Galactica
by Manaqua

In a fantasy world both parties would sit down and agree to do a simultaneous two-pronged story arc (similar to Shadows) where the TV and movie plots could at some point intersect and give a different perspective or larger view than the other. Continuity between the TV and Movie productions IMHO is important. I would be put off by two different Galacticas even though I'm a fan from way back. At the very least I'd have to choose one and call it the "authority". This way fans of one would have to watch the other. Continuity. Here's to fantasies.
Galactica & Count Iblis

In my opinion, Count Iblis was simply THE finest character to EVER appear in Galactica - main cast or otherwise (although I admit to a great liking for Starbuck)! If he is indeed in the trailer - then this is great news! It's a shame that Patrick MacNee is too busy, but you can't have everything I suppose (maybe he's a little TOO old to reprise the role anyway)! Now, from reading this, it's VERY CLEAR that Richard Hatch knows his stuff - and begs the question - why is that Moyer dick in charge of the movie, when he obviously doesn't know jack shit!? I must confess to having never read Hatch's BG novels, although the one involving Count Iblis has ALWAYS been on my list. I REALLY DID want to know more about this guy - and now, via the trailer - it seems we will! Bring it on, guys!!

I think Barry Van Dyke should reprise his role as Lieutenant Dillon. He was great as St. John Hawke in Airwolf. I don't believe the "Battlestar Galactica" franchise could survive without him. I also hope Glen Larson casts a bunch of his grand-children as extras. That would be great. You know what would be really cool, a sucky "V" movie...

The problem with all of these remakes that are going on right now is the fact that everyone wants to put their own little "devices" in them so that they can sit back and say "See, I changed it". More often than not, this makes the whole thing seem completely different, and loses its charm. If you are going to remake something, or "continue it" make only sensible changes, such as updating technology if they take place after the original, but don't rebuild the whole thing. Continuity is the best way to go, IMO, so here's hoping that they don't mess up BG!

Thanks to Glen's reports from last week, I spent most of this past weekend watching "Battlestar Galactica" episodes on videotape and am more in love with the series than ever. Mad props to all who believe that a Galactica revival should feature Count Iblis, who was definitely the most compelling guest character as played by Patrick MacNee. Regarding Richard Hatch's trailer, which features Richard Lynch in the role of Iblis, I say why bother recasting - even if it is only a promotional trailer? Lynch should be very familiar to Galactica and Buck Rogers fans, since he played heavies in several episodes of each series. The problem with using him as Iblis is that Iblis was NOT a heavy; he was a crafty, beguilingly handsome, soft-spoken, calculating, otherworldly sorcerer. There is nothing physically imposing about MacNee (except for his penetrating eyes), but I guarantee that you would not want to meet Lynch in a dark alleyway. The man has "frightening" written all over him. As wonderful as Lorne Greene (Adama) and Lloyd Bridges (Cain) were, their roles COULD be recast in a Galactica revival, if necessary. But not Iblis. MacNee OWNS that role and could never be replaced. I say let the magificent "War of the Gods" two-parter from the original series stand on its own if MacNee is not available to reprise his role in a Galactica revival. He is irreplaceable. But I'm behind Richard Hatch's camp ALL THE WAY for a movie/television revival. I say the spoils should go to the victor who has worked the hardest/longest to achieve them, and Hatch has been behind this franchise for a lot longer than Glen Larson decided to take another look. Hatch is a loving, doting stepfather; Larson is the deadbeat dad who's only now discovering that his offspring might be worth some cash.
The "new" Galactica

I have to agree with some of the sentiment towards creating a 'new' Galactica. If you're going to do Galactica, then dammit, do Galactica. If you want to do something else DO SOMETHING ELSE. Don't change everything and stick the name on it. There's already too much of that going on in Hollywood as it is. It would be nice to see both camps sit down and decide to play nice before this develops into another James Bond / Spiderman legal battle (but from what I'm hearing, that ain't gonna happen). As for MacNee, I'm sure he'd be willing to do a film / television appearance if there was actual cash involved. While the "trailer" was in production Mr. MacNee was a hot property because of that awful "Avengers" film. I don't think he's got as many "commitments" on his plate at the moment, if you follow my meaning. Galactica has a lot of untapped potential and could be revived into something very, very cool but I'm afraid the material that Hatch has shot may be all that gets done for a very long time. If it looks like too much of a hassle, Universal may just bag the whole thing (I don't care what Larson says, Universal DOES have some say in the matter). KJB http://www.bstagepass.com

Assuming the Moyer/Larsen movie isn't just hype, bluff and bullshit, I strongly urge Richard Hatch and Glen Larsen to bury their feud and collaborate on the movie. It seems from what Moyer said to AINT IT COOL NEWS, the producers are interested in continuity, so I hope some of the original cast will be asked to be involved in some way. We want a great comeback with some involvement from the original cast, so I hope both Hatch and Larsen will cut the bitching, and the original Apollo will be in this movie. Think of making a great movie, guys, and forget the ego war.

Daggits! There must be Daggits! Huge, rampaging Daggits that crush Cylons beneath their massive paws! Yes, I'm stating that I want a movie with Daggits the size of ATATs (SW:ESB). It doesn't have to be a BG movie. It can even be a parody of scifi movies. But I want huge rampaging Daggits, dammit.

If Richard Hatch really wants to get a lot of buz about this, he should post the trailer on the web someplace. I would love to see it. I always felt that BG was kind of lame when compared to Star Wars or Star Trek, -although I still watched it growing up. I think a new version that takes advantage of all the modern day special effects could really kick ass. But please, it's time to put dagget to sleep.

I'm no legal expert, but isn't Richard Hatch going to have a fairly hard time getting BG2 off the ground when Glen Larson owns the property? And I've heard of promotional films, but hiring real actors to perform in a TRAILER and not a full-blown pilot strikes me as an effort in futility. I like GALACTICA (not as much as when I was a young'un); I like Richard Hatch--he was one of the better actors in an otherwise dopey cast. But Mr. Hatch seems to be living in some sort of la-la land with this one. I think it's time he moves on, before it gets REALLY sad. Waitaminute... what about a STREETS OF SAN FRANCISCO movie?!

Hatch can't legally post the trailer on the web just like he can't legally show it at conventions because of the damn actors union. But then again, I bet his production company doesn't have Lucas-type security. Sorry about all the daggit-crap, but a.) I really like daggit and b.) my job sucks and this is the only creative outlet I have. I hate being a grown-up.

If Battlestar Galactica returns to the screen, OK, but I'm not sure that I would watch. I've seen the reruns of the old show. Basically it consisted of Cylons attacking week-after-week (with a few exceptions)... and of course the good guys always won. Not very interesting. It's the Gilligan's Island syndrome: The show resets every week to it original starting position, with the heroes never reaching their ultimate goal, otherwise the show would end. I'd like to see a fresh original series, something that challenges the mind and asks difficult questions... much like the original Star Trek, or Babylon, or the Twilight Zone.

And that's why I LOVE keeping up with the news about it! (No, I'm serious.) This is so utterly UNcool that it's (almost) cool. (I mean, please, what "normal" person gives a crap about BG?? How many of us here have discussed this with a PWAL -- "Person With A Life" -- about this? Not me, sir!) Regarding the trailer, could Richard "La La Land" Hatch legally put up still images from it on the Web along with the script? Would that violate the SAG rules?

I used to like the old TVshow, so know that this isn't coming from someone harboring a grudge against some derivative 1970's wannabe product. Still, there was enough that was phony, silly, dated and wrong about the original Galactica that changes are not just inevitable, but absolutely necessary. Flashy new effects will not cut it. A lame reunion premise won't either. Every tv show has done it, and it usually winds up awful (CHIPS 1998!). Now, I'm glad that Richard Hatch believes so strongly in this. Heck, someone has to. But by bringing out the war-wounded from the original series, we know this is just one more 'Return To Mayberry'. My advice: Thanks, but it's time to tell the story a new way, with a new approach.

To do this new BG thing right, they should reanimate the corpse of Lorne Greene, and have him dance around with a vacume cleaner and a can of Brisk Ice Tea. "That's Brisk Baby!" Oh man, I think I drank way too much cough syrup.
New Movie/TV

I recently watched the series on tape, even the Galactica 1980 eps. Corny, dated, laughably derivitive, simplistic, awkwardly, self-consciously futuristic, yes. But still fun. I loved the series when it originally ran. I saw count iblis in my dreams...i was 12, the man scared me! Watching it anew 20 years later, I remember I always liked Starbuck, thought Serena should never had died, and always thought Sheba was a horrible name. Then Galactica 1980, such a bastardization, Chips in Space with those jet cycles, and those f***in kids...the only good one was the Starbuck episode, but even that sucked. The Cylon was totally unbelievable...and Dr Z or X or whatever can bite me. So now there's talk of Battlestar Galactica coming back. How to do it, who should do it. Is Glen Larson THE MAN, or can Richard Hatch do it? should he? Should they redo it (Glen)? Wing Commander was fun sci-fi...not a lot to chew on, but very Galactica in feel in flight deck and things...Moyer could probably do it justice. I like Hatch's initiative, but where does he get off doing these things? Just because noone else did. This whole thing has lain dormant except for his efforts, until now, as it gets "hot" again. I'd like to see this: It is 20 years since the ragtag, fugitive fleet first fled the Cylon Tyrany. Many have died, but the quest continues. Over the years, word of the Pegasus filters back to the Galactica, and presumably vice-versa, but they've always missed each other. Apollo leads Galactica and the fleet (Hatch), but with the 20th anniversary there is talk of settlement, as there was at the 10th when some broke free, when Adama died. His coma lasted a long time, he was heard to mumble, troy, dylan, something Z, scouts...he didn't make any sense. The Pegasus is now commanded by a son of Cain's, Seth (played by Bruce Boxleitner, to hook the B5ers), and they have tracked a vessel that appears to be of human origin, yet it's alien. They've never seen anything like it...but they also, finally, have picked up Galactica...and the fleet...in the opposite direction! What to do?! Galatica sends out a mid-range destroyer (one of the ships they've built on the journey) commanded by General Starbuck. Seth picks up the signal, sends a fuel shuttle to the destroyer and takes off for the other ship. It turns out to be the U.S.S. Voyager, who welcome Seth on board like long lost kin. They're trying to get back to earth, too, you see. But Starbuck thinks it's a plot, and kills Henry Kim...but it's not the real Voyager, it's another one from the demon planet, and...oh, never mind.

Glen Larson just sees some money in all this. He doesn't care about BG. Universal owns the BG rights lock, stock and barrel and Larson has NO SAY in what they do with it and no power to offer the property to anyone. Period. Larson has a reputation of being a greedy @#*&!, you can just ask Donald Belasario about what he did to him over MAGNUM PI! The inside word around hollywood for years was that Larson made DB give him co-creator billing (and half the fees) since Larso at the time had development deals with the nets and never did a damn thing other then cash checks.

OK - disclaimer first: Just to let you all know that I'm an absolutely HUGE fan of BG and have stuck with it throughout the twenty-odd years it has been around. I'm prepared to defend it to ANYONE who will listen (Life, or no Life) - except G:80, which is indefensible by anyone's standards. ...and it is BECAUSE I am such a huge fan of the show that I have to say DONT DO IT!! NONE of the treatments I've heard so far for a BG revival sound at all any good. I'm sorry, but there it is. I **ESPECIALLY** DO NOT want to see Larson involved in ANY way, shape, or form. I admire Hatch for his dedication, and totally respect everything he's done to bring this show back. You may think this revival has only been a recent thing, prompted by Larson, or even STAR WARS, but I happen to have been following Apollo's revival on the net since there ever was a net! -and, yes, Mr Hatch, I HAVE sent a letter to Universal, but I STILL don't think you should do it... So I ABSOLUTELY would LOVE to see BG brought back, but ONLY IF IT IS DONE RIGHT THIS TIME!!!! And lay off daggets - they're for the kids (DUH!), ok!!??

The interest to resurrect this franchise is definitely cool and worth it. The two parties with differing creative ideas should gel and create something that would be worth the time, discussion, brainwaves, effort, and arguments. Come on people, this is sci-fi fantasy. Don't insult everybody by making such a big deal out of it that the fans who will spend their time and cash have to wait for however long, to see something that could potentially be horrible. There is nothing worse than bad sci-fi. Its hard enough to enjoy sci-fi fantasy at my age. But if they get it right, Galactica could be really, really cool. They should pick up the storyline before the abysmal 1980 crap, and, like they couldn't start the Trek movies without Kirk, Galactica without Apollo will be early warning signs of over zealous producers out to cash in on Star Wars hype.

Hatch has got it right: tell a good story. Larson and the movie project don't understand that from what I've read. WC was boring and so was Barbwire. All flash and no substance...where was the intelligence? Gallactica is a human story and not a space combat story. We all knew the same spaceFX were repeated in the show, but we loved Apollo, Starbuck, Boomer, and the Cylons. Everyone talks about Count Iblis, not the space battles because that's what is really fascinating. Sure better FX is more entertaining, but story and characters are the backbone of success. BG did have some stinker stories, but that was the late 70's and family entertainment. Today, Hatch will have to smarten up and be a little hipper and darker with the plots. BG has a great premise based on the Egyptian/Greek mythos that should provide many unique story lines. Hatch also seems to have the backing of some very talented people. I think Larson and his movie is going to get too caught up in FX and space fights and forget that the story was of an outnumbered resourceful group trying to survive genocide. I didn't read anything about that...just cool space battles and bridge designs (yawn). How cool can it be for 40mil and compete with Episode1? Hatch has got the right idea of mixing old with new. Hell put Jeff Bridges in as Cain's son for an episode or two or even Beau...I don't care maybe it would be fun for them. Also if I remember there were a lot more girls than normal that used to watch the show...hmmm female pilots as equals? Romance? Starbuck? BG wasn't so dumb and I think if Hatch can entice the female crowd that watches Xfiles and Trek then he'll survive. I think Hatch is on the right track, but does he have enough to get there?

I only watched a couple of episodes of BG when I was a kid and maybe 1 episode since then, but I still remember the show and it still sticks with me! I just sincerely hope Richard Batch and co. get it together and redo it soon....man Star wars in the theatres and Galactica on T.V again...I almost feel it's the early 80's again! But my main question is who thought of those funky left-right moving head lights of the cylons and the cool sound effects for it! Way to cool...In 20 years I haven't forgot that sound...maybe because the producers of Knight Rider ripped it off and put it on the hood of K.I.T.T's car! Come back Galactica!!!!!!!!
