They've been kickin up the hype machines w/the tv ads, but I have to admit I like what it's showin. I know it's just gonna be a Summer popcorn movie as far as a plot...but I have to admit I'm likin what I'm seein. My fav shot is that kind of slo-mo one of Bonecrusher (name?) kinda skatin towards Prime on the freeway. That is cool movement & seems like the way a big lumbering machine could build up speed. I'm not the biggest Bay fan, but I hope the actual combat/movements read like that through the movie.

It's kind of ironic to complain about that, seeing as its closer to the source material. Back when that stuff was made, the robots sounded giant steven hawkings rattling off speeches , and they do now too. Sure it's not realistic or appropriate to their level of technology, but then again........................ THEY ARE GIANT ROBOTS THAT TURN INTO CARS
Lour Reed--
by zb.brox

No, it's farther from the source material. The vast majority of the Transformers had very natural human voices. Listen to Bumblebee, Hotrod, Jazz, Prime, Blaster, Wheeljack, etc, they just sound like people. The only really "computery" voice was Soundwave, and to a degree the abomination that was Wheelie. This looks like a deliberate attempt to make the robots less human and more "badass", which has pissed me off about this movie from the beginning--they're giant robots with laser guns, of course they're gonna be badass. But making them all creepy and "alien" isn't true to the source, true to their level of technological advancement, or useful in terms of making them likable heroic characters,

all the hate attached to this movie. First in line to be hate should be whoever released Transformers to be made into a movie because when an original story reaches Hollywood it WILL be chewed, regurgitated and will piss somene off. Second to be hated should be screenwriters and producers. You shouldn't dare to hate the designers working their ass off to make it look great flames and all. . Sure you can hate Bay for obvious reasons but you know what it's his movie, made the way he wants. I'm not a Bay apologist Armaggedon make me want to toss sometimes but I'm not writing him off for it.

Excellent point. The first two Star Wars movies in particular avoided cheap "cute" humor, when did we start having to put idiotic, reality-breaking sight-gags and puns in movies to make them more kid-friendly? And for THIS movie? We go from "Giant metal stinger impales army guy" to "dog pees on robot"--pandering to eight-year-olds who really shouldn't watch this movie in the first place is kind of annoying, y'know?

I know Wikipedia is questionable at best but: "Some leaked information indicates that he may not have a vocal role in the film, having had his voice capacitor crushed, and may communicate through his car radio." so...I don't know. It would be interesting if his voice was an amalgam of different things on the radio, like a song then some news then some talk radio that all forms sentences. still looks bad ass.

I totally see the point you're making with regards to kids and so on. But I think it's important to keep in mind that this film had to be made with several audiences in mind. It's pretty much three-fold = the hardcore-nostalgia crowd (30-40 somethings who watched the cartoons, collected the original comics and toys, etc.), the average movie-goer (those who don't really care about the property but want to see an entertaining film), and the kid crowd (those who still watch Armada, blah-blah-blah, and collect the current toyline). Say what you will about Bay & Co. (Spielberg is the one who pushed for the "Boy & His Car Angle") but it's quite a challenge to make a 2 hour film that can crossover to all the different branches of fandom while trying to incorporate some of the mythology from all the various incarnations. I think it would be difficult no matter the subject/property.

I think if the film was good and stayed true to the spirit of the source, people would accept almost any number of changes to appearances, even characters. Look at the X-Men franchise--Totally different look, Rogue, Nightcrawler, Storm, Iceman, and others completely shifted in terms of character to suit the story, and yet because they got the themes right, because Wolverine and Magneto were so badass and so close in spirit to their source, the first two X-flicks are highly accepted, certainly by me.

If you make a good movie, most fans will be mollified, and general audiences will line up, even if it's "aimed" at children. The Harry Potter movies do plenty fine for themselves, right?

On Spileberg: I said in another thread--I realize that Spielberg came up with a lot of what I don't like about this film. But if it were Spielberg, I'd have a lot more faith that he could take that bad (at least to me) idea and do something good with it.

I mean, look, let's forget this is a Transformers movie for a second. If you just told me that Spielberg wanted to do a movie about a young man who gets a car, and finds the car is alive and turns into a giant alien robot? I'm on board. Sign me up, this is the guy who did fuckin' ET, I trust him to make that a good movie. You tell me it's Michael Bay, though? Any hope I'd have of there being a genuine emotional core to that film sinks, and it suddenly sounds like Herbie with explosions.

Now make that movie Transformers--and I'm willing to give Spielberg a chance to win me over, because I know if it weren't TFs I'd want to see his movie. But with Bay? It seems like attending his movie is just a chore I have to do on the off-chance it's salvageable.

No one was ever asking for beards on robots, just for them to make a movie that actually revolved around the robots, instead of making them peripheral. No one ever wanted the boxy 80s deisgns either, just not the convoluted mess of gears and wires we got. I'm sure the action scenes are going to be terrific, but I'd be happier if I could actually identify something that looks like a robot in them (rather than a convoluted wreck of metal).

What the fuck do you think something like a trasformer would really look like. Teeth/ mouth aside. The mess of wires and such are very realistic. Have you ever seen the inside of any electronic device that has moving parts. Very confusing. Also, stop putting the cartoon on a pedistal. The design was childish and ment to look like toys. The new desing is not toy friendly. How are they goning to do that?

Hmmm, I don't know. Where you reflexively see a "wreck of metal", I see a sophisticated robot that actually looks like it could have realistically transformed from an Earthbound vehicle. And while the robots may be peripheral at the outset (probably necessary for an introductory film that has to set the stage), I'm sure they will move more to the forefront by film's end. While it's a valid concern, only the film can tell.

I think most of the dialog is fine in Star Wars--it fits with the whole mystique of the film. But even if the dialog was iffy in places, Star Wars accomplished a lot more than just good special effects, it essentially brought together and amalgamated all kinds of myths and hero ideologies and cultural archetypes in a way that Transformers can't even begin to hope to. It did for space what Lord of the Rings did for Fantasy. Plot and themes can save crap dialog in a way that simple special effects can't, because special effects, unlike plots and themes, can't just make you care.

Spielberg is my only reason. That and I think that Transformers is tailor made for Bay's big action style.

And let's fact it: the only emotionally connected relationship in the G1 universe (IMHO) is the one that existed between Bumblebee and Sam. That may be the one relationship Bay & Co. get right and (ironically) it's the one relationship everyone is bitching about.

So it's a bout 8 o'clock at night. Michael Bay knocks on my door. I open it. He's wearing a tuxedo, and has a bouqet of red roses for me. I graciously accept them. I ask him if he's ready to go watch his new movie, and he says no. Michael says we should have a drink first. I agree. We sit and pours us both a glass of champange. He doesn't say anything for a bit, and there is this awkward silence. I try to break the ice by asking about his new movie. He doesn't respond. He just stares at me very intensely. I get a little nervous, and ask him if he's alright. Still, he says nothing. There's a long silence, and finally I say "We'll lets go see your next masterpiece." Michael says,"No. Not yet. There's something I want from you first." I look at him, into his cold and searing eyes, and ask him, "What?" In a soft, monotone voice Michael replies, "This." Suddenly, he runs over and grabs me with his strong hands and pushes to the ground. I get so scared that I urinate in my pants. He hovers over me for a second, and flips me around face first to the ground. I'm so scared that I can't even manage to yell for help. Michael pulls down my pants violenlty, and starts to undo his pants. I'm breathing as hard, and as fast as I can. Then a moment later, when the panic was just starting to settle in, I feel it. Michael has just penetrated me with his twelve inch penis. It's so hard and painful. I can barely stand it. Michael keeps whispering into my ear, "Yeah, you know you like it." while he's raping me. A little trickles down my cheek. I pray that it ends soon, and surprisngly enough, it does. After he's finished, Michael removes himself from my insides. He stands above me like a towering giant. I turn around anxiously, hoping the whole ordeal is over. That's when I see a demented grin on Michael's face. He says,"You fucking whore! Why did you make me do it? Huh?" I reply in terror, "But I didn't" "Yes, you did! You filthy slut,"he shouts back at me. He then starts kicking me as hard as he can, and punching me with his huge hands of his. I start yelling for someone to help me, but no one comes. Michael, hitting me all the while, screams at me that 'I made him DO IT'. The beating is intense, and I can not defend my self. Finally, Michael seems to tire out. He stops hitting me, and tells me that if I ever tell he'll kill me. I nod, and say I believe him. He zips his pants back up, and slowly strides out the front door. I lay there on the floor with blood, cum , and piss all over me. I quietly whisper to myself, "I love you, Michael Bay."

...and let me make it clear I AM NOT HATING ON IT - I grew up with it as did a lot of people here, but script-wise it was a busy storyline that was a hodge-podge of everything Lucas grew up with; the effects are what made it popular. Lucas got better with 5 and 6, but, ironically, messed up with the prequels and it was the NAME that carried those films. If you had stripped Episode One of the Star Wars title and renamed the characters, it would've bombed horribly. I think Transformers looks just fine - and to whomever it was that mentioned the Sam Witwicky/Bumblebee plotline being the one verbatim straight from the comics & cartoon being the ironic-fanboy rant was spot-on. Kudos.

From the leaked script, to the fucking horrible bot designs, to the trailers, I've seen enough to know that what I've seen is fucking garbage. People bitch constantly that films are devoid of a good script and direction, and yet in the same breath defend horseshit like this. ...I'm not knocking the movie, but the trailer itself. Cut so fast that my old eyes couldn't focus on a damn thing. It just looked like a hyper-jumble of robotic looking crap. I hope the movie has a scene that stays focused for more than five seconds. So far, it looks like the typical Bay style of ultra-quick cuts to not let the audience focus long enough to figure out he is dishing crap down our throats.

Plus, the marketing machine is relying too much on familiarity with a toy line rather than explaining any story points in the trailer. I'm thinking that at best, they may have a Independence Day type opening (97 mil+), but have a War Of The Worlds type domestic gross (250 mil). Which isn't too great now that less people see movies... $11-$15 a ticket here...sheesh... Not sure how popular Transformers are around the rest of the world, so no telling how much they'll rake in from the F.B.O.

Personally, I think we should keep kids away from this movie... I'm afraid it will give the wee ones seizures through the quick cut pacing! HA! I kid!

Though, most I know want to see it simply to see how badly they screw this up. I kinda feel that's how most of the over 30 crowd is viewing this flick. So a big initial weekend, followed by an expected beatdown by Harry Potter And The Order Of The Phoenix as it takes the top spot the very next week. H.P., after all, does have a MUCH LARGER fan base. Plus, it's release is close to the release of the final book which will have a way bigger buzz and free media attention than Transformers could ever pray or pay for. That is a combination that will most likely kill any Transformers movie momentum.

Either way, thanks much to this trailer, Transformers now has my suck-o-meter on orange alert.

Oh not only will the jokes be lame...

Saying the original Star Wars film was a trainwreck and you're psyched for Transformers in the same talkback is pretty amazing. Star Wars is an amazing movie. That's it. The special effects were not what made it the phenomenon it is. The fact that Lucas told an elemental story that resonated in the hearts and minds of nearly everyone that saw it is what made it a phenomenon. Star Wars is, simply, wonderful storytelling that happens to be aided by special effects (and don't kid yourself, the effects weren't that groundbreaking, take a look at 2001 a few years earlier...many of its shots were higher in quality than the original Star Wars). Michael Bay is a hack. The guy has never made a good movie. The Rock was...okay. But Armageddon? Pearl Harbor? I mean, what the fuck? Anyway, there's a reason the original Star Wars film is in the top 20 in the AFI list of top 100 movies. I guarantee a Michael Bay film will never enter that list. Kthx.

First of all, Bay is garbage. It's true. Said this before. He has not yet made ONE decent film (I don't consider "turn off my brain to watch" to be a prereq. of a decent film). Secondly, much like Singer did with Superman Returns, it seems like they just MISSED THE POINT. The Transformers seem like elements in a story revolving around their arrival on Earth. Forget about the fact that the dialogue WILL be horribe, the love story will be overly simplistic and sappy....if I'm going to see a movie called TRANSFORMERS I'd like the main characters of said movie to BE the Transformers. I haven't read the script like so many seem, but I'd be surprised if Optimus Prime has more than 10 minutes of dialogue. I cringe at calling so many of you apologists, but that is what your immediate defense of this flick amounts to. You know that it's not gonna live up to your expectations (and granted, some you have WAY TOO HIGH expectations) so you're giving it the STAR WARS prequel treatment and excepting it. It absolutely sucks that this movie will make 500 million dollars...it REALLY sucks. And I'm sure the action WILL be cool...but it will be hallow. Like MOST of Marvel's films, it'll be a testament to what COULD have been. Damn shame.

Star Wars gave nothing to the world? Well, then I guess you can throw a huge amount of filmmakers working today out the window. Many of these people (like, say, James Cameron) were inspired by Star Wars to the point that they decided to pursue a career making movies. Sure, many of those inspired by Star Wars would go on to make crappy movies (see: most big-budget summer fare), but there are many who were inspired and produced great films (Cameron and Scott, to name a few). How many films can say that they've inspired the majority of the next wave of filmmakers? And how, again, was Star Wars 'focused on its own vastness'? Wasn't the first film just the story of a simple farm boy and his journey out into the world? Gee whiz, that story sure was way too vast... Right.

No offense Matty, you are a true Star Wars fan, I can appreciate that being a huge comic book geek myself, but Star Wars has been placed on a pedestal that is simply rediculous with grandoise defenses like you said "Star Wars is an amazing movie. That's it. The special effects were not what made it the phenomenon it is. The fact that Lucas told an elemental story that resonated in the hearts and minds of nearly everyone that saw it is what made it a phenomenon."

Jorge Lucas got lucky because of the effects; I can guarantee that back in '77, audiences walking out weren't saying "Wow! What an amalgamation of Kirosawa and Japanese Samurai epics with Western and Flash Gordon influences" but rather "Holy shit! Did you see that X-Wing trench battle?! How did they do that?!"

I grew up early with Star Wars, but, when I was 8, Transformers came along and stepped in for the remaining years of my youth in the 80's; that's why I will totally admit about psyched for Transformers and letting trump Star Wars.

And EVERY director has had flops - Spielberg had 1941; Lucas had American Graffiti (which wasn't necessarily a flop, mind you).

And as far as Lucas getting lucky - there's no shame in that; Look at Spielberg and Jaws? Jaws is the only instance that I know of where a film was better than the book. The book is truly awful, what with horrible plotlines such as the Mafia strong-arming Brody because their beach estates are losing money to the whole Moby Dick rip-off ending with Quint getting caught in the lines after harpooning Jaws.

I'm only talking about the first Star Wars film here, not the entire saga. Many people obviously have varying opinions on the whole saga (hell, many wish the prequels were never made), but the influence of the first film is undeniable. It is a great movie. I'm not saying it's the best movie ever made. I've seen better. But it is a magical film, one that resonates for many more reasons than special effects (which, again, were not that groundbreaking considering 2001 came out nearly 10 years earlier). And, did you just say Scott and Cameron suck? I mean, they have made a few stinkers, but I challenge you to name a science fiction film in the last 25 years that's better than Blade Runner. Or an action film in the last 20 years that is better than Terminator 2 (Die Hard is probably better, but T2 is still great). Again, I'm not talking about the quality of the influence. I'm just saying it had an undeniable influence. And saying Lucas was the Bay of the 70's is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever heard (especially since, his, as you might put it, 'money-mongering' didn't really hit full stride until the 1980's). I mean, isn't it obvious that THX 1138 was made to be a box office smash? Oh, that's right, it wasn't made to be one, and it wasn't. And American Graffiti was a box office smash because the film resonated with audiences at the time (hey, waddayaknow, just like Star Wars). All I'm saying is that A. the first Star Wars movie is a great film, period. and B. its influence, for better or worse, is undeniable.

"Lucas was the Bay of the 70s"?!? REALLY!?! you TRULY believe that statement. George Lucas is by no means a great director, but he IS a very capable storyteller. There IS a fundamental reason that STAR WARS sticks with so many of us the way it does. How it crosses taste in movies to the point where most, if not love it, at least find it watchable. Do you think that 5 year olds that watched Armagedon are going to keep watching it until adulthood and want to show thier kids the MICHAEL BAY collection? Star Wars WAS about much more than special effects, there was a very innocent story at the heart of the first movie that resonates with most of us. 2001 has special effects that were superior to STAR WARS and that was 7 years earlier...yes, people ate up the dogfights and wookies but to say that they didn't think it was deep is insulting. Hey, I HATED the prequels but the Star Wars Trilogy still remains a series of movie that I feel I can watch ANYTIME. Never felt that way about a Bay film...

I am a Star Wars fan, and I'm not throwing around hyperbole when I say the impact of the original Star Wars film was huge. It's just a fact. However, I'm not going to go around preaching about my opinions on the films, because I understand Star Wars is a pretty touchy subject for some. But again, objectively speaking, the film had a huge impact. And I've refuted your point about the effects: 2001 came out nearly 10 years earlier, had effects that rivaled, if not bested, Star Wars. The effects work was not that phenomenal. I'm not saying people left the theatre knowing exactly what hit them, but they definitely knew they had experienced something special. Saying that Star Wars resonated because of the effects is like saying the same for E.T. The effects served a great story and both films resonated deeply in audiences. And American Graffiti wasn't a flop. It was a huge success, garnered a number of Oscar nods (including a Best Director nod for Lucas), and inspired Happy Days. THX 1138 was a flop, though. And I don't think Spielberg really got lucky with Jaws, either. The fact that you said the book isn't that great ought to reaffirm the notion that he didn't get lucky. I mean, think about it, if Spielberg was given a great book to adapt and adapted it, he'd be considered lucky. But he took a simple bestseller, changed many of the ideas in it, borrowed a bit from Hitchcock, and made a film with huge pop-cultural resonance.

I'm certainly not going to argue for the prequels. If this movie is only as good as Phantom Menace, I'll consider it a failure.

Butthe original Star Wars had likable, iconic characters who got to do and say things that fleshed them into somewhat realistic (if stylized) human beings. It had the feel of mythology to it, and the plot was hardly busier than any other action-adventure movie. And it actually immersed you in a familiar, but different, mythology and world--what are the chances Transformers will do anything like that? The Star Wars prequels lost it because they abandoned exactly that kind of thinking, the storytelling lagged, the storylines were less classic adventure and more cumbersome, the dialog went from being merely pulpy to being, well, often awful. That looks to be more like what we're getting from Transformers.

It's not just about relationships, though, it's about defining characters with emotional centers. If you can show me any movie by Bay where he successfully juggles more than, say, two characters with distinct personalities and emotional cores to them, I'll be very surprised.

Oh, that's totally fine. If you think Star Wars has had a detrimental impact, I agree on one hand. Most of the crap coming out right now is the byproduct of the successes of Star Wars, Jaws, E.T., Raiders...the early blockbusters. But I'd argue that, unlike a lot of the stuff driven by corporate execs today, many of those original blockbusters were great films in their own right, so I can't really blame Lucas or Spielberg for making a few great, popular films. I'd be more quick to blame money-hungry execs who tried to recapture the formula they developed. But if Star Wars never resonated for you, that's fine.

Harry, could we please get a talkback devoted to the effects of success on your reviews? How the money has directly and indirectly affected the nature of this site? Sorry, man, as much as I am proud of you and congratulate you on Playboy and all the work you do for us, I really felt disserved by the whole Spider-Man 3 thing. I had been under the impression that AICN was partly here to warn us about the turkeys. And I went in to Spider-Man 3 fully expecting it to own. So just what influence DOES success have? And I'm not necessarily talking about the studios giving you goodies so that you will write favorable reviews. How does it effect your choices of what is and what is not a TB? How much do you consider the big budget projects as opposed to the smaller ones? Are you more resistant to tearing a hole in some disgusting project? Wondering if the studio will keep you in the dark next time? Maybe in the back of your head? I'm still very skeptical about Die Soft and it really seemed that Walter B "bought" Vern's opinion on that one with his presence. Vern turned right around. Curious how it looks from your end. How DO you do things differently? Curious.

To each his own, Kloip. I absolutely agree that George Lucas IS a merchandising whore. However I also think that creating a story and making a deal for the merchandising rights so that you can have money to make more movies is QUITE different from making a SHIT movie and getting lucky because alot of stupid people will go see it. Keep in mind, also, that I don't consider Star Wars to be "stupid shit". Has Lucas gone too far? Absolutely...BUT I make an immense separation between young hungry and apparently talented director Lucas of the 70's and the media corporate whore he's become. BAY, on the other hand, has NEVER made a redeemable film.

It's like someone forgot to tell Bay they'd got the actual Transformers license and he didn't need to change everything to avoid a law suit, including covering Optino Prime with flames and giving him a mouth and making Megatino look like he'd been magnetised and taken through a nail factory.

And that's before we even get to the shitty story with its hilarious dog peeing on Autobots gags! How hilarious, my sides will surely split...

...because he was forced to, due to Bruce's tantrums when immersed in seawater. And I know there were studio fights because Benchley raised a ruckus and finally, they wised up and tossed him off the set.

As Seagrass said - if Transformers is HALF as good as Independence Day, I, too, will be quite a happy camper. I fully realize Transformers is a movie based on a toyline; its not Ben Hur. Hell, it isn't even Spider-Man! But everything I've seen so far looks promising that it'll be a fun ride.

And there's aboslutely no shame in that - up on my DVD wall I have Glenngary Glenross and Momento side-by-side with Jurassic Park and Stargate. I like ALL types of movies.

And to be completely honest I totally forgot where I was going with this - so let's talk about the hotness that is Keeley Hazel.

I think Spielberg borrowing from Hitchcock had more to do with the fact that he loves Hitchcock's films than anything else. I mean, the Vertigo shot in Jaws? It shows up again in E.T., and he definitely wasn't forced to put that in there. He just loves giving nods to his favorite filmmakers (or, some might say, stealing from them, but that's a whole different debate).

Spielberg's hands should be kept off scripts, though. The first season of SeaQuest was excellent - a great science-fact show. When the network didn't allow it to find it viewership, Spielberg messed things up by wanting script apporoval and upping the sci-fi junk (the giant alligator thawed from the arctic; the man-eating plant; the whole SeaQuest on an alien-waterworld). By the time Spielberg's damage was done, Roy Schieder wanted nothing to do with, Spieberg walked away from his own mess, and I'm not sure, but I think even Amblin dumped it on the third season.

I will disagree with you on Lost World; I thoroughly enjoyed it but when it comes to dinosaurs I have tunnel-view and tend to ignore things like "plot" in those movies.

Someone mentioned Godzilla above.

I guess it was only a matter of time before that old chestnut surfaced. I personally loved it and have it in my collection; it did everything a Godzilla movie was suppossed to do: had a big, reptilian monster tear-assing through a major city, fighting the Army and raising al sorts of hell.

Yes - the dialogue was utter-shit.

Yes - the baby Godzilla-raptors were a rip-off.

But the FX were some pretty nice eye-candy, still hold up well, and I enjoyed it on that level.

Minority Report was going great until the last 10 mins or so. God, that happy ending was cringe-inducing. But up until then, that was some quality, dark sci-fi shit right there. I'm actually one of the few (or at least it seems like a few) that likes A.I. quite a bit. Sure, it has some problems, but I liked it overall. Haven't seen Amistad. Always wasn't terrible, but it seemed sort of unnecessary. Lost World is not only Spielberg's worst movie, it's a bad movie in general. And Hook. What more can be said of Hook? It's an interesting idea, but the execution is pretty awful. But he has made some really great movies, too. What's unfortunate is that the man seems to be force-feeding us Shia LeBeouf. If Shia is playing Indy's son in the next film, God Himself couldn't make that film work, much less the Berg. If Shia is just some pansy sidekick, it could work, but it'd require Spielberg to totally kick ass in every other respect. But yeah, it's too bad about Indy 4, because I was really looking forward to it before Shia was announced as a cast member.

I have been reading the posts in talkbacks for several years now and I have recognized a pattern that never fails. People glorify the past. Star Wars IV, Raiders, ET, etc.... Yes they were great films and all came out in the late seventies and eighties but do you also remember how many BAD films were also made back then. Maybe Transformers won't be as good as ET or Star Wars but I highly doubt it will be as bad as the horrendous sci-fi films of 2 decades ago like Robocop and many others which I cannot remember right now. My point is don't you think that on an average there are better more varied films being made today than decades ago when a good sci-fi/fantasy film came out once every few years. Star Wars, ET, and the "classics" are the milestones and groundwork for today's science-fiction. Transformers and Spiderman 3 may not be genius but they will be hell of a lot better than Superman IV or He-Man the Movie. Why doesn't anybody realize this.

Is that he often equates the grosses of his movies with their quality. A.I. wasn't a box office smash (it did make its money back, but it wasn't the big hit Spielberg had hoped it would be) and he now doesn't like the film very much. This unfortunately causes him to be a guy who doesn't take a whole bunch of risks. Sure, Schindler's List and Saving Private Ryan were risks, but the sweeping sentimentality in his films is largely the byproduct of wanting his movies to be liked. So, I guess as an extension of this, if Transformers makes a lot of money, one might expect sequels produced by the Berg, for better or worse.

the original Godzilla movies were fun/cheese the remake was crap/shit/cheesey shit. They tried to explain what Godzilla was and how he formed...WHY?!!? Why does everything have to be explained? Add to that the disgustingly bad acting, the crappy script, the crappy action sequences which were ripped off several better movies and you get a shitty film which never reached its potential and did 'alright' at the box office.

My fiance went to a shitty public school outside Detroit. She took a "Modern Novels" class her senior year. Her teacher assigned them A Wrinkle In Time--a book I read in the 4th grade for school. Now, nothing wrong with lighter reading, and that whole series does go some weird places and get kinda complicated.

But get this.

I shit you not, they didn't just READ the book--the teacher had them read along to the book on tape in class. Fucking 17 and 18 year olds sitting there listening to A WRINKLE IN TIME during class for god knows how many weeks. Because she didn't trust them to read it on their own. How fucked is that?

Most of the people I know that aren't fanboys couldn't really give a fuck about it. Not only that, I feel word of mouth is gonna REALLY hurt it. Spider-Man 3 was a movie everyone felt that HAD to see because Spidey 2 was so enjoyable, some people still remember how much THE ISLAND sucked..and in film circles people KNOW Bay is a coked up lunatic that should be directing Aerosmith videos.

Dude, if you think TF is gonna break Spidey-3's record, you're dreaming. I agree it might do very well, but that just isn't gonna happen. Look, mo movie Michael Bay has ever done has grossed more than about 200 million bucks--and Bay has been making movies just like this one for a long time. I admit, this may be his most successful movie ever--it's got a built-in fanbase his other flicks didn't. But how big is that fanbase really? I live in Boston, with about 500,000 people aged 18-30, and I've yet to see any trailer or commercial for this movie get the same kind of applause that Harry Potter or even Die Hard does. Hell, I've heard people start booing the second Bay's name comes on the screen. I will not be surprised if this flick makes 250 million, even 300 million--but 150 mil in 3 days? Not a chance.

I don't have any problems with your opinion at all, but how would you like it if someone judged you on your past failures and nothing else? For example, if Tehgreekhammer couldn't get a girl off with his tongue 9 times out of 10, does that mean he won't ever be able to get a girl off, period? I also seem to remember that The Rock is more well-liked rather than hated. Spielberg has had plenty more failures than Michael Bay, but no one constantly shouts to the heavens "Spielberg? That hack fucking directed Hook! I won't ever go see a Spielberg film again!"
Im not a Michael Bay hater.

I liked the Rock, I liked Con Air, I liked parts of Armageddon, and think that his car chase scene from Bad Boys 2 is one of the biggest and best ones ever put on film.

Is he competely dropping the ball by disregarding the older designs in favor of a mechanical mishmash of stuff?

Absotively.

Will I pay to see this abortion?

hell no.

Ill be giving my money to whatever other movie oopens that weekend and sneak into theater showing this and basking in the mediocrity of Shia Laqueefs acting, and thinking about how Harry sold his soul to promote this turd.

The older designs would never have worked. I'm an old-school TF fan, and I still think that Optimus looked like a pussy in his vehicle form back in the day. Bumblebee looked like a chubby kid holding a pair of doughnuts. The robot designs may be busy, but they look like something that could actually exist in the real world. Now, Skids...there was a REAL Autobot.

I love you each in your own special way.

As I have said before this is a pointless argument. You cannot argue over whether Bay is good or not.

He makes mass produced cheesy popcorn flicks. Is he good at making these MTV style movies? YES. Can anyone dissagree with that? NO.

What you are arguing about is whether you enjoy mass produced MTV style popcorn flicks.

I love every type of film from the smallest world cinema piece to the biggest event movie out there. Some people do not.

I actually think of it as to different interests altogether. The same part of my brain which enjoys a Bay film is not the same part of my brain which enjoys watching the original Solaris.

True a lot of films cross this boundry in someway. You could say that Spiderman and Batman Begins show how small art can come into contact with big ideas and succeed. But there will always be the type of movie which is just pure art and the type of movie which is just pure entertainment.

I don't think anyone including myself who enjoys Bay is pretending he is anything more than he is.

Was the emotion in Armegeddon mass produced, cheesy, written by 11 people in a big room, shallow, false attempt to tug my heart strings? YES. Did it work? YES. The hairs on my neck stood up and I cried when Bruce died. Sorry if I enjoy having a good cry in a movie. It's as much fun as laughing or being scared in my opinion.

This film will have the same false emotion and big action and no-one can say i'm wrong when I say I enjoy that.

Just because it's Bumblebee on the screen, you fucking TransFans should know the voice of Optimus Prime / Peter Cullen! It's deeper than it was back in the mid-80s, but that's his voice. Not to mention, Bumblebee's voice capacitor is damaged back on Cybertron - before the film begins. Bumblebee communicates in a very non-vocal, unorthodox manner throughout the movie. Check your facts, fellas!

I'm not apologizing for it (which so many are nowadays) but I LOVED the animated Transformers movie....LOVED IT! It was much more than a toy commercial to me. 2: The script is probably STILL being altered, bits taken out addeed etc. The script we read was over a year ago or something. I'm sure it will have changed, a lot.

they could just make a live action film with the same plot as the cartoon movie.

That would be crap. There is no earth scenes set anywhere other than Autobot HQ so there would be no sense of scale for the robots. They could all be 2 ft tall. They are only giant robots in relation to us.

Also would you really like to see the musical number on the trash plannet. Robots with beards. A big pink girl bot. A transformer fishing? Imagine how rediculous that would all be live action. Fishing! And you complain about the bots being in Shias back yard?

1. Most action movie scripts I've read actually read BETTER than the end product. Especially those from the 80's (Predator, Robocop, Lethal Weapon). Also the SUPERMAN RETURNS scripts reads very much like what's onscreen. The Star Wars scripts are describtive as well. Generally, you can tell what's gonna happen onscreen from the finished script. 2. Granted, but I'm just taking into account what I've seen of past screenplays that Bay is attached to and what he does with character and emotion. 3. Hell of a generalization. Examples?

what I meant was more of a case of scripts that read like crap but up on screen are great.

I read the script for SinCity and Crank and they where practically unreadable. Crank was downright embarresing but on screen it turned out brilliantly.

And we all know that any number of good scripts can be ripped apart when it comes to shooting. Just look at how many writters try and disasoicate themselves with their work Frank Miller for one.

I don't mind Bumblebee as a 2007 Camaro, which doesn't look like a muscle car to me. He probably should have been a yellow Solstice, though...Jazz would have been perfect as a black Camaro. However, there is no "old" version of the Solstice in existence, so the contrast between the old and new models for Bumblebee's upgrade would have been lost.

could have easily been deeper more interesting movies.

I don't have nearly the same respect for TF as I do for characters which have been around twice as long and have interesting subtext to them.

TF has alwayus been a visual thing for me. I just want the action with some cheesy Bay emotion to help it along.

If you think about it the original TF where not really giant robots in a lot of the cartoons/comics. They didn't interact much with humans and so like I said they where just like normal people. They didn't even change into vehicles a lot of the time. I only think Tf would work live action as a 'what if' type movie. Okay it's not the movie you dreamt of but I don't think a smaller director could have ever given you the visual action the material requires.

Also appreciate your love for the underappreciated Mission Impossible. Classic De Palma. What do you think about MI:III? I thought it was one of the most intense action thrillers I have ever seen but was let down by a cheesy ending (Tom and his missus don't ebven act like they have just been through a terribe ordeal) what is wrong with the way movies used to just end on the last important scene intead of showing you what happens straight after and the next day etc.

I think we'll have to do something that's a rarity here and end a conversation civilly....although I do think it depends entirely on what you mean by "visual action"...Bay certainly doesn't have the license on visual style. I'm just looking for more than a things go smashy smashy flick. I want to care about Optimus Prime...be invested in his struggles in the movie.

was flawless in terms of action. With a bit of an edit; ending the film just after Tom gets shocked back into life (leaving you with the impression that his wife might even leave him for lying to her and putting her in danger) and cutting out 'humpty dumpty sat on the wall' (worst line ever?). The rest of the movie is quite dark and it could be perfect with a bit of chopping.

You know when I think about it anything I know is stuff I learnt myself, not in lectures. There where so many people who did not have the 1st clue when it comes to movies but where very academic and did better than me. I honestly think I knew more about films than anyone else in my class of 70 odd, just smoked too much dope and scraped by with an average degree.

I did a 15,000 word dissertation on the Coen Brothers in the 48 hours before it was due in without any research and just about saved my ass from repeating.

So far the summer has sucked. Spider-man 3 was corny and under whelming. Shrek 3 just not that funny and Pirates 3 was one of the worst movies I've ever seen, like seriously back up and look at the movie, it's horrible. Transformers better rock my balls off or this summer was a waste. I'm hoping LF or DH will kick ass but I really have no idea and Bourne 3 will probably be cool but I'm looking for Transformers to be THAT summer movie that will make me go crazy. Here is to hoping...

pretty much everything I learned about movies and film making, is stuff I learned by myself, outside of class through hands on experience. A lot of my classes and teachers were jokes, they were sometimes more stoned than some of the students, one teacher frequently lectured on the old glory days of being coked out on film sets, specifically mentioning his work on Apocalypse Now, he mentioned was always going off about how many different ways they would sneak coke through customs, and talk about the entire cast and crew of the film were coked out. It made me so irritated, I wanted to learn how to make movies, yet instead was taught how to sneek drugs onto a set. GRRRRR

Transformers will probably be a good summer movie. It's not a sequel. Apart from Robot Jox, I don't there has ever been a film about giant battling robots. The film-makers are trying to create a new continuity, but it appears to be quite far from the source. It will be interesting to see how this pans out.

by AllPowerfulWizardOfOz

You morons who claim that this site has sold out can suck a hot fart out of my asshole. I mean come on. I don't agree with every review this site churns out but that's just crass ignorance on your part to even assume that just because they get invited to sets or inside info, or talk to a director etc etc etc that they are less likely to give a movie a bad review. Did any of you idiots ever think about the banner ads that have been bought over the years of DVDs that got shit reviews from Harry and company? Prime example is Creepshow 3. There has been heavy banner ad traffic from the movie and Harry pissed all over it so the theory that money buys a good review on this site is total garbage. Just because Harry is stoked for Transformers like most of us are does not mean he is a Bay fan or going to give it a glowing review. However going into this movie knowing what it is and what some of us want which is giant robots kicking the fucking shit out of each other and everything in site I am sure it's going to get a decent nod as a fun summer blockbuster that is a must see for it's effects alone, and so fucking what. When Star Wars came out it was about the marvel of the effects and not so much the story but some of you idiots don't remember that. Really if you watch the original movie the acting was terrible, the script was not original at all and all around it was total cheese but it did well because there had never been anything quite like it seen before and we all got attached to those classic characters. Transformers is no different in that the script is cheese, the acting will be sub par but the robots are going to blow our fucking minds away and that's what Bay and company are banking on to put asses in the seats. To call AICN a sellout is a fucking joke.

Believe me I disagree plenty. Eli Roth prime example. Other then that Thanksgiving trailer in Grindhouse I think his movies suck turds and I don't get why Harry is a fan but I am not going to call the guy a sellout for liking him.

I think the line between CGI and Live action is really becoming blurred. This will probably be a half decent film but not pure to the source. I think that we will one day get the Transfomers film we want. Because the G1 base is too big. I see this film as just another alternate reality version, to add to the many alternate reality versions of Transformers that have come out in the last few years. Cybertron, Armada, Beast WArs anyone? I think that's why the film-makers have taken so many libertys. If this film was made ten years ago it would be totally different. I really despair at the movie Megatron, but watching Beast Machines, you can see that he becomes more demonic looking as the versions progressed. You dig?

enough that they will eventually make the TF you want. I'd say the fan base will make up for less than 10% of this films profit. Another 20% of people who liked the original TF but don't care about the changes and then 70% of general public.

I never thought it was as bad as some, but I do wonder what the point of including them was in the first place? I mean, why not just go with a solid red design? It would make more sense if realism is desired, as I've seen big red rigs on the road, but I've never seen one with flames. Also, it would just look better. Still, as long as Prime is not made out to be a chump in the movie -- which to me would require him having no equal other than megatron -- then I guess it'll be okay.

I couldn't tell exactly which year, though so good call. They started that wrap around rear window in 75? The 74' and earlier had the rear window like my 70' if I'm not mistaken. The bottom line is they both share the same 2nd "generation" body so in that respect they are indeed alike.

First of all my intention with the initial Polesmoker comment was directed at the fanatical DonMurphy/Transformers fans that post over @ The otherfat bastards website.

talk about fanatical fans. Those guys think everything coming out of Bays camp is "FUCKING AWESOME!!!" Its like theyre mindless drones who just repeat the same damn thing over and over again. "GIANT FUCKING ROBOTS" "THANK YOU MICHAEL BAY" etc.etc.etc.

Its like a collective mind over there. Disobedience or a differin opinion will not be tolerated.

What I said was it seems like those mindless drones made a concerted effort to come over here to "enemy territory" and flood the TB's with overwhelmingly positive posts about how great this movie is going to be with its explosions, and giant fucking robots.

you can only read the same catchphrases so many times before you get sick of them.

If you are one of those fanatical Don Murphy/Michael Hack Bay cult members then yes, my barb was directed at you. But if you are as you say, just a TF fan wanting to give this movie a chance, before you shit all over it, then my polesmoker comment was not directed at you.

Ive become numb to lines like "My parents will freak out if they see you" only because hollywood has been spewing corny cheesy unfunny lines like that for as long as i can remember. It sounds like something an 11 year old girl would say to something theyre hiding from their parents. I cant think of any 18-19 year dude saying that, only in hollywood land. I dont know why they have to keep regurgitating stale lines like this, but its a live action transformers movie so i have to let it slide. It seems that alot of pg movies have the demand for such dialogue.

Yeah, people will go see it. But how big will this movie really be? I don't see it being that huge. The studio thinks they have a guaranteed hit on their hands, but... for people who don't know anything about the transformers (of which there are many, which is why the movie is aimed at them) according to what is presented in the trailers, they have no idea what the hell is going on. NO plot is presented in any of the trailers. There's no way to tell what this movie is abot.
It has a major studio push behind it for one...

people can either enjoy Bays films or not stomach them. I like more complex films but I also like going on big dumb rollercoaster rides.

I suggested to Harry and Quint that they choose 4 of us to review the film when it comes out in the following catagories: 1: Bay hater/TF fanboy 2: Bay lover/TF indifferent 3: Baylover/TF fanboy (probably the most intruiging combination) 4: Bayhater/TF indifferent.

Because this is why there have been so many arguments - someone who can't stand Bay is not going to start loving him and someone who has no interest in TF is not going to care about design choices.

Ths way 4 of us would get to review from a different point of view and it would be our reward/send of for what has been a TB event over the last year.

They like the idea and I've emailed them with specifics but we'll have to see if they get round to setting it up.

different due to the fact that they tried to deal with a serious subject. That type of dialouge is made for Armageddon etc not for a war film.

I'm not saying his dialouge is subtle or realistic, it is cheesy and each line has clearly been thought over until it gets the bigest laugh/cry from your 15 yr old movie goer.

It matches the editing, action, sound, music in the fact that it is constucted by lots of people with infinate money to make every aspect as commercially succesful as possible.

If they made a computer which could write a script and asked it to write a big budget cheesy action movie it would write a Bay style script.

Every aspect is well done and very poilshed and there are no rough effects or shots but it has a complete lack of any human input.

Juggernaut is supposed to be Xavier's brother, Juggernaut wears the helmet for the same reason Magneto wears a helmet, to block Xavier from messing with his head. The Phoenix is supposed to be an alien being from outer space. Xavier would never have tampered with someone's head the way he did in the movie. The Phoneix kills Cylcops in the Movie... I could go on, but those are my biggest problems

i just didnt like how fake hulk looked in about 70% of the movie. it took me right out of the action, just thinking how cartoony he was. My favorite scenes, were when he looked the most realistic: if remember corectly- most of the desert sequences and in san francisco where hot ass jen conelly shows up.

ever really look that real. Even if they spent years and made it perfect your mind would still say 'hey that looks odd and out of place. I thought the effects in Hulk where spot on.

As I always say if I can watch a stop-motion gorrila in the original Kong and not get taken out of the film then I can deal with slightly less than perfect CGI.

film via numerous, numerous talkbacks basically reiterating the same tired shit ad-nuaseum, I thought I would attempt to share something tonight that actually matters.

Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to speak for a brief moment, if I may, about scotch. A scant few of you know of my predilection for this sweet nectar. You would also know that while my wife and I both share said love of scotch, she prefers blends and I prefer single malts. Well, no more. I picked up something new tonight. I became enamored. I had her take a sip. Her eyes lit up. She actually said "fuck blends, I'm drinking this from no on." Harmonious tightness. I recommend this single malt to you all.

maybe its a lil ironic but its not a cartoon anymore as soon as its being made into a live action movie. even if it came from a fuckin jo blo gum wrapper. It certainly matters that it looks as realistic as possible, or they wouldnt be blowing half of the movies' budget into the CGI alone.

as technology, money and most of all time would allow at the time the film was made.

People think CGI is easy or something, like the computers do most of the work and that when the CGI is not up to 100% perfection it was a case of whichever artist just wasn't as observent as your average movie goer.

People never slagged effects like this when they where practical because you could easily visualize the time and effort it would take to put them together. Doing something on a computer is a lot more time consuming than even stop-motion was.

Look at the source material when you starte demamding Realism about a guy who gets bitten by a radioactive spider, Blast of radiation, Aglo-Saxon aliens, radiated families and Sentient Robots from outer space, how hard is it for you at any point to suspend reality. If superman can run around in prime colors how hard is it to believe any other costume would be any more or less rediculous.

Before CGI people would make a film

and then add the action into the structure of the film. Now because of CGI they seem to think up a lot of big set pieces first and then film around them.

But anyone who says we would be better off without CGI is wrong. I've seen too much I thought I'd never get to see when I was young- dinosaurs, the hulk, spidey swinging through newyork etc. It was all in my head and I remember actually thinking it would never happen. Then I saw Terminator 2 and my face lit up.

Good to see some Ang Lee Hulk Lovin'! That movie was da' shizznet and too good for a summer release; it was a mega-budget arthouse flick and I can appreciate what Ang Lee tried to do - hell the editing alone was art.

I'm pretty stoked for the latest Hulk too. I know a lot of people loved Bana, but I think Ed Norton is going to be a much better Banner.

We need an R-Rated She-Hulk movie with some bra-bursting momentum.

The effects look amazing and, really, Michael Bay is perfect for a story that is nothing more than giant metal toys blowing each other up. And whoever posted about the Knocked Up scene...that was actually on Funny or Die this week. It's Michael Cera and Judd Apatow doing a goof on the I Heart Huckabees stuff.

It sucks more than watching an ex-girlfriend makeout with a different guy. It sucks more than Britney Spears' parenting skills. What I'm saying is, this script sucks. OK...Just grow up people...enjoy it for what it is. And if you wanna blame anyone for the new Transformer designs blame Hasbro...Michael Bay really didn't have much to do with it. Hasbro wanted to make more money by being able to produce more toys with new designs. Besides which the new designs KICK ASS. Sure I was disappointed when I heard they would be different, but I like the idea now. Change is good sometimes. And I have a comment for the guy who said he just saw a Sideswipe animation...first of all you are a frickin moron...it wasn't sideswipe despite what the post said...which tells me you are NOT a Transformers fan to begin with. And secondly, I severely doubt that it was done by ILM. MORON!!!! If you are a true fan you will watch the movie, shut your mouth and enjoy it. It's merely a new aspect of your favorite cartoon. Suck it up and shut up.

I don't have a problem with new designs, I have a problem with shitty new designs. And Bay has claimed responsibility for them himself--if you think Hasbro told him the designs had to look like cars that had been frozen, shattered, and then stuck together by a fourth grader into vaguely humanoid shapes, you are incorrect, sir.
