By the way, New York explodes.
by Napoleon Park
May 18th, 2007
10:23:38 PM
By the way, New York blows up and 0.07% of the human population dies. That's not a spoiler, it's a prediction.

Look, Hiro Nakamura is a screw up. He couldn't save Charlie. He lost his powers once he convinced himself he needed an arbitrary good luck talisman (the sword) to make them work. He couldn't kill Sylar with a sword to his neck.

And future Hiro spent years constructing his 3-D time line to determine the exact point to change past events, and the best he came up with was accosting Peter on a subway? And we're supposed to believe he got that one thing right?

Once Future Hiro appeared in the past, the future he came back from became a lock; otherwise he never came back from it to try to prevent it. He screwed up. People have free will and can change or determine their own futures, but when Future Hiro showed up, the present became his past; unchangeable.

Superboy tried to save Abraham Lincoln and failed. In Moorcock's "Behold The Man" an atheist went back to disprove the life of Jesus, was mistaken for the person he was seeking, performed some modern scientific "miracles" and was killed on the cross, creating the past he doubted. The past can be rewritten, but never changed. (he proved his doubts right, but created the religion he questioned.)

Superman did not literally spin the earth backwards; doing that would not reverse the flow of time, just wreck the planet. He did go back in time and save Lois, because Puzo needed one big 'miracle' to top anything in the comics - so he did the one thing the comics said he couldn't do.

That's the difference between hard science fiction and sci-fi super-hero comics.

Of course, "Heroes" isn't hard science fiction, it is a super-hero property. So maybe future Hiro was right, saving Claire was the key and Peter and/or Sylar don't blow up and New York isn't destroyed after all.

See, I told you it wasn't a spoiler.

i really think a satisfying season finale at this point is a lay-up. the show's been great and as long as we see a face off between peter and sylar, and have some kind of conclusion to the exploding man storyline, we'll all be happy. however i would like to see the whole "save the cheerleader, save the world" prophecy figure in to the ending somehow. the show really took off when they dropped that phrase and i'd really like to see it not turn out to be just some throw-away line.

Episode order for marathon: http://www.scifi.com/scheduleb ot/index.php3?date=19-MAY-2007

Sci-Fi is NOT starting the marathon with the Pilot episode at 9AM Saturday. At 9AM "Homecoming" (episode #9) is the first episode of the marathon, then the eps. run in order all the way til 10PM with "Landslide" (episode #22), the most recent episode. After that, at 11PM, the Pilot, "Genesis" Episode #1 airs, followed by Eps. 2-7 in order.

And if you want to complete the marathon yourself, you can watch Ep. #8 "Seven Minutes to Midnight" (and all eps. actually) online at: http://www.nbc.com/Video/rewin d/full_episodes/heroes_02.shtm l?show=heroes08

Heroes really picked up steam in the third quarter

and has been a runaway train heading into the home stretch. But really, other than an occasional cool stunt of surprise ending, the first half of the season was slow going. A large ensemble cast spread all over the country, slowly discovering their abilities. The cast almost never meeting one another. Some cool moments... Future Hiro in the subway car, Nathan's first flight, Claire on the autopsy table... but a lot of exposition and a lot of characters we didn't really care about at first. Mohinder's mac & cheese delivering neighbor (until she turned out to be a traitor). Micah and DL. A junkie pop artist with time to paint and create an indy comic? His agent? Establishing peter was a nurse only to have him immediately quit his job? Claire's whole high school arc and her gay best male pal dropped when his memory was erased? The days when no one knew who HRG was or if he was a goodie or a baddy? Claire and Hiro becoming the shows breakout stars, only to have Hiro lose confidence in his powers and embark on a quest to find his good luck sword? And Niki/Jessica was much more interesting as a Jekyll and Hyde schizo amnesiac character. I tuned in with the debut and stuck with it, and was rewarded, but really, slow going in the first half.

The pace really picked up once everyone knew what they could do. Once they introduced Sylar. The build up to the introduction of Linderman.

it is interesting, though, that the two best episodes of the series were the two oddball change of pace episodes. "Company Man", that went the L*** route and dealt with one set of characters and used extensive flashbacks. And "Five Years Gone", the speculative possible future episode. The two bet episodes were completely atypical and non-standard for the usually formulaic series.

I figured this was the appropriate talkback for a series overview, and that's how I saw it. Best new series of the year, but with some minor flaws that prevents it from being the best show on TV.

Good weekend for TV, the season finale of SNL, Simpsons 400, Bree's back on DH... But I'm really looking forward to Monday. *** (and then, Wednesday. Because, if Heroes isn't the best show on TV, do I have to tell you what is?)

They dealt with that phrase and its importance in "5 Years Gone" when Future Hiro told present Hiro that he tried to kill Sylar with the sword, but he just healed himself. So he had to stop Sylar from getting the cheerleaders healing power so when he stabbed him with the sword, it would stick (no pun intended).

... how did he just walk away from the fall at homecoming that "killed" Peter? Furthermore, what happened that time when Parkman unloaded his weapon into Sylar in the steam tunnels and our boy just got up and--seemingly--flew away? Could that be a glitch in the Matrix of this wonderfully plotted show? Or, could it have been FutureSylar? Did FutureSylar eat FutureHiro's brain and then come back in time? Or could it possibly have been FuturePeter? What the heck? Either way, there's still the issue with the fall at homecoming. I really dig the show but I sure hope they clear that part up. Any theories, anyone? Oh, and "hi". Been lurking forever but this show's finally drawn me into a Talkback (and I feel so cheap, is that normal?)

Friends and family will soon be unable to remember the last time they saw you. You will be unable to watch a show without simultaneously TalkBacking. The Life you knew is gone.

You will get over feeling cheap eventually. But you will meet cool people like Chrth and Mr. Nice Gaius (MNG) and others....

I am told that if you keep a separate computer to use ONLY for online porn and Talkbacks, it will help you compartmentalize your new dark nature, while pretending to lead a normal existence in the daylight. I agree. I just hope they can finish with a bang, wrap up some of those nagging doubts, maybe even surprise us a bit, and set it up for an amazing second season. This season was the 'origin' story, which is interesting, but always a little slow. Now that we know who the characters are, and what they can do, we can get down to the business of watching them do their thing.
Let it grow.

Whenever a show gets canceled after 3,5 or 13 episodes the defenders dust off the same examples: It took time for MASH to find an audience, it took time for Seinfeld to grow and mature into the show it became. From now on, "Heroes" is the new example of a show that took time to improve and go from good to better.

Those jerks who post to talk-backs just to say they've decided to stop watching a show were almost justified in the first month or two - you had to be a comics enthusiast and know how it takes time for these things to develop in order to be patient with the crawling pace. But the drop-outs won't know what they're missing until they see the DVDs, because the second half of this season turned the show into riviting "must see" appointment television. I feel sorry for the "24" fans who both missed out on this show but, from what I hear, got handed a rather poor follow-up to last years blockbuster season. If "24" had another "best season ever" they'd be justified in missing out on "Heroes", but as it is, well, they just missed out.

(I checked out the Sarah Connor Chronicles" clip posted here; when she says "Save me, save my son!" I'm hearing "Save my cheerleader, save my world!")

If Hiro can travel through time AND space...
by Napoleon Park

Once he fine-tunes his control, he can be a better teleporter than Kurt Wagner. Think about it, he brings a sword to a gun fight, his foe pulls a gun and fires... and Hiro moves through time and space... to the other side of the room, half a second later. Stops time, chop, slice, what'cha gonna do with a hand gun now, Dr. No Hands?

If masi ever gets a movie deal and decided to move on, here's his final scene: Hiro is in a fight with a superior swordsman, barely holding his own, when suddenly he sees himself materialize behind his opponent and attack. the foe turns, strikes and future Hiro dies. Present Hiro sees himself die, then strikes his foe down from behind while his back is turned. Now Hiro goes on with his life, making his rounds, saying his goodbyes, knowing that sometime in the near future he HAS to go back and join the fight... and die... in order to distract his enemy so he can defeat him. Hiro gets final scenes with peter, Claire, Ando, saying his farewells. Very touching. He doesn't want to go into the past to die, but it's a closed loop; it's locked, he's seen it happen.

Since they're not showing Ep 8, I taped the first 7 for her to watch (since she'll have plenty of time at home over the next several months) and if she wants to continue -- although I'll encourage her to reach at least through episode 11 -- she'll watch them online.

I'd been watching since the beginning, but it's nice to be able to see everything being built up. This is one of the first serialized shows I've been watching, and it's great seeing how everything has been laid out even since the pilot. I'm just surprised they didn't have the guy who plays Sylar dub his voice into episode two when mohinder finds a recording from Sylar on his answering machine. If Lucas had done it we'd be getting a CGI sylar inserted into the pilot. I just wish sci-fi had started the marathon from episode 1 onward.

I thought I'd like Hiro the best based on what I've heard, but I found myself interested in Pete the most. Honorable mention has to go to Ando as well. I don't know how you can be human and not love Ando. He's going to die, isn't he? Both I and my friend watching with me picked Mohinder's friend as a spy of some sort though, just seemed like such an obvious ploy. Jessica and Micah (and now DL) seem almost like a darker side to these heroes, as I can't see them trying to save any cheerleaders anytime soon. Heroes, you have a new fan in me.

Claire in the Garbage Disposal, Bouncy on the Bidet.
by Napoleon Park
May 20th, 2007
03:55:36 PM
I read that the company that manufactures the garbage disposal Claire got her hand mangled in (so we could watch it heal) was upset and threatened to sue (because their devices actually have a safety feature in place that would prevent something like that from happening), so the show agreed to edit that episode for future airings and the DVD release so the brand name wouldn't be seen. I'm sure a lot of you taped or TiVo'd these. It's a very minor point, but was that from the deleted episode 1.8? Was that scene shown, and it was it edited so the garbage disposal brand name was not seen? (Maybe someone who taped/TiVo'd and hasn't watched it yet will do so and keep an eye out for that detail?) Does anyone still have the original broadcast of their episode, taped or on their TiVo or burned to disc? It's no big deal, just a cute little "rarity", like that Bouncy On The Bidet album special edition with the banned song she got sued over.
Heroes will be running a little long tomorrow night...
by Napoleon Park
May 20th, 2007
04:53:57 PM
Quick program alert.

If you tape or Tivo "Heroes" bcause there's nothing else on Monday night and you can't be bothered to sit down and watch TV for just one show... or if you watch "24" and tape "Heroes"... of if you're collecting the series so you won't have to buy the DVDs... be warned that this will be one of those episodes that runs a few minutes long for no apparent reason. Has there ever been one of these shows so tightly constructed that every moment was essential and it would be impossible to find a couple minutes of material to trim? I think not, but then that's a pet peeve of mine.

Anyway, "Heroes", NBC, from Nine O'Clock (9:00 pm est) until whenever they feel like ending it. About five minutes overlap should be more than enough.

You won't want to miss the big explosion. Not that anyone believes they're actually going to do that.

But this may be the cliffhanger that keeps fans of the series talking all summer; it has been reported widely enough that this isn't really a spoiler, that the final three minutes of Chapter One (the first season) will be repeated in the fall as the first three minutes of "Chapter Two" (the half season story arc before the hiatus that leads into the spin-off "Heroes: Origins" series that fills the gap until the post-hiatus "Chapter Three" concludes the season.)
