Isnt' it funny because his buddy RR is making the film, it isn't a remake, but likely a "re-envisioning" of the original film, sans the campiness. A serious Barbarella film? Yawn.

Barbarella has a place very dear in my heart. That flick hit me hard during puberty, and just like JAWS has me looking over my shoulder even in 4 ft swimming pools, I still get a insta-woody every time I think of Jane in those half ripped off, canary pecked, chucky doll chomped space vixen outfits. Im elated a hard R remake is on the way but as scary as a Drew Barrymore starring role was Im even less enthused if that pasty husband snatchin Rose Mcgowan gets it. Ugh, on Im the fence on this one till I hear who gets the nod.

What's this "remake" delusion?
by Napoleon Park
May 21st, 2007
11:33:36 PM
I thought I pissed in the mouth of this stupidity last time. "Barbarella" is a French COMIC BOOK that was collected in Graphic Album form, in about four or five books (only the first and maybe second were ever translated into English.) Just because there was a movie about this comics character made forty yeas ago DOES NOT mean that a new movie about this COMICS character will be a remake of the previous movie. Unless you think "Batman Returns" was a remake of "Batman (1966)". Ot that the Jane Punisher was a 'remake' of the Dolph Punisher. or that the new Hulk Movie will be a remake of the previous Hulk movie, and that one was a remake of "Trial Of the Incredible Hulk". By the way, did you see the preview cilp of John Rambo, the 'remake' of First Blood?

Also, there have been twenty James Bond movies. Why do they keep remaking "Dr. No" over and over again every couple of years? Oh, and was "Spider-Man 3", the remake of "Spider-Man", as bad as everyone said?

Okay, is this still unclear? The new Barbarella movie will not be a remake of the forty year old Barbarella movie just because they were both inspired by the same comic book series. And it is not a franchise, a continuation or a sequel. It is a new movie based on the same source, but I doubt it will have exactly the same plot. it's not like remaking 'Hamlet', after all, it's not Shakespeare, it's a French comic book.

by Napoleon Park
May 21st, 2007
11:42:37 PM
...the reason Sin City was so acclaimed wasn't the tone or the multiple short story format or the black and white plus one color gimmick and it certainly wasn't the 'dark and gritty' film noir tone or the over the top violence. What was GOOD about Sin City was that it was faithful to the source material - that it practically used the comics as a template and followed it. And THAT was the trick that also worked for "The 300".

Barbarella was ahead of it's time as a comic book in 1962 France and may be revolutionary in conservative 21st century America. Or it may seem behind the times and quaint. Rodriguez will have to stay as close to the original comic book material as possible and still 'reinvent and update' where needed to keep it from coming off as 'campy'. Unless he considers the other '60s film's campiness an asset and wants to go that way with it. Which could be an error, but it's his call and he's earned a certain amount of our trust. Anyway, couldn't think of a better man for the job.

This is a great movie for Robert, after the disappointment of Grindhouse, but could he get someone else to polish the finished script, as the screenwriters (Wade & Purvis) doing this film are fucking hacks. Ladies like Monica Belluci and Salma are unfortunately both now about 10 - 12 years too old, if this is meant to have any franchise potential. Age, looks and sex appeal wise, Diora Baird or Kelli Garner would be good for the lead role.

You give a bunch of examples of sequels to prove that this movie isn't a remake and then go on to say that it isn't even a sequel. How does that even make sense to you? If you want to say it's a reimagining, knock yourself out. You'll get a cookie for calling it a reboot. But a movie called Barbarella coming years after another movie called Barbarella is generally going to be thought of as a remake, or at best a long awaited sequel until anyone hears otherwise. I read no plot summary did you? If not, then how do you know what it is or isn't?

This is a comic that will never be seen on the silver screen-- At least not faithfully. Why? They'll never get past the need to have a sexually-active, frequently-nude underage girl and loads of ultra-violence. Still. . . It would be an amazing NC-17 flick if anyone ever had the guts to make it.

Not bad for the time in its own way, and Fonda's ridiculously hot in it, but even as a kid I remember not being impressed by the movie itself - it felt kind of stiff, and not the "Jesus, look at young Jane Fonda" kind of stiff, either. Mario Bava came out soon afterwards with DANGER: DIABOLIK, which to me is the far more satisfying of that batch of Euro comic book movies. Let RR have his fun, the original will always be there and there are far worse directors who could have taken this gig - what if they gave it to the NORBIT guy, or Stephen Hopkins? The R better be hard, that's all I'm saying. Pubic hair is long overdue for a comeback.

I'm mostly interested in this project because of the writers, Neal Purvis and Robert Wade. They did a terrific job on CASINO ROYALE. As for Rodriguez, I can take him or leave him. Hey Horace Cox, your opinion really does suck. Cuarón is hardly overrated, considering he made one of the best films of the last year, and probally the most technically accomplished, and really didn't receive alot of attention for it. Iñárritu? Considering the real meat of his films comes from Arriaga, and even that is plodding and pretentious, your left with a guy who has contributed a poorly handled camera and some dirty film stock to cinema (I guess Gael Garcia Bernal to world wide audiences, too, but Cauron helped with that). And Del Toro? Are you spastic? The guy who made that shitty Wesley Snipes vampire flick follow up? Or the two heartless, mechanical, plastic fantasy flicks recently? And...I think it's safe to say Barbarella is intented as a remake. I don't think the name recognition and audience demand really stems from the unread french comic books. I think it would make for a good remake though. Just to up the sex and violence and effects. Better to remake something that isn't all that crash hot to begin with. I guess Rose McGowan might be his current favourite, and she would look hot in it, but I can't see that happening. Back-in-the-underage-day Lohan would have been perfect for the role though

I really wish you and QT had left the sex in the theatrical version, and I'll bet the box-office would have been better. You can't possibly discount the word of mouth potential of guys telling other guys that hot name actresses are naked in a movie. Because when you buddy asks you if they are, and you reply "um, no, they cut those scenes out..." HOW BIG OF A DRAW IS THAT? So get back on the horse, put your gf Rose in front of the camera, tell her to do that sexy pole dance again, except this time while removing items of clothing. See, since you misspelled my name I did the same for yours. We're both so clever. ;p

A "remake" would be if they made a new movie based on the same story. Since there were a half dozen or so major story arcs of Jean-Claude Forest's comic, collected into Graphic Album form, I doubt they'll need to cover the exact same material. Although the search for Durand Durand is a key element that everyone remembers from the 1968 film (thanx to the band Duran Duran), so they might use that.

The 1968 film Barbarella was very specific to its time. It was part of the "camp" trend and the colorful "pop art" movement. See also Danger: Diabolik, Modesty Blaise, the Batman TV series, Lost In Space, etc. And the '60s was an era of social change and political turmoil and unrest. There was a reason the Beatles wrote a song called "Revolution". The character of Resistance Leader Dildano was one such "hippy revolutionary" character; very much a product of his time. in spite of being a "futuristic" sci-fi space opera comedy, there was a lot of Barbarella which now seems dated. The new film will draw from the same source material, but I suspect the interpretation will be quite updated.

Terms like 'franchise' and 'sequel' imply a continuity; that the characters in the new movie will be the same characters as in the previous film, that they will recall the events of the previous film having happened to them. Since it's set in the distant future, it's possible Rodriguez could set his film one year, or one month, or ten hours, after the previous "installment" and have the characters make reference to the events in the previous film as having just happened or having recently happened. I do not know what Rodriguez has in mind, but I doubt that is it.

If I was unclear before, I do not think "Batman Returns" was either a remake or a sequel to the 1966 Adam West "Batman" film. I guess DC and Warners might consider Batman to be a franchise character, but I don't think anyone believes the events in those two movies happened to the same version of that character, with the two films being in continuity with one another. They were just two films made nearly forty years apart based on the same comic book character, just as the two Barbarella films will be based on the same French comic book character created by Jean-Claude Forest.

I don't think "Superman Returns" was a sequel to the first Fleischer Studios Superman cartoon. (although I admit that's disingenious: "Superman Returns" was very clearly intended to be considered a sequel to "Superman II")

The Gus Van Sant "Psycho" was a close remake. The Baldwin/Basinger version of "The Getaway" was a remake. "Wrath of Khan" was a sequel to "Space Seed". The Die Hard or Bourne films are franchises: films in which each new installment happens with the same characters who lived through the previous installments. By those definitions, I do not think it would make sense to make a new Barbarella film that was a remake, sequel or franchise film in continuity with the one make 40 years ago. And based on an only passing familiarity with the work of Robert Rodriguez, I don't think that is what he plans to do.

But I'm not claiming omnisceince and I am not a betting man. I certainly could be wrong. If Rodriguez makes a shot for shot remake of the 1968 Roger Vadim "Barbarella" film, I'll certainly feel slightly embarrassed over having said that I thought that was not what he would do, in an archived public forum.

I keep forgetting that sarcasm doesn't translate well to the written page. or, if it does, it requires a better writer than I am. See, when i said the Jane Punisher was a remake of the dolph Punisher, I meant that it ISN'T. When I said all James Bond movies are remakes of Dr. No, the satirical implication is that the premise is incorrect, but it is what the people who think Barbarella 2008 will be a "remake" of "Barbarella" (1968) would think. And that they would probably be incorrect to make that assumption.

My point was that not all the Bond films were sequels or remakes of Dr. No.

You are correct, the first 12-15 films were... um, let's say "inspired" by the Ian Fleming novels (each of which I've read at least three times, so, no, I didn't forget about them) I put 'inspired' in quote; some were quite similar to the novels (Dr. No, Goldfinger), some almost a direct adaptation of the book ("On Her Majesty's Secret Service"), and some had virtually nothing to do with the novel other than the title and the names of a few characters. (The Spy Who Love Me). Some incorporated details from short stories into much longer films (The Living Daylights, Octopussy). And some were totally fabricated: the later films, after they ran out of Fleming titles, were not based on the subsequent bond novels from John Gardner or Raymond Benson.

up until Casino Royale, all the previous Bond films, in spite of the leading man cast changes, were supposed to be an in continuity franchise about the same character. For example, Lazenby's marriage is referenced in the Moore and Dalton films. There was even continuity retro-fitted in, with Blofeld and Spectre being written into the earlier bond films when he wasn't in the original novels.

All Bond movies are based on the Fleming Bond novel character, just as all Batman films, TV shows and cartoon series are based on the Bob Kane comic book character and both Barbarella movies are inspired by the Jean-Claude Forest comics that were serialized in magazine form, then collected in Graphic Albums. That was the point I was making.

It was a spoof on 60s free love peace-nicking. It won't work now. What modern social trends will they mock while remaining true to the original?

Watch out....

...I'm turning into Vern...

..Oh God! It's overtaking me..the Vern within is screaming!...

What will Barbarella now live in a futuristic society where people no longer have names and just ringtones? Will Barbarella use her Facebook messaging powers to overthrow Duran Duran? Will the labrynth of outcasts be replaced with a LOST talkback? Will the blind angel who's lost his will to fly be replaced with an American Idol hopeful who's lost their will to sing covers?

OHHHHHH GOD!!!!! Vern was right all along! Soylent remakes are made out of people! PEEEEEEOPLLLLLLE!!!!!

Sexy Spy Kids in Space. Give me a break. Take a look at the track records involved here. I don't think this is the right choice at all. Dino please ditch RR and pick up Joss Whedon. If you want to take Barbarella into the 21st century he's your man. Could you imagine Whedon's take on B? He could combine two of his strongest efforts Buffy & Firefly and really make this something special. Hire Whedon have him read Norman Spinrad's two strong sexy space opera's "The Void Captains Tale" and "Child of Fortune" for inspiration and forget the camp of the 60's film. Another option I would suggest if the Dino wants to go the camp revisionist route is Peyton Reed. Remember the spot on 60's take of Down with Love ? Either of the film makers would be a wiser choice based on their prior experience with sexy smart strong female protagonists. It's been 30 years since Star Wars and that audience has grown up. I think the time is ripe for a smart and sexy space opera. Just don't screw this one up.

by Boromir187

Danny Trejo recently said that Machete was actually given the greenlight by the Weinsteins and that Robert (who has already shot 40 minutes worth) would be filming it on the off days of his next movie, which has now been confirmed to be Barbarella. So Machete is still getting made. As for Sin City 2, according to Joe Carnahan who saw a recent mock trailer for the film that Rodriguez showed him, the film is still in active development. I suspect all three will come out next year, with Robert filming Sin City 2 as soon as he finishes work on Barbarella. After that, he's supposed to be doing another kid's movie (be it "The Jetsons" or "Land of the Lost" or something else). As for Madman and the oft-mentioned Johnny Depp-starring "Blind Gunman" films, who knows?

How does one type the sound of sucking Robert Rodriguez and QT's cock all at once? Honestly, though, this sounds rad as hell, but FUCK, Harry, you have no journalistic credibility. It's like, "I heard news." That should be it, and an opinion, sure. Not, "And then I called Rob-We TOTALLY hang out all the tim-and he was like, "Yeah." No wonder everybody on the internet is laughing at you, sir. I hate to be so cynical, but FUCK, man, stop it. we all know you know RR, QT, and so many others. Stop reminding us. Pretty much, your reviews don't count anymore. They're a joke, bordering on self-parody in their idiocy. My advice: JoBlo. JoBlo is a perfect mix of news and opinion, without the blatant conflict of interest. So yeah.

Spandau - good job, especially including an American Idol reference, that was very accurate. Next time be sure to mention the giant sunglasses that girls wear now, that is my latest obsession. I want to invent a sunglass that is just one giant head-sized lens with a little hole in the middle to stick the nose through.

But even though I am a cranky old sonofabitch I am not against bringing back the character of Barbarella as long as they cast her right. Which is gonna be tough, but we'll see.

I'm not so sure about Rodriguez directing. I like alot of his movies, and he does have a talent for teasing (DESPERADO sex scene, Titty Twister snake dance, etc.) but otherwise I don't really see how his sensibilities match Barbarella. My biggest concern with him is actually the effects. It's cool that he has his own effects company in his backyard and everything, but his tend to be pretty cheesy. They either need to be psychedelic cool like the original or some modern variation, and I don't know if he has the eye for either. But maybe he can prove me wrong.

I like CatVutt's idea of Prince doing the soundtrack.

Also I got a question for all you who keep getting mad that people don't know about the comic strip. Have you read the comic strip, or are you just trying to show off? If you've really read it, is it really so different from the classic Jane Fonda masterpiece? If so, explain how. Because my sources tell me they are pretty similar, and I've seen enough pictures to see that Barbarella looked like Jane Fonda even before the movie was made, that it was full of the same kinds of costumes and psychedelic space shit, etc.

Could happen especailly in today's family friendly climate. Unless Rodriguez can keep the costs low with his FX trickery. Then maybe he'll get an R. Sounds stupid that it would be PG-13 and be called Barbarella, but there are no guarantees these days.

for the soundtrack, 'cept they already did that dreadful Electric Barbarella...maybe they should be given the chance to redeem themselves, now that they're re-united and all (are they still?)And hopefully those freaky dolls return, those things were great. And that crazy fuzzy-carpet spaceship is a must. Oh and that big gun of hers that she never actually used. And as stated already, a greater emphasis should be placed on tits in this one. Boobies are foundational in this case.

Dear Robert, To start, I've been a huge fan of your work from the beginning. I've been there on opening day for every one of your films and have left the theater in film geek glee. You showed us all that anyone can make a movie as long as you've got 7,000 bucks and a shit-load of gumption. Now that your ass has been kissed in an honest and true fashion, I ask you one thing. Please, please cast Diora Baird as Barbarella. As a film geek I want three things in my sci-fi adventure movies: hot, big breasted red heads in tight-ass spacesuits... those hot, big breasted red heads kicking ass with karate chops and guns... and someone at the helm who has the technical skills to make said sci-fi adventure thrilling, funny and jaw dropping on every level. That said-- You + Diora Baird + Barbarella = classic. Take one look at a photo of this girl... she IS Barbarella. I know its never about ticket sales and all that Hollywood bullshit... I know I can't speak for everyone who comes to this site but I can tell you that a large majority of our asses will be in seats on opening weekend if she's in this. This being said, I'll be there opening weekend no matter what... but I only ask that you please consider this casting choice. You have not steered me wrong over the years and nor would I you. Again, thank you for giving me such a great time at the movies over the years and I hope you'll consider my plea. Thanks, Kirby

Definitely. Problem is - we all seem to want him to cast an actress who hasn't yet gotten her kit off. I could see Alba in the part, but she won't do nudity. Scarlet is totally wrong on so many levels. I very much think though, that it'll be someone from his back catalogue of stars who'll take it on. Carla is a pretty safe bet. PS - Flame away, I hated Sin City. Bruce Willis was the only good thing in it.

Scarlet can't carry a film
by Spandau Belly
May 23rd, 2007
08:36:59 AM
She's only ever been a co-lead at most. I never saw 'The Island', but from what I hear it was really flat and boring. Don't tell me it was Michael Bay's style either. If you watch 'The Rock' you'll see that charismatic actors like Nicholas Cage and old James Bond can use their acting powers to break on through Bay's style and still deliver funny character moments in an otherwise incoherent mess. It can be done.

Scarlet just isn't supercharismatic in a blockbuster big screen kind of way. She's only suited to supporting roles in indie/Woody Allen films.

There's different types of actors, some who are good at actually acting and some who can deliver fun blockbuster goofy performances. Few can do both. Somebody like Nicholas Cage is a great example of an actor who can't act but totally seems at home in ridiculous but awesome films such as the great 'Face/Off'.

I don't no anything about this Doira Baird, but she looks great and I'm willing to give a fresh face a try.

And Vern, I'm glad you appreciated my inner-Vern taking the mic for moment.

I know everybody is all upset about SIN CITY 2 (by the way, I saw a headline that said Angelina Jolie is taking a year off, maybe that's related) but I want to know what about fuckin MACHETE? Is he still gonna try to whip that out? That should be shot MARIACHI style but with the better cast and using those badass cameras you know he has laying around the house, so it won't be as hard. I think he could do it but WILL he do it?

Harry, you should get the word on MACHETE. Ever since the financial failure but artistic success of G****HOUSE, America has been nervous about its fate. Danny Trejo has been going around still saying it's a go, but we need reassurance.

But this story has brought out some real fucked up idea's. I'll paraphrase my favorites : " I would really like to see someone make Ranxerox,it's about an underage girl who has lots of sex and would be nude most of the time, but no one's brave enough to make it" Followed by : "Such and such director was to much of a pussy to make Ranxerox,it deserves to be NC 17" and my favorite : "Lindsey Lohan would have been great in this when she was under age,now she's too old". So I guess if RR wants to make us happy he'll make Barberella a hard R starring a 12 yeard old girl with plenty of Hentai style monster rape. Wow, I guess i'm the only one that would like to see a grown woman play the lead? I guess the hopes of seeing someone like Heather Graham or Drew Berrymore in the part, having alot of straight or even lesbian sex on screen isn't kinky or sexy enough. Weird fucking world that we live in now.

Barberella is grand as the campy classic it is-sure it aint perfect but its okay as the bizzare oddity it is. It doesnt need a "hard R" realsitic revamp ala Batman, I think theres a lot more fans of the kitsch 60's stuff than there is of the comic book....and if you do like the comic, then you'll always have that, it sint like they've taken it away form you...hmm, Im starting to stop making sense...oh, you get the idea!

There's a huge demand for it and most of the cast is reprising their roles so there's little casting left. If Angelina wants a year off to save the world and won't play Ava, then get Rebecca Romijn, she was a better choice for the role anyway. Rodriguez makes like 50 movies a year.

Dude, opinions are like assholes - everybody has one and they all stink. Well, not *my* asshole because I wax and polish my anus on a regular basis. But opinions are fair game. Not everyone has the same tastes. I respect your takes on Cuaron, Innaritu, and Del Toro even though I disagree to some extent. They are all talented, I just happen to believe some people grant certain directors an almost God-like status that places them beyond criticism (see Sam Raimi) which is ridiculous. Everyone has room for improvement. That's part of the creative process - striving for perfection even though it is a totally subjective medium. I think Cuaron is a talented auteur but storytelling is his weakness - which could be easily remedied through tighter editing. Plus he took all the fun out of the Harry Potter universe which in my humble opinion was a gross miscalculation. To me, Innaritu is a much more compelling storyteller. He may not be as accomplished as Cuaron from a technical standpoint, but I think he understands the narrative process much better. As for Del Toro, I would hardly call Pan's Labyrinth "heartless, mechanical, and plastic" but hey, that's just my personal take. If you thought it was a steaming turd that's cool. Just out of curiosity, what's your take on Rodriguez? Anyway, there's no need to get your panties in a bunch just because you disagree with someone's opinion. These talkbacks are all about discussing our love (or hate) of films after all. Party on bro...

I'm glad Rodriguez will be directing an R-rated science fiction movie, no doubt. But since it's a re-imagining, can't we change its name from "Barbarella" to something else? Seriously, Barbarella is just a terrible name. It reeks of 1970s sweat and disco, cocaine, and white people boogying on the dancefloor. Maybe Rodriguez could change "Barbarella" to something equally retarded yet less 1970s? Maybe something Spanish? Mexican?

Please, just don't call this re-imagining "Barbarella." I'm begging you!

I think I was quibbling over terminology, not showing off.

No, I haven't read the comics. I don't speak or read Canadienne and was a couple years too young to be buying adults only material in '68, when a translation of the first Graphic Album was released here in conjunction with the movie. (Although I did turn 18 in time for the underground comix revolution.)

Yes, the Vadim film was a reasonably accurate adaptation, based on the little I've seen from the comics. And yes, I hope the Rodriguez film, even if updated to current tastes and interests, will also be reasonably faithful to the source material.

My main point has always been, if two films are based on Hamlet, that doesn't make one a remake of the other one. Did you think the Daniel Craig Casino Royale was a remake of the David Niven comedy or the Barry Nelson 1954 television play? I didn't, I think they were just all based on the same Ian Fleming novel.

I am so excited....
