I was disappointed with the 40 Year Old Virgin. It was cute and all, but it wasn't laugh-out-loud funny like everyone was saying it was. I felt the same way about Wedding Crashers. To me, both films failed to live up to the hype. I'm hoping this comes through. I'm seeing it tomorrow.

5 of us going. Going to spark one up before hand and give my report on it when I get home. Also I am geeking the fuck out because I just read that the horror classic "From Beyond" is finally getting released in all it's glory on 9/11/07. This has put me in the best mood. Like if any of you really knew me you would understand that this is one of my favorite movies and it's like better then fucking xmas for me right now. I cannot WAIT to get my hands on that DVD.

The scoop is right here http://tinyurl.com/2jq4fx

Really hope Harry or someone from AICN makes a post and TB about this. It's a classic and deserves a mention.

Saw some douches almost come to blows outside a theater here in San Diego arguing about Pirates vs. Spider-Man 3. Little did they know they only thing they were fighting was their own pointless lives. And before I forget, I just want to channel Peter Travers and say "Knocked Up is a Knock Out!" HAH!

Seriously, how Apatow got as much shit as he did in this movie is amazing. He has E! full participation. He got MTV movie awards to help him. He has clips of all these movies in this movie. Which, according to the HF guys, is a bitch in a half to deal with on it's own. So I am amazed this movie feels so REALISTIC as it does because what makes the world real...cost a lot of money to replicate in movies. Nevertheless...check it out...and enjoy a really good movie. Especially if you have a lady and feel like having sentimental sex with her afterwards.

This movie is so fucking cookie cutter, I honestly cant believe all the hype it's getting. Sure, there's a couple of nice laughs in there, but most of the gags and setups are completely and blatantly obvious. Still, if you're the kind of person who either a) can't see an obvious gag or line coming from a mile away, or b) can feel satisfied with just a small handful of funny/amusing moments over the course of a whole film then you should have a pretty decent time I guess. Anyone else, might be better off waiting for rental, you honestly aren't missing much. My opinion anyhow, individual mileage may vary.

Judd Apatow and Seth Rogen are mighty comedy gods. Leslie Mann is hilarious as the angry sister. And it's supercool to see Rogen, James Franco, Jason Segal and Martin Starr in the same movie.

Apatow's kids are as hilarious as they are cute. Plus? Harold Ramis and Bill Hader, who gives voice to one of the funniest gags.

Baby is PACKED with million-dollar jokes. Can't wait to see the outtakes. Can't wait to see "Superbad."

The thing that makes it work so well is the same thing that made 40 Year Old Virgin work so well, it came across real. It was not some slopped together Hollywood gag movie. It was real life and the way they tell it is hilarious. I don't want to get into the details because I am just like that in I want people to experience a movie for themselves so I'll say this. If you like your comedy intelligent and real then you will love this movie. If you are looking for stupid check your brain at the door comedy you will not like this movie. Plain and simple. I like both but this was not that type of movie.

All around great performances from the entire cast too. This will be a movie of repeat visits and will without a doubt earn it's place as a cult classic. Great job, simply great.

At 97% positive among professional reviewers, this is as pefect as it gets. One of the few efforts recently that lives up to the hype and likely the best of '07 so far. Plus zombie free, not 3 hours long, and even preggo, Heigl is hot.... KNOCKED UP could knock Cap'n Jack for a loop. I wouldn't mind seeing AICN's Payola PIRATES drop about 70% its second week. How brilliant does Spidey's early release look now? (Didyaknow? That except for Tuesday and Thursday, Spidey 2 & 3 hold the other 5 daily box office records.).... Despite some threequel fatigue, this is maybe the best year at the multiplex I can remember. And they just keep coming.

If anyone is just leaving college or is still putting their life on hold afterwards, then the first part of this movie, before the "knock up", is a page from reality. Hell!, the rest of the movie is too, ie. Fantasy Baseball problems??? I don't know what samuraiyao does when he's blazed, but he's wasting his time. There is more to do high than eat, just focus...! I remember nights like these guys have when they're hanging out and I have DEFINITELY experienced the double-date, mildly drunk guys bashing their relationships in front of the significant others. IF anyone wants to complain about reality, try the stretch that Ryan Seacrest could ever be that funny or believably deliver those lines. Not to mention, it's not the toilet humor the makes the movie intelligent, it's the references to Felicity Hoffman and Transamerica or a toddler wanting to listen to Greenday. Little golden nuggets like that. Can't wait for the uncut/uncensored gold that will be on the DVD.(Just like 40 YOV)

it WAS a little too long, i'll admit, but at the same time i enjoyed what i was watching so much that i didn't really care. it was hilarious, even if the baby "crowning" scene was a bit much for this kind of movie...despite the fact that it led to some really funny lines between Hill and Baruchel. "Try getting a boner now." hilarious lines scattered throughout..."Who needs a time machine?" "The tall one is gawking at me, and the short one is being very droll. I don't like it." "I like the way you move." "These guys are at work. 'What'd you do today?' 'Oh, just lifted my brother.'" "The last time I took a shit it looked like a fucking stuffed animal!" hilarious.

Thanks for asking, bud. I did indeed hate WEDDING CRASHERS. I liked this one, though. I think some individuals here are exaggerating how funny it is. Any time people keep saying "comic genius" you gotta worry. There are tons and tons of small jokes and character moments, there aren't really that many knock you on your ass laughs. But what I like about it is that like 40 YEAR OLD VIRGIN, maybe moreso, it's very genuine. In WEDDING CRASHERS I didn't buy or give a shit about the formulaic romance for one god damn second, and in fact the characters were total pricks who I hoped would kill each other in a freak joke riffing accident. In this one I did care about the characters, the way these two societal leeches (one a pothead, the other a reporter for E!) try to be responsible adults and do the right thing in a bad situation, and (with the exception of one montage) that doesn't just mean changing his clothes and cleaning his house.

There is alot of universal stuff in the movie that you don't really see captured too well too often. Like the somewhat annoying but redeemable character of Debbie, Paul Rudd needing time to himself, etc. And although this is more commonly depicted I liked the shit talkin friendship with all the pothead roommates and the various running jokes there.

I like this movie. Sincerity works better than smarm for me.

Judd Apatow plagiarized the script...
by yyc-man
Jun 2nd, 2007
12:03:31 PM
Not many people know that Judd Apatow has been accused of stealing the idea for Knocked Up from a Canadian author named Rebecca Eckler. Ms. Eckler wrote a book called "Knocked Up: Confessions of a Hip Mother-to-be" back in early 2004. It was later released in the USA in March 2005. I haven't read the book personally, but it sounds like Apatow stole the general story line, plus several scenes in the movie from her book. There is a good article by the author about her lawsuit against Apatow in the June 11th "Maclean's", pg. 68. Just in case anyone is curious. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it's a great movie and I'll probably see it. I just hope the person who came up with the original idea gets her dues credit.
Have you looked into Rebecca Eckler and her book, yyc?

It doesn't have much to do with this movie, except a pregnancy happening unexpectedly. And if you actually look into her and her book, you'll find a pretty lame and irritating personage- check out amazon reviews of that novel. It's sopsistic and totally self-focused. Not hard to see that with her distorted view this movie would be infringing on her property.

The film was really good. Perhaps the third act dragged a tad, but the jokes were on point, it retained the sweetness everyone seems to mention, and it's insight into relationships was throuroughly poignant. Apatow has something special, and I hope he gets to work on his next project ASAP. That Being said... (mild spoiler) What the fuck was up with the Vagina/Birthing close ups? Wow. ECU of Heigls(sp?) simulated Vageen stretched to the max with baby exploding into this world. What a surprising shot (or two). I have no deeper point about it, but man, Wild.

may not like this particular comedy. I see two reasons. 1) Expectations. People going into the movie expecting it to be the best comedy of all time. No matter how good it is, they will be disappointed. 2)Non confirmists. People trying to be rebels. "I'm cool because I dont like what is popular". This movie is brilliant. But not for everyone. To me, this is his "Freaks and Geeks" movie, while "40 Year Old Virgin" was his "Undeclared". One having more serious moments, the other being more just straight comedy. There are a lot of people that just want to watch American Pie: Band Cap 2, or crap like that. And those people will not enjoy this movie. "Why didnt I see her tits". Still, this movie has something for everyone. Because of that, it could never be as good as some other comedies, if you only like one type of joke. It has plenty of cheap jokes, sure. But if thats the only thing you find funny, I'm sure you could rent a Dane Cook movie and get far more of that. This movie has a shitload of jokes. So one first view it might not be as funny as it will be later. When your given 600 jokes, you are bound to chuckle at a lot of them. But remember, those are the jokes that you end up laughing at on the 100th viewing. The gutbusters arent as funny after the 100th time, and you want a bit more. Thats what makes classic comedies. You can find them funny even after several viewings. You find certain parts funnier than others depending on the week. But its still always funny. This movie cracked me up, and I saw enough that will make me laugh for years.

It's definately one of my favorite comedies now. It's nice to see that while most people are content with putting out things like Epic Movie and Delta Farce, there are still a few people who understand what a comedy should be.

This is a classic? Our standards have really gone down. People love to laugh at the banal pop culture references because - hey - those people are like me!!! We make those same total recall references!!! Something like the Jerk would never be a classic now, because everyone wants everything to be as stupid as they are - movies, TV shows, presidents. AICN loves this movie for the same reason people love dave eggers - the "I could do that!!" factor. And let's not even get into the politics of this sorry, sorry film.

she chose to keep the baby? WTF? That is the most retarded comment I think I've seen yet on this website. Wow. You are going to drag fucking politics into this??? Are you fucking kidding me? The porn and the pot references alone negate what you just said and make you look like a total fucktard. I know plenty of Liberal's who are pro-choice and would keep a baby if they got pregnant. That's the whole point of "Pro-Choice" is that the woman HAS a choice and in no way did I feel at anytime that there was some secret message from the NEO-cons or any conservative group to suggest other wise. If anything if you were paying attention to the movie she debated BOTH options and chose to keep her baby so in that respect it throws your theory right out the window. As if you could not top your last post you have! Hooray! You king idiot of AICN!

What message are you referring to there Einstein? That she CHOSE to keep her baby and he had to grow up and become a man to take care of it and support her in the choice? Note the word "CHOSE". She debated both options in her mind. They clearly played that out. So just because she chose to keep the baby makes this is a pro-life film? Are you fucking kidding me? You took yourself out of the movie just so you could sit there and make it out to be something it's not? Truly sir you are a fucking tard. Open your eyes instead and stop reading into something that is not there. The only thing I got out of the movie was a great intelligent well written comedy gem that I am going to go back and see again.

And for the record I am not a woman and I am no NEO-clown. I hate Bush and that type of propaganda they spew out but in no way did I see anything at all that made me think I was watching some secret message hidden in the movie to make me change my point of view which is pro-choice. I just saw a great movie. You saw what you wanted to see.

Each time you speak more shit comes out of your mouth? Is it shape liked an anus because that's the impression I am getting.

She in no way gave up on her dreams. It only showed the real panic that some go through when reality kicks in that they are about to have a child but in no way did she quite. She kept going and if anything showed how strong she is as a person for the choice she made to balance both AND try to make a relationship work with the real father. You are the one who is tearing her down and making her seem weak with your moronic statements.

Apatow Comedy Vs. Wedding Crashers...
by DanielKurland
Jun 2nd, 2007
05:44:17 PM
In my opinion Wedding Crashers may be funny, but it's not as well written as 40 Year-Old Virgin, or Knocked Up. Why is this? It's because Wedding Crashers can jsut have Will Ferrell crying in that funeral scene and an audience will be losing it. When you have actors like that in a movie, you don't even need to have a great script, you just have them being loud, and banking on previous material, and people will find it funny. 40 Year-Old Virgin and Knocked Up had a lot of relatively unknown by the mainstream audience people in it, and because of that, it needs to be well-written to get laughs (it doesn't need to be, but I'm sure Apatow just wants to write a funny movie). So those are my thoughts, those Vaughn/Wilson/Ferell comedies can just have one of them running through the street, yelling, etc., and people will love it, whereas movies like this need to work harder, and it shows.

The film, as with 40YOV, is the equivalent of a novelist who needs a strong editor to kill his favorites. Way too much filler, and coming off of watching Waitress (the other drunk chick lets schlub plant his seed story)in the same week, the more disorganized of the two.

Like, that man to you is the epitome of people flocking to something slightly above average because they think they could do it too? The man founded McSweeney's publishing, and has created a pretty enviable existence for himself, writing when he pleases, using his name to promote other, less fortunate talents. God damn, dude, I would hate to be your child. What would he have to do to win your approval, follow up MIT with a position on Jeb Bush's cabinet? I get that it's cool to hate on EVERYTHING these days, but singling out Dave Eggers seems out-of-left field, not to mention completely irrelevant. If you have serious critiques, I would love to hear them.

I don't think Seth Rogan is a great lead. He was one of the annoyances in "40 year old virgin." I like Katherine Hiegl, she's no lead, she's good to look at and a good actress, but only was good in "The Ringer." Honestly, the Judd Apatow praise is killing me. The guy has only done maybe 2 or 3 actual good things. Even those were iffy. "Cable Guy" was great and quirky but an enjoyable piece of misery. There were good reason why his two shows were axed, they weren't garnering viewers. So they axed em, and fanboys cried, but studios didn't care. He went on to do "40 Year Old Virgin" a marginally funny overhyped machine. "Knocked Up" I'm torn on. I've seen funny parts, but I'm also uninterested but curious. I want to see it but $6 or more is asking alot from me. If Universal gave me an ultimatum, pay to see it, if it's not what you expected or as funny, they'll refund me my money. I think that is fair, seeing how hyped this movie is. Cause I wanted my 2 1/2 hours back after watching "40 year old Virgin."
Oh and one more thing....

I did laugh more at "Wedding Crashers." I thought it was more on par with what braod comedy should be. "40 Year Old Virgin" was all over the place. My big fault for it is that it wanted to be a sweet comedy, which it was. Then it threw unnecessary vulgar jokes at you. And to me it killed the movie and script. Sadly I fear the same with "Knocked Up." Truly funny people know you can't be jumbled up like that. You can't have a sentimental and good hearted comedy, then throw gay diatribes and unnecessary harsh over the top vulgar language at the viewer. It's not funny, it's offensive and assaultive. A classic comedy can't go both ways. At least not in this movie lover's eyes.

I went into this, as I said a few dozen posts above, not knowing what to expect because I was disappointed by Wedding Crashers and 40 Year Old Virgin..... Well, I'm happy to report I LOVED THIS MOVIE. It hit every note perfect for me. If there were 100 jokes in this movie, about 95% of them connected. The relationships were spot on. The acting was great. The timing was impeccable. I can't say enough how much I enjoyed this film. On a side note, my girlfrind was really upset by the movie and thought it WAS anti-women. She felt that way basically due to the scenes where the guy goes around behind his wife's back to play fantasy baseball, and then goes to a strip club. She also didn't like all the pot smoking. (she's a bit of a straight-edge ninny) I loved it though. Much better than I expected and on par with Borat for laugh-out-loud funny.

Yeah Eckler is a pretty self absorbed, shallow person, at least that's the impression you get from her writing. She used to write for the Arts & Life section of the Canadian National Post newspaper and yeah it was pretty stupid stuff. She basically wrote about her own life. So don't go giving her any ideas haha. Stealing her story? The movie sounds pretty general. After all, people say there are only 6 real story ideas. 01:47:07 AM
This movie was a fucking tour de force of R rated comedy, something that is always on the verge of being extinct. I've sold a comedy to one of the big studios and in the first meeting with the execs, they asked me to take out all the pot references, all the "fuck's" and concentrate on getting it more in the PG-13 ball park. When I see something like KNOCKED UP work the way it did, it gives me the glimmer of hope that one day soon execs and producers will pull their fucking heads out of their asses and let the funny voices out there be heard. Apatow earned this creative freedom on 40yo Virgin and what he did in KNOCKED UP was show the world what can happen when a truly funny voice can just make the damn movie he wanted to make. It's rated R. It's got drugs, nudity, sex, bad language and it also has the most heart of any of the fucking tripe the studios are pumping out this year. It's got more heart than that fucking Will Smith and his kid flick ever could have had. Apatow and Rogen deserve Best Original Screenplay Nominations come Oscar time. Show me a movie more in touch with who we really are right now in America. The theater I was in was packed and everyone was laughing their asses off. Well done Judd, Seth and everyone involved and I mean everyone. You guys give me hope. And the chick who worked at E who sat in on all the meetings and made the comments, stole the fucking movie.

Where do I start ? Guys sitting around all day getting high in a house that they (rent ?) with no means of support looking for the naked titties in movies. Sure, they never would have seen the "Mr. Skin" website or another of the dozens like it. Idiots with vocabularies that seem to consist of only an "F" word with four letters. One of the hotter chicks on the planet screwing a big, fat, goofly looking, imbecilic moron. (I know she's really drunk, but is she in a coma ? By the way, during graphic sex scenes, Ms. Heigl's bra is never removed. Realistic ?) Believe me, I am no prude. Bad language does not offend me. Sex scenes don't offend me. Comedies that are not funny offend me. I am shocked that both audiences and critics alike are showering this movie with praise. From the teens, geeks and fanboys of this website, I understand it, but what are the nation's critics excuses ? My near empty Saturday afternoon theater was practically silent with an only occasional snicker or giggle heard. Apatow has done great work in the past, so hopefully this will be a glitch. "Superbad," looks just as bad. Again, I go back to the language. Foul language in a comedy is great when used in the right places. But in this movie, every third word from every character was "fuck." And how about adding an ending to your next movie Judd ? And Seth's character's overnight transformation into father and boyfriend/husband of the year, unbelievable. And I know it must be fun to work with the same cast and crew on multiple films, but it might be time to change things up Judd. The only thing in the movie that made me laugh were the scenes in the E! office with the pirate from "Dodgeball" and the SNL gal. I know this is a fiction comedy and not a documentary. But a more realistic comedy would have been a million times funnier. Consider this a warning.

The audience I saw KNOCKED UP with was howling all the way through. Sorry there wasn’t any pie-fucking or Jim Carrey talking out of his buttcheeks to make you laugh as hard as everyone else. If the funniest gags in KNOCKED UP went over your head, you should maybe stay home and watch MY NAME IS EARL.

And that $29 million was really more like $60 million. You know half that audience was comprised of teens who bought SHREK tickets then switched auditoriums.

Didn't have the writing Knocked Up did, plain and simple. If you really hated the writing and acting that much, then you clearly don't get it. And there's nothing wrong with that, but when everyone else, including critics who'd normally put the torch to this type of movie loves it, just realize you're part of the handful of people whose heads this gem went right over.

I liked it but I thought 40 Year Old Virgin was better. Something About Mary was also funnier.

The reason KU is better than WC is that the former uses comedy to support the characters and story rather than WC where the story takes back seat to the 2 star's improvs that were probably hilarious on set, but topped out at mildly amusing. However the "We'll Sail Without 'em!" V.O. from Christopher Walken is classic.

I thought it was great, I watched Freaks and Geeks during its original run when I was in the 8th grade. I totally related to that show and it was so nostalgic and fun to see a bunch of great actors from that and Undeclared in here. Judd Apatow is great and Seth Rogen is my favorite actor. I think the movie could've used a little more funny towards the end, especially with the stoner friends, they could've inserted them during that long stretch where they don't appear to lighten up the seriousness but the movie was hilarious and sweet and I love it. Superbad!

Just got back from a show at Pacific Culver, took the girlfriend. We're both fans of Apatow (though I thought Wedding Crashers was tired junk and she thought it was "giggle worthy", but enough about Wedding Crashers...why is everyone comparing the two?) Where do I start? Well, for one I fuckin' loved it. Anyone that is saying it's unrealistic has missed the point. The characters are the most realistic I've seen in a while. If you're saying the movie is anti-woman...you're not smart. Get over it. My girlfriend fucking loved it...she's smart. Paul Rudd is a great actor and wish he was in more. I've liked Seth Rogen since Freaks and Geeks and he's evolved alot...and he wasn't bad then. If you're at all uptight about casual drug use not shown in a negative light or constant cursing, go see something else. I laughed alot more at this than 40 Year Old Virgin. The celebrity cameos were fucking great....Ryan Seacrest's "I've got 4 fucking jobs." and the whole very REAL awkwardness from Steve Carrel was great. Apatow collects fucking great actors with great mannerisms, delivery and timing. Keep it up Judd, you fucker!

How can anybody with even the slightest sense of humor hate on this movie. Funniest movie since Borat. Great acting, story, and heart.

I loved the first hour of the movie, but once again Aptow strays from the humorous supporting cast to concentrate on the guy/girl relationship. This is the same place Virgin fell apart. He needs to stick to the dick jokes for a whole movie. Wait for a rental.
KU is Apatow's "crowning" achievement!!

After seeing the movie I thought there was supposed to be a part in it that mirrored the "You know how I know your gay" scene from 40YOV but it was something like "You know how I know your sensative?" I was waiting for that, I think AICN reported it was in it origianally. I wonder if it will be in the DVD?

I loved the film, but found the wife and grey's anatomy girl to be VERY annoying. Maybe it's just cause I'm a guy? Any women out there agree with me???

And I loved that one too. I think people hating on this movie probably have some issues with social interaction (read they have none). I think people who are in relationships with both their freinds and lovers will not see any of this as forced, fake, long, contrite. I thought it was one of the most realistic subtle well written comedies I've ever seen. I kept waiting for there to be some god awful plot device like "she tries dating a rich guy" or "unneccesary complication in the pregnancy to stir up drama" and it never came I was so happy. It's a great movie people go see it.

sounds like she has issues. The male characters in the movie don't really do anything wrong, and they present a valid perspective. A woman who comes out of the movie upset with the male characters in the movie, especially Rudd and Rogen's characters, is a woman you need to have a serious talk with.

What's wrong little fella? Why so testy? Are you still stuck on the chicken de-asser down at the KFC? Or do you need your diaper changed? Cuz your pissy little attitude could NOT derive from watching Knocked Up. It's a funny ,real movie that makes you feel good about being and sharing certain aspects of humanity. You definitley need to drain the venom out of your sack.

I'm amazed at how much praise this is getting. I thought it was OK, but not as great as everyone here seems to think. Lots of small chuckles, but no belly-laughs frmm me. I really wanted to love this, but maybe my expectations were too high. I loved 40-YOV, but to me, this wasn't nearly as good. I liked, but not loved. I hope SuperBad delivers.

I'm 34, happily married, make a very good living and I LOVED Knocked Up. I don't consider myself a pure adolescent and if the humor was obvious and cloying, how come no one else ever tapped into it this well? I think I smell sour grapes from the poster above who just wants to hate for the sake of hating. The theater I was in was packed with all ages and everyone was laughing their asses off. This is a comedy classic. We haven't been privy to many of those in a long time.

we're all just pre-programmed sheep. Thank god we can always rely on Talkback Saviours such as AnimalStructure to enlighten us uncultured masses. He is a true pioneer that one. Never before in the history of talkbacks has what he is currently doing, ever been done. A real original that guy.

Someone I know said that in a video store he made a cameo after they talked about the Graduate. I had no memory of this and I saw it twice but I have a bet on this so if someone could help me out that would be great.

The truth is everyone is too busy arguing over torture porn to continue agreeing (except for you and a few others) about how much ass Knocked Up kicks. Watching Knocked Up for the first time was like watching 300 on the Imax; it was too much. 300 was too big, Knocked Up was too funny. Can't wait till both are on DVD.

I usually get a lot of crap for not already knowing the songs or whatever. But if some kind person could help me figure out the song that is playing when we first see the guys' house in the movie. I believe it is the Wu-Tang but I am not sure. Thanks, loved the movie.
