Star Wars: Episode -3: Dooku Rising - The first in a trilogy devoted to a young jedi who looks a bit like Dracula and dreams of never having important bits of himself cut off.

Recruiting Private Ryan - A bunch of brothers sign up for service in WWII. How many of them will survive?

Bruce Wayne Begins - The likable and entirely angst-free son a billionaire plays a lot of catch with his dad, but young Bruce has a date with destiny. Whatever could it be?

It's a flattering comment, really. He is far and away the most talented director to have attempted a prequel (Fire Walk With Me) and even he failed. Hence, if he couldn't make it work, how can anyone else?

Now, if you want to accuse me of dissing Fire Walk With Me, that's fair enough. That film sucks fifty-seven varieties of ass. Poo, what a stinker!

A younger versoin of DeNiro would have to be the camo made by the 2 by 4 plank of wood in The Rocks Walking Tall. The scene in the casino where the piece of wood smashes up the machines is in prime position for the Capone role. What is it with De Palma anyway? He only makes mafiaporn for 50 people in New York. Hollywood is guilty of giving the Mafia a glamour they dont deserve. And De palma is doing so now. Wubbish.
I hereby accuse Mr Marmoset of dissing Lynch!

It's dull, it doesn't add anything to the story we already know from the series, and it has a horrible central performance from Sheryl ALL MY EMOTIONS ARE TURNED UP TO ELEVEN! Lee. Also, no Sherilyn Fenn, and what is Twin Peaks without Sherilyn Fenn. Goddamnit, she was hot back then.

So, you say you understand it. Help a guy out, would you? What am I missing?

If I've missed the point of Fire Walk With Me, can someone tell me what it is? I'm a big Lynch fan, so it gives me no joy to slate one of his films. I found it to be a dull retread of information already gleaned from the series, and I thought any attempt at portraying the tragic downfall of Laura Palmer was undone by Lee's over-acting. I've been told numerous times that I don't 'get it', but no one's been forthcoming with an explanation.

I hereby throw down the gauntlet to all Fire Walk With Me fans! Help a poor, ignorant Englishman understand this film!

I think you may be right. Lee's performance was a big stumbling block for me. It's supposed to be a tragedy, this poor girl with her horrible life and her horrible dad, but she was so overwrought that it came off as laughable. Way too over the top for my taste. Was that the point? I don't know, but if it was deliberate, it seems like a shitty way to tell a story about a girl who was raped and murdered by her own father.

I gave it another chance recently (after watching the Twin Peaks box sets - how great was that show?) and it left me cold. Lynch hits all the plot point he's supposed to, but with the series still fresh in my mind it all felt a bit redundant. I already know about James and Bobby and Leo and all that. I know about her dad/Bob taking her and Ronette to the train car. Everything was old news. All I could think about throughout the film was, 'Why is such a talented man spending all this time going over ground he's already covered?'

Ah, well, we disagree, but at least we can disagree in a civilised manner. As for cameron1975willi, I'm going to assume he's taking a while to respond because he's composing an essay filled with insight that will blow my mind and completely turn me around on this Fire Walk With Me issue. Maybe...

OK, I haven't seen a script. But if the script doesn't involve long dialog scenes for Capone. As long as the part of Al Capone involves lots of no more than 3 sentences at a time. Al Capone should be played by Domenick Lombardozzi. He was on Entourage as Dom, on The Wire as Det. Thomas 'Herc' Hauk and Miami Vice as Switek. He's a natural as Capone, he's not very well known, which plays perfect for this part and he looks like a young Al Capone if he grew his hair back.

I still think David Lynch should direct (and perhaps write) a season of 24. He's already worked with Kiefer (who played a federal agent in FWWM), and he could recruit some of the other agents from the movie and show (Chris Isaak, David Bowie, Miguel Ferrer, David Duchovny) and really screw around with people (like, perhaps, having the countdown clock start moving backwards). That's my dream. Plus, his work is full of good-looking women.

Just thought i'd put the two topics together. Anyways I'd like to see anybody from the Departed but Dicaprio. Matt Damon, Mark Wahlberg or outside of that flick they can go with Micheal Imperioli or Val Kilmer. On a seperate note I'm going to throw this out there for everyone to get pissed over, I don't like David Lynch or his weird ass movies. I don't pretend to "get it" when a movie spends thirty minutes showing a midget slow dance or grass growing on the ceiling or what ever the fuck the director trys to pass off as "art" .Thats my dumb opinion and i'm sure I stand alone on that one. I thought what Verbenski did in ATW was very artistic in certain scene's so maybe i'm way off.

Call it 'Capone Rising: In The Hood'. Here's the pitch: Will Ferrell is a down and out two-bit hood who's afraid of his own shadow. Enter a rough and tumble gangster on the rise from the mean streets of Chicago named J.J. 'Bootsy' Washington played by Chris Tucker. Bootsy teaches young Albert Capone to be a tough guy in a comical gangster coming of age movie fun for the whole family. Except in the end when Capone shoots Bootsy in the face with a machine gun and destroys an orphanage, thus marking his full transformation to the ways of the mafia. Cameo's by Ben Stiller as Druggie #4, Owen Wilson as Funny Cop, Jack Black as a Dancing Whore and Vince Vaughn as Papa Ness.

Over the last decade he has made some of the worst films I have ever seen. Especially The Black Dahlia, which was just behind X3 as the worst of last year. May 25th, 2007
02:43:36 PM
The best guy to plausibly play a younger verson of the caharacter DeNiro realized, although the man is by no means the same actor as DeNiro, is Ed Norton - and he and Gerard Butler share a certain theatricality that's very in touch with DePalma's style and the Untouchables as a film. DePalma would go for that quirky, slightly hyper perfomance so many directors have screwed up with Norton, and he's det it right. Ed could leave that performance behind him finally, get challenged in a way he can't be by stuff like Italian Job, and Gerard Butler would have someone worthy to argue semantics with afore cracking upside the chops with a fist like a canned ham.

Fire Walk With Me is the single greatest portrayal of the effects of incest on a family I've ever seen put to film. It stripped away the layers of metaphor the show was built around and exposed what was underneath. The scene at the dinner table alone, when Wise is berating Lee about her dirty fingernails, is scarier than 92% of the crap that passes for 'horror' these days. Although I wouldn't call it Lynch's best film, it is my favorite.

Thanks to you both for the comments. Anton - I get what you're saying, but like I said ealier, I think Lee is cute as all hell but a horrible actress, and her constant over-emoting pulled me right out of the story. That kind of exaggeration only works in comedies for me. chia - If you're thinking about watching the series again, you should do it as soon as you can. I watched the DVD sets recently (not having seen it since it first aired on telly) and I was floored by how good it was, especially season one. That pilot episode is better than most feature films.

If he could do the accent of course. I think he'd be a good Capone.

he's need to pack it on a bit, but dammit - he's an awesome actor.

I can't imagine anyone doing a better young version of Deniro's Capone. I know he isn't that old but they could make that work. When I saw Gangs of New York I thought he was amazing. That movie wouldn't have been anything without him. He's perfect for capone.

Ribisi is really good, the best choice so far IMHO, especially if he gained a few pounds.

Chiklis would be better if he was slightly younger.

JASON ALEXANDER? To see him do a Capone freak out would be downright scary! Nobody would see it coming because most people relate him to his Costanza character. Throw a rug on his melon to de-age-ify him a bit... It's the most odd choice, but inspired nonetheless.

...That is, if they couldn't get DeNiro de-age-ified X3 style.
