It's like you're a professional, or something. This film looks great and I cant wait to see it with a theatre full of sugar-crazed monster children.
I'm actually looking forward to this one.

Next time, grab a shuttle to the Coliseum BART station. Take the train to MacArthur ($1.80), and there's a free bus-- the Emery-Go-Round-- that goes right past Pixar's front gate. When you're done, catch the next EGR back to BART and your trip to downtown SF costs $2.95.

over the years it's been great watching your transformation from a film geek to a writer and parent to a professional who hasn't forgoten his roots. The last few months or so, your articles have been the stand-out of this site because you maintain the wide-eyed fan ideal, while still staying grounded. In this case, I truly feel that I can take my 5-y.o. daughter to see Ratatouille (we both disliked Cars and have avoided other animated fare) because of this article. Excuse me now, while I wipe the brown off my nose...

As an added bonus, there's the WALL-E trailer to look forward to (hopefully).

Speaking of Pixar and sequels, Toy Story 3 will be their first sequel in 10 years. That's saying something. And they could have easily made sequels to their movies if they wanted to.

Anyway, I would love to see a sequel to The Incredibles, but if there's never going to be one, I can live with that.

I had the pleasure of visiting Pixar a little over a month ago. While I was there, they happened to be doing a test for this new audio animatronic figure to go in the parks (Beaker and prof. Bunsen) in the main lobby area. So naturally, everyone was outside, including John Lasseter, Pete Docter, Andy Stanton (along with their respective families). 100 people at least in that lobby...imagine the sheer amount of talent that was in that room. Not to mention Steve Purcell, creator of Sam and Max. One of the best days I've ever had, bar none (and I used to see celebs while working at disney all the time...)

but all other Pixar films have been amazing. Just watched Nemo again the other day with the kids. The images, the undersea colors, just brilliant. It boggles the mind to think how much work went into making something as simple as an anemone in CGI, with hue, texture, motion, everything just right--not to mention all the other aquatic life. Damn Pixar rules. Now, if only they'd make a stompkata movie, or Incredibles 2, or Toy Story 3, or a lesbian film.
I'd agree that Cars is their only real disappointment.

Looks great, but way too corny, predictable and forumulaic. I expect more from Pixar. This looks like a step in the right direction. And Wall-E looks like a huge risk, odd title and supposedly big chunks of the movie with no dialogue. Sounds pretty weird, I'm curious what they end up with for the final product.

Great report, Mori. Loved reading your descriptions of the inner workings of Pixar. I'm basically a fan of all their movies, my favorite being "The Incredibles," and I'm excited to see where their animation and storytelling go in the future.

Brad Bird sounds like a great guy. Directors don't have to be "great guys" to be great directors, but it's nice to read about a guy in Hollywood who's doing what he loves to do. More power to him.

Question: I read that Pixar might branch out into PG-13 or even R-rated movies, into science fiction or other visually striking genres, so does anyone know if this is true? I loved the 9-minute animation of "Ratatouille," and I'll definitely be seeing it with my nephews, but I'd be excited to know what's on Pixar's palette coming soon.

Also, everyone should check out Lou Romano's blog. Great work, Lou!

Human Characters

I love the direction Pixar's gone with their human characters. They give each of them a nice stylized look, but they don't go overboard on them. They know that these are cartoons, and don't try to make photo-real characters, just believable ones. Dreamworks could learn a lesson or three from Pixar in that department. The humans from the Shrek movies remain as some of the blandest, inept character designs ever put to film.
I would love to see Pixar branch out more

I don't want them to stop doing the family fare they do so well, but how cool would it be if they did more adult stories? Not meaning violence or foul language, just adult sci-fi or fantasy.

... yep. That's him.

That sort of dovetails what I was saying above. Patton's been a working stand-up for over a decade now, but his biggest fame comes from that sitcom, which is hardly indicative of his work as a whole. And now, RATATOUILLE will probably break him to a whole new audience again. Interesting time to be him, I'd say.

For A Long Time....

Pixar's offices used to be located in Pt. Richmond. You would have had a very expensive cabfare if that was still the case. I'm really looking forward to this movie. I saw the 9 minute trailer, and I found the animation to be exceptional. The scene were Remy is throwing in all the spices into the soup - flying around the kitchen - brilliant. I love the Pixar shorts though. They don't have to sustain the brilliance for 1 hour, 30 minutes - so it's extremely clever and witty for a short time and never stands the chance of getting dull. Alot of people haven't seen the 1st short, Luxo JR, that came to be their logo, it shows how far they have come with their animation, but still has that same cleverness that Pixar is famous for.
