HeadGeek is right. It is all about the audience indeed. This was never more present than the 20th Anniversary Special Edition re-release. I'm sitting there at Grauman's Chinese talking with some other dudes about how old we were when we first saw Star Wars and the whole 9 when all of a sudden this mom comes in with about 3 or 4 little dudes and they were having a light saber fight and arguing about who was Luke Skywalker and who was Darth Vader. Us dudes just looked at each other and smiled with joy as we watched those kids. Full circle.

Well - Star Wars wasn't the thing that made me a geek. I was raised in a comic and movie collectibles shop by my parents who were film school grads. By the time STAR WARS came along - at the ripe age of 5 - I was already a fan of: Universal Monsters, Bruce Lee, Gorgo, Marvel Super Heroes, Logan's Run, James Cagney, Max Fleischer SUPERMAN cartoons, Betty Boop, Commander Cody, Buster Crabbe's Flash Gordon and Buck Rogers serials, GI Joes, Mego Dolls, Star Trek, King Kong and much more. My geekdom isn't defined by, started by or founded by - STAR WARS. But I do love it.

Just give me the damn ULTIMATE SAGA EDITIONS SET!!
by performingmonkey
May 25th, 2007
06:56:16 PM
Why can't Lucas give us this - a) Remastered versions of the original (yes, original) prints of ANH, ESB and ROTJ, b) ULTIMATE saga editions of all 6 flicks with more CG shots in the OT, added elements to help the saga flow easier (I'm talking about making Vader and Obi duel look less like stumbling, add proper fighting in the wide shots courtesy of CG and doubles), perfect sound mixes, special editions of the prequels including redone CG, particularly on TPM (we already know they've done Yoda) and some additional ADR on ROTS to stop Palpatine sounding like a retard (how by the Christ did they allow 'NO...NO...NO...YOU will die!' in the movie?). CG Palpatine's face in AOTC to get rid of the dumb makeup they applied to him when they stupidly thought he was going to gradually look like he does in the Original Trilogy etc. c) Give us ALL the deleted content once and for all, OT and prequels, and put some of the prequel scenes back in like the extended Qui-Gon/Maul ramp fight in TPM.
NO WAY!!!

This site is propagated by Star Wars, and the bulk of the news covered is that of movies which are blatantly based on the Star Wars formula. News about Gorgo or Universal Monsters ain't paying the rent, pal. All you have to do is drop the "Lucas" bomb in a post and that talkback rockets to the top. Pay your respects, is all Im saying. I don't think the coverage has been worthy of the history. I expected more from you.

salad. Seriously Knowles, it's not about anyone being better anyone else. It's about you pandering to the biggest fandom that has ever existed, and never truly ever getting how WE -- good or bad -- work. You just dont get it. Bashing what Lucas wrote...demostrates this in spades. So, seriously Knowles, please stop pandering to me. You are not down. It happens. Nevertheless, this is as big as it gets, and it's 30 years old. Suck on that everyone else and their piker fucking properties that have neither moved nor touched as many people as this...SAGA.

by Bronx Cheer
May 25th, 2007

No, it was the film. The film came first. Giving yourself credit for being a cool audience is silly. The audience didn't make the film, nor did it make the film successful. The quality of the film attracted the audience, and we spent our money, but it was not because we were an awesome gang. If no one had shown up, the film would still have been terrific, just unappreciated.

The best thing about Star Wars was the audience? No, it wasn't.

In the international world of cultural fanboy fandom, there are bigger things. Godzilla, King Kong, Star Trek, Superman, Batman, Spiderman, um...Tolkein, Walt Disney, zombie flicks... and that's just the world of fantasy. And I think the only female I ever met who gave a damn about the Star Wars franchise was wearing a Princess Leia outfit at a comic book convention. The original Star Wars trilogy flicks are not the end all be all. I don't even think they hold up as well today, anymore. I tried watching New Hope a while back and was bored to yawning. I have to say there was probably more going on in a half hour of any one of the Star Wars prequel movies than in all three Original Trilogy films combined. The Original Trilogy just had Harrison Ford and a cool Yoda puppet going for it. I think it's just big for males who grew up in that era because it was the only good sci-fi adventure flick around and Lucas made the good move of turning Star Wars into an ongoing story with Empire Strikes Back just like his good buddy Francis Coppola did with the equally popular Godfather series. That being said, I was thrilled by the Star Wars movies as a kid, and got a great nostalgic laugh out of Vader Sessions.

My son called me today to remind me of the 30th anniversary. On May 25, 1977, I was in my late 20s and a teacher. On the way home from school I stopped by NorthPark in Dallas and bought a ticket for the first showing. (George Lucas had personally overseen the sound system installation). There was a medium length line when I went back for the movie, and walked right in (the line for the next showing was out of sight). I think they missed the fire dept. limit on this one--people were sitting in the aisles--not a single seat empty. I had seen the trailer earlier that Spring and couldn't wait to see it--no one in that audience had ever seen anything quite like it--oh, we had read adventures like this, but no movie had ever captured SF like this. I best remember the scene when the Millenium Falcon first went into hyper-drive, a dude about 10 rows in front of me stood up and cried out: "Hot Damn!", but in a thick Texas drawl. My oldest son reveled in Star Wars toys for years--and when Empire premiered he and I were there at NorthPark in the longest line you can ever imagine for a movie, eating burgers and fires my wife had brought us. Now he has his own family and can't wait for my 2 yr. old granddaughter to watch Star Wars with him. Great memories. Thanks, Star Wars.

I saw that vader sessions video last year and wept when I saw it. I love it when the commander onboard the Tantive IV comes up near the start and says "Lord vader?" and Vader goes "huh?" very softly. Priceless. I think all we have to say about Star Wars is that every time an article appears on here about it suddenly all other talkbacks are abandoned. Thats the power of Star Wars right there.

Yeah, finally the USPS can't deny the possibilities of marketing to the fanboy demographic. I know my grandmother will be in line to buy up a few... And, hmm, let's look at other recent movies or sci-fi that had stamps before George Lucas's dark empire took over the US Postal Service...E.T., Jurassic Park, Star Trek, Titanic... As for LOTR, I believe New Zealand released an official set of postal stamps. Wait for America...too soon. I'd say the Tolkein universe (movies and books included) is bigger than the Star Wars universe...LOTR doesn't have a Jar-Jar Binks or midichlorians...

New Zealand issued LOTR stamps! WOW! The global powerhouse that is New Zealand honored LOTR. New Zealand, the taint of Australia that broke off and floated away. Fuck New Zealand. Sure, LOTR doesn't have Jar Jar Binks, but it also lacks Darth Vader, Luke Skywalker, and R2D2, names nearly anyones grandmother could identify with more clarity than Smeagol or Frodo. What LOTR DOES have is various bands of quasi-homosexual campers romping around for six hours, seven if you stay awake through the ending of ROTK. I was desperately searching for a fire hose and a crowbar while watching Merry & Pippin and Sam & Frodo. Brokeback Mountains' got nothing on this shit. Say what you want about Star Wars, at least the gay character were out of the closet. C3PO and R2D2 are trailblazers.

is coming from. In these politically correct times any troublemaking office bitch or corporate asshole could get you fired if they saw you looking at the 1st clip. The cunt would run into the bosses office and then: 'because, you know, that stuff degrades women, it..could..be..my sister..in..that....bahwahwah' just because they don't like you in the 1st place!! It happens, dude.

I have no interest in attacking Harry and don't think he needs to defend himself but I want to point something out. As a rule my 12 year old daughter doesn't visit this site and there's rarely anything here that I feel the need to show her. this is a hard core fan site and there's going to be swearing and off color comments and that's cool I know what to expect. However when I see something titled "Star Wars fun" and some clips I figure it would be safe to let my daughter sit beside me and watch it, since she too is a huge Star Wars fan". Luckily I was spared the discomfort of explaining why we suddenly had a close up of beaver and blue ass cheeks wiggling in front of the camera by the fact that she just happened not to be home. Yeah I know the beaver was covered but it is what it is, while you may consider this tame there really should have been a warning along with your intro. There are a lot of really young kids who love everything associated with Star Wars and I don't feel like explaning why men like to watch women gyrate to my daughter just yet. Basically something that we share that is pure and fun would have turned into an uncomfortable situation for both of us. Mostly for her because while she's going through changes she's happy to just keep being dad's little girl and that's fine with me. So while you may have found this harmless I think you need to show a little more consideration for just how many generations the Star Wars fanbase covers. I really don't need to hear Harry jump into a monologue about what he allows his nephew to see and how the boy takes it in stride, that's cool and that's your choice. Respect my choice to know want to know what I'm about to watch with my daughter. Put up a simple warning next time, it's not that hard.

It doesn't even sound like him. They could have chosen any voice. I like the first one better and it isn't that great.

Your 12 year old daughter is already probably blowing guys. I'm sure she can handle some thing that tame. She's no longer your "little girl"...deal with it.

Somebody had used more of Field of Dreams dialogue, and when the trooper reported about the X-Wing fighters he snaps "Don't come to me, be a leader, I want my privacy!" It was great. But hey, these are nice too. Big Sonofabitch. They should try to fix the "Nooooo" in ROTS sometime. Also the cell phone one should be playing in theaters instead of that lame feel good shit with Forest Whitaker.
