This is my first post and I almost got a FIRST. Would'a had it 'cept I had to open an account. May as well actually write something now. This would be fantastic, but I swear I won't pay a dime to watch them if Lucas is directing. Same for the shows. I'd ignore them on purpose if he's doing anything other than producing. It's a shame to have so much creativity and not know how to make it work on the screen. Maybe he lost it, maybe he never had it. I love that interview with Ford where he discusses how clueless Lucas is about the Acting process. Well Ep I,II,& III proved he didn't learn anything in 17-20 years. He's had 3 chances to prove he's not a director anymore. If he ever actually was, it atrophied from lack of use. He's a technical director at best. Stick to Producing George

The empire is in ruins. Out of the darkness comes the far Christian Right and makes life a million times worse for the citzens of the galaxy. Luke is not around to fight on account of his suicide years earlier - the pain of realising all his thoughts for his sister years earlier has rendered him both impotent and bald. He is in the watch wing of a psycho hospital. Han shot himself around the same time - he started gambling heavily after Leia started going Jewish Princess on him, and ended owing the Ewok Mafia billions. The only one left now is Leia. When the Christian Army show up on Endor to shut down their casinos, she takes up arms with R2D2 - who had killed 3PO in a jealous rage some time ago - and fights to the death. The final scene - Leia is cornered by thousands of PriestBots, and rather than have the compulsary lobotomy they demand, she slits her own throat with Luke's old lightsaber. The empire is reborn, and all non-believers are herded into cattleships to be "cleansed". Directed by Mike Leigh. There is room for a sequel though - R2 gets away, and only Luke's ghost knows he's carrying a genetic biological weapon that could exterminate all life in the universe - except for Space Arabs (you know - Sand People)

I would still like to see another average Star Wars film, rather than none at all. It could have an earlier Sith, like the one Palpatine was mentored by, with a more noble side like he hinted at. The little green cunt could be in it again, and nobody would be judging back stories because there is nothing to connect it to, just fucking more light sabres and a lot of experience on Lucas' side about what people will put up with. Bring it on you beardy bastard.

Retire Lucas. The 3 prequels have proven you havent got the focus to make anything of quality. Just retire and enjoy the billions you have made in licensing toys , fast food ,and the ILM cash cow. Let Star Wars rest in peace. How much money do you need anyway George? If there were to be a an Old Republic movie then you should stay clear of it. Totally. But most fans are tired now. We dont need it. George retire. Go on a holiday .

I don't know about you, but my childhoods ass is quite sore. I'm prety much beyond caring about Star Wars at this point. I've got great memories of Star Wars & Empire & thats about it. Lucas had his shot & fucked it up bigtime. If he hands the reigns over to someone else, maybe something good might come of it, but I won't hold my breath.

...and what happened to all his "small experimental films"? Lucas should just concentrate on ILM & advancing the state of digital filmmaking, etc. In other words: Tech stuff. He's got the vision and the resources to be good at that.

Star Wars - We Were Jedi Once
by Paulseta
May 25th, 2007
04:23:54 AM
Synopsis: The last of the Jedi Knights teams up with a renegade cop to take down a drug smuggling operation. The Jedi is Luke, the drug kingpin is Lando. When Luke discovers who is behind the galaxy of blow, his partner tries to turn Lando in... and Luke is forced to betray his own sidekick for the sake of an old friend. C3PO, who is Luke's "housemate" discovers what he has done and tells Leia, who lures Luke to a church and has him arrested. In jail, Luke finds himself in the same cell as Han, who is doing 10-20 for shipping body parts across the galaxy to rich media barons on worlds that are short of bits (and they cost an arm and leg). Luke and Han come up with a plan to escape, but before they can put it into play, a guilty Leia busts them out - with Lando by her side! Now all of them are on the run from the law - there's only one place for them to hide: Endor... where Wicket and the rest of the Ewoks are only too happy to help them blend in and become like they are - 4 foot tall toys. The game may be up when a curious 3PO comes looking for them - with the cops not far behind. When the whole planet is engulfed in a cloud of radioactive gas and dead Ewoks start returning to life, the fugitives and the cops have to work together to stay alive - and get to the Falcon! Think Witness crossed with The Shawshank Redemption by way of Day of the Dead, with a twist*. (*: Alright, there's no twist).

If this celebration is going to be a big deal, can there at least be a big deal? A new movie would do it for me. Especially if Lawrence Kasdan was going to write it. Lucas is producing Red Tails and Indiana Jones and the City of the Gods and overseeing the 2 new Star Wars shows. Once they're up and running (late 2008) McCallum said that Lucas had plans for a whole raft of low-budget esoteric movies. I can't wait to see them. But if you didn't like THX its unlikely you'll like them as 'esoteric' is the key word here.
The PT: The Hype, The Anticipation, The Letdown
by colivo
May 25th, 2007
05:30:48 AM
I have to say that the best thing about the PT was the anticipation leading up to the actual movie, and all 3 movies were letdowns. I loved waiting for the movie name, the first trailer, the spoilers, it gave me goosebumps and that feeling from 77-83, and then the movie............BIG LETDOWN EVERYTIME!!! George should have stopped at ROTJ, and though he wouldn't be as rich, he would still be considered a fucking genius by every 30-something SW geek like myself, let alone a whole new generation of fans who would fall in love with the OT, and there would be no Jar Jar, no Anakin/Padme AOTC romance, no Padme losing the will to live, it would just be the Trilogy where Han still shot first, and nothing, even LOTR, came close to quality, mass appeal, and impact on movies. Now it is Star Trek, and you have a bunch of losers who are flocking to this C4 celebration and talk about the 'saga' now, which has given us a series of mediocre movies, and Lucas is laughing all the way to the bank, but he traded that for his legacy he had from 77-83.

doesnt come close to the quality of Star Wars. In fact the more I watch the LOTR movies the less I like them. completely worng my friend. I thought a lot of the prequels was shocking. I initially liked LOTR films very much but have found my interest in them waning since I have rewatched them. The pacing in LOTR is all over the place and the end of The two Towers and beginning of Return of the King would do Basil Exposition proud. The elves are not supposed to be badass, I was pointing out the changes from Tolkien's work (which I love).

he mentionned it during the prequel trilogy a few times. The games sucha s kotor AND the jedi knight games that I loved showed that this universe has huge legs for tv series and more movies. Pre-Star Wars = great story
by Vadakin
May 25th, 2007
05:54:45 AM
Forget about those expanded universe books and video games, the real story is much better.

A thousand years before the Star Wars Saga, the galaxy is in chaos. The Dark Lords of the Sith, descendants of a group of Jedi who left the Order hundreds of years before, rule the galaxy with an iron fist. Trillions of people from different worlds are enslaved under the Sith regime and the Jedi, who are peaceful, remain isolated, refusing to ask.

But with the taint of the Dark Side consuming the galaxy, the Jedi realise that things have to change - they declare war against the Sith. After a long ad fierece campaign, the Sith turn on each other, and with the Jedi winning the war, their numbers decrease until there is only one Sith Lord left, Darth Bane. Realising that the only way for the Sith to survive is to exist in the shadows, Bane creates the "Rule of Two" - one master, one apprentice. The Sith would bide their time and wait for revenge.

After the winning the war, the Jedi would hand power over to a newly formed Galactic Republic, with the Jedi as its guardians and protectors.

Remember when the prequels were announced and everyone thought that there would be armies of Jedi verses armies of Sith? Well the "Birth of the Republic" story has that...it could be a cool movie.

Now I'm one of those who would defend the prequels until my face turns blue, but even I think that Lucas should hand directing duty over to someone else. As for who it should be...not sure.

It would be nice if...

Instead of doing a film in the register of the others (30s serial, big orchestral score etc), he did films set in the universe, but in different registers. (After all, his greatest genius was the creation of that universe.) Look on SW as the Second World War. Lucas should be making fims as diverse as From Here to Eternity, The Longest Day, Downfall, Where Eagles Dare, Letters from Iwo Jima... But maybe not Schinder's List.

I still think LOTR is a great trilogy, but I meant that the OT has that rare combination of: Quality, Mass Appeal, and IMPACT. The OT changed movies forever, and the first SW was beloved by the average fan, people in my family who would never see a SciFi film. LOTR and even ESB/ROTJ were made for fans who loved the series, and The Original SW is one of the most beloved movies of all-time.

To all those PT/Lucas apologists I say, take off your rose-tinted blinkers. Do a google search for 'The Secret History of Star Wars'(TSHOSW), read it and be amazed/angered. Lucas was very lucky with SW: ANH, in that he managed to produce a classic, influential, groundbreaking piece of entertainment from what amounted to a pile of nonsensical, pretentious tripe. Lucas freely admits that he created the 'mythology' of already having Ep's 1-3 and 7-9 written at the time of ANH. In TSHOSW it is clearly demonstrated that Lucas was making the whole saga up on the fly - often writing himself into corners which he barely - or didn't - get out of, resulting in inconsistencies and gaping plot holes, often resolved with the most cliched and childish plot devices. Worse still, his reasoning behind handing off directing of ESB and ROTJ were totally finacially motivated; basically, all the profits from ANH merchandising and ESB were being pumped into building his dream project - Skywalker Ranch. He wanted ESB finished as quickly as possible so he could push the profits into the ranch; he very nearly sunk ESB with his interference because he was frustrated that Irwin Kershner was 'taking his time developing characters and story' - Lucas just wanted a quick and dirty, stylish job doing so he could get the film out and earning cash for his ranch. Ditto ROTJ. The reason Lucas never did Ep's 7,8,9 (which were always touted to be next before the prequels)was purely a combination of the fact he had earned enough money for his ranch, and he couldn't be arsed to make more SW films. He subsequently withdrew from directing after this (apart from the shitfest that was Howard the Duck). When he finally decided to return to SW and 'give us' the PT, it was a move motivated by the opportunity to showcase his new developments in technology, and secondly to wrap up the saga as a whole. Because the OT had evolved into being about Vader instead of Luke, and Vader dies in ROTJ, the only logical way for the PT to go storywise, was with Vader's 'origin'. This is why we'll never see Ep's 7-9; the saga is Vader's story and there is nothing left to tell. Again he wrote himself into a corner. If you believe that the PT was anything other than a tech-demo and a cynical marketing exercise, you need to wake up and read TSHOSW. It is no secret that the best SW films are the ones Lucas didn't direct (bar ANH), and I'll take ROTJ over ANY PT film. If Lucas directs any new SW film, prepare for serious disappointment - but then, after the PT, you should be anyway.

The Army of Light

The words "Star Wars" wouldn't even appear since Star Wars is everything that happens between 1-6. The film would also feature a completely different opening...

It starts off with teh familiar "A Long Time Ago in a Galaxy Far, Far Away..." but instead of going into an opening crawl, the movie opens with a prologue, telling the history of the Jedi, detailing how a small faction within the Order began exploring the Dark Side and when the practice of the Dark Arts was banned by the Council, the faction split from the Jedi Order and returned hundreds of years later as a massive army under the title of Dark Lords of the Sith.

There would then be a montage of the Sith taking over the galaxy before finally, the title of the film appears on the screen

The Army of Light

And the film truly begins with a Jedi Ambassador sent to Coruscant to negotiate with the Sith, only to be struck down and killed.

It then cuts back to the Jedi homeworld, (possibly Ossus) where he Council has to vote on whether to go to war or not...by a vote of 7 to 5...the motion carries and that's the last piece of politics you see until the declaration of the Republic at the end of the film. Everything else is Jedi vs Sith carnage.

I love the prequels just as much as the originals...sure Lucas sucks at dialogue and focusses to much on plot, forsaking characters, but there can be no doubt that he has a great creative mind.

I've read the Secret History of Star Wars and if anything, the e-book only reaffirms my belief in Lucas' ability to craft a story. What bugs me though as that he feels the need to lie about it, constantly contradicting himself on the origins of Vader and the prequels. I actually hink people would appreciate him more if he was just honest about how and when he came up with his various ideas, because it shows how creative he is. But the fact that he thinks he needs to cover up a lot of Star Wars history actually does more harm than good.

...to another set of film directors. The franchise would be invigorated by having fresh talent exploring the universe Lucas created. New characters, new stories. Having said that, I don't think we're gonna get that until Lucas pegs it as he's as controlling as Palpatine and doesn't want to see anyone else mess up his vision while he's alive. Maybe the 60th Anniversary we'll have definate word on a new set of SW movies (and then they'll probably remakes!), but until then, I wouldn't hold your breath.

I would suggest that Lucas is too creative for his own good - some of the early drafts of ANH read like drug-induced hallucinations rather than a coherent space-swashbuckler. As I say; we were lucky to end up with the finished product we did. ESB reeks of Lucas' non-involvement (being the best SW film - he had little to do with the film), whereas we can see an ominous warning of things to come in ROTJ - the 'musical number', ewoks etc - where he had more influence.

Consolidate the theme from the New Jedi Order series of books and make them into three movies? It would darken the tone considerably and "grow" the films up a bit considering major characters die. Plus you could cameo the OT folks like Leia and Han so that Grand Master Luke and the new jedi (including Leia and Han's kids become the primary focus). I don't buy this story--but I agree if he goes back to the Star Wars pail he needs to reinvent it and let someone else taek the reigns. In the expanded universe the great stories are the New Jedi Order, the original Thrawn trilogy (except most of the OT players are two old now to play those parts) and the Jedi Academy stuff (how Luke got the order off the ground again). A Yoda origin story would be cool and one I think most likely to happen since Lucas has always been quiet about Yoda's backstory. Out here.

This is going to be my last post on any Star Wars talkback. Here we are, on the 30th birthday of a film we all love and feel very passionate about and all you miserable twats can do is slag of the guy who created it!!! I for one and I suspect many thousands of overs around the world am in the middle of a viewing of all 6 films in episode order and enjoying the hell out of them... ALL of them. I like the new ones as much as the old ones. It doesn't make me a Lucas luvvie, it doesn't mean I have no taste and it doesn't mean I'm blinded by hype. All six films have faults if you pick away at them (yes even Empire). Its because of some of the comments I'm reading that 'normal' people view Star Wars fans with such disdain. Lucas can remake the original trilogy using hamsters for all i care. It's my choice to see it or not. And one last thing, Lucas owes you precisely fuck all! Get over it and move on. Peace out.

Settle down, Corky. That's great that you enjoyed all of Lucas' work. It means unlike us "miserable twats" you didn't feel cheated out of your money when you paid to see the prequels. But expressing disdain for Lucas' recent work is just as valid an expression of opinion as expressing support for his recent work, which is what you have done. Also, these "normal" people you speak of, are they located only in the UK or in the US too? The point is, there is no "normal", especially when talking about opinions. The fact that Star Wars has grossed so much and has six main movies with more on the horizon invalidates your argument that there are "normal" people. If a movie is that well received and has that much traffic, then "normal" would constitute being a fan of the series. In short, you're a moron who opened his mouth to blast people. That is different from what other people are doing in this talkback, how?

My main problem with Lucas as a director is the fact that he allowed Episodes II and III to be so tainted with the uncomfortably bad performance of Hayden Christensen. When I see a Star Wars movie, the last thing I want to do is cringe in my seat out of embarrassment for the film. No, Hayden was not successfully conveying the insecurities of Anakin Skywalker. He was conveying the shitty acting of Hayden complemented by the poor character direction of George "Looks good to me!" Lucas.

Oh yeah, one more thing. Fortunately, the world doesn't work according to your machinations. There are more options that A: Pay to go see the movie or B: Don't pay to go see the movie. There is C: Express opinion before movie is made in the hopes that your opinion is listened to and a quality movie can be made which you will pay to go see, thus, everyone ends up happy. Gotta love the internet for adding options.

He may have lost his way quite badly, but you have to give Lucas all the credit in the world for making the original film (ANH, if you like) as good as it is. Jesus, that could have been some horrible shit - a golden robot and a giant hairy dog thing and swords made out of light and whatnot - but it wasn't because Lucas worked his ass off to get his vision onscreen. I'll be the first to take the piss out of today's Lucas, but that guy back in the mid-seventies new EXACTLY what he was doing.

Lucas has been adament about no more movies. I think this is just a misquote turned rumor. I of course would see whatever it was if the rumor turns out to be true. I really don't think the prequels were as horrible as most say. I thought AOTC was the flattest of the bunch but TPM and ROTS were not bad at all. I'm sorry, I don't analyse star wars movies like they are the Bible. They are fun movies with a pretty good story. It would be nice to see another movie, but I still think its a rumor.

I always liked ROTJ, but saw its flaws, and thought it was just a hiccup by Lucas & Co back in 1983. But after the PT, and seeing its flaws, you see that ROTJ was the beginning of the end, and atleast he had Marquand directing, and Kurtz writing so there couldn't be too much cheese in the movies like Jar Jar and C3PO bad jokes on Geonosis crap. If ESB was just good sequel instead of being a classic, most people would look at SW movies and say, "Great original, and a series of good to bad sequels."

Lost is gorgeous to look at, but no one critices that. They criticise it for being a show that wants you to forget as many plotpoints as possible until they decide they are relevant. Which ties in with Star Wars because like Lucas, Lost was once awesome and is now a shadow of what it was.

Everyone should find The Evil Genius Orchestra's "Cocktails In The Cantina" today. It's loungy-mixes of the Star Wars music. The Imperial March sounds like Ricky Ricardo orchestrated it!

First of all I'd get away from the Skywalker family. Their story is over. I think they ruined it with that comic book Legacy. Cade Skywalker? Please.....

Anyway, my movie wouldn't necessarily be set before or after the last films. I had an idea that they would be self-contained and there wouldn't be any cameos or anything to link them to Lucas' films except for the vehicles which would be similar in look but very different than those in past films. There would still be Coruscant and other planets we've seen but otherwise these are all new in terms of characters.

Now the question is, who would be the main character? Well I thought three main characters would be cool. But the main player I think would be a female this time and the two other main characters would be male. All Jedi in training, about to complete their ascension into knighthood when the shit starts to go down.

Storywise, important people are being killed. A prominent Senator, a powerful Jedi Master, and a few other people are being picked off (haven't gone into a lot of detail as of who). The only clue is that the master was killed in a lightsaber duel. Naturally, the Jedi think the Sith are behind it but I think that should only be revealed in the last film as to whom, with no discenable clues which would be great as you'd be surprised as who it is.

The films would have epic battles (obviously), a love triangle (a good one), and of course, ground-breaking lightsaber duels and jedi + sith kicking ass. Also, who doesn't want to see a hot female jedi kicking ass? I don't think we got to see any of that from the original or prequel trilogy.

I might do it as a comic book or something, if not a film. But one can dream right?

I love his early SW music to death, especially TESB, but he is the another part of the problem if another movie is made. He hasn't come up with a truly inspired SW score IMO since TESB. ROTJ was ok, but his work on the prequels was kind of so-so, and he borrowed a lot from previous movies. Maybe the problem wasn't so much that it wasn't in him to deliver a great score, or that he's getting older, in so much as it was that he wasn't inspired to come up with something all that special based on what he was seeing on-screen. Who knows... Given a great movie to score, maybe he will do it right though, like the old days.

they are the soundtracks of my life. Star Wars, Raiders, Jaws, E.T.... it's all there. I can remember a time I was in Austin and came out of the capital building w/ a friend and heard the Main Title Theme blaring across the lawn. At first I thought I was being delusional, but Joe heard it too. So we tried to 'follow' the sound to figure out where it came from. Did not work. We followed it to where we thought it came from, only to find it was a Texas records depository of extreme boringness, and not even any speakers! So, to this say it is a mystery. If that theme weren't so damn infectious we would not have been running across the Texas capital building lawn in search of the source. Also: I know a guy who used to warm up w/ his bagpipes by playing Star Wars music. How cool is that? E.T.'s music will still make me well up with tears in parts, and Indy's theme makes me want to kick some Nazi ass! Thank you, John Williams, for what you've brought to my life. The lives of millions. The imagination of generations has been enriched by your music, reaching us in the dark of the theatre.

Star Wars should be like the Bond films, I've always thought it had a better chance of being a mega-franchise than Indy. In fact, I think Lucasfilm should have several movies, TV shows, cartoons etc. all going at once. All overseen by Lucasfilm but each thing being handled independently by different creative forces. Kinda like what's been done already with the books & games but on a bigger scale...like SW being more of a genre unto itself rather than just a franchise. It seems Lucas is already on this track with television "TV is the future" but why not oversee some film productions as well? How 'bout Spielberg, M Night, Copppola, even Kevin Smith SW movies coming out all the time, a movie or maybe even two a year. It would sure keep ILM busy, and in the meantime Lucas could finance his own 'little" movies too, and fans who were somewhat disappointed by the prequels would have all kinds of different movies/takes on the SW Universe to look forward to....why not? Go all Disney-style, I wouldn't mind SW becoming a full-on cash-cow brand-name if there is some serious talent unleashed upon it...allowed to play in the SW-pool. I'm there would be some great flicks that would come out of...bring balance back to the force.

Lucas and spielberg, in making there movies(all of which i enjoyed) is the way in which editors of Magazines reacted to these films. Its like as if no great film came before star wars and close encounters. Gone with the wind, singing in the rain, movies by john wayne, the marx bros, laurel and hardy. some of these movies were ground breaking and of course Casablanca or the maltese falcon. or high Society. These are all classics. But on this site they rarely get a mention. Its same in movie magazines. because they were made before 1977. they are old hat or something.

I'm sure I'm not the only 30 plus year old fan to realise that at the age of 10 when I first saw ANH I was obviously a child and therefore loved what I was seeing on the screen. At thirteen I was just old enough to grasp the complexity and sombre story of ESB. Three years later I along with a group of similar aged school friends whitnessed the dissapointment that was ROTJ. Yes we all know it was'nt as good as the previous films... but my point here is that what we remember with love and affection depends on how old and suceptable we are to new experiences. I remember seeing an old British film called The Amazing Mr Blunden in the early seventies, a film about children drinking a magical potion sending them back in time and in effect making them ghosts... i loved the film and i later pretended to drink a similar magical potion made out of something caled Cola. My point is is that we experience and manage stimuli at the age we were at the time. Did I realy believe that when I sat down in front of a huge screen awaiting The Phantom Meanace that i would feel the same as that ten year old boy? Sadly yes I did, and hearing the title music and titles did give me the old goose bumps... talk about a Pavlovian responce. But I realise now that we've all grown up, that wonderful magical first time experience has gone and all that's left is our wonderfully warm memories of seeing something new for the very first time. And that is what we got. When TPM was released I was looking for that child I used to be in 77, did i find it? yes, but only for the initial ten muiuites or so. For me the core reason why the prequels have been a dissapointment is that they are souless and have no warmth to the charaters... did anyone feel the same way about Anakin and Padme as they did about Han,Luke and Leia? Once again, age counts and is important when viewing film [or reading a book for that matter.] As for the rumours of Lucas planning a new prequel? Like the majority of the population of this planet, I hope he never gets near a camera lens ever again.

we know Lucas want to get into TV, but as far as movies? I think the between them doesn't exist anymore for Lucas. Those rumours recently about Lucas asking Ford if he would be interested in playing Solo again. The stuff that Hamill supposedly said about Lucas telling him to keep himself free to work in 2000-something. It's probably all bullshit, but I can't help but think that Lucas is still toying with the notion of doing some post-Ep.6 stuff. Though he might never admit it. If Lucasfilm produced more SW movies it would guarantee work to ILM etc./provide fodder for the other divisions, games etc. for years to come. I think even he felt TPM and AOTC didn't turn out quite like he hoped and maybe a couple more flicks in the vein of OT might bring balance. I'm sure he wouldn't direct again, and he might distribute the films in unusual ways...TV/IMAX/3D/DVD/WEB etc......I just get the feeling that he has an itch to do some form of post-ROTJ feature-length SW. Maybe something akin to Shadows of the Empire, only with an actual production behind the madness this time. I could be totally wrong, but I'm getting a "more movies of some kind or another in some fashion or another" vibe from the Lucas-machine.

The production values of Heroes? Was that a joke? :)

We'd get to see 2 seconds of Luke and Vader fight in a hallway, followed by 5 minutes of Yoda holding the door closed and grimacing. Heroes has terrible production values (along with mediocre writing and acting).

They replaced thin Jabba from the Special Edition with Episode One model Jabba on the DVDs.
Lucas' original plan -
by Laserbrain

was for a 12 part film series with different directors being allowed to put their individual stamps on the material. The series was intended to have a more serial-esque trajectory. I don't see why this process couldn't work from here on in, not everything has to be a trilogy. Close the book on Vader's story and let others extend the series on a film-by-film basis. Lucas would probably never do that now for fear of being shown up by a better director- as was the case with Kershsner.

Who says there can't be one more movie made? What would be wrong with an Episode 0 or an Episode 7? And there was a rumor about a year or so ago that there would be an Episode 0 made about a younger Yoda. It'd be a way to get more Star Wars without George having to commit to another trilogy.

do not suck, Jedi is bad ass, Luke dressed in black showing up at Jabba's, the pit, the final battle with Vader, far better than any of the new trilogy, far, far, far better...

the opera. Phantom is the biggest show he ever had and will ever have. It has created a devotion among its audience to the point where when the movie was being made the phans petitioned tirelessly to get Crawford to play the phantom again. Either way the movie was not a critical success. Lord Webber is now planning a sequel. and lloyd webber has admitted it will be the biggest gamble of his career. In other words lightening doesnt strike twice. Empire is a much better film I would argue. In 2005's culture show Mark Kermode Challenged Star Wars fans to a test he gave them all twenty seconds to explain what was so great and original about Star wars. They all failed. There is nothing original about star wars. nothing at all. At the start of the program Kermode dismantled the movie from top to bottom. When creating Star Wars, Lucas plundered other genres, like the western, Fritz langs metropolis, war movies, flash gordon serials, akira kurosawa movies and I could go on.

Not that I'm much of a Star Wars fanboy but...EVERY director/writer is influenced by other genres. Producing a work that is a synergy of these various genres IS originality. There's nothing wrong with being influenced by others. It's a shame that we view this as a "lack of originality".

Lucasfilm should form 4 separate but cooperative teams, each of which is responsible to produce about one hour of badass Star Wars content every 2 years. Every summer they would put 2 of them together and release them to theatres. One part could be a new stand alone story, and the other would be a continuation from the previous summer. ***Lucasfilm could even set up a "minor league" type system, bringing up it's own writers, directors, actors and crew in order to maintain the highest quality possible.. and to have them on contract so they wouldn't cost as much. Train them on the TV show and graduate them to the film crews. ***Lucas grew up loving serials. It would be very inspiring to the younger generation if they had a system like that to strive for.
