You're absolutely right. This looks like one of the few movies where it might actually work, but improv has basically taken over comedies these days and I think the vast majority of the time it totally sucks. Nobody writes actual comedy anymore.

I saw this back on May 1 at a screening at my university. Honestly very funny and kind of moving in an odd way. The story stands up very well on its own. Do not miss this movie, glad to see some original stuff during the summer of sequels. I'm sure some of you are out seeing Pirates right now, but so far the sequels are 0 for 2. Knocked Up is great, Superbad looks super funny. Summer of Seth Rogen!

The dialog and delivery is funny, but it isn't as funny out of context. In the movie this would kill. As it is, it made me chuckle, but it seems like, I don't know, comedy for comedy's sake out of context. Still funnier than anything in Wild Hogs, though :-)

Every guy is an idiot, and women are glorious little angels for putting up with them. 1) You got the women, because it makes them feel superior and not have to take responsiblity for their own insecurities. 2) You got the guys, because they can feel loved for basically being sheep and never having to take responsibility for their own insecurities. 3) You got the critics, because they're mostly men and will do anything to prove that they're cool and masculine, including confirming that they are idiots and immature, because they're men. 4) You have the film fans for all the reasons listed above. 5) You have everyone because "Its just a movie!" ...Thus, the future of cinema: A bunch of guys sitting around high and/or drunk, confirming every generalization in the book, flipping the generalizations around to prove how much more ignorant they are, then giving each other high fives for being high and/or drunk, because being high and/or drunk proves how normal and cool they are, even though they had just tried to get laughs proving how uncool they are. ...60 million dollar opening weekend.

Explain: Doesn't advance the story?
by Black Satin 2
May 25th, 2007
05:26:37 AM
Most of the time, good scenes are cut out of comedies because they don't advance the story. THat scene seemed to be a pretty nice bonding scene between the two actors. It wasn't dull; it wasn't overly gross and the payout hit the nail on the head. Now if I see a scene that doesn't do that to me, I'm going to remember seeing that scene and wish it was in there. Isn't it possible they could place that scene in if it winds up on a cable channel like FX?

I fear you're sort of right about the way some of these comedies are going. Most of these guy characters in these flicks are a bunch of losers. Very typical "regular guy" stereotypes as seen in beer commercials. I did find 40YoV to be a funny movie, but one of the main points was these guys who think they're cool and know all about the world turned out to be just as -- or more -- fucked up than Carell's character. Uh, but I'm babbling. More to the point, there seems to be a growing "men are stupid neanderthals" theme all over TV, ads and movies. Can we even out to a nice "men and women are both stupid" middle ground?
Oh, and Brokeback Mountain jokes?

the men are "Very typical "regular guy" stereotypes as seen in beer commercials." I hate that. The other woman character is so horrible and when she gets hers, it is just sweet. The point is, the girls aren't angels. It is a little more realistic, like Freaks and Geeks. But not realistic like, life.

by Reynard Muldrake

A.) Don't have a sense of humor B.) Haven't seen the movie. ("spoiler") This is that much funnier (as a scene, deleted or not) because in the movie (also got to an advance screening and loved it), Seth Rogen and his Compadres are trying to start a website that tells visitors the exact minute/second in every movie that nudity appears...so all they do is sit around and watch movies with remote and clipboard in hand all day and have hilarious conversations about them. C.) Don't have a sense of humor. "Hahuhha...what?"

Stiller, Vaughan, the Wilson brothers and Ferrell are done. From now on, it's Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, that kid from the Mac commercials, George Michael (not the real George Michael, he's not very funny at all and he always has a cock in his mouth) and whoever else they can round up.

True Jonah Hill Story

May 25th, 2007
12:23:12 PM
A couple years ago, I was working on this online thingie for a client (I'm an ad guy) and we needed someone to kinda be the site's tour guide and say occasional funny things. I suggested (nay, demanded) Jonah Hill based on his all too brief scene in 40-Year-Old Virgin. Well, long story short, I ended up getting overruled and they went with Dmitri Martin. Who? Exactly. Fortunately, the whole thing ended up getting shitcanned, otherwise I'd have had to go upside some people's heads.

People in the REAL world laugh. In 40YO Virgin the characters laughed at each other all the time. People laugh...and what he was saying could make you laugh if you a) thought it was funny, or b) thought he was crazy. Nothing wrong with laughing in a scene where somebody is ranting.

This scene would have been funnier (perhaps) if Brokeback jokes were not run into the ground a long time ago. I must also point out that Southpark pretty much put a nail in the coffin for gay-movie jokes, years prior to the release of "Brokeback" with their "Gay cowboys eating pudding" joke. I am looking forward to Superbad, but knocked up just does not seem a funny enough premise to sustain a whole movie. On another note, I got something that will top this scene. It's from the funniest show on t.v. right now; PeeP Show in England. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v =gCL-qnBQzUo

That movie no fucking in it at all. Oh right, so America is such a bunch of pussies that it can't watch two guys rummaging fully clothed in half-darkness. There was more sex in Wilde (1997), for Chrissakes. Every country in Europe has done mainstream films that were gayer and sexier than BM for years.
