I'm actually pretty excited about this movie. The Wachowskis have already burned all our asses before and I never watched the original Speed Racer cartoon, so it's a bit strange that I want to see this so badly. But hey, Matthew Fox as Racer X and that sweet-looking vehicle up there? Works for me.

I LOVED Speed Racer when I was a kid and... I'm not a kid anymore. Hollywood is running out of ideas so they are going for easy hits. They know you losers watched this show as children and are willing to bet you grew up to be adult losers with disposable income and free friday nights who want to buy back your childhood. What next, a Transformers movie?

I'm actually interested in this movie, despite the spotty track record of the Brothers W. And to be fair, I guess the Teen Titans thing is a big deal, if only to go ahead and launch the raising of the red flags with Goldsman involved... But still. A new Universal park (or island, as it were) is huge news. The fact that it's themed after a hugely successful fantasy series makes it moreso. Add an oscar winning production designer to the mix... Yeah, I'd say it is relevant. The black-box-boys have to have gotten dozens of emails on it already.

I think it will be like a cinematic haiku. If they really are going for that I think thats pretty cool. I think the right limitations on artists create the best results sometimes. It will force them to be creative and figure out ways to get all ages to enjoy this. G doesn't mean boring kids stuff, and its about race cars. There is no need for unnecessary violence and sex. Not like Transformers which was always a pretty violent cartoon. What would they do if they ever did a GI-Joe film. How could that not be R.

He really needs to STFU and let other people promote his films. He plugs the living shit out of every project he's attached to no matter how incredibly shitty it is. I remember meeting him when he was with Hilary Swank promoting The Reaping, and he want on and on about how it was going to change the face of horror.. If anyone out there actually saw The Reaping, they fully understand how false his statements were. Quit trying to "sell" us Silver, we're not buying it anymore.

Does that mean you don't like Spiderman, Pirates, or Lord of the Rings because the source material is over 40 years old? Pull your head out! I trust the W Bros to handle this one - and the car looks great! Also, I wouldn't assume it's G rated - it could be PG and considered family-friendly. Besides, Speed Racer isn't about exploding body parts, it's about taking on The Man!

yeah dude, you may be right. Maybe a g rated flick will do to the wachowskis and speed racer what a limited budget did for The Matrix. The lack of money forced them to make a good movie. Maybe a lack of a higher rating will force them to make an okay, fun flick.

But with X-Men and Spidey they had several movies left in them... Whatever.. I'm sick of Studio thinking. Fuck em all.
How the chimp could work...
by stlfilmwire
May 31st, 2007
02:05:09 PM
The only way the chimp thing could work is if Spritle climbs into the driver's seat as it is being towed off by a bad guy -- in an effort to at least rescue his pet monkey who is already sitting in that seat. Then the baddies notice them in their rear view mirror and lock them in the truck... so when Speed rescues the car, little does he know that Spritle and Chim Chim are in the trunk. That should be the extent of the monkey's involvement. Give the kid and the chimp some late second act/third act plot fun, but that is it. I dunno.
The KEY is the theme song.
by riskebiz
May 31st, 2007
02:06:18 PM
I think they ought to use the old TV theme song EXACTLY as it is/was. Instead of redoing or updating it with some ridiculous Velvet Revolver'ish sort of rock band version (or rap version or something of the sort), or inserting the old theme playfully (like Spiderman films do with the old Spidey TV theme), they ought to just keep it as it is. That would be real cool.

Artists need to be free to make whatever films they way they need to. Forcing people who don't want to make kid films will result in shitty kid films. It just so happens that the bros. want to make a kiddie flick. But it's ok not to as well (kids have enough films anyway). Oh and modlight, John Woo has already made 2 pg-13 movies and produced one (bulletproof monk) and they were total shit. How is going PG going to improve his skills. He needs to go back to what made him great in the first place instead of running from it even more.

Who the hell cares, am I right? But I was talking about the early 70's. UHF. How many of you ass monkeys even know what that means? You with your fancy cable boxes, not having to stand next to the TV holding on to the tuner in order to receive said broadcast. Not getting static shocked every time you approach that huge freaking Zenith with it's faux wood look. I was the damn remote control and that TV had it in for me. The b/w TV in my room sucked worse - rolling, rolling, rolling. Like the Outer Limits intro, man - someone was controlling the horizontal and the vertical, but it sure as hell weren't me. Also, double post.

I wanted Woo to have a budget, not different ratings. And total freedom may be great for artists, but not for the public. CG allows filmmakers to be completely free but how often does that actually work, just ask anyone who's seen Episodes 1-3. How many great bands made it big then had the creative freedom and budget to do whatever they like, its why Chinese Democracy is so much better than Appetite, wait... I agree that there is a fine line between stifling artists with rules and regulations and making artists solve problems and work around limitations. How often did we see the shark in Jaws? Not often because it was a technological nightmare that they ended up having work around and hide for most of the movie. Now which was scarier, Jaws, or War of the Worlds which did nothing but show the monsters in all their glory (they looked amazing by the way). So if you want Art films, fine they should have no limitations, but regular films and movies need to be a compromise between the artist and the audience, that is what this site is all about. When they are free to do whatever they want we end up with Lady in the Water.

When I see things like this, I'm reminded that no, the X-Men don't need to wear black leather jumpsuits, Galactus doesn't need to be a cloud, the Green Goblin doesn't need to be frozen-masked suit of stiff armor, Superman doesn't need the colors on his suit to be muted, Batman doesn't need some military-industrial dune buggy as the Batmobile, etc. We can have fun with these imaginative stories and not be so self-conscious about it to the point where things end up blah. I think that, all else being equal, the "playing it safe" films will seem much more boring in retrospect as the years go by. Caveat--I don't have some brilliant idea about how to do everything better (I wouldn't have wanted to see Hugh Jackman in bright yellow and blue tights), but somehow it always seems to diminish things when a cliched safe-way-out is taken, and I think we instinctively know what that looks like. And bright and lively needs to be done very well in order to work--see the horrible FF2 trailers for what happens when that's not the case.
So what IS this film about again?

So c'mon haters... lighten up... this shitz s'posed to be FUN!

You have a point. I certainly would like Woo to go back and make a movie like The Killer which probably cost a fraction of the budget of that piece of shit movie Paycheck. Lowering the budget allows for studios to take a chance with R rated movies. Not sure how Tarantino making a PG rated movie would be a good idea though. I'd like to see him return to his crime fiction roots. If it was like twelve years ago and R-rated action/thriller stuff was still being made, I'd be cool with guys like the Wachowskis or Tarantino branching out. Now with family stuff dominating the theatres we need those guys to do what they do best more than ever.

It's Speedracer/Mach GoGo. It's a franchise that people have tried to bring back decade after decade and it always fails. The cancelled cartoons, the cancelled comic books. Even the japanese sold the rights to a US fan because even they know it's dead. Now these twats are making a movie about it. God, what a joke. http://tinyurl.com/3764zs

But this is another one of those cartoons that just wasn't very good and shouldn't be remembered as something it isn't. My favorite moment in the series is actually in the title sequence when a car goes off the track and explodes with the intensity of a nuclear warhead. How much fuel was in that car? And you gotta love a kid's show that has a death in the title credits. But other than that - come on. Not that good.

Yellow spandex? No, but gold'ish leather with a dark blue design pattern such as it appears on the comic version wouldn't have been too terribly hard to accomplish in making it look good. Heck, he could have had a leather jacket that looked like the comic and a motorcycle helmet that was reminiscent of his mask. Not too hard, but idiot movie costumers wanted to "do their own thing" and so they aped the Matrix look.

So what if it's based on an old cartoon? Lot's of shit is being remade these days... so what if no one remembers it? Don't you think they can market it like it was new? They got teh car right, and for all teh bitching about Transformers, hardly anyone can give them due for staying true to the source material? We hardly know much about teh film except that it's family friendly... Don't like that? Then go watch John Rambo! DOn't like CGI? You expect them to do all that crazy ass anime bullet time shit with real cars and people? Would it be practical? If CG can do anything these days realistically it's cars! Practically all car commercials you see on TV have 100% CGI cars in them. What's up with you guys? I'm all excited to see some effects driven car racing with new groundbreaking CGI and a decent family story. Can't wait to see a trailer!

How nice to see a pic of an iconic part of our childhood that is amazingly dead-on ACCURATE! "Underdog" looks like a rejected Disney flick, and I'd just as soon forget "Transformers" even existed (I was OK with the Shogun Warriors). And let's not forget that image of The HeathJoker that's been popping up everywhere: no, that is NOT the Joker, so sorry, Nicholoson's look was better; hell, CESAR ROMERO's was better in terms of staying true to the comic! Here, we have proof that the Wachowskis care enough about the source material not to fuck with it. Speed Racer wasn't Shakespeare; it was poorly animated, hilariously voice-acted, pure mindless and violent FUN; and that's exactly what I hope the film turns out to be. Good start: they got the car right.

After that whole Matrix business, I really thought they'd do a George Lucas and retreat to some big ranch and do a bunch of executive producer jobs. So, if nothing, I'm glad to hear they're getting back into directing. For all the flaws in Matrix 2 and 3, they're still good directors. It'll be nice to see them taking on a simple, action-based story without a bunch of references to religion and philosophy and whatnot. That is, unless they decide to use this material to make an analogy about Muhammad or Buddha or somesuch. I don;t remember either of them having a really fast car, though, so maybe we're safe.

I don't know too much about this Speed Racer, but according to the Wikipedia, it has a monkey of some sort in it. That's another point in its favour, I think.

Is that Joel Silver doesn't want them to get caught up saying something stupid about the Matrix movies when Sophia Stewart is suing them for copyright infringement. If they say something to help her case Warner Brothers could lose billions to Sophia probably opening up a lawsuit from Grant Morrison as well. Another reason is Larry Wachowski is indeed a he-she now and it wont really work to make Behind The Scenes when your Brothers are one guy and a man dressed up as a woman. It will distract from the film itself. Still Speed Racer should be an interesting departure from the Matrix.

What i was saying was, that unless they liked the cartoon as a kid, older folks probably won't be into a movie about a teenager with a gadget-filled race car that runs around with his little brother and a monkey in his trunk. They might, however, take thier kids to see it. Someone above said that only people over thirty would care about it. I think the people that will care the most are the parents of the 5, 6 and 7 year olds who may have never heard of the show, but might love the movie. And somehow I dont think they'll need to see Speed killing anyone or a shot of Trixie's tits to enjoy it.
Oh, and the Snorks were an 80s cartoon. Think Smurfs underwater.

there is a difference. Now you can love SR, hate it... whatever. and you all have your reasons. you loved it as a kid, you like retro toons (you don't need to be over 40 to have seen the original - reruns, y'know?), you think it's silly kiddy fare (and if you actually had WATCHED a couple you'd know you were off the mark), or you don't like the Wachowskis movie-making skills, that's fine. but come on! some of these comments are downright bug-fuck ignorant. lemme hit some points that no one else addressed. 1.)Flaggg - apparently you need to learn the definition of sarcasm. 2.)Rat Fink - my god you're a dolt. i'm guessing you're 11, maybe 12. Maybe when your balls drop, it'll shake out some common sense. 3.)Lot's of people seem inordinatly concerned with Larry Wachowskis gender identity... I'm not going to waste my breath on this one. This is America, land of the bleating, idiot sheep. In a country where 48% of the population think Evolution is a theory and think the bible is literal and Bush is a great leader, you can't make any point based on reason, compassion or rational thought. A final thought, if it's a PG version, I assume they won't be using DJ Kioki's Speed Racer Porn Remix in the soundtrack (ooohhhhh... Speeeeeeeed!) ; ) Thanks for listning. ---------------- "HI FLOOR!
