Beltrami is good, but Elfman is exceptional. Not that I don't like Beltrami, he's just more of an atmospherics kinda guy than a melodic one, and I consider Elfman a better choice for this kind of project. So far, this is looking like a possible improvement on an already solid original. Thanks for the movies, Del Toro!
A GREAT choice!

From BATMAN to DARKMAN to MEN IN BLACK to SPIDEY to HULK and now HELLBOY--- Danny Elfman's sure is becoming the go-to composer for big screen comic book adaptations!

Nice elements for him to work off from: action scenes with Big Red, the emotional beats with Broom and Liz, the mythological Faery setting--- can't wait to hear the themes and motifs he'll come up for this one...

I'm surprised

I can't figure Elfman out. He's one of the most sought after film composers; he has the luxury of being able pick his projects. So after shirking off Spiderman 3 I thought he was done with the superhero flicks. But he chooses to score a sequel to a box office underacheiver. Very curious.

As you point out, he has the luxury to pick his projects. Sounds to me like he's doing stuff he wants to do rather than just all the crap he gets offered.

I'm an huge Elfman fan, and I liked Hellboy, so I'm very happy with this annoucement. Its just that Elfman's last couple of projects (Charlotte's Web and Meet the Robinsons) made me think he was trying to distance himself for his stereotypical dark fantasy jobs.

I fooking love Hellboy, I am just a little pissed off that it has taken em like 6 years to make part 2. Maybe that is the plan, that way we are eager for it and not tired of it. Pan´s Laby was great, but I want big red.

Unless this is the movie that's going to shake Elfman out of his slump. Everything from him nowadays is either a retrend of his late 80's work or just bland and boring. Hopefully he'll stick to some of the themes already laid out from the first movie.

I've never been a big fan of Elfman. His scores fit Tim Burton's visuals (Big, bold and dark). But everytime I hear he is a composer for a new comic movie, I think, why not simply borrow the score from any other of the movies he composed for. How many John Williams themes can you hum? Exactly. let somebody else give it a try.

Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, Beetlejuice, Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, Edward Scissorhands, The Simpsons and I quite like his scores for Frighteners, Mars Attacks and Scrooged, although those are less hummable.

I think him on this project is amazing, but I do admit I was really, really let down by his Spider-Man scores. We haven't had a great superhero theme since his Batman score. X-MEN and SPIDER-MAN all use mood music instead of bombastic, recognizable scores.

This is really exciting news. I wonder if Elfman will keep Beltrami's main theme? That was my favorite cue. Probably not though, huh. Actually, has there ever been an instance where Elfman has taken over for someone else on a sequel and kept the previous themes? Anyone know?

...but this is not a good idea. I can't imagine what happened between Beltrami and Del Toro, but the score for the first movie was fantastic. So many terrific themes and fine orchestrations.

Who would I have picked? If not Beltrami...Kevin Manthei.
a) He's a former associate of Beltrami (the SCREAM trilogy)
b) Given the fantastic work he's done in animation (his "Invader Zim" scores are phenomenal), he is long overdue a break in features.

The first Hellboy score music is still the only Beltrami music I dig a lot. I even love the fact that they use Hellboy's theme in the animated movies they've released... so hopefully Elfman doesn't decide to change that up.

No one can deny that Elfman is a great composer. His original Batman score is right up there with William's Superman, but I think he's done one too many comic book movies and he's started recycling his sounds. Beltrami's work on Hellboy was just unbelievable. His best yet, in my opinion.

I will say this though, as far as comic book heroes that Elfman should compose for - this is actually a great one. One that his personality fits. But please, after this one, stop giving this guy comic book movies. Superheroes should have an anthem not some bombastic, non-descript score. I remember some of my favorite actions heroes from Superman, Indiana Jones, Starwars, and I could hum all their themes when I was little (and even now). When my kid pretend to be spiderman or hulk, he isn't humming the tunes. That's a shame.

I can't think of any sequels Elfman took over. I guess as close as you can get to this would be the Planet of the Apes remake. The orginal had the watershed score by Jerry Goldsmith. Elfman didn't live up to that, but to be fair, I don't know if anyone could have.

you will note that almost all of the movies you listed are movies he scored for Tim Burton whom his scores are often right for the over the top and often strange visuals. It's not that his music is bad it's just that little kids aren't running around singing their favorite superhero anthems as their playing. And so far, our modern composers just are stepping up to the plate. Even John Otteman? who scored X-Men 2 and Superman Returns. He provided some great scores that served the movies well but nothing truly sticks in the mind. In Superman Returns he used the old Superman score, but he only incorporated it for a moment, like a brief flicker out of the corner of your eye, you barely aware it was there. And for any kid not familiar with the old score, they wouldn't even have noticed it. It felt like he put it in only cause he had to. "Here, let me just stuff that in here, that should please everybody." There are so many elements, that if done poorly, can sometimes take away from a movie (maybe even if people don't notice it), but if done greatly, can make a movie a masterpiece. Anyway, good call on some of those other flicks, I also remember liking the score for the Frighteners and Scrooged. . . I just can't remember how the go. Peace.
