but according to IMDb, Hall played a character nicknamed the geek in a Molly Ringwald movie 23 years ago. Nice obscure gen-X pop culture reference, very Dennis Miller.

Although now I'm disapointed that Joe Simon's idealistic living ragpile Brother Power, The Geek, isn't going to be in the Batman movie. Maybe they can write him into an episode of The Batman.

Let's just have all villians in this movie. Spider-Man 3 times ten. John C. Reilly as Clayface. Robin Williams as The Mad Hatter. Phillip Seymour Hoffman as The Penguin. Patrick Stewart as Mr. Freeze. Amy Adams as Poison Ivy. Jennifer Garner as Harley Quinn. Wesley Snipes as Man-Bat!

Wow. I feel old. There are people on here that don't know who Anthony Michael Hall is? Geek from Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles, jock in Beetle Juice...how do you people find FAMILY GUY funny w/o knowing these references. Who's he gonna be playin? Hmmm...The Question possibility some one rose got my geek blood flowing, thought I doubt that's the case. Some one know? Hmm. Riddler seems obvious, but that's ALOT of baggage for a movie that is supposed to have the Scarecrow coming back too...probably more minor.

If his character is in scenes with Lucius Fox, I'm guessing scientist-type, so I'll place bets on pre-Man-Bat Langstrom rather than the Riddler. And I know it's canon, but I wish they'd move away from the Riddler being named Edward Nigma, it's such a contrivance, just so you get the E. Nigma pun in. Most of the other villains have at least semi-believable names. At least make Edward Nigma an alias the Riddler uses when 'in character' rather than his real name. /end rant/

I like the rogues gallery they've got set in motion. Scarecrow's still around, Joker's on deck and Two Face is on the horizon. Riddler or Penguin or Catwoman or Mr. Freeze or Clayface or whomever (Robin or Batgirl too for that matter) will just negate the tone they're after, no matter how you present them. Keep it simple and it'll work - stock it full of bullshit cartoon characters and we're right back to square Schumacher.

because I didn't know who the Geek from Sixteen Candles was. Feel young. Anthony Michael Hall wasn't from "before my time", he was from after. The question is, do you remember Brother Power, The Geek. Very short lived hippy era DC Silver Age character created by Captain America co-creator Joe Simon. Fairly obscure baby boomer pop culture reference, but I think he popped up during the Brit pack invasion in a Swamp Thing annual or a one-shot special or something.

He's pretty good in The Dead Zone, even if it's not a great show. Maybe he's playing Johnny Smith in The Dark Knight - a short scene where he touches Bruce Wayne's hand and tells him he'll still be fighting crime in his seventies, he'll have a teenage girl for a sidekick, and he'll whup Superman's boy scout ass.

...yet. Maybe he'll show up in an Edward Nygma cameo, setting up the Riddler's appearance for the third movie. Like they set the stage for the Joker in this one. I can think of better actors to play the character, but I can think of many, many worse ones, too (such as Jim Carrey).

It's been a while since I read that one. At least you got it - I'm happy with that.

Also, some of the other suggestions are pretty funny. Rusty Griswald? I had totally forgotten he played him. I'd also like to know what's going on with that dork out of Weird Science, so there's another known character who could make an appearance. In fact, fuck Batman, just use the newfangled CGI melarkey to make a film where a bunch of old Anthony Michael Hall characters get together and have some comical adventures.

If they ever interpret a version of Clayface III......
by JDanielP
May 21st, 2007
08:16:13 AM
...they should get someone tall with the right voice. Liam Neeson would be perfect for Clayface III ...but not only was he in BATMAN BEGINS, but he once played DARKMAN (and what an enjoyable ride that was). But allow me to say that I wouldn't mind one bit if they reversed the order of the Clayfaces. I just know that the studio wouldn't want to repeat the Sandman from "SPIDER-MAN 3", ...so I say reverse the order. Clayface III was/is a great villain, with the combination of insanity and genius, along with the powerful exoskeleton he wears to contain his form.

I suppose its hard to mention his name without thinking Breafast or Candles, having been a tweenie during this period. But I remember his outstanding performance as Bill Gate in TNT's Pirates of Silicon Valley. He was excellent. I am not a big watcher of the Dead Zone, but that's just my weariness of all the supernatural that has flooded TV drama (with Psych being an awesomw parody of it all). But I have watched a few and found Hall to be excellent there as well. He seems to have left all of his outlandish antics of the Geek behind him and plays the silent confident mental genius. Think background strategist rather than front page criminal. I see him in the nosy reporter postition. Only much more intelligent than say what Wuhl played in the Burton piece.

I actually think he has MUCH to much personality to be the Ventriloquist/Scarface. Although this could be an AWESOME on screen duo. They are one of my most favorite from the Timm universe. But the idea of Queen being a "wannabe" batman is kinda awesome. I'm a big fan of the non-power superheros. Bring in Vigilante. Maybe he will be Vandal Savage? That could be kinda wild.

AMH maybe plays the Asst. DA who betrays Dent to the mob? His scenes with Morgan could be the DA's office investigating Wayne Corp. before Dent knows who Wayne really is (spoiler alert: Bruce Wayne is Batman). I don't think he's a scientist or future villain.

I bet that's it. No way it's a zany villain. And remember, at the end of Begins, Lucius Fox became the CEO of Wayne Industries, not just a scientist. So the scenes with Freeman are probably Wayne Industries related. And if they are setting up Two-Face for the Third movie, then 2 has to do with his origin. I think people are right on the Long Halloween plot with Joker smearing dent. Would anyone else think it were cool if Rutger Hauer's character became Blight from Batman Beyond? That would be an AWESOME villain for Wayne.

AMH won't be a villain. Maybe he's a scientist at Wayne Enterprises who discovers who Batman is because of what he sees Fox doing. Then, being in some kind of financial trouble, he tells the Joker for the money. Ok well that is villainous but he won't be a known character.

I like the point about "escalation" in TDK. In the world of Mob Bosses Joker will be the catalyst towards Gotham becoming a breeding ground for "freaks". Im moving towards AMH being someone like Calender Man or some other nut.

Hmm, what would a list of Batman Rogues in the realistic Nolan world be?

Joker

Scarecrow

Zsasz

Calender Man

Riddler (?)

Penguin (?)

Catwoman

Ventriloquist

I could see all of these finding some kind of realistic interpretation. What other Characters might make the jump to this Bat world? Who wouldnt? I dont see Poison Ivy, Mr Freeze, Croc making the jump.

I'd going to go with The Riddler.

Some nice scenes with Will Smith before he became Mr. 'Aw hell no.'

Brother Power was DC and pretty trippy - I couldn't decide whether that comic was pro-hippie or anti-hippie since it made them look so silly. Very much a product of its time.

I have a hard time seeing AMH as a villain, mostly because of that pesky lisp. And I don't see the Riddler in the Nolan films, unless they reimagine him as a puzzle maker, like some aspects of BTAS. Clayface probably wouldn't happen in Nolan's 'verse either, too much like Sandman. Though if he ever did show up, I'd cast the voice from BTAS - Ron Perlman! I have no desire to see Catwoman or Penguin in this series either, though I could see reimagining Penguin as the British arms dealer. Just as long as he's not a Burtonesque freak of nature. Hell, maybe even Catwoman if she's just a very good, athletic thief who does NOT have a cat outfit or a whip. And she can never meow, unless she does it ironically.

Although I would like to see Solomun Grundy.

That would rock. Maybe they've already cast him for "Green Arrow: Super-Max" and are going to use The Dark Knight as a funky way of announcing it, as well as starting to tie all the DC franchises together. That would make sense with the "200 million dollar reveal" bit. Were they to have him as Oliver Queen in a cameo in The Dark Knight and then used him in main roles for SuperMax and Justice League, then the $200 mill comment makes perfect sense. Hall has enough of a fanbase (through Dead Zone and his Hughes flicks) to warrant giving him a chance to front a superhero movie of his own anyway and I would certainly watch it.

But this guy was the last person I'd imagine to play a serial killer villain - I keep on picturing him with his curly hair, bouncing around, singing about social topics. Anthony Michael Hall...John Paul Valley--Azrael...
by TrueBatman
May 21st, 2007
11:11:48 PM
Think about the clues we've been given. Hall has referred to his character as a "Batman wanna be." Next, he mentions that he has a scene with Morgan Freeman/Lucius Fox (maybe to get gear/armor like Bruce did). Next, think about what Batman-on-Film posted months ago -- Batman will have to change his costume halfway through the movie AND it will be a MAJOR plot point. Then, THE DARK KNIGHT is part II of a III part story, which means, with the Harvey Dent throughline there will definitely be a cliffhanger (maybe a la EMPIRE STRIKES BACK). Last, Anthony Michael Hall has blonde hair. Now, put this all together -- a blonde-haired Batman wanna-be involved in a major plot twist with a NEW COSTUME. Hellllllllooooooooooooo PEOPLE, can anyone say Jean Paul Valley a.k.a. Azrael a.k.a. THE BATMAN (replacement when Bruce got his back broken)???????????? Yes, this is a stretch, but Goyer and Nolan know their Bat-mythos and it fits perfectly with the theme of escalation. AND would give the DARK KNIGHT his darkest night yet -- the potential end of his career. What better than to end the film with Bruce in a hospital and Azrael Batman going psycho on Gotham -- causing Gordon and the police force to hunt him down (not knowing it's not the real Batman), and then in Part III Batman has to reclaim his mantle. Granted, there's no Bane in this script (or maybe Hall is Bane)...but Bat-Azrael is on nobody's radar and it makes sense... If Anthony Hall mentioned the character's name we would ALL know what's coming... Anyway, that's my theory.

Riddler would be redundant with Joker in the movie. Nolan would know that, I'm sure, no matter how far the stray from comics interpretation. Given the physicality, the fact that the Tetch / Hatter character is a tech guy and Hall said he worked with Morgan Freeman -- Lucius Foxx of Applied Sciences -- it makes sense. It would also be a villain easy to do realistically but still not be a villain nobody knows, sort of like Ra's Al Ghul in "Begins."

The end of The Dark Knight ends the same as Begins, sort of. Joker has been defeated and thought to be dead? Maroni has attacked Dent in court with acid. We see Dent rushed to hospital and Maroni sent down. So the final scene is set on the roof of the G.P.D. Batman and Gordon are talking about the fate of the Joker and then Batman exits. We then stay with gordon looking out over a night time Gotham city, he shakes his head slightly when suddenly, Two Face springs from the shadows grabing Gordon around the neck. He demands to know who Batman really is. Gordon tells him that he has no idea, to this we see Two Face drag Gordon over towards the edge of the building and Gordon pleads for his life. In the stuggle Gordon kicks the spot light that has the bat signal on it. Two face dosnt notice this. As he holds Gordon over the edge, he takes a coin from his pocket and flips it into the air. We follow the coin as it flips up in the air, the bat signal can be seen behind it in the clouds. Cue credits.

Bane is a wank character, an afterthought created for one of the worst arcs in Batman's history in order to emulate the commercial success of The Death of Superman. And just like Doomsday, attempts to integrate Bane to Batman lore as some sort of a psycho-nemesis that haunts Batman's nightmares have been risible and ridiculous. "He is huge, and he is hard, and he is the destroyer of all he surveys." Big. Fucking. Whoop. The most important achievement of Batman Begins achieved was rid Batman of the stiltedness that haunted him in not just the Burtonverse, but many other similar incarnations in the comics. The villains were not camp, which meant the actors portraying them did not have to overact against an inherently somber, and cinematically dull, character. The whole universe was subdued, which, ironically, made Batman a more colourful and better rounded character than ever before. If Hall is The Ridller, which I doubt he is but still, then I hope his addition does not destroy the fine, delicate balance set in Batman Begins.

...though I can't remember his name. It's been too long ago...and I'm not going to search my comic book collection for the answer.
Having seen the pic of the Joker...

Two thoughts come to mind. One - that is absolutely unlike any interpretation of the Joker I expected. Two - that pic scares the flipping fuck out of me. It does away with any clownish/goofy aspect of the character and looks 110% "unhinged serial killer" im my opinion. His eyes look dead and remorseless. The severed mouth is non-symetrical and just looks vicious.. I can't wait to see how his face winds up like that. If its self inflicted as the rumors seem to indicate.. wow. It would take one seriously, seriously fucked up individual to do that to his own face. I still need to see and hear Heath in motion to be completely sold.. but I have to admit, if the point of DK's Joker is to be scary, that pic is proof positive that they're on the right track.
More than a cameo...

Read what he says. He has only done one day of shooting so far. He is going to re-join the production when it films in Chacago and he did not indicate how long he will be there. I think that he will be throughout the movie, and if it is the "$200 million dollar surprise" he says he is, that makes me think there will be some kind of "reveal". like he's not who we think he is at first. or he is some mysterious shadow character who makes himself know later in the movie. am I over-thinking this?
But an UNDERDOG photo deserves it's own headline here?

I'm just saying that the lame UNDERDOG "scoop" a few months ago was welded to the AICN homepage...but no Joker?

tv talk show host, Letterman clone. Dent is on the show, Joker calls in. Jokers' gang kill some cops, then kills some more at the funeral. Now THAT'S funny. Alfred stitches Bats again like darning sox, D.A. Dent makes Gordon Comissioner. Rachael show just why she's a great D.A. Same old police procedural. Shooting in Chicago from next week. Follow the explosions on the street. The Gotham City SWAT trucks could be a clue too.

Two face? Think about it. They start as very good friends, who can possibly... Greatly affect the story-line... And then, BAM.
