Honestly, that criticism could be levelled at the script, too - clearly only a passing thought was given to making the dialogue and tech-speak believable. It's also the second film we've seen this week that stooped to using the old "My bad!" one-liner chestnut. Ick. And what was the other? Well, it begins with a 'T' and ends in 'ransformers'. We'll delve into that one another time.- WOW so i guess a robot is gonna accidently knock over a building and kill 500 people and say my bad.

I mean, let's face it with the consoles, we geeks usually wind up with all three, so if one has an Blu Ray player and you can add an HD-DVD player to the other perhaps we should just say let both formats live and if companies want to go exclusive then let them go exclusive if they want to do both, better for the consumer to have the choice. I think it's the only logical choice at this point with an ever groing install base I think it would make sense, then the only thing anyone is waiting on is a dual player. What do you think Harry? Is there room enough for both and Blu-Ray and HD camps should shake hands, or does there have to be a clear winner?

you monkeys, say Blu-ray wins out and over the next load of years HDDVD gets phased out...do you suddenly think all your HDDVD discs will suddenly stop working or summit?? ffs, jump on board with what ever format has the most movies you like and enjoy them in HD and then when prices for combo players come down, break open the wallet and buy one when there about $300 and hey presto you can now expand your existing movie collection. I honestly cant see why people are sitting on the fence about this and scared the one they will pick will lose, you'll still have the freaking movies to watch big deal there not all colour matched...

You're anyones, we've heard that about you. The point is, sweetie, that yes we could run out and buy a player now, spend a lot of money on discs for it over the next couple of years until the winner becomes obvious.....but what happens when, if we're on the losing side, they stop making that format of player, hmmm????? Because players that play both are a nice idea, and a few will be around, but sooner or later the only supported format will be the winner. (Blu Ray, if you haven't been paying attention.) And then the lucky companies get to sell all those very favourite dvd's to the unlucky punters who bought the losing format, only to have useless discs a few years down the line. It's not financially a good idea to continue making players for a dead format, or players that play the winner and the loser - the money is made on the discs.

Is that modern films will look stunning, old super 70mm will blow your socks off..BUT… the vast majority of the stuff we love cherish and watch isn’t going to improve, in fact more likely than not it will show up the limitations of the source material big style. With the best will in the world Carl Denholm will never look any better than he does in the KK SE DVD…. The source just isn’t that good. Star Trek The Bald Generation can’t match the film stock of the original series so it always going to look softer, muddier, HD-DVD or Blu-ray aint gonna help that and as for old television material recorded on video… forget it. For either of these two formats to succeed they’re going to have to break-out in the mainstream and that’s unlikely because for the average non-film fan they only JUST upgraded to DVD and as far as they’re concerned it’s good enough. The jump from DVD to HD just isn’t dramatic enough as the jump from VHS to DVD. Unless the PS3 brings it to a wider audience it chances of cracking the mainstream are slim, it’ll still be a viable format, loved and nurtured as laserdisc was not the industry upheaval that DVD was. Also the industry is taking real pains to make sure that the formats are NOT democratised as DVD has been. Region coding, we got around that little piece of nonsense and we can all burn our own discs…. Looks like they’re not going to let that happen again any time soon.

Toshiba has recently almost cut their projections for sales of HD/DVD players by almost half.(http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/ hi/business/6744335.stm)From 1.8 Million to 1 Million.Thats a hell of a shift in sales figures. As pointed out above the Spartacus HD/DVD is barely better than the Criterion version.I have recently been testing out both formats trying to decide which to plump for.The best demonstration i have had yet seen was the Pirates of the Caribbean movies on Blu Ray on a Panasonic Viera 42 Inch Plasma screen. They blew any HD/DVD or other Blu Ray discs i have seen totally away. The sound was fantastic to,had never heard sound or seen picture quality like it on a home theatre.

The BD "missing features" are to be included in the BD-Java spec 1.1 to be ratified in a few months or so. It's why some studios are replanning ther BD releases, to include the new features (Advance Mode BD Mastering, for crap like PiP) Also, Sony isn't addicted to Mpeg-2 (They've been pushing AVC, including an updated version of the codec. AVC is superior to VC-1). Studios have long since stopped using MPEG-2. Most if not all BD discs today use AVC or VC-1. Older MPEG2 titles will be reissued using AVC (for example, 5th Element will be getting a BD50/AVC/LPCM16/48 + Dolby TrueHD24/48 treatment).

HD-DVD is just a much better format at the moment in terms of content. Yes Blu Ray has more space to use, but they aren't using it at the moment. Not even close. But anyway I have friends who have Blu Ray by proxy of their PS3 but none of them have a HD set. I've got a HD projector like Harry and everytime someone sees a HD-DVD playing they are blown away. I'd like to see a Blu Ray on it but I'm not really bothered about buying a PS3 or spending £500 on a BR player because when the BRJ specs do hit version 1.1 (Oct 31st unless they move it AGAIN) the player will most likely be obsolete. I've got a friend who works in the DVD/HD-DVD/Blu Ray industry and BR is a mess behind the scenes. The business model they are using to make them is reminiscent of UMD's I was told... Remember them...

I was so stoked to get 5th Element on Blu-ray, one of my all-time favorite films, until I heard of the poor quality from MPEG-2. I was thinking it'd be 5 years before they'd come out with a "special edition" that would be worth purchasing. So how long until this new version comes out? It can't be soon enough. It's a pity Harry wasn't aware that Blu-ray releases haven't used MPEG-2 since just after the first wave of titles.

It's one of the worst DVD transfers of all time, and it only contains ridiculous Director's Cut of the film (Michael Mann sped up his Peckinpah-esque slow motion shoot-out at the end to make it look like the Keystone Cops). Now that I think of it, the only version of Last of the Mohicans available on DVD is the inferior director's cut also. I wonder if Michael Mann spends time with George Lucas?

this debate over which format comes out victorious is completely pointless. I've seen both of the formats and I honestly can't tell the difference between them. I just wish Harry would stop whoring himself out to Toshiba since he only mentions there HD-DVD player about 7 times an article. Blue Ray has that crisp image thaq makes you feel like your watching something at 10 billion resolution, HD-DVD feels like your watching film, it's soft and sharp in the right places. I personnaly prefer HD-DVD, but think Blu Ray will probably sell better in the long run. I'm not heavily investing in either format because DOWNLOADABLE HD is the way forward. This "war" is pointless.

Jesus, I thought everybody understood by now that the idiots at Sony have finally seen the light and all the new stuff is in either h264 or vc1. Yep, they're a bit behind the times with their interactivity (hence mastering on mpeg2 because that's how they were already setup and wanted to get the shit out the door, so to speak even though their spec allows for the same compression formats) but how far behind HD-DVD were they in releasing the format in the first place? They're still playing catchup in more ways than one. Both sides are patching with firmware updates along the way.

Harry, how can you keep crying poor when you keep making lists of all the discs you're buying, the fact that you have FOUR Macs and a coupla iPods, and are going to be getting A new laptop that will run you what - 2.5 to 3.5 GRAND? If you just dove into HD-DVD first on a whim because of a great price and followed it up by going on a spending spree, fine. If you're going to get a BD burner with your expensive new bit of kit, fine. Just don't post lamearse excuses. Gah.

Finally, what does Kevin Collins think of his 'buddy' Richard Doherty's comments and the fact that they crowed about their lead and then revised their player forecasts down to about half the next day? Yes yes O.K., I'm trolling there! Both camps shit me.

You know another reason this war sucks? Because we won't see any spectacular Criterion Hi-def goodness until it ends! Whoever is going to win, Hurry up with it, dammit!

Why hate him? How is this affecting YOU?! First off, you have NO BASIS to think he's being paid. And yes, I've read the digital bits article. They're all pro blu ray, and good for them n whatever. HARRY ISNT PRO ANYTHING! HE'S PRO MOVIES! It just happens hd dvd has a more friendly entry price point, so he was able to get it earlier. THE VERY FACT HE IS PLANNING ON A BLU RAY PURCHASE VOIDS YOUR ARGUMENT. I think I get so worked up cuz I am in the same position. I got hd dvd cuz it was more affordable, and while I cant afford a PS3 yet (which will be my blu ray player), I fully plan to buget for one later this year. Does that mean I should be fucking crucified too? You are monsters, all of you.

It would be sweet to join the HD/Blu Ray party for real but seriously why bother right now when the market hasn't decided who is going to win? For the record, I have such a hard time believing Harold isn't getting some type of kickback from Toshiba or at least got a free player as long as he pimped the name/make/model. Christ, he takes pains to spell out the particular MODEL he owns; who does that? That's like saying, "Uh oh, I'm getting a call; better answer my 65-A28 LG Cordless telephone" instead of "Uh oh, I'm getting a call; better answer my phone". I understand why he'd point it out once, the first time, but not multiple times since.

However, the viceral fanboy backlash is what really disgusts me.

stop being such a sell out whore, get a real blu ray player or a PS3 and see why blu ray kills HD-DVD in picture quality. Just admit you are getting kick backs from toshiba on this. Toshiba is acting pretty desperate by using this site and yourself as their whore soliciting dvd players. Cause there are quite a few blu ray discs coming out that you dont talk about that are good movies. HD-DVD uses crappy codecs, they have some off the wall ones that dont make the player work at all, which makes the player useless.

No matter what laptop you use or computer you use with a blu ray or HD-DVD player, it wont look as good if you bought a stand alone player with a good hi def tv. The electronics inside a computer cant compare to a stand alone player. Everything is done by software to produce a DVD or hi def signal to your lcd screen. So it wont even be a fair comparison when you match the two formats up. headgeek talks about not wanting to put the blu ray up yet, the hd dvds for the ones mentioned up above havent even come out yet, so how can you really say it they are good movies or transfers without seeing the discs yet. Its like me saying, Iron Man is a great movie, but its still filming and not even out yet.

If Harry is getting paid to endorse HD DVD, then Bill Hunt from The Digital Bits is definitely getting paid to endorse Blu-ray Disc. That guy (Bill) is shameless in his misleading bias I stopped going there a while ago. My opinion, they're both industry shills. And BTW, I have both HD DVD and Blu-ray players and I love it. They are both great formats. When I watch SD DVD now I think, "God, that looks like shit!"

....we're big douches for talking about something which annoys us....? Not like what you're doing at all, eh? The difference is, we're complaining about something that goes hand in hand with a word called integrity, something Harry is dsplaying very little of at the moment. The point is, Harry knows the films being released on both sides of the format or could find out very easily, both HD and BR. Not having a BR player doesn't mean he cant list their release, nor their special features as they are listed all over the place. He doesn't have to be able to say how many nose hairs he counted in John Hurt's nostrils for smegs sake - but by listing them he's proving he's a little bit more impartial and NOT schilling for HD, which unfortunately he obviously is. HD will lose the format war, and in another 5 to 10 years Blu Ray will become redundant too as everyone will be downloading for the most part. But right now, I'd like to see what's coming out on both sides of the format so I can come here and not feel I'm watching a commercial as opposed to reading a review.

The initial batch of Blu-Ray Discs released in early-mid 2006 used MPEG 2 on 25 gig discs and looked like crap. These included The Fifth Element, Hitch, XXX and some others. The BD studios corrected this quickly and are using either AVC or VC-1 these days on 50GB discs that always look as good or better than the best HD DVDs (POTC is the latest example)

I used to watch some of the stuff sometimes, but more often than not it is as boring as hell. The movie is what matters and it better have a great transfer. Most people I know don't watch them. Do you think the studios are killing themselves to get all this extra stuff on the discs when the majority of people don't care that they are there?

Easily the most disappointing title I've bought on the format. And my collection is approaching 90, so it had to be out quite a few other movies. There's virtually no noticable upgrade in video quality from the Criterion DVD. And no extras either. Lost In Translation on HD-DVD was another major disappointment from Universal, but at least you could detect an improvement in picture quality on that one. Not the case with Spartacus. And for the previous talkbacker who was mocking Harry for not being able to buy Bridge To Terabethia on HD-DVD, it is available in Europe. It'll cost more to import it, but HD-DVD players are region-free so it is technically available. That being said, I've preordered the Blu-ray version. :-)

1. Secret of Nihm: Family Fun Edition? HAAHAHAHA. That's a great, dark little film. Nnnot much "family fun" in there, since most people define "family fun" as, oh, a day at Sea World or something. 2. Harry, maybe it's because you were raised in a week-to-week income environment or something, but though I know you aren't super-rich, I find it difficult to believe that you can't afford a Blu-Ray. I'll let it slide if you're the one popping for the wedding (get a Blu-Ray drive for the lappy, Harry!!!) 3. I totally agree with you. I don't have the time or motivation to watch 3 different video commentaries, a music-only track, a text commentary, and a side-by-side workprint and also watch 10 hours of web-content behind the scenes footage. That stuffs all gravy. It's nice to have if you're in the industry or like to pretend you are and you're doing it for educational purposes. But frankly, if you've seen the extras for SW, LotR, and Matrix, there's no special effects documentary in the world that can offer up anything fascinating or surprising, and 80% of commentary tracks are boring and pointless. Give me a fantastic transfer, lossless 5.1 audio, one commentary, some trailers, and some deleted scenes and I'm good to go. Granted I'm not the average geek...

How hard it is for some of you to understand not being able to afford both formats right now. I've got 2 mortgages and 1 rental I pay for every month. 2 households of electricity, gas, cable, phone and internet. A wedding bordering on $50k. - That said, I managed to squeeze out $299 for a HD DVD player, but I can't even commit to HD cable at the moment, but fully intend to in the coming months. AND - I don't get paid by anyone to write this column - save for the money that I'll see in 3 months from the Amazon Associates program. And I haven't even been sent a review disc on a single HD DVD title from any of the supporting studios yet, though I'm supposed to be on those lists.

I know it's far sexier and intriguing to believe in conspiracies, than to believe me. But I'm totally shooting straight with you guys.

I'd pick up a Wii just for those games but, I too have no money for a Wii even if I managed to find one. Right now, as a consumer, I'm trying to help maintain a clear separation of powers. Apple for my computer/music-device, MS for my game-console, and Sony can handle my HD needs. I prefer the same this type of set-up with American government as well i.e. Democratic-President + Republican-Congress or Republican-President + Democratic-Congress. Some say gridlock, I say balance of power. And it seems to have worked OK for the last 25 years. Except for a couple spells of D+D in the early 90's and R+R recently. Both of which were near or total disasters. Damn, I've been rambling a lot on this site lately. Cheers. P.S. Have a great wedding HG Knowles!

Just sited an article that quotes a Microsoft dept. head as saying that MS ( the major HD DVD supporter ) would rather HD not be delivered on a disc in 5 to 10 years. They think Microsoft wants everyone to go with their download service. http://www.thedigitalbits.com/ mytwocentsa138.html#cliff Now what does that say about their intentions?

Interesting. Although taking Sony's word that it's more powerful is like taking MS's word that their operating system is the most advanced. Personally, think the 360 and the PS3 are comparable. Raw processing goes to the PS3, but the 360 has a better graphics card. It even out in the end, I think, except for the programming difficulties. I think MS was smart to stick with a Directx based system.

But unlike Toshiba, cough Microsoft cough, Apple won't be giving it to you fo frizzle. Just buy a PS3 and be happy with 1080p output if you have an appropriate tv or monitor to attach it to.

It uses VC-1 [Windows Media 9] and the standard H.264 MPEG-4 AVC. AVC, you know, the non-proprietary codec Microsoft won't let HD DVD use even though most of the hardware on the market will decode (but not that). So stop dragging out the criticism over MPEG-2. The argument is tired and outdated.

Cuz even if you LordMaster Sony wins, that doesn't mean my HDDVDS stop working. And when BestBuy starts selling off all the HDDVDS for supercheap to make shelf space for Blue Rays (in like 2009) I will pick them up for cheap and have them in just as great a format as BlueRay. So I get to enjoy 1080p now while you all sit it out waiting for Sony to give you a break and those 2 years will be sweet, but I will buy a Blue Ray just like you but for waaayyy cheap in 2009 and still have the enjoyment of HDDVDS. As of week ending 6/10/07 66/34 (BD/HD), Year to Date 67/33 (BD/HD), Since inception 59/41 (BD/HD). Last week stats: Week: 61/39 (BD/HD) Year: 67/33 (BD/HD) SI: (59/41) BD/HD (source: www.nxtbook.com) Blu-ray has sold 2/3 of all HD titles since inception. Blu-ray sales have actually INCREASED in the middle of the Toshiba sales blowout!(LOL). And just now, Toshiba cut its sales target for HD DVD players by 44 percent, from its previous estimate of 1.8 million unit sales to just 1 million (source cnet.com). Face it, they're practically giving them away, and they're STILL getting their asses handed to them by Blu-ray. Anyone check out Amazon.com comments for stuff like the Planet Earth HD-DVD? A lot of people bought it thinking it would play on their DVD players. Talk about "consumer familiarity" with the "DVD" brand backfiring big time. (LOLx2) I wonder what happens now that Blu-ray players are starting to fall in price (BDP-S300, now lists for $499, which will be had for less than that in the wild)...

Blockbuster to favor Blu-ray HD discs over DVD format By Gary Gentile / AP Business Writer Article Launched: 06/17/2007 02:40:24 PM MDT LOS ANGELES - Blockbuster Inc. will rent high-definition DVDs only in the Blu-ray format in 1,450 stores when it expands its high-def offerings next month, dealing a major blow to the rival HD DVD format. The move, being announced Monday, could be the first step in resolving a format war that has kept confused consumers from rushing to buy new DVD players until they can determine which format will dominate the market. Blockbuster has been renting both Blu-ray and HD DVD titles in 250 stores since late last year and found that consumers were choosing Blu-ray titles more than 70 percent of the time. "The consumers are sending us a message. I can't ignore what I'm seeing," Matthew Smith, senior vice president of merchandising at Blockbuster, told The Associated Press. Blockbuster will continue to rent HD DVD titles in the original 250 locations and online, the Dallas-based company said. The decision was helped in large part by the lopsided availability of titles in Blu-ray, Smith said. All major studios except one Advertisement are releasing films in Blu-ray, with several, including The Walt Disney Co., releasing exclusively in Blu-ray. Only Universal Studios, which is owned by General Electric Co., exclusively supports HD DVD. Warner Bros., a unit of Time Warner Inc., and Paramount Pictures, which is owned by Viacom Inc., release films in both formats. "When you walk into a store and see all this product available in Blu-ray and there is less available on HD DVD, I think the consumer gets that," Smith said. The rollout of Sony Corp.'s PlayStation 3 game console, which comes standard with a Blu-ray drive, also helped give the format momentum, Smith said. Blockbuster's decision, while significant on it's own, could boost Blu-ray even more if other retailers follow suit. "It will help shift the balance toward Blu-ray, clearly," said Richard Doherty, president of The Envisioneering Group, a research company. The North American HD DVD Promotional Group said Blockbuster's decision was shortsighted and skewed by the success of films released by Blu-ray studios in the first three months of the year. The group said HD DVD has since gained momentum, selling more players and popular titles such as "The 40-Year Old Virgin" and "The Matrix" trilogy. "I think trying to make a format decision using such a short time period is really not measuring what the consumer is saying," said Ken Graffeo, co-president of the group. The two formats have been battling it out since they both hit the market last year. Studios hope the high-definition discs, with their sharper picture and more room for interactive special features and games, will replace standard definition DVDs. The formats are incompatible and neither will play on standard DVD players, although standard DVDs can be viewed with either a Blu-ray or HD DVD player. The Blu-ray camp has been helped by the release of such huge hits as "Casino Royale," ''Pirates of the Caribbean" and "Spider-Man" coming out exclusively in its format. As the battle has unfolded, the price of the high-definition players needed to show the movies has plummeted. Toshiba Corp., the major supporter of HD DVD, is selling its player for $299 with a rebate, down from $499 when it first went on sale. Sony, which is pushing Blu-ray, recently slashed the price of its player by more than half to $499. The player retailed for $1,000 when it first was introduced.

Blockbuster decision - exclusively Blu-ray

Sounds like this could be the nail in the coffin for HD-DVD. I can see how Blockbuster would choose Blu-ray, not just because it's the more popular of the two formats but also because it is the more expensive one. Blockbuster would rather have people renting films than buying them. They make more money on rentals.

Blockbuster KNOWS they can get more Blu-ray rentals because they DID get more Blu-ray rentals! The split was 70/30. HD-DVD was just taking up space! I love the HD-DVD camp excuses... "Well, Blu-ray had more good titles available..." You know how you fix that? You release some killer titles, you morons! If you want to win the war you play to win! Maybe they already saw the writing on the wall and didn't want to incur the production costs for a dead format. Oh yeah, and they're "gaining momentum" with the Matrix trilogy. Was that the same Matrix trilogy that sold a paltry 13,000 units? I swear... how can you HD-DVD supporters stomach this sort of garbage being spoon fed to you? I mean, there's hyping your product, and then there's spitting in the face of your faithful customers. Refusing to face reality and just spouting out-and-out lies is downright insulting.

BD players may be a little more expensive, but the discs themselves are the same prices for the most part. Universal and Warner like to bring out their day-and-date releases as combo discs on the HD DVD side of things, which make the HD DVDs actually more expensive a lot of the time.

They have been renting both HD-DVD and Blu-ray online and in about 200 stores. It doesn't seem to be that they are just jumping into a decision here. Another thing people fail to realize that the majority of the money that Blockbuster makes is from NEW releases of NEW movies and not catalog titles. Blu-ray seems to have more recent movies abvailable than HD-DVD. I don't think many people are going to want to rent The Matrix on HD-DVD no matter how awesome it is. They have already seen it and probably don't really care. The Blu-ray of Primeval would, more than likely be more of a popular rental than The Matrix. You know it's true.

I do believe you're wrong on HD-DVD being superior. I don't either player but I will eventually (waiting for them to hit the $100-130 range). I have however seen both in action and Blu Ray is just as good HD-DVD and it will have shit loads of more titles over the next year. Right now Blu Ray titles are outselling HD-DVD titles. If Sony (or a third party company) could manage to get a player under $250 before Xmas it would be checkmate. And unless some of the Studio's change their minds look at the vast amount of films you will never see on HD-DVD for the foreseeable future. Take 20th Century Fox for instance. It supports Blu-Ray. So unless something drastic happens you won't be seeing any of the Star Wars films on HD-DVD. Look at all the films Sony owns including those under MGM. The only thing hurting Blu Ray right now is the price. If they can get the price of the players down the war will end rather quickly.

I don't really understand about the principle thing as I don't think it's unreasonable to bring out high def discs because 10 years for DVD is a outrageously long time for a technology these days and I don't think it's unfair to bring in new tech. Certainly ridiculous to 'take a stand' about it. You want LESS options?

Yes I'm well aware that it's only been mass market for about 7 of those, but don't you see the parallel (to the start of DVD) with early adopters taking up new tech while Joe Blow thinks there's no need? For that matter, the only actual new feature DVD had over laserdiscs was that the menus were animated. So why did we need DVD then? Sure the size but the point is that it was ostensibly an LD anyway and people wouldn't have TVs that could take advantage of the digital visuals for the best part of a decade. See what I'm sayin'? The E.A.s bring the price down so when the mass market's ready they get a better, cheaper product and the regular Joes can just ignore it in the meantime. See? Works out fine.

The other part is that why would you sit around for years AFTER something like HDTV comes out (and you'd be blind if you didn't see it has exploded in the last year) to give people something to play on it? Doesn't make much sense. Like the idiots who trash the new consoles because "we don't need it yet" who would be whingeing when they DO think they need it because nothing would have been developed!! Same with HD discs.

I didn't realize there were any average people were in this forum... I'm not claiming that HD-DVD will win. At the same time, I don't think that BD has come anywhere near winning this battle yet. Movie psychos are what I'm talking about here. You're right, Joe six pack doesn't care about region free, but it's a big deal to movie geeks like us. Anyway, none of this really matters. There was only ONE hd title released this week..only a single shot fired in what must be the lamest "war" I've ever seen.
HD DVD will have region codes next year, IF...

I don't know where you're seeing those prices.. Oh and most day-and-date HD DVD releases are in the combo format which DO cost $30+. So much for HD DVD being cheaper, huh..

Blockbuster's decision to support Blu-ray in all of its 1,450 stores is having a bigger impact than it seems. A tipster at an unnamed retailer tells us they've had more HD DVD player orders canceled over the last few days than they've seen over the entire life cycle. The kicker? All of them were canceled because of the Blockbuster announcement. Not only that, new sales of HD DVD players are nonexistent, with Blu-ray being the only things moving now. OUCH. from gizmondo.com

You're right - those snapper cases sure did/do suck. God I'm sick of having to rearrange the lot of them every time I get one out (as they're in their own shameful little section by themselves. HOW many years of us whingeing did it take 'til they finally listened? Bastards! :)

As far as the double-dip thing goes (that was a lot clearer to me this time), I just go to websites and read things like Widescreen Review and try to keep my ear to the ground as sometimes a site does get wind of a staggered release. Better than nothing. And I outsmarted Sony by never buying one of the 37 different releases of men in black. I can wait 'til high def for that one, especially as most studios have been mastering in high def for a couple of years now, so we all know they're coming...

It's got less space sure but even though I've been sticking up for blu-ray to be fair you're being incredibly simplistic about it. Why were PAL release laserdiscs with the superior (to NTSC) colour signal and extra 100 lines of rez inferior 9 times out of 10? Mastering and quality control. Also things like which compression codec to use makes a difference.

Harry got conned by the HD-DVD guy (gee, why do you THINK he paid him a friendly and strangely well-timed visit? Hmmmm...) because Sony have long since stopped using mpeg 2 and as I said were using it to catch up as their mastering tools were based on it, even though vc1 and the superior avc h264 were available to them since the start. Also long since passed is the initial trouble they were having with 50gig limits so for a while there yes it was possible that HD-DVD had LESS compression. Not ever again, but you see the point. It's also only recently that Blu-ray has gone all out with max bitrates/less compression with the Pirates movies taking up a ton of the 50 gig limit. But still there's mastering and telecine which means there will be good and bad transfers on both sides, as with good old DVD.

It did take a couple of years for DVD to get the hang of intelligent compression, toning down edge enhancement and so on, and God knows there is still the odd artifact-fest (or 'articles' as Harry likes to call 'em). So yes HD-DVD actually CAN look better similarities and disparities notwithstanding.

As for special features, yes people obviously give a crap or the market would never had gone to the extra expense for the last decade. Why spend MORE money to make the things (although what most people don't know is that many of the early and not-so early extras, commentaries & docos were quietly swiped from Laser) when you 'don't have to'? It doesn't make sense considering the greed of all involved.

Also, yes it seems that 99% of the people who post on this site are EXACTLY the sort of audience that loves special features. Duh. So here at least yes you're pretty much the only one. And BTW where exactly is the Ludovico Technique on the disc that MAKES you watch the extras against your will? IGNORE them if they upset you that much! " I don't want the details revealed" - so DON'T WATCH them, dummkopf! You act like someone's forcing you to - like the people that think they're being made to buy all their DVDs again. Fair enough if you wish everything was 'superbit' but the moronic point about "Doesn't that kind of ruin" everything is as un-thought out and naive as saying musicians don't appreciate music anymore because they learn all the technical aspects of how to play their instruments, taking away the 'mystery'. WTF is wrong with enjoying a film on BOTH levels??!

Dummkopf.

Because most Blu-Ray releases are encoded with an inferior codec. Plus, if you buy a Blu-Ray machine, you will pay more than for an HD-DVD. And don't forget, Blu-Ray still is an unfinished product. Obvioulsy Harry did the right choice with HD-DVD.

FALSE. Most if not all Blu-ray releases are now encoded in VC-1 or AVC. Warner, for example, uses the same codecs on their BD/HD releases. Studios dropped MPEG2 as soon as AVC was available to them. Toshiba slashed sales targets by 44% (from 1.8 million to 1 million) and BD sales account for 2/3 of the HD movie market. Oh and Starz (Anchor Bay) just went Blu-ray exclusive, adding to Disney/BuenaVista/FOX/MGM/Lion sgate/Sony Pictures. Yeah, real nice choice.

Try reading some of the other posts. Kane - as others have already pointed out, both you and Harry are idiots for falling for the 'inferior' (you all still love it on regular DVD) codec mpeg2 thing.

Like Chrighton says they're pretty much always using AVC and VC1 now, but he was wrong in saying "as soon as AVC was available to them". No, the main reason as I stated before was that it had more to do with Sony's mastering software being based on and optimised for mpeg2 (which makes sense considering regular DVD) and trying to pull a fast one in getting up to speed quickly with the amount of titles they got out the door to catch up with HD-DVD.

Now this has much less to do with good picture quality as much as efficiency. Yes mpeg2 is inferior in that to get the SAME picture quality you need a much higher bitrate and use a lot more disc space than say, AVC. Which makes sense seeing as AVC is ALSO KNOWN as the Apple-developed h264, which is ALSO known as mpeg4 part 10. Funny that.

Neither of you seem to be aware that the video specs for BOTH formats are the SAME (which sort of makes the 'available to them' thing a bit incorrect). So even though Blu-ray CAN absolutely look better than HD-DVD due to more disc-space/less compression, WHY can HD-DVD still look better (even if you'd think the same codec would mean the same info for both formats)? - Quality control and telecine/transfer. As it's always been.

Comprendé?

Blu-Ray will be a PS3-only format a la UMD

I didn't know it was possible to shit this much Blu...again. Two questions: 1. How many people have a standalone Blu-Ray player that's NOT a PS3? 2. Which format is going to be $199 over the Holidays? Sony's loss leader doesn't guarantee a Blu win by a long shot. Hardware is 5:1 Blu (including PS3) yet software is just 2:1 Blu. Extrapolate what happens when HD DVD sells a million $199 players over the holidays. One more thing I'll reiterate- Blu-ray was concieved as a storage format to accomodate MPEG2 encoded 1080p high def and PCM lossless audio, necessitating 50G of capacity. Enter VC-1, AVC, Dolby TrueHD, and DTS HD MA and, oh my, suddenly a movie like 300 with reference level HD video and lossless sound and a shitload of extras fits on a 30gig disc just fine. If you don't own a PS3, there's nothing compelling about paying double the price for Blu-Ray. BR has one advantage- studio support, and it's a house of cards that can collapse at any moment. Flame on gamerz!
