Boy, was THAT a mistake! I know, I know, every @sshole was telling me how absolutely AWFUL the thing was, but I just HAD to get it, despite the MANY warnings not to buy it. (like driving past a car wreck, you just GOTTA look) How the mighty (Frank Miller) have fallen. Wow. It's like he's writing a bad parody of "Frank Miller". Repetitive and boringly banal dialogue, a non-existent plot and HORRIBLE interpretations of iconic and heroic characters. (I want to kill EVERY character in the book!) What a HUGE fiasco! Seriously, this is EASILY the WORST comic-book I have EVER read. For shame, Frank, for SHAME...

About some mobster that murders this lady's husband. Well the mobster gets sent to prison for the murder and the dead guy's wife visits him to tell him that "I love you, and I want you to accept Christ into your life." While the message is good and all, I don't think anyone who's had a spouse or loved one killed by someone will go up to that person and tell them they love them. Fuck, I'd commit an act of vengeance, Ezekiel 25:17 style.

Needless to say, most religious comics are preachy pieces of crap to tell you that this such and such religion is the one religion and that anything else is Satanic.

I know this isn't about comics but.......

...the giant cleavage, the fact that the women are bound up looking distressed and disgusted and the slime on Black Cat's boobies is. I think it's the most disgusting thing Marvel's done in a long time. It's a book with strong female leads and the only way they can think to sell it is completely objectifying them on the cover. That's the kind of thing that keeps women and children away from comics.

The team has been battling blood thirsty monsters, magic users and demons for the last year but this was the first issue that actually had nice creepy horror feel to it. That was due mostly to the excellent artwork by Scott Hampton. The issue was a great set of little coming attractions of various villains plotting in the shadows and to my mind actually makes an interesting jumping on point for new readers. If you haven't read the book before I suggest you read this one at the shop. Sadly, the only part of the book I didn't like was the cover which felt lack luster and gave the false impression it was all about Zauriel.

Not to nitpick, but I'm pretty sure that Newuniversal ISN'T a limited series.

As far as I know, the book isn't taking a break at issue #6 because this is the half-point intermission. It's breaking because Marvel wants to give Ellis & Larocca a chance to catch up. Again, all solicits have suggested that its an ongoing.

If you would have read the review instead of getting all huffy about the title header and immediately zipping to the TBs, you'd see that I commented on how respectful the writer is to the character of Jesus. It really isn't disrespectful at all. It simply utilizes a historical figure in an imaginative, fun, yet respectful way.

Burchett is much better suited for titles that deal with more cartoony subject matter. Granted some SHE-HULK issues do qualify, but this issue in particular doesn't. I suggested BATMAN & SUPERMAN ADVENTURES type cartoon adaptations in the review and stick by it.

...in the ADVENTURES books that I've read as I did in SHE-HULK (I dropped the book with #16). He seems to be drawing SHE-HULK in the Bruce Timm style which is very mis-suited but I also think he's just a weak artist in general - lack of depth, weird faces, disjointed action, too many small panels.

That Newuniversal review took five paragraphs to outline two sentences worth of relevant info. Dude, you seem to be an intelligent and competent writer. Now tell me what the book is ABOUT and why you didn't like it. Don't say "Justice does something vague" in the middle of the review and spend the rest of the review telling us that Marvel's getting cutesy with using actors as character reference and that future trade sales are overshadowing single-issue storytelling. We KNOW that. I just want to know what the book's about and if it was well-executed, and you really gave us no idea other than "Justice does something." I know you have a better review in ya, man!

PRO: I'm right there with you on She-Hulk. I haven't actually been feeling this book in at least a year. I wondered if last issue was really THE last issue, since it says "continued in Hulk" at the end and there is no next-issue blurb of any type. Since it has been poor on all levels (no offense to Slott, I like most of his work), I wasn't surprised or even upset to see my once-favorite book possibly cancelled.

CON: H4H? Really, not so great. The art is a little better, but for a book that once had outstandingly stylish art, it's still pretty lacking. And I feel the characterization has really suffered, with the single exception of Shang-Chi and Tarantula. I don't like the "new" Humbug so far, I am bored with everything else. This one remains on the precipice of getting dropped with me, another of my once-favorite books to decline.

And I agree that the latest New Universal was the first one to be "whatever." Not bad, but not as involving as the previous issues. Justice killing everyone was interesting, though, and I think this will end up being one great maxi-series when it's all done.

I think there is a difference between advocating a respect of people's beliefs vs. being uptight about it. I wondered the same thing, but I checked with Marvel and She-Hulk is tentatively scheduled all the way to issue #23, in January of 2008. She has a two tie-ins before that (21 and 22) to the "Rise of the Defenders" event, and I'm SURE her place it will be absolutely crucial...absolutely...mostly.

I noticed that blurb too at the end of SHE-HULK and wondered the same thing. With SLott on AVENGERS THE INITIATIVE, I wonder if he's just given up on his flagship title. I'll have to check the solicits to see if further issues of SHE-HULK are advertised.

And yes, I am really starting to love H4H. There's something about offbeat team-ups and groups that I have a fondness for. I like the little things that are happening. Black Cat's immediate assumption that Paladin felt her up while she was unconscious (which he probably did). The fact that Shang Chi is losing control of his martial arts and going nuts especially when he is around Tarantula is pretty cool too. Seeing someone who has been portrayed as Shang Chi has (very muhc in control and uptight even**man that words being thrown around a lot in this talkback**) just letting loose and showing how much damage he can actually cause is pretty cool. I agree, Humbug's transformation was a bit unsettling, but I like it that he's been revamped into a more powerful player. His role as comic relief was getting a bit stale. Agreed, this isn't the best of the best, but I think it has taken a turn for the better since Zeb Wells came on board. For a while, I was wondering why this team had all of these characters since, despite the differences in uniforms, they all pretty much acted the same. Wells has these guys acting distinct and is giving everyone something interesting to do. Palmiotti and Gray didn't seem to want to do that and chose on focusing on one or two characters a month. To me, Wells is taking advantage of the large cast and giving them all something to do that is relevant to the plot.

And c'mon, when Moon Boy is being dragged away by the Heroes and Devil Dinosaur is forced to choose between her friend or her eggs. That's some heartbreaking stuff.

I know what "sacrilegious" means.
by SleazyG.
May 30th, 2007
01:18:25 PM
I also know that since everyone's beliefs are different, so are everyone's standards for what is and isn't. Hell, I'm an atheist, so nothing's sacrilegious to me, but I still find things tasteless, offensive or unnecessary when religious beliefs are handled inappropriately. Just like everybody else, though, I couldn't begin to describe where those limits are--I just know how I react when I see something. So just because one person automatically assumes it's sacrilegious doesn't mean the next person will be bothered. It's just the way things work, folks, and there's no getting around it, so you might as well get past it. Either that, or you need to get just as pissed off about the portrayals of the Greek, Roman, Norse, Indian, and Egyptian gods in comics, cartoons, movies, etc. in order to maintain consistency.
Play nice, folks.

Wow, thanks for the lecture on tolerance. Thanks also for the Miss Manners dissertation. Let me know when AICN gets back to being AICN instead of the Nazi Politeness Party you think it should be. If you think that post was an indication of my 'uptightness', if you will, then you haven't been paying attention to my posts these last few weeks. I am a RUDE motherfucker if I’m feeling it nothing more. (and that post was was what is known as ‘sarcasm’ in case you missed it)

Furthermore, I'll have you note that 2 of the 3 religions I mocked (which Buddha himself would have laughed at) clearly and definitively declare me and all like me as abominations in the eyes of God that should be stoned (as in, beaten with one, not the kind I like to be) to death upon sight. So forgive me if I respond with vitriol to a demand of respect for something that declares me offensive to all creation. (Now THAT line was what is called ‘irony’ since forgiveness is an axiom of Christianity you see?)

There's actually a bloke in my town who makes low budget exploitation movies and they get shown at a cinema. One of them was actually called Jesus Christ: Vampire Hunter and about Jesus returning to earth to fight vampires. He should sue these guys, if he isn't actually involved.

Makes a great viewing night when paired with "For your Height Only", an immensely low-budget Filipino spy flick with a 2-foot tall hero (play a drinking game with how many times he hits a villain in the nuts, everyone will be passed out before the movie's over) Now I don't know about your friend pulling a lawsuit on this comic, I thought the idea of Ann Rice suing the makers of Underworld was a bit far-fetched. Apparently Slott can only write two books a month and got offered one of his top five characters, so with all the Spidey titles changing hands I'm betting he's writing AMAZING. Count me pleased as punch - I've loved SHE-HULK but it's been a while since I've fully enjoyed it, and I reckon Dan Slott's the one guy I trust to sort out Spider-Man.

Reminds me of another Marvel fiasco called the Spider-Man clone saga. Although on a much grander scale! And it continues to make all of Marvel's books mostly unreadable. We can only hope that the Hulk kills off all of them in WWH, and harmony is restored by the Watcher. :D hah

Fear Agent is an awesome book! It reminds me of alot of the Weird Science EC stories, although it's underlying core is different. It does have that same flavor that those old stories had. My only complaint is that it's taken so long to get a reboot from a different publisher. In this age of "outta sight, outta mind", I only hope it doesn't hurt the sales of the book to be gone so long.

I don't personally hang out with Lee Demarbre. He just lives in my town and films all his movies here. His films are shown at the type of cinema that I believe you Americans call a 'grindhouse'. He shows up for the premieres and hangs out. A lot of people I know worked on JC: VH, and had a blast. If you really like the El Santos character you should check out Harry Knuckles. He's in those movies, too.

I'm sorry, she's a good actress, but hot is not an adjective I associate with Jodie Foster. NELL sealed the deal with me and ruined the poop girl forever in my book of stars I'd like to bang, but even when she tried to play the seductress in MAVERICK she failed miserably.

He's not actually a eunuch character. There have been several dating/sex scenes shown or implied in previous stories involving him. Now Uatu has never had anything like that implied.

...it just seems to me the concept of J.C vs. vampires is ripe with possibilitys. mostly due to the fact that most vampire lore is so closely tied to the church. holy water, crosses all of that. which brings me to the question: if vampires are afraid of the cross, or unable to look at it or whatever, how does that work in this context? i mean, i don't know if vampires dislike the cross simply because it's a symbol or if it goes deeper to what the cross represents. because if so, shouldn't it "hurt" vampires just to look at jesus? because it seems to me he is the reason the cross whould have any power as a symbol in the first place.

...Uatu is the Watcher. Norrin Radd is the Silver Surfer (Stan thus inventing the slang term "Rad!"). The Surfer, ridiculously, dated Alicia Masters in some poorly done comics because many comic writers are still no more subtle than comic writers were in the fifties. I don't think the Watcher ever dated anybody, although the NATIONAL LAMPOON once had this hilarious story where supposedly several "real" writers tried scripting the Surfer. In the one contributed by Charles Bukowski, the Surfer, now known as Silver Chinawski, and the Watcher shared a grungy apartment in LA where they took to booze, gambling and poetry and shared a 3 way with an alcoholic woman.

I just found Salvador at my LCS this weekend - excellent, gorgeous stuff! Here's hoping they keep things wordless. And I have to wonder if that may be the next big movement: in response to decompression, the rise of the writer, and general over-talkiness we get a number of books going completely silent. Korgi's also a book which is completely silent, and wasn't Robots vs. Zombies on the silent side too?
Glad you liked Salvador

It is afun read. Zombies v Robots was relatively silent, but it did have the robots speaking to one another. I'd love to see the return of the old silent comics. I think it would be a true challenge for these writers who are so much in love with their own words.
