I wonder whether, with everything they're seeing on the nightly news, people will really want to watch a savage war flick for entertainment right now. A horror movie with blood spewing everywhere? Sure, why not. That's all in fun. But combat violence? I don't know. Nicely done, though. Excellent work on Stallone's part.

That's one of the goriest things I've ever seen. My favorite is when he takes out the guy in the front seat of the military vehicle and the guy cameos for the next couple shots as splatter on the gun. No matter what, bonus points for going that extra mile. It's sad that it's been so long since we've seen real gore in an action film that it comes as a shock to see it here, but I guess Sly can use that shock value for all its worth in this one.

Ok. one of my favorite characters is back. BUT, the footage looks like a Grindhouse trailer. Kinda like Hobo With a Shotgun. People exploding in a rain of blood? C'mon. Despite what people think, Rambo was not about killing for the sake of it and Kayro syrup flying through the air. It was a man pushed too far.Think about it. you never saw David Caruso's head explode. Or even the Russian in in part II. I'm diggin the premise and LOVED Balboa. Mr. Stallone please put as much heart into this as the latter. Based on this trailer though, it seems more like Missing in Action 6.Hope this gets read.

... not at all.

Look, the original FIRST BLOOD has little or nothing to do with the other films in the series. By the time they made that first sequel, Rambo had already evolved into a superhero. This looks bloody as hell and it's actually pretty nice-looking. If Sly delivers a film that lives up to the "Holy shit!" quotient of this promo trailer, then I'm in. I had no expectations for this, but I really enjoyed it as a piece of wild gory '80s throwback action.

It just waited until it downloaded it all to display the video. Ok... I like the gore.. which.. for an M-50 at close range is going for a more realistic view of the situation imo. It would definately tear a person in half with one shot much less a couple. The main thing that concerns me are these nameless faceless Burmese Villains. Other than being Asain #12321 for Rambo to rip the throat out of/slice the guts out of/arrow the shit out of... where is the personal connection between them and him? And I don't mean just via the humanitarian group. Where is the leader? Is there anybody to challenge Rambo, at least in charisma, or is this just a drawn out setup followed by a glorified squash match? And while the rhythmic beatdown of many Asian men is appealing to some I would hope there is a bit more behind it storywise then just what was shown.

The footage looks really good. You've really come into your own as a director. With regards to the violence, I like that this is an adult movie, and Rambo at his most extreme. To make this movie exceptional instead of just another action movie, give him a method to his madness. He seems really pissed off, and hopefully, there's a reason to it. Maybe all the years of being a pawn and a killing machine have tipped him over the edge, maybe living a mad world has made him nihlistic and lose all value for human life, maybe he's having flashbacks and he's just completely lost all control of his mind. Whatever the reason, give him complexity, and make sense of the senseless violence to raise this movie to another level. Either way, it looks good and I'll see it. One minor qualm is Rambo's wardrobe; I don't really like the loose hanging T-shirts. This is a minor detail, but I'm just giving you all possible feedback. Cheers.

I thought I was looking forward to this movie before, but I can't WAIT now! That trailer was one of the most awesome I've ever seen, and pretty much extinguished any doubts I had about this project. This ain't gonna be no half-assed PG-13 effort, but an all-out ACTION MOVIE for the first time in years! BIG THANKS to Sly for sharing this footage with us! One thing, though: I really hope Jerry Goldsmith's theme music is used in the final movie as well. Wouldn't feel like "Rambo" without it.

When all others tone down their sequels in order to get their precious PG-13 rating, Sly says FUCK OFF and turns the gore factor all the way up. But these are a collection of some of the goriest moments in the movie (I suspect) boiled down to a few seconds, so of course it will strike harder. I can't wait for this thing.

Rambo poundering over the scripture reading and then cutting to him creeping up behind that soldier is very exciting and my favorite part. Well done. I hope those scared words, through voiceover or whatever, haunt Rambo...in a good way. It's a nice contrast in the midst of all that hell. I remember reading LEFT TO TELL and how the brutality allowed the most profound awekening in the author. I'm not saying Rambo has to see god or anything but meeting and helping this christian workers is proably the best thing that could have happened to the evolution of John Rambo especially as he trys to make sense of a life time of blood n guts during his twighlight years. I hope there is a deep thread throughout all that intense brutatlity. It would take things to a whole new level.Possibilities are endless. Hope the ediing goes well, Sly ! I love how you cut the killing of the rapist. Edgy. Brings to mind Scorses's Cape Fear for some reason. Your loyal fans are behind you. Go for it ! Peace, Jazz

it degenerates into some cheezy DTV synth drum vamp and kills that 'Big Picture' vibe. Not too keen on the look, First Blood is beautifully shot, I was hoping it would have an edgier moodier look. Pretty hardcore violence, just as long as it's 'necessary to the plot' I don't have any issues with it, War is visceral and brutal, and it's in line with the progression from 80's action to contemporary fare. I just hope it's more akin to the first film in tone and not some jar-headed neanderthal action flick.

07:15:24 AM
I loved the first Rambo flick, it was so gritty and felt very real. The sequel's didnt really work for me and I wasnt sure how John Rambo would work out...from the looks of it, pretty fuckin' great! What a trailer, that's how you sell your movie kids. It has character, plotting and kick-ass action. I really love what Sly is doing at the minute, Rocky Balboa was such a great film, again feeling very personal and respectful to the characters. I'm positive this film will be in the same vain. Dont get me wrong I dug the trailer for Die Hard 4.0 but it looks really expensive and maybe alittle over the top (hey its Hollywoood right) but this trailer just feels so much more basic (not cheap! definatly not cheap) it's hard to describe....I guess it just looks fuckin cool. iIt feels like Rambo in Grindhouse style, the editing, the music, the way it has been shot and the text at the end just rocked. Not enough good things to say really. Good Job Sly and I'm definatly up for this!!!

Rip off the head of every enemy?" I agree, but should you be saying in the name of Allah? Pattani, Thailand - Islamic insurgents on Monday shot dead a Thai-Buddhist couple working as fruit pickers in the majority-Muslim area of Bannang Sata, Yala provine and injured their three-year-old daughter, police said. After gunning down Praphan Ponlarak, 36, and his wife Chaddakan, the assailants decapitated Praphan, making him the 29th victim to be beheaded in Thailand's troubled deep South since the region's separatist insurgency took a turn for the worse in January 2004. Their daughter was admitted to Bannang Sata hospital, 780 kilometres south of Bangkok, for treatment

...a good supply of body bags!" Loving what I'm seeing Sly, keep it up. I'm so sick to the hind teeth of "pretty-pouty-boy" action heroes. Hell, we 80's kids ARE being spoiled! What with Transformers looking good, Die Hard 4.0 and now this. Film snobs can sniff all they want, this is the shit I grew up on and still love going to see. I've always found that each J.J.Rambo flick has mixed it up regarding gritty/high end action with a smattering of social commentary. Again, the film snobs can scoff all they like. All I ask is that Sly uses some of the much-loved motifs and themes by the sorely missed maestro Mr. Jerry Goldsmith. That would really be the icing on the cake. I just wish Richard Crenna were around for the ride too. Stick with it Sly, the critics don't know shit. Rocky Balboa proved once again that your good self and fans are right. Can't wait! What a kick-ass trailer. Sure, toning movies down may bring in a few extra dollars, but let's also face fact. Stallone isn't an actor that draws the young audience for good looks, or being a 'metrosexual' hero. No, this is going to be for the older die-hard fans such as myself. Fans that have stuck through the good and bad times, but fans who, as was the case with Rocky, will pay to see a no holds barred action movie. It's brutal - I love it - keep it up. Finally - Sly, please don't ignore Australia. I hear that you banned Australian press recently from your Rocky DVD launch due to the drugs case. Remember you have a legion of fans here - and Australian fans can be pretty damn vocal on a world stage. We would love to see you back here one day!

Though I absolutely love most of what I see in these clips I have a few concerns. (1) The color schemes in some of the forrest sequences look a little too bland, like they were shot in my back yard. I hope this is due to the fact you haven't colortimed the movie yet. Burma needs some warm tones. (2) the music at the end was horrible. I know that it's most likely some temp track found on myspace but it still concerns me that whoever edited this thing chose to use such horrible music. Please let the soundtrack be heavily Goldsmith inspired. I love those classic sad tunes and would hate to see them missing from the final film. Other than this, I CANNOT WAIT!!!!

dont wimp out on the rating here. This NEEDS to stir people up and get them talking. Thats exactly what worked for Rocky Balboa. People were EXPECTING the film to die on its ass, to show Sly up and I hate to say it but I think a lot of people went to see it out of morbid curiosity - "lets watch the old guy get slapped around for 2 hrs"... this needs to be as, or even more, impressive a fuck off to those people than RB was...

80's Action vs 2000
by Kizeesh
May 19th, 2007
09:05:16 AM
The gore is right back in those 80's powerhouse action-movie stylee'. I thik that in the wake of Saving Private Ryan and Black Hawk Down, the film world has really taken a turn for the realism uber alles. Its great to see the schlock violence of the old style coming back, and i really think it's been missed. When you take it to that much of an extreme it becomes almost comic-book hyper-reality.

LFoDH (or DH 4.0 over here in the UK) has gone for a completely different look. It's far more modernised, but the Die Hard Films did change progressively over the years to suit the current tastes, look at DH1 vs DH2 vs DH WaV. in the same way they've ramped it up to suit the modern appeal which is a gritty looking darkly styled 24-alike vision. Rambo would never have suited that.

When did a NC-17 movie ever make money? Fuck sake, the film is going to be a hard R you can't ask for more. If it were NC-17 you would be asking for it to be x rated and incorporate a scene where Rambo instigates animal rape. The Die Hard ratings fiasco makes sense but when people start calling for films like this to be NC-17 you make the whole AICN community look like morons.

That way JOHN RAMBO can pull a SPIDER-MAN 3 type massive launch on the worldwide box-office audience. Last but not least Sly, I know you and Governor Schwarzenegger see each other on a regular basis, so if Arnie is planning on coming back to films after his term is up in 2010, give him some good advice on how to "come back" and kick the audiences ass real hard by making KING CONAN as fucking BLOODY and HARD R like JOHN RAMBO. I hope what we get is a feature length version of that footage. I do have to agree with those who feel that some of that will get re-edited, though. Which is a bit silly; if you shoot a guy that many times (especially at close range) with a .50 caliber machine gun... well *that's* all that'll be left of him.

SpencerTrilby: I wouldn't be too worried about a so-called "Christain" angle. When you see Ken Howard reciting scripture; just think of it as the same way "Tomstone" used Revelation. It's very much like when Kurt Russell as Wyatt Earp was yelling, "I'm coming! And hell's coming with me!"

It's just a non-comical version of, "Here come the judge." Or in this case total retribution and payback for the bad guys, in the form of John Rambo.

Honestly I was doubtful. I mean Rocky Balboba was great and unexpected. John Rambo on the other hand I was a bit leery. Looks like Sly proved me wrong. Good christ that was just, wow. Count me in opening day for this one. A real throw back to what looks like a true action film.

Me and Vern have been going at it about Transformers and he made a comment how he blames Bay for the decline of most modern action films in todays day and age. While I am not a Bay fan I thought that was a bit of a stretch on his part as I think John Woo is to blame for all that slow-mo action bullshit with the shaky cam nod going to Bay. But with this teaser of John Rambo I think me and Vern will agree that this is one action movie that does not seem to suffer from any modern day film making. This looks about as classic as you can get and could inspire a new generation of action film makers if this movie as a whole is as good as that teaser just was.

This movie will for SURE get a Hard "R". Great job Sly, great job. :-)

PLEASE, let there be a lot of Goldsmith's themes in this movie. That's all I ask. His scores from the films are very underrated, and they're absolutely terrific. Take a cue from what John Ottman did with the Superman music for Superman Returns. Unless of course this is already the case.
Also, I want to see Trautman addressed in this movie. Like in Rocky Balboa, will we see Rambo at the grave of his only friend in the whole world? I hope so (and think you're smart enough to address this in the film).

Awesome, Mr. Stallone I salute you, you went back to your roots and delivered with Rocky Balboa, big time. Now it looks like you're about to put the balls back into modern action films, none of this castrated PG-13 nonsense like your friend Bruce is giving us in Live Free or Die Hard (no offence, I like the guy, he's a fine actor, but his new movie looks like shit). Aside from the glorious violence (please don't cut it before it's released) the film looks very good, well shot, good dialogue, and what seems to be an even darker, more bitter Rambo. By the way, come back and do the question thing again with us, Bruce has done OK, but his stuff is too sanitised, whereas you just told it how it is, and man! it was hugely entertaining, still the best thing this site has ever done.

The gore is right up there with the best horror/slasher pics. That's good.

The action is fast-paced (judging from the preview alone). I hope the rest of the movie is as action-packed.

The story-line seems OK, but is still a bit vague.(again, only seeing the preview, and not reading the script). I don't want to ruin it for myself, so that's OK, too.

It's probably not going to win any awards for best pic. Obviously it's going to be a fun popcorn movie. I'm OK with that, too. I don't always watch movies that are in contention for awards. Sometimes I watch movies for a bit of escapism, just hoping to be entertained for a couple of hours.

I agree that this is not just a return to form for the franchise. It does look 'dialed up' a few notches. I liked Rambo I and II (III, not-so-much, but I did see it), so it'll be good to see what happens next.

A question for Sly:

It seems like you're getting completion on some of the fan's favorite characters. Does this mean that you'll be retiring soon, or are you just looking to move away from the action-hero genre and move on to other, more diverse roles?

Someone finally has the balls to make a movie again!!!

Not slash and gore per se, but a movie that focuses on the darkest part of the human psyche and a person's relationship with killing others. Kind of like how AMERICAN PSYCHO was a horror movie in that it explored the twisted fragments of the mind of that main character. John Rambo is not an "action hero" anymore, it seems. Sly, it looks like you've decided to delve into a more honest portrayal of a killing machine- warts and all. If that's the case, then congratulations on making a risky and hopefully well-rewarded choice. Best of luck!

In the news of the Iraq war (and others) we're getting a sanitized story. We as civilians have been getting a "clean" war story for a long time, and this film is going to shock us into remembering that war is BLOODY, HORRIBLE, and not glamorous and all-heroic. This film is showing us the horror, the gore, the truth of war.

That's it, Sly Stallone is a fucking genius. He knew that we needed decades in the interim, noth for the audience, the actor and the character to be ready, but fuck me if he hasn't asolutely look to have nailed John Rambo as well. This 1-2 combo of revisiting his most iconic characters has (with the 20x20 questions as well, of course) elevated my opinion of Sly immeasurably. My respect for the man is now right up there with Richard Burton, Stanley Baker, and Mel Gibson.

To finally give closure to his story? Oh yeah and is this one retconning Rambo 3 since he apparently starts in Thailand again? I hope so. Anyway this was great, Rambo looks insane and pissed and the violence is just like the 80s. Loved the shot of the guy getting shot with the arrow and falling on the land mine, nice change-up of the exploding arrows in part 2. ^^;

Yeah, the action is great.Love it. I'll be there opening day. But I also liked all the character stuff, which was one of the strong points of the first Rambo movie. Frankly, if we don't care about the characters, then all the violence in the world will become tedious in about 15 minutes. Way to go Sly! Congrats.

Very wary of this... thought it was Stallone going back to the well one to many times. Hey, if Rocky Balboa worked why not John rambo... that being said, loved the first half of the trailer, the downtrodden Rambo just waiting to die, thought stallone was very effective, i expected to laugh at it but did not. The violence was very very gory, but that's not my problem. My problem is that it had the feel of a direct to video movie in the second half. Hopefully when the footage is spliced and touched up it will look better. But again, really liked the first half.

That was so beautiful it made me tear up a little.

Mr. Stallone, a few notes:

1) Don't listen to the tools in this talkback calling for an NC17. We're not ALL stupid and most of us support your right to make money. This looks hard R and God bless you for it.

2) Speaking of God... I actually like the Christian angle a lot but there's a fine line with it... if you're going to go there then GO THERE. Make them humanitarians... include scripture etc... but consult with church leaders and specifically MISSION FIELD leaders... the people who actually sent missionaries. Not just greenpeace or the Peace Corp or whatever.

Because if you start with the Christian stuff but then you water them down in their faith, or make them conflicted, or whatever that Hollywood so often likes to do to Christians to make the people less sympathetic, well, I think you'd do that to the detriment of the film.

I love Jesus and I love a good hard R violent action movie as escapism. But I hate it when people disrespect my faith or water down what should be a good hard R violent action movie as escapism. Be my hero.

SLY, don't mind the gore, but use it in a more engaging fashion. Most of them look too 'set up'. It's like gore for the sake of gore. "look how cool the gore is"**** the scene with the 50 cal WORKS though, that is awesome. The rest seem like it's trying too hard. Good luck, ROCKY BALBOA was great.

Judging by this huge talkback and positive word from these jaded talkbackers, Sly you have a mega hit with JOHN RAMBO. I bet you Bruce Willis and you will talk about the rating his last DIE HARD film is getting flack for. Sly, while you're at it, let Governor Schwarzenegger know that he should get Paul Verhoeven or James Cameron to direct CRUSADE (the script Arnie owns)like JOHN RAMBO. Religious and bad ass!

This might easily get slapped with an NC-17 if the rest of the movie is that intense and in-your-face gory and violent. Hopefully the us distributor (apparently Lionsgate) won't puss out if that happens. Attractive looking production values on display - it's interesting to see Millennium Films start making actual movies instead of direct-to-cable junk. Stallone clearly had a respectable if not huge budget here.

Mr. Rambo, welcome back - weeeeeee've mmmmissed you... Sly, don't let the gore fetishists and borderline racists put you off keeping the film as brutal and intense as this trailer would suggest that the film is. While the aforementioned folks do get off on stuff like this, lots of regular, balanced folks do too. Looks like an intense and fantastic couple of hours in the theater - count me in. Also, I'm pretty sure I heard a "HhuuuuaaAAAARRggghhh!!!" in there somewhere, which made it solid gold for me.

I LOVE this trailer BUT c'mon. The hair extensions, the pansy clean shaven look? The jet black hair. The fackin $2.99 extra large Fruit of the Loom t-shirt? John Rambo (when in killing machine mode) is just that -- a KILLING MACHINE. Rewatch first blood and part II. The scene where he's tying his shoes in PREPARATION for battle is the one of the best action sequences of the last twenty years IWTH NO ACTION. BRING THE FACKIN HURT. Stallone, you are built like a fackin BEAR for this one. Let's see that bear. I don't want to see some aging hippy clean shaven Jerry Garcia lookalike ripping people's throats out. NOT because it sucked, but because it was so fucking amazing, i wanna see this on the big screen, in all its bloody glory. unfuckinbelievable. after rambo, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE keep making your own movies!!! i cannot wait, and i emailed my friends to all watch this trailer. i only wish this film was coming out in a few weeks, because im dying to open up the file and watch the rest of the trailer, but i will hold off! bravo stallone.

I fucking loved it, Sly. This has the hallmark of a great revenge/hostage don't mess with our badass hero movie. It's funny that I only watched First Blood the other night and even though I loved the story, I couldn't help think that the direction and fighting scenes looked just a little too staged. Now fast-forward to present day and "this" Rambo has grown some big hairy balls and they look real. Just like the recent good Bond movie this Rambo admits it doesn't bother him killing... "When you're pushed, killing is as easy as breathing." Now that's how I like my anti-heroes. I'll be seeing this aswell as buying the dvd. Based on this segment this could even be the best movie of this year!! Am I over-reacting here?

I can't tell you how absolutly psyched I am for this! The gore, the blood, one man army goodness, I think even as an NC-17 I think this could do well especially if marketed the right way. But I do think a "Hard R" would be an appropriate rating. But even at an NC-17 I think this film is for such a specific audience that it would do very well at that rating and the dvd sales will be quite good as well. I also agree that working with the original scores would do wonders for the film, much like Superman Returns worked with the iconic themes from the original. Keep it rough and raw on this one, awesome work Sly! And Rocky Balboa was one of my favorite films to come out in a while!

Overall a good trailer. This is a 3 minute snippet of the film, so I'm hesitabt to make any sweeping judgements. But it appears you've got something with great potential. On your hands here. Which is why it is all the more important that John Rambo be more than a "senseless killing machine" in order for this film to really rise above "splatterhouse" level.

It looks like you've got a hint of that characterization in the trailer (showing John's religious side). Hopefully there is enough of that in the film for the audience to undertsnad the path Rambo chooses to take.

well done, Mr. Stallone.

You have the war on terror, and John Rambo goes to BURMA? What about Rambo being recruited by Delta Force to lead a team back into Afghanistan to take out a Taliban Cell, or Going into North Korea to take down a nuclear weapons depot? Make it as real as "Black Hawk Down". Make him a part of a team. Have someone like Al Pacino, Gene Hackman, James Caan or Denzel Washington play his C.O. to take over the Crenna spot. You could have an amazing moment where Rambo is at Arlington paying his respects to Trautman at his grave...With all due respect to Sly, why should we care about John Rambo fighting in Burma? I mean, the action looks just like more torture porn when Rambo doesn't take out an enemy we can know or root against? There are so many better stories to be told with Rambo than this one to me.

Stallone wants it both ways. At first he seems to be positioning this movie the same way he did Rocky Balboa, as a more dramatic, soulful return to a character that had become a caricature. Except, apparently, he also wants this more soulful Rambo to be the same kind of killing machine he was in the 80s. At least in the 80s, noone took this shit seriously, except, of course, for Stallone, who thought he was making grand political statements. This time it looks like he wants to have a dramatic character study, except rather than deliver an actual character, like he was able to accomplish in Balboa, he's merely pretending to add soul and dimension to a cartoon. Rambo does not have the capacity to be realistic or meaningful, despite the inclusion of yet another "righteous vengeance" plot. If the movie were nothing BUT the over-the-top violence, that's fine. But pretending to elevate it with the bullshit dramatic claptrap in the first half of that footage just makes the whole thing even more absurd.

No offense to Sly or anyone at AICN, but all that trailer needed was some sort of ending. If it had one it could have been the shortest effective movie ever. That preview kicked all sorts of ass and I will totally be watching it day 1. It's what Rambo should have been doing in the other movies. My real critique would be to lose the A-Team font at the end and don't use the catch phrase "Attacking Soon". Well don't use them together.

It's just not Rambo until you hear the grunting. But when he's firing guns AND grunting with a distorted and squished up look on his face: that's Rambo!!! However, in all honesty, the text in the GI Joe font at the end of the trailer was pretty hokey. Rambo's lacking some of the edge in his voice too (the gritted teeth, the breathy, drooly, raging voice).
