They put pressure on Ron Moore to end Battlestar Galactica early to make way for THIS? Have they actually watched their programming choices lately? They should have locked up BSG for three more seasons instead of greenlighting a Flash Gordon series no one wanted to see. Or maybe develop a series that takes place in the DUNE universe. Or finance another Star Trek series. Do something that SCi Fi fans actually WANT to watch.

Anyone else not seein any kind of "wow" factor here? I mean - the guy who plays Flash is best known as playing Lana's clueless boyfriend on Smallville. Not exactly a man's man a la Flash. Ming is Blonde? Give me a break. Ming should be bald at the very least. The guy is the precursor to almost all sci-fi "villains" If ever there was a "muah hahahah" type of sinister evil twisted fuck - this guy should be it. He shouldnt be thinking "well im not such a bad guy after all". He should be thinking "The next motherfucker who speaks up gets disintergrated - and theres nothing wrong with that." Sigh. So far, color me underwhelmed.

...hits the screen, but this is indeed doomed. If it makes it's way out of the first season I'll be extremely surprised. Ming's a blond Canadian, eh? Bad, bad idea. Fine to move away from the overt racist overtones of previous incarnations, although frankly Sydow's version was definative, but to the point he's a generic Canamerican is too much of a stretch for me with this source material. Loved the original serials, have loved some of the books, dearly love the flawed but genius 80's incarnation. I was horrifed while this was linked to Sommers, terrified when it was linked to Conran. Now I'm just resigned that the latest retelling of Flash is going to be Smallville: The Space Years. Utter bollocks to that.

I'm going to keep an open mind with this property. At least Ming didn't morph into a planet-eating cloud or become a woman. Wait a sec. The memory of that evil empress of Draconia with the Buck Rogers fixation just came to mind. Hmmm. Funny, she was certainly more attactive than the Draconians from the Whoniverse.

This series will be Earth-based!
by Wormie
Jun 13th, 2007
05:55:18 PM
Executive producer Peter Hume told SFX magazine that this show will be "relevant and not stupid." He also said that Sci-Fi wanted the show to be "Earth-based" Yes, they want Flash Gordon to be Earth-based (i.e. cheap). Hume also thinks that the show will be realistic because it involves rifts that connect dimensions rather than space travel. Apparently, some boffins in Switzerland are doing work right now that could open up such a rift in real life. Obviously, a property like Flash Gordon needs to be done as a big-budget movie, and I would trust Stephen Sommers to turn in something watchable more than the hacks involved in this show.

I Love Dresden, Farscape, Battlescar Galactica.

Eureka, and Stargate: Atlantis, are mildly watchable, as were First Wave and the Invisible Man.

Painkiller Jane is so booring I have nicknamed it Pain"filler" Jane, because it's only filling the time slot until something better, or maybe worse comes along

Flash Gorden.... well shux, boss, why don't we rape buck gordon while we're at it?

The series I would love to see modernized by Sci-Fi, would be a new "Planet of the Apes" tv series, and starring Nathan Fillion as one of the astronauts, have Joss Whedon work together with Ron Moore, and Tim Minear.

IT COULD BE ABSOLUTELY BRILLIANT

Ming the (fucking clue is in the name) Merciless is described as being like Tony Blair. At least in the draft I read. No thanks. Why not just go off and write your own Sci Fi show if you have no interest in actually giving us some Flash. Flash was a bloody triathalon star (such a thing?) as well, but I think they changed him back to a quarterback. It may not be kitsch, be it didn't seem much fun. Flash is given some weak angst because his dad disappeared in a wormhole when he was a baby (no rocket ships guys, just some feeble parallel dimension bidness re. Mongo). Whatever, it could be fun. But I'd rather have the tone of the movie, but with decent vis effects.

TDF started off a little rocky, but started finding its groove about halfway in when they began emphasizing Dresden's magical abilities more. Bob is one of the best supporting characters on TV right now, even if he's basically "Ghost Alfred" to Dresden's Bruce Wayne. The banter between Murphy and Dresden picked up in later episodes as well, so hopefully we won't be seeing them hook up romantically anytime soon. (I'm looking at you, MOONLIGHTING and LOIS & CLARK!)

Battlestar Galactica was still essentially the same show, only darker and more political (the way the original show was meant to be, until it got fucked in the ear by network hacks). Is a solid, entertaining show. Rodney, the resident megalomanic, is one of the most love to hate characters to come along in ages. Their recent episode with the hollowed out moon and crash landing of a space shuttle was one of the best written and executed SCIFI stories I have seen in years with incredible CGI. It has its problems (e.g. the Ancient's technology seem too readily understandable and accessible) but overall its a solid SCIFI experience.

...Figures. It started slowly, but strengthened with each episode as they added in more of the mythology from the books (not fantastic writing, but good, solid reads, and entertaining as hell). I guess if the budget isn't basement-level and there's no cheesy giant cardboard spiders or bad-CGI snakes, Sci-Fi's not interested. Remember when they were doing Taken and other cutting edge stuff? Too bad they were bought out by people who have the opinion that, "It's only science fiction, doesn't matter how lousy it it, the nerds will eat it up!" Or, Ming is really Flash's dad or something lame like that? Flash is the Universal Savior like the Paul Muwadeeb or something. With Sci-Fi, this will either go to pot out of the gate, or got to pot in season 2.

He was Mongonian. It's like saying that Vulcans look too Asian, so we're going to reimagine them to look like Swedes.

I expect something akin to that insipid Lone Ranger TV series they tried a couple years ago. An OC version of pretty boy Flash Gordon is stupid.

Never done this before, but in the hope that someone involved in the show will read this, here are six ways to succeed with Flash Gordon. 1/ Aim it at kids (6-12 year olds). If it contains some good FX and a few hot girls in Mongo couture then us older geeks will lap it up too. 2/ Make Ming an absolute 'Merciless' villain and Flash a true-hearted hero. 3/Run the season as an ongoing story in the manner of Lost. 4/ Have every episode finish with a cliffhanger. 5/ Get copies of the old Buster Crabbe Flash Gordon serialisation to every writer and don't be afraid to poach. 6/ Keep everything as close to 'classic childrens sci-fi' as possible, that means laser guns, spaceships, swords, and monsters. Hope this little lot helps...

Von Balk, the Grand Master of the Teutonic Knights in Sergei Eisenstein's "ALEXANDER NEVSKY", maybe that would be an acceptably Nordic re-imagining of the Mongolian-appearing Ming, eh?

All of my favorite villains are being destroyed before my very eyes. And no rocket ship? I hope not. Say what you will about the 80's movie - but at least they nailed the production design. The Flash Gordon rockets are ICONIC. By the way folks, ORIENTAL refers to rugs and furniture, ASIAN refers to people.

Just checked out Dictionary.com. Actually it's not incorrect to use Oriental in reference to a person from the East, it's just considered offensive by some.

...on DVD at the very least. I still haven't seen some season 1 eps. Bring back G vs. E while you're at it. I freakin' loved those shows. Sci-Fi has a long history of canceling shows too early (Stargate aside which was a Showtime show really). So I tend not to watch their new ones anymore. I might check out Flash, but it isn't sounding too encouraging right now. Also, aren't all of these Vancouver shows going to start getting in each other's frame as they shoot? They all look the same to me.

"Battlestar Galactica was still essentially the same show, only darker and more political" - are you freakin' kidding me? I can't imagine the shows being any more different, stylistically, tonally, design-wise (sure there are a few callbacks with the vipers and such, but still), theme-wise. The only other similarities are a few character names and the fact that the Cylons are the enemy. Everything else about it is different.

Once again these so called creative types just don't get it. FLASH GORDON was easy. Fantasy, sexy gals, bad ass villian, wild creatures, rocket ships, laser guns, ROCKETSHIPS. Now we get SLIDERS GORDON with his Flash mobile. Believe me there are images and info already on the Entertainment weekly site about this so-called show. Yes no one should pre-judge a show, but hey I am going to from what I am seeing and reading. Hey I thought while fun, the early 80's film was still not all the way getting all the elements correct. Set it in the 30's keep the retro/deco whacky designs! Gee as uneven as SKY CAPTAIN was that may be as close to a FLASH GORDON feel creation that we will get. Heck even the Flimation cartoon had it right. If this bombs hard it will be quite a while till there is a FLASH GORDON done right. Heck after BSG leaves there is not much going on at SCIFI. I just don't get it why they take all these properties and then proceed to tear out their guts. They just never get it oh well it is just a show in the end.
Frell you SciFi! Ya cheap bastahds.

Farscape was as good a reimagining of Flash Gordon or Buck Rogers as there will ever be. Nothing on that cheap-o channel will ever be as good. That show looked great, had incredible action and heart, freely mixed hilarious camp with real pathos, and managed to pay homage to countless classics of the genre while still being completely original. I doubt there will ever be a hero-villain dynamic in a SciFi TV show as nuanced as the one between Chriton, Scorpius, and Harvey (Scorpius' neural clone), and nearly all of the relationships on that show were as rich. Character-, action-, and humor-wise, I think Firely was just as good, but couldn't compare to the fantastic design of Farscape. No, the SciFi Channel has indeed shot it's wad, and few shall mourn its ultimate demise.

If they're such pussies about the ethnicity (and excuse me but his daughter Aura turned out good so it's not like there ould be no good "Asian-looking" people on Mongo), why didn't they get HIM?!! A fucking blonde Ming? FUCK! This is the make it or break it part of the whole thing. Flash Gordon is nothing without Ming. Getting him wrong is like getting Darth Vader wrong in Star Wars. But then as some people have pointed out, current creative powers are idiots with villains, hence ruining Dr. Doom and Galactus. This is a terrible age for Sci-Fi villainry.

and heard from the set, the show is really bad. So way off from what FLASH GORDON is that the crew is already looking for their next gig. The scripts are being ripped apart by the very people who are filming the stuff. I just think that's terrible. One would think the powers that be would know better than to say "hey, we're making Flash Gordon" and then royally fuck it up the ass. Apparently it's not even in the realm of "bad enough to watch for a few laughs". Shame on them. I also heard Flash isn't even a football player. At least the 80's movie got that right. Stupid stupid stupid. Cancel Flash and bring back BSG!!!!

The Lost Room miniseries was the best thing besides BG that Sci Fi has put on the air all year. It should have been expanded into a weekly series.
