to be better than the film. I remember loving the marketing for HOSTEL 1, with all the proud prancing from QT, and all that. I hoped that the film might live up to the shock inducing propaganda. I saw WOLF CREEK a week before I saw HOSTEL, and that one shocked the hell out of me. If you haven't seen it, do yourself a favor and rent it. Everything that flopped in Eli's flick worked in WOLF CREEK...

But HOSTEL? What a disappointment. The special make-up effects sucked, the directing sucked, the story sucked ("Oh, look! There are all the bad people, conveniently lined up so I can run them over with my car!")... and worst of all, it was about as shocking as a FRIDAY THE 13TH flick.

I'm still wondering how Eli could fuck up such a great premise with all the money he spent. Can I hope this one will live up to the hype, finally? I love the marketing, again. So far so good.... Could the man actually deliver something good?

Might have to wait for the unrated DVD to find out, though. I don't know if I want to see it with the audience the flick will pull in. Talk about scary shit....

The headless girls in the poster you're talking about is Bijou Phillips, who has tits with more talent than her head has for acting... and that is her OWN head she's holding, which is one reason I love that poster. Fucking hilarious... but censored (censored right here in the land of the free - Fuck the MPAA).

Anyway, that poster may be Eli's first bit of inspired directing, if you ask me, and that's why I'm still gonna give the guy a chance to give me nightmares. Hell, Scorsese and Coppola did a Corman movie, and look where they ended up, right?

Had funny characters and a cleveer little plot. But Hostel was veeeerry dissapointing. It almost wasn't even a film ..more like a collection of scenes chucked together. The boring obnoxious characters, simplistic plotting and ludicrous ending (everyone the hero needed to get revenge on , was lined up one after the other in front of him!}rather spoiled it.The torture rooms should have been a revelation for the ending , in a kind of seconds /whicker man finale .. or at least an unexpected Audition payoff.Instead they built the whole add campaign around the torture.and it couldn't live upto it.

I'm sure he has turned figurative shit into figurative gold, or maybe figurative shit into literal gold (if he doesn't trust banks), but until he turns literal shit into literal gold, or figurative shit into literal gold, I'm will continue to be unimpressed.

I don't think he's the worst guy ever, he clearly loves horror films, and has just found a new niche, but I just find the hostel films SO boring, it's frustrating. I look at them as someone would look at a novel written entirely in text message lexicon. "ur 2 hot 4 skool" etc. etc. this sort of retardation of the medium of film, and even, of horror films.

when you say "treated", I assume you mean by the talkbackers, not Harry/Quint/Mori, etc.

that being the case, your implication is that certain filmmakers should get special consideration because they're a little geekier than the norm.

I give Roth credit that he was on Bravo's scariest movie moments, or whatever shit. and what does that buy him from me, the typical talkbacker? a comment to the extent of, "he seems like a cool guy, buuuuuut...." (which I said above, more or less)

at some point, you have to be a good filmmaker, not just a geek with a microphone. art is not supposed to be cathartic, it's supposed to be good. I don't fawn over filmmakers whose works I love, but who I hate as peaople. but I still watch the films and enjoy them.

Roth, in my opinion, has found a niche, and is face-fucking it as hard as possible, for as long as possible. maybe when Cell comes out, he will prove me wrong. I hope so, because I dug the book.

but either way, the filmmaker can suck as many TBers dicks as he wants, he still has to produce.

and by the by? if you think Bryan Singer, the director of Superman Returns, gets a free pass from the talkbackers...or even more, as you wrote, is "treated like a king"....you sir, are confused beyond belief. AICN talkbackers HATE superman returns...

You must appreciate that at least some of the unbridled hatred for these guys comes from a 'I could make a film like that' mentality a lot of talkbackers have. When truth be known , these guys while not Kubrick or Fellini , have managed a level of filmmaking skill to get their stuff out there. Look AICN is known for its...every movie sucks....style talkback but it just seems these guys get it worse than most and its the only reason I can think of...I don't think they are nearly as bad filmmakers as the majority here at AICN seem to think. But BadMrWonka , you made your point clearly and concisely....a refreshing change from the Lost.Rules type of talkbackers and I respect that.

fair enough.

I certainly can't argue that, in general, there aren't a huge host of TB posts born from the "I could do that" mentality, as you said. you're absolutely right, it's true, and it's unfortunate.

that having been said, no one says that about a lot of other filmmakers, who recieve an equal amount of shit for their choices (look at the new Batman TB for an example). they bitch and moan about every little thing, but no one has quite that same mentality of "this guy is a hack, I could do that shit", that happens with Roth.

now, I went to film school, I've shot a lot of short films, I'm in festivals, blah blah blah. point is, I'm not a 14 year old in my mom's basement. BUT, do I think I could shoot a horror film tomorrow better than Roth? no way. I don't LIKE horror films. I unnderstand that you have to love a style before you can devour it and make it your own. true of Spielberg with family adventure films, true of Moore with Docs, true of carpenter with B movie funfests, true of Bertolucci with envelope-pushing dramas...

but my complaint is not with Roth's LOVE for horror, it's for his lack of respect for fans. he has cleary seen what fans will pay for and see, and he is going to make those types of films (I think I referred to it a little less gracefully as "face fucking") until the well is dry.

if you love John Carpenter's "The Thing", (as he does, and hs gushingly SAID he does) then MAKE ANOTHER ONE! I would love it! but I think he's taken all of these separate componenents, thrown them in a bag full of youtube and myspace, and figured out a good business model for horror in the 21 century.

and part of me thinks, "god bless him" suck that teet dry, Roth. there are worse out there.

but part of me thinks, "come on...you are BETTER than this!!!"

and part of me thinks, "come on, I could do this shit!!!" ;o)

Listen, I rarely post on here but I have to ask: Does no one else see that Eli Roth is trying to take horror in new directions? Look at Cabin Fever: he made a slasher flick without a fucking slasher (unless you count the disease, but still). In Hostel the "slasher" was the nature of man. For all the fucking bullshit movies Hollywood puts out that involve the same disaffected group of troubled youth getting stalked by a madman or other such entity, Eli's entries in the genre should be more than welcome.

I've seen it, and it was good. I wouldn't rank it as good as number one but Eli Roth has now made three movies, one trailer, and one series that I love, the guy is so great. The gore was good when they had it, though it was by no means a gorefest. I only have two complaints, one it was kind of short and two, they didn't show one death happen that they really should have. You know what I'm talking about if you watched it. So yeah I felt a little unsatisfied with the payoffs at the end and the length but overall it was great. It had none of the stupidity seen in Roth's previous movies so I was surprised. The gore is pretty much all offscreen again and there isn't much nudity which is surprising with Bijou Phillips in the cast. I was surprised to see Heather Matarazzo hanging naked upsidown from a hook I can't imagine her 10 years ago after "Welcome to the Dollhouse" got such big reviews thinking "someday I'll be a piece of meat in a torture porn movie!"

It made me squirm in my seat, I wanted to see nasty stuff, I got it. This sequel is terrible. The only bit of creative violence is the upside down girl. The rest is nonsence, oh you decapitated someone as a finale Eli... genius. The supposed heavy hitting grim scene wasn't all that difficult to watch either, not a patch on blowtorch girl, Saw 3's skull operation or Auditions needles. The lead-in to the violence was way too boring as well, at least last time there were lots of boobies. The look at the workings of the organisation was interesting, but Eli clearly isn't talented enough to make a great idea into a reality. Some of the dialogue between the two American dudes was terrible... Overall, well and truly dissapointed.

You thought that was a good special make-up effect? I thought it looked totally fake. I thought all of Hostel's gags looked fake, although I admit, the set design and lighting was great. This is another reason it's a shame Eli couldn't make a better film out of a such a great premise. But I kept thinking "Where's Tom Savini when you need him?"

Anyone see WOLF CREEK, for crying out loud? That's a shocker because it concentrates on being realistic. The DVD contains a deleted scene which is all gore (the scene in the well). They took it out because it detracted from the realism in the film. The realism as portrayed by the excellent actresses is what made that film so hard to sit through. When it comes to shock, it's not about the gore, it's about the acting. Hear that, Eli? A.C.T.I.N.G. It's what a good director gets out of their meat puppets. Not that he cares, mind you, he's rich, now, and he's about to get richer off of bad audiences, if you ask me.

I would be pleasantly surprised if this sequel flopped. Now that would be shocking!

A Review of the flick

Oh Dear... Don't wanna put up any spoilers seeing as the film ain't hit the theatres yet but this is a seriously badly thought out sequel. First off, I'm a Roth fan. I loved Cabin Fever's insane, don't give a fuck kind of tone and Hostel 1 was one of my highlights in cinema last year. So I was really looking foward to this one. In my humble opinion, everything that was wrong in the first one is repeated in this one and everything Hostel 1 got right Part II stomps all over and ruins it, showing that the creators didn't have a clue what message they were getting across to fans & really were just making a gorefest. The thing that really confuses me about it is it takes the best part of an hour to get us back to the torturehouse. WE KNOW WHERE THEY'RE GOING. Hostel was a sweetly timed slow burning horror, building up the dread. We knew they would end up on that bloody chair but we never knew how. This time we did and need to sit through an hour of the same stuff. 3 Things that Hostel 2 prove: 1) Eli Roth is a closet homosexual who loves male nudity as much as female. 2)He really can't work well with actors, the acting was good in the 1st it was lines like "Oh yeah I didn't tell you, I seen a girl drown" stuff that let them down, but it wasn't too bad, in this Lauren German is the only one actor that walks away with any credibility. 3) If you're going to say "I have the sickest twist ending ever" actually give us one. Don't get me wrong it's sick but as for a twist, it just downright blows, it's rushed and not well thought out - the characters aren't developed enough to go through such a "Change". The sick part has also been done before by one Wes Craven. All-in-all it's a shitty film and I think Roth/QT/Harry Knowles and everyone who backed the rough, but showing promise, first know it. Will they have the balls to admit it, I doubt it. Cell better be a lot better or Roth is fucked (in terms of making genuine films) I'm sure his pillow made of $ helps him sleep at night. I had him with 2 good flicks, now I have him with one good film because Part II is so shit, it actually fucks up the premise of part I and ruins everything the fans had in their heads about the organisation etc. Poor Show.

Wow Harry, you are such a little bitch ass, cum dumpster. 7 freakin articles on Eli Roth and his lame wannabee attempts at horror ovies gets 7 articles on this site. But Danny Boyles 28 weeks later film gets like one or two? (ps I know Boyle didnt direct Weeks but u know what i mean) Don Murphy was right about you all along. You really are a worthless turd. I cant believe I actually wasted time going over there to defend you and this site, not too long ago. What a waste of my fucking time. Defending a loser fucktard with huge titties, who does absolutely nothing at all except shit on his ass eating breakfast nachos @ 1pm. I cant imagine the horrible trainwreck of a life you would be living if this site hadnt taken off in popularity. Can you imagine what life for you would have been like if you needed to rely on an actual skill or creativity? Maybe you could have turned into a video store clerk or maybe a movie theater employee working for minimum wage? Thats about it though. I hope you say a little prayer at night for your tiny bit of good fortune in an otherwise pitiful life. I guess the only way you get to sleep at night is thinking about your 7000 myspace friends after furiously masturbating to some obscure german horror movie thats only available on Betamax while looking at your naked picture of Eli that Im sure is in a folder on your desktop. Don Murphy was right about you Harry. And you know what? Ban me if that makes you feel any better.
