If this takes the Surfer into space and the hell away from Earth. How about the Surfer getting into the middle of a 3-way war between the Sh'iar, Skrulls, and Kree with Mar-Vell, Super-Skrull, and the Sh'iar Imperial Guard involved. (Yeah right, like that would ever happen. It would cost 500 million dollars to depict...)

This Silver Surfer movie isn't even open for reviews, which means it's sucky, even for a bad movie. Why would they continue this crap? Seriously, who's connected to whom, I've love to understand it. Even the first FF looked so bad that I don't know anyone who even bothered to see it. And as much as I loved B5, JMS is a story writer, not a script writer. His dialog is only a small step above Lucas'. Having him as a producer or story consultant is a great idea however. But if he's to go anywhere, it should be to Lost. That's the Holllywood property that can most benefit from his expertise right now.

....on AICN's asses. Watch how Harry keeps his distance from this one. Sounds like a feel good - fight the good fight - sunshine story; right until Hollywood insiders and Studio suits start talking behind closed doors among themselves. The best thing that can happen right now for Harry and Co. is for the whole thing to die quite albeit quick natural death; otherwise, bye-bye early reviews and set-visits, and gift baskets for Hawold and his minions. As for Fox and this whole movie thing, the other thing that you daft AICNers seem to be forgetting is that they are now getting freebie publicity - like they needed it. They can always claim to have had nothing to do with Memflix losing his job - speaking of which - he`s damn well gauranteed of completely losing it now, since he had only been suspended before, and who else is going to want to touch that with a 10 foot pole after the stench from this goes down. Another fine example of movie geekdom's dorkish over-enthusiasm shooting itself in the foot.

The script has been highly touted around town so I gave it a read. Not as good as I was expecting. I could see Clint doing something cool with it, especially if Angelina stays attached to the lead, but I kept expecting it to get supernatural and it never did. It felt like a long, drawn-out episode of Law and Order: SVU. I think there's definitely a good story there and I like the idea of Clint making a period piece, but the script was definitely lacking in the thrills and chills department, and I didn't feel the lead character's grief over missing a child. Maybe my expectations were too high since the script is considered one of the best not-yet-produced scripts around town, but it didn't feel Clint-worthy to me. I'll hope for the best though.

Since he's actually worked on the comic. With all the crossover now between tv screenwriting and comics, it just makes sense that they would actually get writers from the comic actually involved in the movie. But outside of Frank Miller, this doesn't seem to be happening? Why the heck not? I'm sure Brian K. Vaughan would do some great work on a comic to film script, and I'd still love to see Joss' X3, or reboot with the Astonishing cast. Now I'm talking writing, not directing, just to be clear.

Mr Dark's Hyperbole - Last Word From Me
by Dominic-Vobiscum
Jun 14th, 2007
05:58:30 PM
I'm as prone to it as the next guy, but jesus fucking christ are you serious? Defending my first amendment rights? I don't know whether to laugh or just bow my head in shame that someone could actually believe that.

Do you really think he gave two shits about free speech when he sent in his reviews? He wanted to drive traffic to his website and be "FIRST!" That's all.

Let me set up a scenario for you.

Suppose Memflix had been smoking pot while working the booth. Not a big deal, right? Who cares? The managers all know, they don't care, he gets his job done. No big deal.

A new manager takes over the theater and catches him sparking up a spliff. Fires him on the spot.

Was the firing wrong because he'd smoked at least 100 joints in the booth before and no one said "boo"? Or was he doing something that HE KNEW was wrong all along and just took for granted that he was being allowed to get away with it?

He should have said, "Well that sucks that I got suspended, but I probably shouldn't have been sending in spoiler filled reviews to notoriously shady and unprofessional entertainment gossip sites".

And for that matter, why do we automatically assume that everything Memflix says is 100% factual and everything his theater and Fox say is 100% a lie? Isn't it far more likely that they are both conveniently leaving out details so their stories sound better?

Because you know what the most likely scenario is? It's the pot smoking one.

Memflix writes reviews and wants people to got to his website. He sends early reviews to AICN to make sure people know his name and go to his site. His boss knows, and either doesn't have a full understanding or just doesn't care. Fox says, "Hey...there's a bunch of early reviews being released and it's all coming from this theater. Let's not work with them anymore." And the theater goes, "Oh shit! We're gonna lose a lot of money! We gotta fire this guy and suck up to Fox to make sure we don't lose our screeners!" So they suspend/fire him as a way to prove to Fox that they "take this sort of thing seriously".

But now Memflix is portrayed as some sort of heroic victim. He's a poor little David against a big giant Goliath. And it's stupid. He got called on doing something he shouldn't have been doing. That's ALL!

And I don't even blame Memflix really. I blame idiots who look for any excuse to flip off corporations while still feeding their fat faces with every piece of junk that comes down the pike.

And I blame hypocrites like Moriarity who know fuck all about journalistic ethics, and who has remained CURIOUSLY FUCKING SILENT on this matter since lambasting Fox and making a BFD about this in the first place.

What's the matter Mori? Did you realize that you might have jeapordized your "writing" career with your outburst? Or might have hurt Harry's "producing" career?

There, I'm done. I have no delusions that I'll change anyone's mind anymore than anyone will change mine. It merely annoys me when people achieve success (as Memflix surely will now) through infamy and pity parties rather than actually working hard and holding one's self to some sort of standard of ethics and accountability and I felt like venting.

Memflix = Paris Hilton.

Memflix may not of been thnking about his first ammendment rights at the time he was writng said review.. But again I must ask you Dominic-Vobiscum what brings you to this site is it early reviews , leaked info, or just the talkbacks ..whatever it is chances are that it from some daring soul in the business who is taking a chance to give you what you seek.. I'm not even sure how it could be done, is there a way to make a convincing CGI Thanos? Anyhoo, that's the first thing I thought of when I read the part about looking for the older, X-Men audience. On-screen Thanos could be incredibly cool. Or horrific, if handled poorly.

grandaughter Nebula. The supporting characters in the Silver Surfer are more interesting than the Surfer. Not that that's a bad thing, they should just make an ensemble movie since after FF2 he will have freed himself from Galactus.

I was just thinking that, but I think it would be almost impossible to convince any studio to leave the story alone, and I don't think it would sell well with the public. One thing on my geek wish list is that I would love to see Infinity Gauntlet/War/Crusade done as an animated series.

Comic books and age demographics
by Chishu_Ryu

I'd agree that when comic books were first created back in the 30's, they were made for and marketed to kids and teenagers. But the comic book medium evolved over the years. Comic books developed different niche markets, especially beginning in the 50's. Romance comics were marketed to young women, Mickey Mouse comics for the young kids, and so forth. A prominent senator even attacked the comics industry for the "excessive" amount of "adult" material in comics at the time, such as murder and scantly clad women, which led to the creation of the comics code. Comics creators were aware of this new adult audience and slowly adapted without angering the feds. Marvel even titled one series "Amazing Adult Fantasy" for a short time before it became the intro for Spiderman. Comics slowly incorporated adult themes into their stories. In the Fantastic Four, there were still the intergalactic adventures and colorful costumes that appealed to kids, but there was also the family drama that appealed to adults, such as Sue Storm worrying over the safety of her child. Read the fanmail pages of any of those old Marvel comics and you'll see most of them written by adult readers. The old Silver Surfer series, Stan Lee's pride and joy, had a particular adult bent, as the Surfer lamented about humanity's inherent violence to one another, racial prejudice, poverty, nuclear armageddon, and other issues. Green Lantern/Green Arrow by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams took it even further by covering those issues, and even tackled drug abuse. Again, read the fan mail pages from those comics, and you'll find that they're reasoned and well thought out letters written by adult readers. Comic books in those days were as much for kids as were sci-fi adventure films, (like Forbidden Planet or Day the Earth Stood Still) or sci-fi novels and pulp magazines.

better not be shown in the Silver Surfer movie. They covered that in FF2. Having him on Earth a second time would be fucking L-A-M-E and a budget saving cop-out. Show us the Surfer exploring crazy worlds we've never seen. Battling creatures that even Giger would run from. The budget will have to be HUGE for it to work.
will Galactus actually be in the Surfer movie?

honestly, that was a cop out in the worst way. I enjoyed FF2, with the exception of Julian McMahon, who sucks ass, and the stupid cloud that should have been Galactus. I hope JMS can give us a better Galactus than a giant fart cloud. and Peter Travers is the worst critic in mainstream media, even if he's right. death to Rolling Stone Magazine!

So, right out of the CNN article, exactly what myself and others said- "there's somebody there working for (Malco) who is writing reviews in advance. That's all they said. No one asked us to do anything. We have been in business 95 years, and this is the first time anything like this happened. And this boy knew what he was doing was the wrong thing. ... He was in a position of trust and he violated that trust."

Stan Lee said this about co-creating the FF in 1961 (from Wikipedia)..."this once, I would do the type of story I mysef would enjoy reading...and the characters would the kind of characters I could relate to". I don't have my old comics collection on hand right now, but here's an excerpt of a fan letter from 1965 about Dr. Strange..."Hi! And the best to you from all points of the compass! The titanic and epic battles of the minds, and mystical occult battles of Dr. Strange and Baron Mordo are indeed exciting and awe-inspiring!" Here's a letter excerpt from a 1969 issue of FF... "Stan, through the use of both tragedy and comedy, has added emotions to characters who could easily be two-dimensional." Sorry, I don't think either of those two fans sounded like children. And how old are you, brobdingnag? You must be a child if you're on website and thread that's talking about a movie made for kids (FF), right? The truth is, fanboys have been on this planet since the first superhero was invented, since Lord of the Rings, since there's been the youthful spark in all of us that still craves for out-of-this-world fantastic adventures. Fanboys have never been just pre-teen kids with a comic book rolled up in their back pockets. They've been college students, men and women with families, doctors and lawyers, newstand owners, grandparents, and so on. In Japan, manga readers themselves are and have been of all ages. Stan Lee and Jack Kirby knew who they were writing for in 1961. Think it was just for kids? Why weren't there cute fuzzy talking animals walking around, too? Comics have always been written for everyone of all ages, just like sci-fi movies were for everyone. Fanboys up to this day haven't just been kids but adults who haven't given up on their imagination. I believe Frederico Fellini was also a comic book fanboy...

First, I never mentioned EC comics. Second, on who 60's comic books were marketed to. If you pick up any issue of Marvel Comics from the 60's, I have one in my hand, Strange Tales #136 (1964). you will find ads for an adult audience, as well as younglings. Let's see, page 9, an ad for an auto mechanics trade school. Page 14, sell Grit magazine. Page 25, an ad for a self hair trimmer, an ad soliciting for original songs and poetry, an ad on how to earn $200 in your spare time. On the inside back cover, an ad for a mail order U.S. Gov't Surplus store. If Marvel Comics at that time were marketed for kids, those ads seemly stupidly out of place, don't they? brobdingnag, you pwn in your dreams, friend... Please respond if you'd like another smackdown...
