enough for a real wold Batman to get th ejob done. Nothing was wrong with the last one (other than it was another DAMN RUBBER SUIT). This one is much worse looking like a mix of Batman Returns rubber suit and some sort of X-Games meets Tron costume. What is wrong with the idea of Wayne-Tech coming up with bullet-proof cloth that isn't a freakin' version of a rubber suit? I'm sorry, outside of the ears, it doesn't look like Batman. Why are they trying to make it look less like Batman? Oh, I know, a stupid costume designer would rather do his own thing than think about what an ideal Batman costume would look like. This version is several steps backward. Rest assured, they'll ignore any negative feedback because we're just "fans". I hate this costume designer. I'm sick of people like him who just do what they want and don't give a rats ass about anything other than their opportunity to put their individuality on something classic.

DevilCat's got a good point...I understand why they bulked the suit up so much during the Burton/Schumacher era, because they never cast leads that had what you would expect to be a "Bat"-physique, but Bale is a lot more on par with how I'd expect Bats to look physically in real life - he's bulked up enough to easily pull of a cloth version. This suit - eh, I don't hate it, but I'd love to see a Frank Miller version one day.

by kafka07

Like it or not I guess it fits into the world Nolan has created. At least they're consistent. As for the fabric, the military has invented a snug fitting fabric that is bullet proof. They could have just used that, and maybe just a little bit of armor (if any). Although, all that extra armor would also help him in falls, crashes, burns, etc.

Seriously, Warner Bros and concept Artists everywhere need to stop this kind of shite. I can see the need for all of the armor plating, I really can. But that's all under the actual cloth suit in the comics and the cartoon. The filmed Batman's from the '90's to today have always been way too much fetishware, and not traditional enough. I like the idea that he can move his head around now. That's cool. Save this costume for "The Dark Night Returns" Frank Miller Film. And even then, only save it for the last fight with Superman. I always imagined the perfect Batman costume to be a mix of this material, with the body armour look, and a bit of the material they used with Spider-Man or Superman.

11:13:13 AM
I like it. It's a huge improvement over the BATMAN BEGINS suit. Sure, it may not be a grand slam...but it's still over the fence for a home run. I have to say that I REALLY LOVE the functionality. There's enough visual information there (besides the added text) that tells you that, YES, he really CAN fight in that...and he can kick your a$$ 'cause he's a tough S.O.B. Now, given that, I'm going to be really disappointed if Bale doesn't get an opportunity to showcase what he can do within some creative choreography (with just as creative cinematography). I'm curious how this design looks from the front, with the line of the silhouette from head to shoulders (as that's the tricky part). I figure that the neck piece just needs to be thicker (as it may already be) to better blend with the head...but as an artist, it's something that I'd have to figure out while going through the paces of design, in a more "hands on" position. But my congrats to the costume design team. It could be far worse (as has been proven), while it appears to be the most functional Bat-suit design yet. I hope that in future Batman films, they can build on the knowledge of all the Bat-suit costume interpretations...because no matter which direction you take the costume in terms of the design itself, it's good to know what does and doesn't work, both artistically and in functionality. With my own personal knowledge, I am curious what artistic touches could be added to this design...in the form of "subtle" (hardly shows) tattoo-like shapes on the protective pieces (even on the head-piece, like lines/shapes running from the back of the head to the forehead). That's a design element that would be lots of fun to play around with. --With this Bat-suit and with Bruce Wayne being in prime physical condition, I hope to see Batman in action like never before.

But the one disadvantage of Nolan's films is that he feels he needs to show us everything. He's shining a spotlight on Bruce Wayne's past, so he seems to feel the need to visually shine a spotlight on The Batman. I can count on one hand the number of times Burton showed Bats in full gear not cloaked in shadow. The first Nolan film alone requires the removal of both shoes. I don't want to see all the gadgetry and muscle-sculpting. We all know its there, we don't need to see it. That silhouette is the dog's bollocks.

O.K. THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID!
by Automaton Overlord
Jun 15th, 2007
12:13:11 PM
O.K. THIS NEEDS TO BE SAID! Haven't we all heard that half way through this movie Batman changes his suit? here is a theory no one has addressed so far; COULDN'T THIS BE THE SUIT HE STARTS THE MOVIE WITH? Here are some examples of what I'm thinking. 1. This movie doesn't come out for a whole year. I do not think, if changing the suit is a major plot point, we would be seeing the "final product version" so soon. also, It may appear so in a publicity photo, but this is not all that different than the one that is in Batman Begins. at least when compared to what we actualy see on screen. 2. Christian Bale can obviously make his body look like whatever he wants viz; The Machinist, American Psycho, Batman Begins. In an interview on NPR Terry Gross commended Bale on his body looking bulky and muscular in a practical way, as opposed to in a vanity driven ultra-toned way. Bale said that he was glad it came through that way and that it was his intention. Keep in mind that the theme of Batman Begins was Begining, and the theme of this one is escalation. I assume Bale's body will reflect this, and therefore be even more suited to a "clothy-er" costume. 3. The Batsuit featured above (while realisticly more practical) looks more armorish. This is exactly what would be nessesary to highlight the change to a clothy suit, if my theory proves true. 4. A lot of talk-backers have mentioned that armor is exactly what you would want to wear fighting criminals on the streets of Gotham, but check it out. Many of the villians in Batman represent aspects of Bruce Wayne's personality; Two-Face:his multiple personae--Penguin:his aristocratic background--Riddler:him as a detective(By the way, Nolan has already expressed an interest in this dynamic of the story with his Scarecrow/scary side of Batman stuff)and finaly, Joker:his insanity. seriously. Escalation being the new movie's theme, it seems more than appropriate that Batman would make the irrational choice, in the intrest of appearance, to adopt a more cloth-like suit. 5. This one is not really a factual point but, I believe in Nolan. I think every choice he made in "begins" is meant to be the "realistic" choice, which Batman slowly moves away from as he eventually changes from practical vigilante, full of revenge, into a sybol of justice.

I think it works. I like the mix of functionality and comic book design. It's perhaps a little too busy but I'd rather have that and a neck that can move than vice versa. Also I understand that this suit only comes in halfway through the film and will probably be motivated by Batman getting his ass handed to him. The lighting will probably mask some of the suit as well. Can't wait for this movie!

Maybe it's because Superman and spider man have super powers that give them super strength and invulnerability... Bullets bounce of superman's chest because his skin is pretty much armor, and apprently so is his costume when he wears it. Spidey isn't as strong but he's got spidey sense and his gymnastics don't allow for armor... though I believe he has worn armor in some escapades of his... Batman is just a human being, albeit the so called perfection of it in terms of body. So I suppose the mission dictates what he wears... and quite honestly, even if you're the strongest normal man in the world, you'd wear something to protect yourself from bullets, swords etc. not to forget he is a trained samurai/ninja and so lightweight armor for protection and hand to hand combat ability can be balanced efficiently. Batman can't dodge bullets in my opinion, he's got nothing on spiderman... that said, it'd be awesome if someone could make a movie on that batman/spidey crossover that featured the Joker and Carnage.

At least from that shot and the lighting, I don't like the cowl. Reminds me of that "Batman 100" or whatever that series was called with the old Batman in the future (no, not *Batman Beyond*). The chest armor also looks too robotic, kinda like from *Batman Returns* as another talkbacker said earlier. Yes, the spider-goat-better-than-kevlar threads would work, but even though that has been out in the public news since 2002, it is probably still unbelievable for a lot of the general public to accept. It would be cool to have fabric like that used in combination with a little bit of obvious body armor. I'd say this is a little too much armor. I would like to see a better view of the cape combined with the cowl, and there better be some bad-azz gauntlets on the arms. Perhaps that will better make up for the lameness in casting Heath Ledger over Christopher Eccleston for the role of The Joker...maybe.

Not sure actually... Also a bit apprehensive about the 'Bat-helmet'. From what I remember of Batman Begins, Bale had pretty much a full range of head/neck movement in that. I'll reserve judgement 'til I see the suit in action.

Sure, you can stare at it and over-analyze (gee, that's something new in a TB), but it's not TERRIBLE like some people are proclaiming. Yes, it's is a bit reminiscent of the Batman Returns suit, but maybe there's a reason why they keep reverting back to that design (functionality and the actors' movements, perhaps?). Besides, as long as the movie and characters are treated seriously and with respect, keep one thing in mind: IT'S BASED ON A COMIC BOOK. 'Nuff said.

How you are used to clinching your fists is force of habit. Why would he hold his hands like that? He was trying to look violent. Knuckle protection is irrelavent. If the gloves are flexible enough to open and close, fractures would be imminent. Try holding your fists like that. Does it seem like a good idea to punch something? Man, I feel like it's when those first publicity stills of Michael Keaton appeared in Newsweek in 1989 for Burton's Batman. Everyone - friends at school, guys at the comic book store - was ranting and raving about how cheesy and awful the rubber chest and stiff neckpiece looked. And you know what, when the film came out and we saw how everything looked when properly lit and filmed, it wasn't half bad. Not perfect, but not too bad. Despite all the added lines and stuff visible in the Entertainment Weekly pic, I'm betting the suit is going to look just fine onscreen. When I think about it, you barely got a look at all the suit detail in Batman Begins once the action got going, so I don't think these modifications will matter much.
Talkbackers and design

It never fails. Harry and friends post a trailer link to an effects film, no matter how sophisticated or photoreal, and somebody has to talk about bad CGI. Then they show the new designs for some film adaptation, and people are not only dumping on creative design work, they're making dire predictions for the whole film. Here's a massive clue for those in need of it: there is no such thing as a perfect film, a perfect design, a perfect special effect. At least, folks, we should compare things in context. For example, will somebody please consider that the Transformers in the cartoon benefit from the fact that the whole thing is animated, with nothing real to compare things to? Can't we look at things in a more sophisticated way, rather than insist dogmatically that material be translated with complete adherence from other media and artforms?

first off, i want nipples and not just little perky ones, i want some frickin pepperoni sized bad boys. second, the cape should grant him the ability to fly and no gliding from place to place doesnt count. he has to be able to fly upwards. the problem with batman and robin was that there wasnt enough upwards flying. and lastly, the suit should look exactly like spidermans.

Simpler is better. Too many details here. Another thing that I never see in the live action films much is Batman shrouding himself in his cape. A very gargoyle-like pose, especially in Mask of the Phantasm, works. I don't know if I like this idea of him having shrukens in his gauntlets, either. Less toys. Why not write action scenes where he uses his wits?

Just how many nay sayers about this movie there are. It also surprises me how many are trashing the suit off of one pic. Personally I like it and agree that it really isn't that much of a change from the original. I love the cowl and think it will work simply because it will be Bale inside the suit. Some scream for the classic blue and grey, guess what, the classic blue and grey is crap, that is why you see it rarely in the titles most artist depict it as being more black and grey which makes more sense since there are no blue bats maybe? It also never ceases to amaze me how many come to these boards thinking that they are elite board trolls but really offer nothing to the discussion or society as a whole for that matter. Carry on, I am looking forward to this one...I got faith in Nolan.

Y'know, I've heard that over and over again, but not once have I ever looked at a picture of Batman and thought, "What a neat-o bat!" I think that most people would agree that Batman more or less looks like a demonic knight of some sort unless he's gliding and seen from far away. By the way, are any of you familiar with the legend of Spring-heel Jack? He is, or was, one of the only gimick-driven villains in real history. In fact, just like Batman, he became a larger-than-life sensation, and rumors began to circulate around whether or not he was even human. As far as I'm aware, the last time that he or something like him was sighted was several years ago in New Delhi, India, during the "Monkey Man" craze, in which dozens and dozens of victims accused a phantasmic, robotic monkey with huge talons of attacking them in the night.

This may very well be the only costume change, since the Tim Burton flicks, that's worth a damn. Don't get me wrong, I loved the Batman Begins costume. But since it was supposed to be formed from various sources, it stands to reason that improvements would be made. I hope this is the "mid-flick change" costume, stemming from Bale having to tear away parts of his original uniform that's being eaten away by some "Joker Acid". Yeah, I know that's totally stolen from Predator...but it would be a nod towards "The Killing Joke." Can't wait for this one to come out, especially since it's sans-Robin. Granted, I wouldn't mind seeing a scene at the very end of TDK that hints something about the circus coming to town.

a fitted suit without looking stupid. Tobey is not some hulking guy but he looks adequately heroic in the suit, Bale is taller and more built than Tobey. It really would not be a problem. It's a choice by the filmmakers due to their realistic portrayal, that's all.

I like Batman Begins primarily for one reason - it was a great character study of Bruce Wayne. Bale is great fun to watch. The rest of the film could've used a fantasy injection, though. It had some great set pieces, but the villains needed to be more comic bookish, and I don't mean in a cheezy way, just in a wilder way.

in Hollywood. Faux-realism is in. A real cheat if you ask me. I don't want a fabric suit, I accept Bats would wear kevlar, but not all over his body, just enough to protect the vital areas. Then he would want maximum freedom to be able to use his body as a weapon. He relies on his skill that no one would be able to tag him. I also don't like the Joker being a cutter and not a dapper clown. It comes across as sadistic and not dangerous fun.

overall concept, just the delivery. It was an interesting approach more nuianced than "eco terrorist". But I would've liked Ra's to be Ra's The Demon's Head and not Ducard, which is yet another Batman character. I wanted the Laz pit (obsession with immortality), the crazy/sexy daughter, Ubu, all of that business. Neeson was way too low key to play a villain for a Batman movie, he's a classic hero type. If they wanted to make Ducard the Ubu character, that would've been fine. Also, the swordfight on the ice lake would've been cooler if they were shirtless. :)

I guess the whole quick cut thing didn't work (I think Nolan was putting us in the shoes of those who would actually confront the DK being disoriented and all) but it didn't kill it for me. Also the whole "detective" thing I figure that develops over time seeing as this is basically a "Year One" story.

Also anyone having problems with the suit (and the psychology) perhaps we can say 1939 batman was a 20th century antihero with early 20th century influences (the shadow, El Zorro, etc.). Nolan's batman is current if not slightly futuristic (DKR future backward?) and he has an entirely different mindset, approach, arsenal, etc.

And please stop comparing this in anyway to Returns, B&R, etc. Please?
Why are you pretending to be 3 different talkbackers?

Just wondering.

Anyway, yes, most people equate Spandex Batman with Adam West. And for good reason. But the fact of the matter is that not even the Batman in the comic books wears spandex; he wears a bullet proof fabric. And there are things in-between spandex and armor that later films could use, such as the material worn in the old Flash movie.

Also, with regard to the suit change midway through DK -- it is unlikely that getting sprayed with Joker acid will force him to make a new and more improved Batsuit, let alone one with less armor. (Wow! Acid! KEEN! Well, might as well lose the armor. Ah, yep! That did the trick! M'boys gotta breathe! BREATHE, m'boys, BREATHE!)

Moreover, he does not have just one suit; he has many, many, many of them. Do you have any idea how smelly he would be if he had to wear the same one, night after night? Let's be practical here.

I never knew that. Anyway, I found a pic. IMHO, this is the closest material to what the diehard Batman-must-wear-tights crowd will ever see on film: ww w.monitorduty. com/mdarchives/flashTV.j pg

That picture doesn't display the suit in all it crushed velvet goodness. I watched the show in college and bought the DVD set when it came out. I chuckle at the trickster hearing the BTAMS joker's voice. Cool stuff. The suit was good for a early 90's CBS show and 100 times better than the JLA Infamous live action pilot but this suites (or show) really doesn't age well. It's cool but not what we want to see in 2007 (or '08).
I agree.

I was just pointing out that the CBS Flash suit, in terms of material and appearance, comes closer to the canonical Batman costume than any other live-action costume yet known.

That having been said, I agree that the flexible armor look works better on film.

yeah...

I liked BB and realize it was not perfect (as this film probably won't) but they are "good" films. FF4 2 must be horrible unless every reviewer, human being is a comic geeks because evertbody agrees it shit. Geek and non-geek. They are just "bad" films. The only person I could see doing a better Batman film is John Milius.
Y'know, to be honest, I'd

Y'know, to be honest, I'd always wanted to see Batman brought to the big screen as a horror movie, with villains as the victims. As for F42, Harry apparently liked it. But that might just be due to his expectations having been so low.

drama and action. And for god sake get a writer of some sort of quality and not just a hack like Goyer. Oh and stop Batman killing or allowing people to be killed. I could forgive a rubber suit if it had all the rest in place. But I think I want for too much from a comic book film . . .still I can dream

I almost agree that Superman Returns was just as good (bad) as Superman III but probably closer to Quest for Peace.

Suit is OVERDESIGNED, too flashy, its a mistake, Nolan!

Armored protection is fair enough, but this design is unrealistic, those abs and legs look like the fetishist rubber-muscle mistakes of the older batmovies. The designer got carried away and made something more appropriate for a futuristic scifi movie. PLEASE DONT USE IT.
Please do use it...

Love it...let the nay sayers stay home...it is going to be a good flick. I trust Nolan. Begins was the best comic book adaption since Sin City.

I probably won't be posting much anymore, as plot points and turns from the movie are starting to stream onto the Web. I ruined SM3 for myself by reading the spoilerific Talkbacks here on AICN. But I won't allow that to happen again.
i hope its a test and that they listen to our opinions

OOh look, new Batsuit!

I to think the armour looks a bit too complex, but it'll mostly be in shadow so I can live with it.

As for the cowl...

...That is exactly what I have been waiting for since 1989...

...a BATMAN who can actualy pose and look menacing, a BATMAN who couldn't be beaten by someone running really quickly behind him before he had a chance to awkwardly turn his whole body.

I thought the worst bit in BB was when the Scarecrow set Bats on fire, he was supposed to be flailing around as you would on fire but instead he just wobbled about.

This really does look like he could move like BATMAN should...

...LIKE A FUCKING NINJA!

the worst thing was the five story drop in flames

where supermarch is, I think he got so much hatred he gave up the ghost for good.

I seem to remember me and BSB giving him a lot of shit on a TB he hadn't even posted on just in the assumption he would appear at some point, see people slagging him before he even got there and not bother posting at all.

The thing I love most about BB is the fact that there is such a long list of faults but it still remains brilliant and well loved by most people. As I keep saying, imagine how good the second one will be if Nolan addresses all the flaws (many of which could be put down to inexperiance)

By the way, look closer, I took it into Adobe and played with the constrast, Bale is holding his thumbs right...come on, get wise will ya? Bale did a large part of his own fight stunts in BB, I think he knows how to throw a punch...geeshh..

Nice work HenryJonesJr and I agree that has more of a classic look...but I think Nolan is headed in the right direction. I really don't think the new suit is that bad and I do think it is an improvement over the first one and the ones before it. Shrug...I like it. I also like what you did... But I think we can agree the pose is right =)

when bats fell while on fire he tried to make his cape rigid but only half of his cape did go rigid. Read this somewhere.
