I wonder how he gets the scar? I predict Batman gores part of his face(the rough scarring) and Joker tops it off within the Exacto Knife curls at the edges of the smile.

Simply put, Bale is the best you can hope for. Chris is a master craftsman. It's almost too good for the people. As watered down as movies are. It's a rarity that we get to see a grand project. I'm going out on an edge here but I'll say this will blow peoples hair back! e.g. Jordan out on the court playing during his peak! Words can't come to mind about this project. This is what film is supposed to be when it's done right! I haven't been this excited about a picture since Bagger Vance. Now, of course I was let down w/ that one. Being a die hard Redford fan and having been one of the few books I had read before the film. But I get the feeling about this one justthesame. Man am I fucked up on soma's right now and attempting to type is a bitch to say the least.

I really liked Spidey 2 a lot but there's no way I can say it's better than the foundation of all comic book movies, Donner's Superman. As for the camp factor, it's going to be there. It's hard for any movie where your main character throws on tights to fight crime not to be a little campy. Even so, all you have to do is read the source material, which is your silver age Superman comic books and the movie, if anything, toned down the campiness from the comics. Spidey 2 might be a top 5 comic book film but it hasn't dethroned Superman.

. That's why it'll never be the best. That and Lois Lane is annoying. In fact all the superheroes love interests are annoying. Let's face it. There just aren't many good comic book adaptations out there. i think Spidey 2 is the best, but it could surely be outdone. Hopefully Nolan can pull it off. And Yes Batman Begins is like a Mamet film. All the characters speak in monotone, and the actors dispaly very little emotion. Which is not a bad thing, but Mamet is an accuired taste. Spartan Rules! Batman Begins has its moments (the rescue at Arkham Asylum being the highlight for me), but I much prefer Batman Returns. People often slate it for its daftness, but Burton knew it was a mistake to take the Batman world too seriously. Burton made a fantasy film (also, a fantastic freakshow of oddballs and misfits), whereas Nolan justs beats you over the head with exposition.

Pheifer's Catwoman was a HUGE plus for the movie. So hot. DeVito's Penguin was a psychotic, circus freakshow runnin' pervert. How cool is that? Plus, any Batman movie where they can make the Penguin seem like a threat is saying a lot. I loved the look of Gotham in winter. Bay's Leatherface was Chris Walken's son in the movie. And my personal favorite... Batman blew up a clown in the beginning of the movie. Very nice.

Sounds like a word Jar-Jar Binks would use. Anyway, The villians in Burton's films were pretty good. But he totally ignored Batman! Nolan, got it right. His movie entirely focuses on the Bats. But to those naysayers who are worried about the Joker, let me just say this. SCARECROW! Nolan, and Cillian Murphy, nailed the Scarecrow. I mean they nalied it! He's over the top at times, but at the right times. I'm sorry, but I think you guys can stop worrying about the Joker. Nolan and Ledger are going to pull it off. Trust me. Nolan actually cares about the Joker. Just read the USA Today article. One of the reasons he is doing IMAX is to give the Joker a big entrance. As he does deserve. And they gave Heath The Killing Joke as a reference for what they wanted for The Joker. Perfect. Just Perfect. All of us should be really hyped for this film. i know I am.

from the punisher TB's a while back...don't think you saw it...

Messi, Have You Even Seen Children Of Men, Or... by Buzz Maverik May 18th, 2007 06:03:58 PM ...Saving Private Ryan, or read the Punisher? And if you have, how much did you really comprehend? These are ridiculous connections. CHILDREN OF MEN was dystopian drama, it was todays headlines taken to the worst case scenario. SAVING PRIVATE RYAN was about the horrors of a war that has been nostalgized, progandized and glossed over for more than half a century. THE PUNISHER is a comic book full of revenge and power fantasies. It is for boys who wish they were men. There's nothing wrong with that. We all need that sometimes, but you're not talking about something truly dark and powerful, you're talking about a version of something dark and powerful for kids. THE PUNISHER was created in the 70s to capitalize on the success of such films as DEATH WISH and DIRTY HARRY. There's also elements of the DESTROYER and EXECUTIONER novel series in there. For comic books, it's very realistic and gritty. For movies...it's nothing special. That's why the movies bomb. Dig it, Stallone's COBRA sucked and a PUNISHER movie would be lucky to be as "realistic" as COBRA. I like violent movies. I think violence is necessary in some movies. Like Tarantino has said, I have no more problem with violence in movies than I do with dance numbers in movies (except for SPIDER-MAN 3). But at best, the PUNISHER isn't going to ever be more than an adolescent fantasy. That's okay. They make good movies, but not fine films. You want a realistic vigilante movie? TAXI DRIVER. The guy was nuts, a bigger menace than everybody he killed, a threat to society and no fun at all. Brilliant film. Put a skull on Travis' chest, let him outwit even one person and you'd have a straight to DVD Segal flick. Comic book gritty equals stupid on celluloid. People thought SIN CITY was a "dark, grim, gritty comic that brought realism...blah..blah...blah.." It was done the only way it could work. Currently, as written by Ennis, the book specializes in black humor. It works and black humor would work onscreen but if you make it three dimensional, it's automatically going to start being stylized and bigger than life. And no, panel for panel recreations aren't what I'd do. Hell, I was sick of the recreations by 300 and hope that any other Frank Miller movie is made without them. But I will say that there hasn't been a PUNISHER movie yet that matched either SIN CITY or 300, which you brought up. I think a better analogy for a PUNISHER movie would be...POCAHANTAS. Yep, the Disney cartoon. The filmmakers had to seriously consider why they were animating the story. There wasn't any magic or talking animals or much that lent itself to animation. Then, they did the waterfall dive sequence. Somehow, the dive became something that no real human could survive. Bigger than life. Like Marv's encounter with police cars in SIN CITY. Forget a CHILDREN OF MEN or SAVING PRIVATE RYAN. Won't happen. The thing to do is to avoid it being COBRA, or Steven Segal's MARKED FOR DEADLY TERRITORY or Van Damme's DOUBLE TWIN IMPACT. Or Dolph Lundgren's PUNISHER or even the last PUNISHER. This material needs a hook, needs visual power, needs a reason to exist or it's not going to be any good on its' own merits. It's neither realistic or fanciful by itself. Finally, since you keep bringing it up, I have to tell you, man, it's no big deal to me that I'm not echoing your opinion or a group consensus. When a guy's balls drop, he starts thinking for himself.

To be considered the best. Town Square feels like it's on the set of an AV Club- produced high school news set. Begins was the first movie to really open up the world, which was a definite bonus. I have to say that I really didn't like Returns when I first saw it. It's since grown on me, despite the serious mis-characterizations of all involved and the overdependence on Christopher Walken. Begins is such a different film from the Burton/Schumacher series that it's really hard to compare them but I'd put Begins at the top, followed by Batman (though there were character problems in this also and too much focus on Nicholson as Nicholson...errr...the Joker), Batman Returns a really, really close third, and of course Forever (ugh, Goldsman, lay off scripts, you hack) and B&R.

With Batman Returns, I enjoy watching the whole film. It may have a few flaws, but it's consistent and knows what it wants to be. Plus, I think Batman works better in the kind of stylised, hyper-real world Burton created.

With Begins, whenever I've had the chance to see it again, I always skip past the first hour or so. All those scenes explaining where things come from... gak. I just don't want to see it. Credit me with a little imagination - I don't need to see Bruce Wayne test-driving the Batmobile or hand-crafting his ninja star thingies. I can fill in the blanks for myself.

That said, I'm looking forward to The Dark Knight quite a bit. My hope is they can forget all the exposition for the sequel and just get on with telling a good story. Also, I like the way they're going with The Joker. I've been wanting to see the character I remember from the comics - that crazy, sick bastard who beat Robin to death with a crowbar. There was a certain amount of fun in watching Nicholson camp it up, but he was never The Joker to me. Nolan seems like the kind of guy who would do something much darker and more menacing.

I don't know the comics well enough to speak about the characterizations you mentioned...but in terms of the sets and the "world" of the film, I totally agree abotu Returns...

it felt like they were spending money left and right on every other thing, and the one thing that kept getting pared down more and more was the set for Town Square. and Burton wanted to be able to pan around and track wherever he wanted on the bridge, in the sewers, etc. but the tOWN SQUARE SCENES were pretty straight forward, so cut em up!

ended up looking fine for my eyes as a kid, but now as a film school graduate, I watch it and cringe...

Christian.... fucking... Bale for starters. Burton gets some credit for the first flick... the intro to that movie with the criminals up on the roof is fucking great. But whoever was above me that said it was Nightmare Before Batman was dead on... it was just way too much. I dunno, being a huge Batman nerd, I really digged the attempt at realism that Nolan went for with Begins. Least of all because it's a good counter to the WAY over stylized last three attempts. He's obviously really trying to make these as immersive for the audience as possible not just with the IMAX scenes, but how he treats the mythos of the character and the villians. Mix that in with an awesome supporting cast, a well paced origin story, I don't see how anybody could think Returns was better than Begins, bold attempt or not.

But we're all equal, with our erogenous zones blown sky high. There were some pretty stupid parts and batman was one-dimensional, but it's clearly the most fun of the series as well as being gruesome and overtly sexual. (+2) Plus Christopher Walken is present. (+1) I wanted to like Batman Begins but they spent too much time in the snow talking about boring shit and too little time in Gotham flying around the shadows. And how hard to please was that Rachel Dawes chick!? First he's not good enough because he's not fighting crime, then he's too batmanny for her tastes? You can't win with this chick! Cantrast that with Catwoman pretty much getting all S&M on that ass at the drop of a napalm. There's also a fundamental problem with "Begins" trying to explain every detail of something that's implausible to start with.

Anyway, each to their own, FilmZ0mbie. I am excited about TDK, though (not the tapes this time). I like the casting of Ledger, mostly because he's not the comic type. You know they didn't give him the role because they're expecting him to camp it up and do a bunch of loony mugging (ala Jack Nicholson and Jim Carrey). Hopefully, they've cast him because he's capable of being scary crazy rather than silly crazy.

he's putting everythoing into giving us the best Joker experience he can. This is going to rock and roll unlike any other super movie. As for Batman returns, i loved it when i saw it on the big screen at age 17, ive been a batman comic book nut since i was a baby so it was a real kick seeing batman fighting Catwoman up on the rooftops but nowadays i dont watch it so much , Begins trumps all, i never liked the hyper reality of the 90's movies, i always wanted them more real world like the Superman, not all movie sets. Oh yeah, emeraldboy, as to IMAX on the small screen the USA article the pictures link to tells you the IMAX image will lokk somethig like Hi-def tv on a regular theatre screen, itsa all good. I saw BEgins in the IMAX in Glasgow and thought it looked the wrong screen ratio and murky, exactly what the USAtoday article says can happen when a regular film is stratched for an IMAX screen. Probably. It's just too damn big for me, though. Gives me a headache.

Also, is Christopher Nolan just little bit over-rated? Memento is one of my favourite films, but it seems like he's never going to do anything that great again. Insomnia? Ordinary. Batman Begins? Decent if unspectacular. The Prestige? Not bad, until it went all wrong at the end. I don't mean to slate the guy - he's never made anything shit, which is an impressive acheivement - but is he as great as people reckon?

It's a flaw of the film, I think. They spend all that time taking the Batman world very, very seriously - and then the twirly mustached villain turns up with his high-tech doomsday device (and possibly to tie the hero's best girl to some train tracks). Ordinarily, I don't mind silliness, but I found the switch of tone a bit jarring in Begins.

The only problem I have with people harping on the realism that Nolan used for Begins is the fact that I never saw this movie as being realistic at all. You're dealing in a movie where he trained with a secret order of ninjas more or less... it's safe to say you can throw realism out the window from there on out. I really enjoyed the film for what it was... an origin movie that didn't come off as boring as most origin movies do.

Boondock Devil and 'Realism' in Batman Begins
by Sundaycall1
May 29th, 2007
06:34:58 AM
I get where you're coming from. There very little in concept about Batman Begins that relates to 'Realism' because realism by definition is the portrayal of things as they are in real life. Which simply isn't really the case with BB. However there's a difference between 'realism' and being 'realistic' i.e. an awareness of how things are in real life. I think what people admire about Nolan's Batman universe is that the film makers made a conscious effort make the fantasical elements of the Batman mythology more realistic and plausible rather than reaching for legitmate realism. It's a bit wordy but I'll try and explain what I mean, the Batmobile - a giant black tank with turbo boosters and missiles attached driving around the streets and rooftops of Gotham is about a far removed from what happens in real life as you'd get. However what earns the movie applause in the realistic sense is that Nolan and co. approached this part of Batman's world and said "Right, it's fantastical, but let's say this thing actually existed, where did it come from?" Everything from the vehicle's history, design and artilery were given careful thought and attention to detailto help create a sense that in this world there is a logic and sense that 'this might be possible'. Compare this with other incarnations of the car, with grappling hooks, neon light, bat wings and a button for everything and you can appreciate the steps that were taken to make the Batmobile more acceptable to the more cynical audiences of today. It's these valiant attempts to create a consistent set of rules and justification for these elements to follow in Batman's universe as well as the general straight-laced (non tongue-in-cheek) style of filming and storytelling Nolan adopts that people have championed. Batman Begins earned great plaudits for it's efforts to be 'more realistic' rather than 'grounded in realism' which it clearly isn't. That's why I love it.
Interesting conversation going on here...

...I think I'll throw my hat it with the folks who like 'Begins' better than 'Batman Returns.' They're both good films, and while there is some juicy characterization in 'Returns,' 'Begins' is a little more comprehensive. Also, as fanciful and art deco and German expressionist as Burton's Gotham City is, 'Begins' was the first time I ever really seemed as if Gotham was another character in and of itself, which helps to explain how and why the identity of Batman came into existence in the first place. Burton and Nolan are wildly different filmmakers, so it's almost hard to compare the two, but 'Begins' basically feels like the more complete story, as well as being an entertaining film on its own merits.

Batman Returns, in my mind, is as much a Batman movie as our attempty at Godzilla was really a Godzilla movie. Differences between the real Batman and Keaton's Batman: Keaton's Bruce Wayne really is a playboy; Bale's is just pretending. Keaton's Batman has no moral hangups about taking lots and lots and lots of human lives; Bale's refuses to kill even those guilty of murder. Keaton's Batman can't turn his head to the side; Bale's can. Keaton's Batman's Batmobile is sexy; Bale's Batman's Batmobile is pure testosterone. Moreover, Time Burton turned a glorified mob boss with a penchant for tuxedos into a sewage-eating freak. Likewise, he turned an athletic cat-burglar into a superhuman. Tim Burton's Batman was Batman in name only.

But, honestly, is the origin of the Batmobile what makes Batman an interesting character? I agree that a less outlandish car was good choice, but did the story benefit from the scene where Bruce Wayne visits the showroom and takes it for a spin?

For me, they were on a hiding to nothing when they tried to 'be more realistic' simply because Batman is an inherently unrealistic character. It is, ultimately, a man fighting crime dressed in a rubber bat costume.

The big flaw of Begins for me is that it is so horribly unimaginative - and that it denies any imagination in its audience. That attention to detail you mentioned may be great in the 'making of' book, but it didn't do anything for me in the story they were telling.

Ok, I understand your point, does taking the time to justify and explore the reasoning and origin behind the new look Batmobile actually further the story? Well I could agree that what is essentially a very kenetic exposition scene does not further the 'plot' of the film but I would have to say that in terms of fleshing out Batman's 'origin story' (which is essentially what BB is)i.e. showing in detail where the more famous tools and devices came from (the cave, batmobile, suit and grappling hook) I think effectively adds more layours to the character's roots and enriches Bruce Wayne's development from victim orphan to crime fighter. You could argue that going to such lengths robs the audience of their opportunity to imagine how it all happened (like Geoge Lucas letting everyone imagine how Darth Vader became Darth Vader) but in truth, we've had four movies that barely touched on the character's origin and quite frankly, for me, it made the Batman/Bruce Wayne character in the earlier films a bit "all style no substance", the character was a bit shallow, even vacant. He was just this image with no identifible motivation or even plausibility and that left me a little cold. It made the villains more interesting than Batman himself and like I said, it's this effort to flesh out and explore Bruce Wayne that puts BB over the others for me cuz it's really the kind of approach the franchise needed. It meant that when we finally get to the point where Batman has dirty cops hanging upside down 100ft above the pavement puttin the fear of god into them, it means so much more. We've seen how he got there, why he's doing what he's doin and just how this transformation came about and it gives the character weight, and power. Whereas in TB's original when Keaton holds the mugger over the ledge, yeah it's cool, but it's also a bit blank and meaningless. Batman Begins could never be called a shallow or vacant picture. That's it's strength.

To be honest, I don't see what the big deal is. Almost every superhero film, even the non-"realistic" ones, feature some sort of exposition where the character discovers their powers/ designs their costume/ invents doo-dads. Even 'Superman: The Movie,' which is a relatively campy superhero film by comparison, has a montage of Clark Kent testing the limits of his abilities. Bruce Wayne doesn't have superpowers, so finding the motivation and resources to become Batman seems like the logical equivalent. I don't think it wasn't even necessarily that Goyer and Nolan felt you needed to see where he got his ears from, or whatever, but the story they wanted to tell necessitated an origin story, and if you're going to do an origin story, then you have to go all out and decompress, which in turn necessitates a more realistic approach (which becomes an aesthetic). We can take some things for granted, like the utility belt that he has or that homing signal for bats on the bottom of his little booties, but I don't think taking a minute and a half or so out of the movie to explain where the gigantic tank came from is too much trouble.

This definitely seems to be taste thing. Some like all the explaining, some don't. I agree it's part of his origin, but they stretched it a little too far for me. It's not just the car, it's every other aspect of explaining Batman - the mask, the ears, finding the suit, painting the suit, handcrafting his throwy bat things, testing the cape, all that stuff. Too much, just like with the constant reiteration of the fear theme. Too heavy-handed for me. I think they said fear in Batman Begins more times than Tony Montana said fuck in Scarface.

Oh dear, I've done that thing where you start out saying you like something (Batman Returns) and you veer off into slating something else. I actually like Batman Begins - it's one of the better recent comic films - but I think it's very flawed and I didn't dig as much as some of the other talkbackers. Mind you, I am a constant defender of Fantastic Four, so maybe you might want to take what I say with a pinch of salt...

Nolan's tring way too hard to make all these caracters grounded in reality. A scarecrow in a business suit? Rais Al Ghul with a tiny little goatee? What's next, Mr. Freeze walking around in a refrigerator with holes cut out for his arms and legs? Nolan would fuck up Robin (who is already and easy enough character to fuck up). Also, is wasn't Dr. Gonzo who said that it was me goddamnit. I'm the goddamned Batman (nice Frank Miller reference).

Was a couple of entertaining but silly films for adolescents, and right it wasnt really Batman, it took way too many liberties. BB was for real. Tim Burton makes just about all his movies into the same juvenile gothic fantasy. He had to give even Willy Wonka his touch of childish creepiness. I guess his style will be apropiate for Sweeney Todd, and with those actors it just got to come out funny. I just wish Nolan could make his Gotham City a bit more Burtonesque. Not in that cartoony way, but he did all that filming in England and hardly used any older buildings or spires or gargoyles. I'm very happy with his gritty realistic style but he could tweak the otherwordly element a bit.
Now Schumacer got the comic aspect right.

I blame that bloody awful Planet Of The Apes remake. Also, he is beating a dead horse with the goth melarkey a bit. But, back in the 92, it was still cool, and I liked the way he added his goth carnival freakshow stylings to the Batman world. Also, people forget that he resurrected the comic book film genre. Would we have the likes of Fantastic Four (or substitute a comic book film that you actually liked here) without Burton's original film?

While I prefer BB, I can totally see why people really enjoyed the first two Batman movies. I enjoyed them, just not nearly as much as BB. I'm very anxious to see what Nolan does with the sequel and how he portrays the Joker. Many really liked Nicholson's Joker, but for me, he just wasn't menacing or evil enough. I'm hoping Nolan gets that part right.

...because it makes it easier to believe these are real people, and thus give a damn about them. I mean, I liked the original Batman a lot, bur it was hard to give two shits about whether he was gonna get iced or not. Keaton did a remarkable job with what he had, but Batman as portrayed in those movies really was kind of a shell of a character. And that can work, some heroes don't need any real depth of personality, but Batman's tough to stylize while maintaining identifyability because his whole schtick is kinda to become as inhuman as possible. I like the Burton movies a lot, but I do prefer BB.

He and Daredevil get together every weekend and trade rx scripts. As far as throwing my thoughts into the whole "best comic film ever" ring I have to say if you think Batman 89 is the best ever your a fucking tool or someone who really ,really likes musicals. That shit was so weak, I mean I loved it at first ( I was like 10 years old) but all that dancing around to a lame ass Prince soundtrack? Wow! I'm a die hard Superman fan,but I admit 1,3,and 4 blew hard. Maybe 1 not near as much as 3 and 4 but 1 has it flaws (Otis, and my favorite Can you read my mind?) as much as any other film. Ok, I take it back Superman and Superman 2 are great movies. I also think that with the cast and soundtrack that Batman Forever had the writer and director should have there balls removed. Given a removal of the neon, henchmen, and bad dialouge Batman Forever could have been a contender.

oh Batman...Franklin first of all gott aagree with you, Batman and Robin is the most hated thing in existence of History, forget Hitler, forget Judas iscariot (he got his own gospel) Batman and Robin is the the most wretched piece of history.

as for TDK, everything I see about it is making me more and more curious as to this movie. I didn't see Begins in the theatres because, well frankly I didn't trust WB,I wasn't sure what we'd end up with but I didn't trust them. When I finally saw it on DVD i was very impressed, maybe because I went in with such low expectations, maybe it was because I was disappointed initally with the fact that Darren Afronksy(sp?) wasn't doing it after all, but I came away impressed.

Interesting side note, I had rememreed reading Year One when I was a kid at a local library, so I sought it out and found it and reread it again, still holds up but was surprised to find it in our Children's Section at the Library, almost as if someone said "oh it's a comic it goes here" not reliezing what it contained, which makes me giggle.

Burton's version had many fine moments in my opinion, in some ways one of Burtons better films. I loved the casting. Specially the kids. and yes the squirrels was worth the ticket. But it was somehow in the end kind of boring. Not enough adventure. Too much creepy daddy, i love Saruman but why was he in that movie? In the end Gene Wilders version is a more satisfying yarn. Maybe Johnny Depp was just too disturbingly Michael Jackson. Of course nothing comes close to the brilliant book. Roald Dahl makes me nationalistically proud.

That's kind of an awful attitude for someone who uses this website enough to have a username. So you're saying every popular movie must be good, or at least, must be considered good by the weirdos and misfits (of which I proudly consider myself a member) who populate this site? Maybe the only emperor is the emperor of ice cream and the only "good" movie is the one that makes money, but if I accepted that philosophy I'd be at BoxOfficeMojo and not here.

Good point. I did kind of unfairly extrapolate your argument. I didn't really mean to; I started out asking a rhetorical question and then veered off on some weird tango-rant. I personally don't think a movie making a ton of money is a sign of quality either (recent examples of movies that most people probably don't even like but that did gangbusters are 'The Matrix Reloaded' and 'The Phantom Menace'), but I can see how there's a difference between 'Norbit' making $90 million or whatever and 'Dead Man's Chest' making over $400 million.

Someone asked him about the 'IMAX quality 70mm film he used' to film it and he said 'IMAX is it's own brand and uses a special 65mm film which is projected on special IMAX projectors' and, although similar in quality, isn't the same. Anyone able to confirm/deny that? Just curious.

who said he did not like the look of Gotham... that it was supposed to be a city of decay. Nolan wasn't trying to go for a city that looked like it was decaying... he was using people in the city to show it was decaying. The city is just like any other major city in the united states. Chicago's full of crime, but it doesn't look like fucking Gotham, does it?

Probably trying to simplify things for the general audience. Of course, it's also possible (given the second picture) he's going around wearing a clown mask AFTER the chemical bath, perhaps as a play on the old "take off your mask and you're wearing another mask underneath" kind of trick. He takes off his mask, and his real face is still fuckin' scary.

Batman kills more people than the Joker. The sets are ridiculous. The Joker is just Nicholson playing himself again. Keaton is NOT Bruce Wayne, ever. Batman wearing fake muscles? Penguin spitting up black goo? Catwoman gets amazing skills from falling in kitty litter? GIANT FUCKING PENGUINS WITH MISSILES STRAPPED TO THEM? Two-Face is Joker-redux, while Riddler is Mad Hatter plus Joker. And on and on... Burton's Batman films were HIS world, not Batman's, and they sucked major ass. Batman 89 sucked in 1989 when I saw the premiere, and it sucks WORSE today because it's so dated and trite. If you base your Batman lore on Burton's version, you're about two steps from basing it on the 60s TV Show.

I really like BB, for the most part. The realism, the grittyness and all. Some people copmplain of too much realism, not me. I just think that Nolan could have been a bit more imaginative with his backgrounds and atmospheres. He could make Gotham a touch more gothic, like in the comics, where its sometimes like a cross of New York and Prague. And he did copy a rundown asian city for part of the movie so it wasnt only the people being rundown. It seems to me just to make Gotham like Chicago is a bit pedestrian.

Batman killed in the early Batman comics. * Man, are you calling Anton Furst's brilliant art design ridiculous? That statement alone undermines your credibility. * Yes, Nicholson parodied himself as Joker, but that's why they hired him. Jack IS the Joker. And don't you think Liam Neeson just played himself again as Henri Ducard in Begins? * If Keaton is not Bruce Wayne/Batman, then why is he right up there in popularity with Bale? Why is Bale doing an acting impersonation of Keaton with the low-key style? Keaton had an enigmatic spark of insanity behind his sober portrayal, it was there in his eyes and his eyebrows. There was something behind it. With Bale, there is nothing. He's a good actor, but his Bruce Wayne was a blank and uninteresting, like almost everything in Batman Begins. Plus, the 1989 Batman suit was based on Keaton's facial features. Keaton disappeared behind that suit and became Batman. With Bale, he was acting behind the mask, I could even pick up his faint Welsh accent. * As for the fake muscles, yes, they should have cast either Arnold or Sly as Batman in the traditional spandex tights, what were they thinking? * Penguin, Catwoman (who was an athlete and took judo lessons cause she had no life), and the missile penguins fit in with Return's carnival gang atmosphere. Yes it did. * Batman has had a dozen or so different worlds since his inception in the 40's, and they are all relevant. Is the dark avenger of the early 40's no less relevant than the happy go lucky super-hero of the 50's and 60's or Miller's Dark Knight? Burton's vision is just as relevant, and the comics even took elements from the film. And Burton was the first comic book movie to to truly use comic book elements in a comic book movie/Tv adaption. His 1989 film had elements of the Englehart/Rogers, Bob Kane, and Miller stories, to name a few. And I don't see how you could compare Burton's vision with the 60's TV show, which was also a relevant version of Batman, and largely responsible for the character's mass popularity.

Huh. Well, then, like I said, I guess they're just simplifying for the audience. Trying to explain why a guy who gets a chemical dip suddenly starts acting like a clown. Though, I suppose that would add to the idea that the skin and whatnot is definitely makeup, as it seems pretty unlikely a guy who goes around dressed like a clown would just happen to get a chemical bath that made him look like a clown...

That was the one area where Raimi really fucked up with Spider-Man. Okay, Green Goblin had to die to set up the Harry's revenge storyline. But killing Doc Ock and Venom was just lame. You can't make the bad guys truly be Spidey's worst foes if they kick the bucket an hour after their introduction. If Nolan lets the villains live he can have them all team up to beat Batman in the third or fourth movie. Since the characterization is out of the way, he can cut right to the action and give us a superhero epic for the ages.

So far everything I've seen from this movie I've liked. I trust Nolan as he definitely respects the source material while putting a more real-world spin on it. There is no more appropriate hero than Batman to put that type of spin on. As odd as it sounds, seeing the green hair on the Joker made me like the idea of "the Chelsea Smile" alot more...I watched Pan's Labyrinth the other night and there's a scene where someone gets their cheek cut at the mouthline and it made me very excited (yes, BONER excited...well, there's no coming back from that.) to see Joker fully realized in this manner. Gabriel Gray...get cancer. Seriously dude, what are you 14?!? If you ARE, just wait 10 years and you'll realize how STUPID what you're doing is...until than..the cancer thing.
Spidey 2???
by SMARTASS8

02:03:49 PM
I don't understand why so many people always cite Spider-man 2 as the best superhero movie ever? I loved Spidey 1, but was really disappointed in the second 2 movies. Spider-man 2 had many problems imho: 1)Doc Ock's man-tits;he doesn't need spandex, but give him a shirt! 2)The scene with the girl next door and the piece of cake belonged on the DVD as a deleted scene;it offered nothing and felt out of place! 3)The cringe inducing elevated train scene;first we get a maskless Parker making faces like he's giving birth to a hippo, then we get the world's worst extras(Raimi must fill his movies with friends and family since all 3 Spidey movies had awful and distracting extras)prop Spidey over there heads in the worst Christ pose since Superman Returns. 4)Parker not doing anything for the guy who is being mugged in the alleyway(this is Quesada's Spidey, not Stan Lee's). 5)The awful Singing In the Rain number that ends with Parker winking at the camera. 6)Doc Ock killing off the doctors and nurses in such a grim fashion;it didn't fit with the rest of the movie(especially the girl scraping her fingernails off on the floor while screaming to her death) Raimi hasn't been able to mesh humor, horror, and drama together naturally since Evil Dead 2. While Spidey 2 wasn't the mess that Ghost Rider, Elektra, or Blade 3 was, it was far from perfect. People complain about Superman 1 + 2 not holding up. Both movies had consistant tones throughout their entire running time, and felt like comics being made back then. If people can still read old comics with enjoyment, then why can't they do the same for the movies. Superman 1 + 2 also are rare in that they kept almost everything from the comics, while still entertaining non-comic readers(Batman Begins did this pretty much as well). I'm just hoping The Dark Knight gives us Memento and Batman Begins Nolan, and not Insomnia and The Prestige Nolan. I'm starting to get nervous with what I've seen of the Joker so far.

I remember when Batman: The Animated Series was forced by Warner's to use a Burtonesque Penguin, then, a few years later they revised him back to a knock-off of the 60's version... and made him look like Bobby from King of the Hill wearing a tuxedo. It sucked! Look, Pengy's either a disgustin, hideous, but darkly humorous freak... or he's a short, fat guy with a monocle and an umbrella, take your pick... but which makes a scarier Batvillain?

"BEGINS" lifelike approach + "BATMAN" visuals = A+
by JDanielP
May 29th, 2007
02:53:02 PM
Someday, there will be a truly GREAT Batman flick. (It may even come in the form of the JUSTICE LEAGUE movie or a team-up picture with Superman.) Someday, not only will they knock it out of the park, they will hit a GRAND SLAM. And I think it will have *some* elements (however small) of Burton, Nolan, and even that other guy, with BATMAN FOREVER. What I'm saying is,...while I have an appreciation for Nolan's more lifelike approach, I would rather NOT have it at the sacrifice of stunning visuals and incredible ("MATRIX" grade) cinematography. I think David Fincher ("SE7EN"/"ZODIAC") would be a perfect blend for Nolan's approach, though you wouldn't expect to be floored by his choreography. But that particular blending of style and storytelling is something I could REALLY dig...because I absolutely LOVE Fincher's cinematic eye. Basically, no matter which way you lean in terms of storytelling, a Batman movie should look stunning. Batman movies SHOULD look incredible. An awesome Bat-suit costume design and exaggerated capes (various sizes for different shots/movements) represents the driven personality of Bruce Wayne. I just want the visuals to match great storytelling, within the fantasy world it takes place. I desire it to feel believable within that world...but not at the sacrifice of what comic books have given us in the form of sequential art. Slick or gritty, PG or PG-13, give me a masterpiece,...in terms of cinematic visuals, story and scipt,...and in acting performances. Don't let me go to my grave without a true Batman masterpiece.

...because of the Gotham city design. Sure, Keaton isn't as good as Bale, but whatever. Batman is nothing without a faithful rendition of Gotham City. You need that surreal, haunting cityscape. Huge ominous buildings with pipes everywhere. Burton nailed it and no one else has come close (except for the cartoon). I like Nolan's take on the character of Batman, but I despise what he did by relying so much on Chicago as a city. You're left with Batman in a boring city, not Batman in Gotham. So in my eyes, Batman Begins is not a true Batman flick at all.

Does that mean that the Imax scenes will be cropped down to a widescreen size for regular theaters and DVDs? That kind of pisses me off since the whole reason I buy the widescreen versions of movies on DVD is that I DONT WANT a cropped down version of a movie. This seems like a pretty stupid expense anyway since most people won't ever see it in an Imax theater.

There should be no cropping, since, as far as I know, Imax shoots in the traditional widescreen aspect ratio (2:35.1). The thing about Imax is that is allows you to capture a much higher resolution image, so when it gets put on dvd you won't be able to see nearly as much clarity in the image as you'll see in theatres. That's my understanding, at least.

Actually i agree more with Chuff, BB is the best film version. I believe you are a purist. Bale is better than Keaton, no argument there. Keaton was a good actor and had some interesting eyebrows and thats all.. "You need that surreal, haunting cityscape". That i also agree with, but Burton did it way too over the top, so cartoony it became silly. But yes Nolan could take a hint from the gothic elements and add at least some gargoyles and some historic atmospheric buildings. Burtons biggest sin was deviating so much from the norm and even making Batman kill. And in that regard i defend Nolan and say that yes his version is very much a true Batman flick.

As of now it's just 'The Dark Knight,' but there's no telling whether or not the studio will get cold feet and slap a "Batman" in there. 'Batman Begins 2: The Subtitling.' I like 'The Dark Knight' because it actually sounds like a legitimate movie title and not a brand name, which even the best comic book adaptations are saddled with, so here's hoping the studio stands their ground and keeps it as is.

For my money, Batman (89) is the best of the live-action Batman films (Mask of the Phantasm being the best Batman, period). Burton went too over the top in Returns, but he struck just the right balance of grit and sytlization in the first film. And don't give me that 'Nolan's Batman doesn't kill' bullshit. What do you think happened to the ninjas in the League of Shadows HQ? If you think all of them survived, then throw your beloved realism out the window (and what about the man Bruce refused to execute? most likely dead as a door nail). What's more, leaving Ra's in the train at the end, while not literally murder, was basically killing the guy. Nolan's fucked a lot up, too, and his lack of visual imagination and desire to explain every. single. THING. is keeping this franchise from achieving greatness (because we all know Bale is an amazing actor totally capable of giving us a kick-ass Batman...it's just too bad he's stuck in a mediocre flick). Here's hoping the sequel delivers. Less exposition and preachy dialogue, more style.

Talkbackgeek and Gabriel
by Quint
May 29th, 2007
03:59:19 PM
talkbackgeek - I believe Imax is 70mm (or bigger) as opposed 35mm film, which means the image is deeper and richer. If you've ever seen 16mm vs 35mm you'll know there's a big leap in quality. So, on the Imax screens these 4 action scenes will look as good as any of those "made for Imax" documentaries you've seen and the rest of the movie will be blown up from 35mm, so there'll be a slight quality difference. On 35mm (regular theaters) you'll notice a quality difference in these scenes as well. You know when filmmakers use 8mm in certain sequences... like Bay did at the end of Armageddon... you see the quality difference in how the film was shot, even if it is on 35mm. Super 8 would be blown up and distilled, fuzzy. 70mm shrunk down will be higher contrast, sharper. Hope that answered your question.

And about Gabreil Gray, I delete him when I see him, so I'm dependent on you guys letting me know when he pops back up again. He thinks it's funny, but at the end of the day he can appear as many times as he wants because with one click of the button on my end everything he's ever written disappears. He spends more time at something that won't be there the next day... or he's a bot.

This is something I've seen crop up sporadically in Batman-related threads, but I don't get the hostility towards explaining all the details (regardless of how minute) of Batman's origin. I personally think it's kind of a cool idea, but I concede that plenty of other people could choose not to care. However I don't see how the conceit keeps the franchise from "achieving greatness," as you say. At the most it's just something that you could have imagined explanations to yourself, but how it's an actual flaw of the movie is beyond me.

Interesting comment about the guy Bruce refused to kill ending up dead as a result of his actions, because I just re-watched 'Batman Begins' last week (in a comic book movie binge) and thought the same thing.

Well, why it keeps the film from achieving greatness is because it doesn't really leave anything to the imagination. It really is demystifying to me to see all of these things broken down into specific details. I suppose I could see why some people would find it interesting, but to me it just showed a lack of imagination in the filmmakers and that was projected on to the audience, who could really leave very little in the film up to their imagination.

was more visualy interesting than begins. But I like the fact that Begins has a real world look to it. It helps with the whole bringing Batman to life in a more realistic way.

Returns also was not really about Batman, can anyone think of a scene in it which actually explored who Batman was. It was just set in a world where it was not unusual for Batman to exsist.

Begins is actually about Batman and what it means to be Batman, why he does it, how he does it and what it says about not just his state of mind but also crime and punishment within society.

Batman is one of the only comic book characters who actually nade the choice to become what he is.

I don't care if Jack is pretty much playing himself it's still a funny and fucked up performance ('can somebody tell me what kind of a world we live in where a man dressed up as a BAT steals my press!'), and Burton's first Batman is a very STRANGE film indeed. Not that Returns isn't but at least it isn't depressing like the first film. It just seems to have no budget and the writing is as boring as fuck. Nicholson is the only good thing about it IMO, oh and Michael Gough as Alfred (I still can't believe that he was in them all up to Batman and Robin, although who better?).

I've been looking at these bulltins discussing why Spider-man 2 or Batman Begins didn't work for them as a movie. Most of these complaints are pretty petty and ridiculous. One guy complained that Batman Begins didn't work for him because it was trying to be too realistic with explaining how and why a man would dress around in a bat suit and fight crime. What kind of complaint is that?!?! The whole reason for going the realistic route in the first place with Batman Begins was because people(myself included)weren't satisfied with the campy and cartoonish route that began to emerged in the later original movies. Just face it, today's generation of movie viewers likes their shit to be explained and I for one aint just going to except a man fighting crime in a bat suit without a solid and convincing explaination. And as far as Spider-man 2 goes, I do feel that it is one of the best superhero movies to date. I saw people talking about that the movies didn't have no focus. Where you guys watching the same movie?!?! The main focus of all the Spider-man films was clearly peter trying to balance his responsibility as man and as a superhero. I also saw that people said that Spider-man 2 in particular drift from different genres and didn't know what type of movie it wanted to be. Well Spider-man has always had a different blend of genres from time to time in the comics but the main genre was always the superhero genre. So what was the problem of translating that to the movies with the mix of comedy and slight horror. It was still a superhero movie for goodness sake. Some say it had a slower pace compared to the first spider-man. Thats because spider-man 2 actullay had a story to tell and wasn't just trying to establish everything like the first one did without a main story. Now if the movie had too much action going on, then you guys would've conplained that it didn't have any story. My thing is yeah there's going to be a few nitpicks here and there and thats with any movie. But letting them little nitpicks take away from the overall movie is just ridiculous. Take the movie for what they are. Yeah these are fantasy movies but they got to have some logical sense to them, thats why the golden age of comics tanked in the lates 40s and 50s and people accpeted the silver age in the 60s. They were fantasy stories that had a sense of logic by mixing the science ficton element to it. So please don't take these movies to heart by saying that they're too realistic or too cartoony. There just movies.

but it just doesn't have the complexity of the original.

It is set over a few years instead of just jumping straight in to the couple of weeks at the end of their undercover carreer.

It just doesn't let the characters develop as every 5 mins it jumps forwards a couple of months. I like the fact that in IA 1 it doesn't have any exposition, it just shows what happens and you have to watch it a few times to absorb all the detail.

The Departed feels like they tried to combine IA 1 and 2 but didn't really get the brilliance of either film.

As a film in its own right it is still great though.

Those shows are really good, and if they existed in another medium I would watch them. It's the medium of television that is so absolutely evil and disgustingly wart-covered. And really, while some shows can be really good, they can NEVER transcend the medium of television and give you a TRULY memorable experience. Tell me has any show EVER done that? For me- I know some movies and books have done that, and many PEOPLE have done that, but NEVER television- in fact it sucks those experiences away from you and leaves your skull hollow.

Simpsons, office, etc are probably better and more timeless than any comedy movie out there.

As far as drama I kind of agree, LOST is brilliant but sometimes it acts like a TV show with some parts (ie some of the more unimportant flashbacks) seeming like mass produced filler. Sometimes it even feels like a soap. In that way it will never have the same consistancy as a movie but that is due to them having to have weekly episodes.

I often think about how much better it would be if it where a few episodes shorter per season, not much but just enough so that every episode and scene is at its peak.

Why do people bother talking to or about GiGi
by Napoleon Park
May 29th, 2007
07:00:13 PM
when every day all his posts get deleted? All these talks are full of people talking to, at or about the poor kid. No one seems to pity him. His posts are an obvious cry for help. "f*ck f*ck f*ckitty f*ck, f*ck this, f*ck that, f*ck it all, f*ck everything but the kids." He hits on that theme again and again. Don't f*ck the kids.

Gabriel on Criminal Minds never smiles or laughs and is obsessed with understanding twisted psyches. Peter Gabriel in Genesis was a schizoid lead singer taking on the persona of every character he sang. And the Biblical Gabriel is an angel of vengence. Jean Grey became the crazed Dark Phoenix. Meredith Grey is a self loathing manic depressive unable to stay happy. All the Gabriels are male, all the Greys female. And his favorite show and talkback is "Lost", the series in which every character has disturbing father issues.

Put the clues together. As a child - which he still is mentally - his father repeatedly f*cked him and when he told his mother, instead of helping him SHE LAUGHED AND LAUGHED, something the real GiGi is now incapable of ever doing.

Oh why must you torment him with your taunts, his time is running out. People like him always suicide out, they always leave long impassioned suicide notes and, here's the funny part, the person the note is addressed to or the person who finds it always destroys it unread.

He will be gone and forgotten soon, why not start now. Just ignore him. We are the only family he has left, when he realizes we are done with him it will be all over once his blood runs out. RIP GiGi.

I think at least 1 parent should stay at home if possible.

IMAX explained.
by Bronx Cheer
May 29th, 2007
09:07:46 PM
IMAX uses 70mm film. The film is pulled sideways through the gate 15 perforations per frame. It works very much like a Vistavision camera which uses 35mm film with an 8 perf horizontal pulldown. (Effectively, the camera is turned on its side, and a larger aperture is employed, but your using spherical lenses, not anamorphic.) A single frame of an IMAX film is ten times the size of a single frame of standard 35mm film pulled down vertically at 4 perfs. Obviously, such a large negative allows for a beautiful print for the massive screens IMAX uses, but when reduced to 35mm projection, the result is an image of remarkable clarity. It's a matter of resolution.

Vistavision cameras are still used today for effects work because of the superior resolution. A larger negative helps reduce generational loss which occurs during the multiple passes an original neg might go through in order to get to a finished effect. But since most film goes through a Digital Intermediate (DI) these days, generational loss is not such a big deal.

It's worth noting that Nolan does not use a DI on his films. He does not like the look. He prefers to finish his films the old-fashioned way. Therefore, IMAX would be a good format for him if he wants a dazzling negative prior to putting his film through the post-production process.

I hope this has been of some help.

I'm talking about the Batman fight sequences where there are quick cuts and you can't clearly see what's going on. This is a GOOD thing because it's a FACT that seeing fights with the movie Batsuit always looks so fucking lame. Also, the cuts make Batman seem more like a presence that swoops in and takes people out. Nolan got it right in that you should never see him just walking around in the suit, he should always be in some sort of action pose or offscreen. I tell you the moment I absolutely LOVED, in the warehouse scene when the guys know that Batman's there but they can't see him, you get a sense of real danger, you have to thank Nolan for that.

The James Van Der Beek character is actually the brother of Christian Bale's character from American Psycho. The films are actually based on a book trilogy by a really kick ass author, I'll let you wikipedia it out, but if you love reading books, I highly reccomend them.

The fights were staged poorly. The third act, as mentioned elsewhere, was sort of silly. That microwave thingee would have vaporized the water in the cells in the human body; everyone around it would have died. And that massive destruction involving the train was way over the top. I didn't buy the physics of it; the train was going far too fast. Batman himself was well-conceived. Gordon had too many gee whiz moments; almost made him seem like an imbecile. The stuff with Morgan Freeman was a little too pat. I almost expected Bruce Wayne to be pushing a shopping cart like he was at Home Depot. Other than that, a good film. I think Nolan and Bale have figured out the character, and now it's time to turn him loose. I expect this next film to be far superior. In fact, and I am basing this on a gut feeling, I think The Dark Knight may eventually be referred to as the Greatest Comic Book Fillum Evar. (See, the whole "best ever" thing is silly. It's far too subjective. How about we expect these films to be good? Period. Giving them their own sub-classification almost allows them to suck a little and get away with it. I thought what made Batman Begins such a worthy film was that it reached out of the comic book ghetto. It wanted to be taken seriously as a film, not just as a comic book flick.)

But for the record, the three best comic book movies are: American Splendor, Superman: The Movie, and Ghost World, in that order.

You all must learn to show Harvey Pekar some effin respect.

scenes, and the way the warehouse sequence was staged thrilled me because it reinforced what Batman was about: TERROR. He is to crime what criome is to polite society. But there comes a time when fight scenes need to be handled the way dance sequences SHOULD be shot. You should be able to see it all, head to two, at least for some of the scene. The viewer still concentrates on what he or she chooses, but by showing the performer in full, it sells the action. When you see Jackie Chan doing what he does best, you generally see his entire body. The suit is problematic, but I expect the new suit that's coming in the next film will solve some of the mobility issues and allow for better staging.

While I am excited to see how they realize the Joker, I am really pumped to see what they have in mind with the suit redesign.

the problems with BB where due to Nolan being slightly over his head. It was his 1st big movie. Imagine how nuch more confidence he will have this time to concentrate on improving the look and fighting. He has done it all before with the first one, had The Prestige to hone his skills and now knows his actors much better.

Also any dodgy dialouge or plotting came from Goyer so brother Nolan should sort that out.

I love the fact that while most people think the action in BB is lacking they still love the film. Shows that the action scenes are not as important as character.

Ghost World and American Splendor are both fantastic films but I think when people say 'comic book' movie they really are reffering to movies dealing with Superheros etc. It's not like you would put Superman and Ghost World in the same catagory if they didn't come from the same medium.

touch on the key difference. While both comic books and the Saturday morning serials have the serial narrative in common, comic books and graphic novels are a different medium and translating them to the screen can be a formidable challenge. The serials that Lucas and Spielberg fashioned Raiders after are films, and so Raiders is an homage. We can split hairs all we want, however, making distinctions between superhero comics and ones that are reality-based (or mundane), but quite honestly I'm too old for that. Nolan grew just from the Batman experience. (I think The Prestige was a terrific movie.) Since we never know exactly who's responsible for how characters ultimately develop, I agree it's important to make note of Goyer and I also agree Nolan is ultimately then one on the hook. A good example is the famous bazaar scene where Indy shoots the swordsman. If Ford hadn't been ill and suggested the gun out of exasperation and exhaustion, we would have gone without one of Indy's defining moments. Pulling the gun was practical and because of that completely unexpected, and audiences loved it. It was also quintessentially American, which Indy certainly is.

Some good points, sir. I fore one thought the fight scenes were disorienting in theaters, but watching it on DVD wasn't as bad. I think the Nolan brothers will write a better script than Goyer did, altough that was probably Goyer's best work to date. Johnathan has already said that this film, Batman is going to be much more of a detective. That's a good thing. Plus, when the Nolan brothers write scripts they remove all the fat. Nothing uneccessary to the plot. Also, Memento was a short story by Johnathan Nolan, in case you're wondering if he's a good writer or not. I've gotta alot of faith in this one folks. I think we all should.

Something about BB in the way it was made and way it takes itself serious. I recommend it as a great film to anyone. I don't need to find out if people are comics fans or not. BB is a great film regardless if they know anything about Batman or comics. This specific "comic adaptation" really transcends. It is hard to explain I guess, but that personal opinion is why I have complete trust in Nolan and faith his next Batman venture is going to be just as great. I don't have that doubt you can sometimes get with directors when they make stuff. It seems more professional, if that makes any damned sense.

that directing is such a hard overwelming intense complex job that every time a director makes a film he must learn so much. Nolan will be coming to this film with so much confidence. He was probably terrified on the first one.

also he will be given much more freedom now WB know that Batman is a viable franchise again.

Silverglade - I know what you mean, I made my mum watch BB and she hates comic films or any sillyness in a movie and she said it was brilliant. It really does transend the genre.

I think it was easy to respect the source material with American Splendor and Ghost World as the original comic creators had a major hand in the film production (i.e. Daniel Clowes wrote the screenplay with Zwigoff) and both comics were based on everyday life, so it's easy. It's much more tricky I think to stay true to source material with super-hero comics because sometimes the original material just won't work on the big screen, or there's not enough substance there to begin with and they have to come up with new stuff to give it more resonance or something. And I don't think it's possible to make a faithful decent film adaptation of Dark Knight Returns (I assume that's what TDKR is)

Pixar "Bug's Life" was even one. And there was more than just a few nods taken from "Samurai" for Star Wars. Katsushiro, the young would-be samurai, was an inspiration for Luke Skywalker himself. The village with all the ronin walking about mirrors Mos Eisley. The samurai's ineptness against the bandit's gun(new mechanized technology) mirrors the rebellion's ineptness against the Death Star. And yes, Can'tBe Named, Star Wars owes its existence to "Hidden Fortress." But back to Batman...

My Neighbor Totoro is, indeed, Miyazaki's finest. My daughter has watched that film a good 30-40 times within the last seven months. She loves it. And I just can't get sick of it. I even bought her the Children's Picture Book via Viz Media and the Art Book for myself. She loves that book as much as the film. I am still having difficulty finding the right Totoro and Neko Bus plush toys for the right price. Lots of merch out there and I must confess I haven't spent enough time on looking. Wish I could take her to the museum to play on the bus. She'd probably go nuts.

After that, I gotta say Nausicaa/Mononoke/Spirited tie three way style for me. My daughter loves my wife's Kodama sock hat i.e. it is now hers. Film's a little too severe for a three year old though.

Track down the Dark Horse "Thing" comics to find out what happens immediately after the film ends. You sound like a severe Thing fan like me, so I think it will be worth your time and money. John Higgins does the art for the first arc. Beautiful.

Yes, Kurosawa himself borrowed from Western Culture for his films, and you could say Lucas borrowed from a lot of stuff, but, I've said before, that in my estimate, Lucas owes about 65% of Star Wars:New Hope to "Hidden Fortress" and Kurosawa, a fact that hardly gets mention in official histories. Basically, take "Hidden Fortress", add in a Katsushiro (young apprentice character for the male audience), transcribe it to a galaxy, far, far away and you have "Star Wars." Besides the similarities you pointed out earlier, There's the two comedic peasants being captured to be used as slaves just like 3PO and R2, There's the epic sword duel between General Rokurota Makabe (Obi-Wan) and his old friend/nemesis General Tadokoro, just like you know what. There's Makabe's constant use of mind tricks over lesser characters, just like the Jedi mind trick, There's the use of the gun that signifies the encroachment and impending doom of mechanized technology over the old ways just like the Death Star, There's the award ceremony at the end of the film just like New Hope's. There's the idea that even the smallest weakest worst characters can make a difference for good, the two bumbling greedy peasants or General Tadokoro compared to 3PO/R2 or Han/Chewie, or even Darth Vader. General Tadokoro (our resident Darth Vader) redeems himself at the end and becomes Rokurota's friend again, saving both him and the Princess. Although that's from ROTJ, I'm mostly referring to New Hope, which would have been the only film had New Hope not done well, with Darth Vader's redemption left untold. So there you go.

my child Miyazaki's films. They are so much more intelligent and full of wonder than Disney crap these days.

I love the idea of getting the art book etc for the child too.

Does she watch it subtitled? It's just that I don't find the youngest girl to be half as cute (and she is the cutest onscreen child in the history of cinema)when dubbed and it would be a great way to get a child reading.

Fuck the haters. I thought The Host was awesome - plot holes and all. I already have the collector's edition pre-ordered. The Korean DVD Special Edition is sick. Here I am blabbering. Did you even like it? Kang-ho Song, or however you write it, is one of my new favorite actors. I'll watch him in anything. Loved his performance, obviously, in The Host. I was actually lucky enough to see in on the big screen. I think it was only released to like 75 screens or something.

Wasn't Frank Miller interested in writing Robocop 2 or something?

Almost all their films referenced other films heavily. DePalma took from Hitchcock. Spielberg took from sci-fi. Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" is an amalgamation of films by Robert Bresson, particularly "Pickpocket" except for that really bloody ending... and Lucas took from Kurosawa. Believe it.

The haters on imdb are merciless towards The Host. But what do expect? Miller did write Robocop 2. Hollywood raped the hell out of it. A faithful script adaptation via sequential art just wrapped. Avatar. Nine issues of Miller/Grant/Ryp tightness. I enjoyed the hell out of it. His story finally realized in comic form is better than never at all. The collection is out there if you are interested.

I just finished watching Pan's Labrynth(?) and if you haven't seen the movie yet SPOILER SPOILER SPOILER towards the end of the movie when Mercedes sticks the knife in the Captain's mouth and cuts him, the scar that remains is this perfect curled up half smile. I couldn't help but think that that is how the Joker should look. The smile (even though it was only half of his mouth) was perfect and very creepy looking the way it curled up at the end. I can see the Joker taking a knife and slitting his mouth the same way and he would have a perfect permanent smile. Anyone who has seen this movie think the same?

It's not that I feel that "BATMAN BEGINS" had absolutely no style. It's not that I feel that it had no beautiful shots, because there were a few. As you mentioned, there were some nice shots in the mountains, including the flags. And personally, my favorite shot was when Batman dropped down within the stairwell, with his cape out wide (as there had to be some exaggeration there, with the use of a larger cape, specifically for that shot). That was an absolutely beautiful shot. I LOVED that shot. You've got to have those Batman money-shots, you know? I feel that Nolan's lifelike approach leans a little too close to reality in visual terms, with not enough visual entertainment, from that artistic perspective. I love David Fincher's cinematic eye because even within the bounds of a story based on real life (or reality), within a real city, he STILL manages to make his movies beautiful to look at,...even if what is being presented is quite disturbing. His movies, however you feel about the stories he tells, are visually exciting. I just LOVE, LOVE, LOVE the guy's eye for the camera...and what he shows within it. He has an artist's eye, as does Peter Jackson,...yet Jackson is on another end of the spectrum. Basically,...Batman movies should LOOK the coolest of cool,...in a nerd trying to be cool speak.

I just didn't have any problems with Batman Begins. I really thought it was high grade entertainment. My only problem was Katie Holmes. Just a little too irksome for me. I can't really say why, I just don't like her. Glad she's moved on.

Regardless, despite the fact that I understand and see all the points/observations/critiques, I just can't fully subscribe to them regarding this film. I don't disagree with them all, I just don't share the same feelings so to speak. Point of fact, I thought the fight sequences were great. I have no issues with the so called shaky cam (Bourne, Gladiator, Man on Fire, Domino et. al.). But that's just me i.e. a simple man. I guess the whole point of this diatribe is that I love this site due mostly to the fact that there are so many viewpoints out there which are shared. You ladies and gentlemen bring many things to light that I would normally overlook which ultimately garners a greater appreciation of film for me.

I really hope the Nolan brothers knock this one out of the park. I really do. This looks to be something kick ass on all levels. As does Iron Man. Thanks for reading.

And the Bourne Ultimatum, if it's like the first two, will be great. For me, Damon is so great in that role, even though others on this site didn't buy him as an assassin.

is that the film should be from Batmans perspective not the thugs. It' s not bad - definitely a more badass, violent type of Batman, which is what you'd expect from Frank Miller. I'm not a huge fan of that super-exaggerated macho thing he does, but Miller fans would probably have liked his take on the film. It's not for kids, though, and I'm not surprised they never made it. Who do you sell a film like that to? (apart from AICN types who always want everything to be R rated)

Very much appreciated. More badass & violent sounds very good to me. I also find Miller a bit flat and repetitive, but he is good at telling a dark yarn and be striking. I bet Aaronofsky would have infused the thing with a lot of depth. Considering how for instance 300 did very well being bloody, i think it goes to show that a lot of comic fans have grown up and want a serious and all-out take on their comic heroes. People are bored with everything being kid-friendly these days. I mean apart from all the kids that loved Spidey...Started reading the script, it sounds like a radically altered Elseworld with a lot of liberties taken..

Is what that script made me think. First i was a bit amused, and annoyed at the glaring changes made in the basic premise of the Bat universe. But in the end i was impressed and awed. I think Miller crafted a primal Batman here, and Aaronofsky would have made it into an immortal classic noir film. Studios are wimps and are lucky to ever make a hit.
