Nice to see that I officially now have one less network to keep track of when scheduling shows to watch. I guess a show like Veronica Mars didn't have enough recycled who's fucking who storylines a la Smallville or One Tree Hill to satisfy the retarded monkeys who put the schedules into the Excel spreadsheets every season. The only show I have any hope for that's left on CW is Supernatural, but I'm not holding my breath on that returning either. I never thought I'd see the day where I would look fondly back and say that (shiver) UPN was a more daring and risk taking network. CW...you've officially joined the ranks of shitty renewal decisions right next to Fox. That's right, watch the CW - Creative Wasteland television. /end rant /yeah, I know it's just a show. Shut up.

That is almost the final insult, isn't it? That we can't have something smart like Veronica Mars - because of America's Next Top Anorexic or The Search for the Next Singing Whore in Leather? Hopefully we'll at least be seeing Ms. Bell in many things to come...

Fucking BAD day for me. Jericho and Veronica both gone. Dont give a shit what the haters say. I really enjoyed both these shows and will miss them both. I watch a LOT of genre stuff but man this double whammy really hurts. As stupid as Jericho was at times- it had a BIG heart. I really fucking enjoyed the characters on both these shows. But fuck it- there are always new shows to jump onboard. Im thankful to get 3 great seasons of Veronica and who'd have thought Jericho would even make it a full season? At least Ive still got: FNL, Lost, Heroes, The Office, 30 Rock, Weeds, Dexter, Its Always Sunny, Supernatural, Doctor Who, Torchwood, BSG, Eureka, The 4400, Primeval, Entourage & Bloodties (yes I watch it, so what). Goodbye Logan, Weevil, Sheriff Lamb, Veronica and the rest! Bring on Sarah Conner and some other crazy shows.

That way, when Studio 60, and Drive, and Veronica Mars, and Raines, and The Class gets cancelled I can scratch my head, and say to my blow up doll "What's Veronica Mars? And why is it taking up valuable wrestling airtime on the CW. Oh yes, and pass the fucking America's Next Top Model cereal."

I thought I'd read the response to the FBI pitch increased its chances. There's a cold place in hell waiting for CW executives, first not giving Amy Sherman-Palladino what she wanted for the final season (which sucked without her, big surprise). Now they're offing their best show. I would be very surprised if a show comes along that makes me watch the CW again, which is surprising since I used to think it was under-the-radar heaven for cult shows, Buffy, Angel, and Veronica, and smarter-than-you'd-expect soaps Gilmore, Felicity, and hell even the first two seasons of Dawson's had me hooked. I wouldn't think a fledgling network like CW could afford to off its best-reviewed show and maintain any dignity in the critics' eyes, but I guess it's all about the bling bling from Cover Girl and Neutrogena.

The network, while not having VM on their schedule have not offically cancelled it, and don't have to make an actual decision until June 15, giving Rob Thomas time to write a fourth season premiere to show them. I'm personally just assuming it's done with to not get my hopes up, but if Thomas DOES write this script, he better please post it on his website, so we can at least see what he would have done with everything.

"Last night at ABC's upfront bash, a high-level Warner Bros. executive confirmed what I first reported yesterday: It's entirely possible that the CW will delay a decision on Mars' fate until after Thursday's upfront. Contractually, the net has until June 15 to reach a verdict, and the extra time would allow Rob Thomas to produce an actual script for VM in the FBI. That's one scenario. The other scenario is that the show is dead. I think we can all agree that Scenario One is preferable. While I agree with the notion that Veronica Mars, as a show, is dead and won't be back...there are still the linering rumours that the 4th season would be a whole new show. I see no reason that the supposed "4th Season" with Veronica as a rookie FBI couldn't end up with a different name since the show is completely different. They could keep the character named Veronica Mars and just treat it as a whole new show. So technically the original idea could show up but it just wouldn't be called Veronica Mars. Nothing is certain of course, but it wouldn't surprise me if that is what they did. The FBI 4th season wasn't going to have any returning characters anyway. So why bothering keeping the shows name is everything else was totally different.

Question: I don't understand you. First, you reported that Veronica Mars' chance of survival had gone from "so-so" to "pretty good." Now with the news that Rob Thomas has been asked to run a new pilot on CBS, VM’s chances have gone back down to "slim." What gives?— Gina Olson Ausiello: What did I tell you about shooting the messenger? The messenger is just doing his job. The messenger is good. And the messenger has an update: Last night at ABC's upfront bash, a high-level Warner Bros. executive confirmed what I first reported yesterday: It's entirely possible that the CW will delay a decision on Mars' fate until after Thursday's upfront. Contractually, the net has until June 15 to reach a verdict, and the extra time would allow Rob Thomas to produce an actual script for VM in the FBI. That's one scenario. I tried watching this show last week. It was the Paul Rudd episode. I turned it on with an open mind and it just didn't do it for me. I'm a firm believer in that you can watch the first 5 or 10 minutes of a show and be able to tell if you like it. That's how I found House, and Arrested Development, and The Office. I also tried to give Jericho a chance and just couldn't get into it. So with that said, I know a lot of you loved this show, and I'm sorry for your loss.

The reason why these shows got canceled, is because NO ONE WAS WATCHING THEM! If that weren't the case, then the ratings would be higher, and those shows that you love so dearly would be back on the fall schedule. Veronica Mars, Arrested Development, and all the rest of these low-rated shows were all canceled not because of some heartless and cruel TV executives in New York who enjoys making you fan-boys squirm in your seats. It is because of the low ratings these shows got over the course of the year. My advice to you is to get a life, quit whining, and get over it.

You and I are the holdouts, hoping for more from our entertainment, and we'll always be disappointed, because the lowest common denominator has always ruled TV and movies. More people will pay for mindless melodrama, thrills and bathroom humor than a show that challenges or gives us a role model in both the character and the person who plays her.

I picked up on this show mid-way through it's first year after hearing all the good buzz and I loved it. Got both season sets and will get S3, (they'd damn well better release it). All I can say now is that , mercifully, we won't have to endure any more of that Kotex lounge (whatever) crap or the thing they had last night with that tabloid reporter in the fright wig. Obviously, if Dawn Ostroff and her team of super-bright executives thought VM's audience was composed entirely of 14 year-old girls, then they don't belong in charge of anything more culturally significant than 'The Search For the Next Inflatable Doll.' Perhaps VM could find a new home somewhere that doesn't suck?

The fact is people do watch low-rated shows. Just not 'Nielson Families' whoever they hell they are. Is anyone reading this one of them or know of any? They don't represent me or any wage earning consumers I associate with. I've long felt that a new system should be developed (maybe through Tivo or something)that would provide a more accurate sampling of America's tastes. The Nielson system should (along with the Electoral College) be abandoned and thrown on the scrapheap.

C.C asked: "(are there any shows left on CW now, but Supernatural and Pussycat Dolls?)"

Good question. the virtually simultaneous loss of The Gilmore Girls, 7th heaven and Veronica Mars is a significant blow to the network's line-up. The CW network is home to the popular "America's Next Top Model" franchise. - - - - - They have a well established 'urban' sit-com line-up on Monday, anchored by "Everybody Hates Chris" - - - - - Apparently professional wrestling still holds court on their Friday schedule. - - - - - And a new teen soap opera, "Hidden Palms", debuts on Wednesday, May 30th, according to their web site, >>> http://tinyurl.com/mwdjv > http://www.kidswb.com/

part of the above was cut off for some reason.

Thanks to the inclusion of several DC Comics universe guest stars (Martian Manhunter, Impulse, Cyborg, Aquaman, Green Arrow), the long running and somewhat tired "Smallville" actually enjoyed an increase in it's public profile and the amount of media coverage it attracted this year. (I don't know how that translated into ratings)

Affiliate stations carrying the WB also have one of TV's few Saturday Morning cartoon line-ups, which is still running under the name "the Kids WB" - http://www.kidswb.com/ - Being affilated with Warners, they get first crack at the DC Comics properties like Legion of Superheroes and The Batman, as well as the Loony Tunes characters.

... Veronica Mars in Quantico moves to CBS, TOTALLY ROCKS, falls in good with CSI's without being derivative, CW fumbles, folds. (and I'm liking 'QUANTICO' as a title with Veronica as the star to an ensamble cast of FBI trainees.) Bottom line: CW sucks. nothing else they're doing is any good. Smallville has sucked for a while. I was never able to get into this show either until I sat down with the season 1 DVD. And although I still kind of like it, when people rave about this show, they're talking about the first season. It's like a different show. It was so good, that I knew for certain that the rest couldn't be. This probably should have been designed as a single season show from the start. It had mysteries that kept you engaged.
it would be their only good show

VM is the last holdout for the audience that watched shows like Buffy, Angel, Roswell, and Star Trek on the WB and UPN. Canceling Veronica is basically giving up on that audience entirely. And its a damn shame. Other major networks have picked up that cult audience slack now that serialized scifi/dramas like LOST and HEROES have become so popular, but the loss of Veronica still hurts. Replacing Veronica with the f#@$ing Pussycat Dolls says everything you need to know about where the CW is headed.
Damn! No more Veronica.

I liked Veronica Mars and so did Kevin Smith

Kevin Smith even liked it so much he agreed to be a guest star on several episodes. He played a convenience store clerk, which is fricken brilliant. Veronica Mars is a fun show with some smart script writing. Sure, the main characters are in high school, but don't think that means it lacks compelling drama and intelligent dialog. VM could have been one of the CWs most successful programs, if they had marketed it properly. I'm sad to see them compound their history of bad choices by canceling Veronica Mars.

You're right, but you didn't take into account BSG or Dexter. Oh, and whoever was complaining about great shows getting axed before their time needs to add Action!, Deadwood, and It's Like You know to that list (and I know a Carnivale had its supporters too, but I'm getting my fix of grimness off BSG).

because I think we'll *know, finally* one way or the other. The CW has very little on the bench, drama-wise that can replace whichever fall show tanks. The supposed crash and burn of World According to Barnes tells me they didn't have another good development campaign. I have a feeling that VM just might pull off a comeback to end them all and get 13 final episodes to wrap things up.

she must be "Leftist." Of course you wouldn't be able to stand a show where the lead is a smart, independent woman, Anchorite. Maybe if you actually watched the show and were not a total idiot, you'd see it's probably the best show about young people out there today and will be sorely missed.

I'm sorry. I know you'll just label me a "flamer" but really I'm not. I gave Veronica Mars a fair chance (I watched it until early into the second season) and Jericho (until the hiatus around Christmas) and I think both shows sucked. Mars is so disconnected from any reality its laughable (gotta love that pretty boy gang banger with the heart of gold) and Jericho clearly exists for no reason other than self perpetuation-- about five minutes of plot per hour episode. Sorry, folks, this is in no way intended as a personal insult, but these crapfests deserved nothing less than cancellation.

...but it was pretty much a shadow of its former self when S2 (with the execreble "Donut" romance and "coma baby" plotline) debuted. Couple that with its 12 loyal viewers and it should have died a natural death at least a season and a half ago. I'm not sorry to see it go; I *was* sorry when the wonderful first season turned out to be a total fluke.

< br> The website is called Think Progress. They got their panties in a twist over the "Morning After" episode. Read the article, which was paranoically (not a real word, but I like it) accusing VM of aiding and abetting right-wing criticisms of the morning after pill. The TB that followed is rather telling. People were writing to defend the show, saying it is one of the most Liberal shows on TV.

And as for the characters and story lines being leftist, you need only look at their descriptions and synopses to affirm that. What, you think Veronica Mars is conservative? Are you crazy?

Here's another article, from a website called In These Times.

And Alien and Aliens are a couple of my favorite movies. Talk about strong females...Ever seen Gloria? The original one with Gena Rowlands, directed by her hubby John Cassavetes? All strong female roles, all great movies. Please don't try and paint me as a misogynist just for picking on one particular show.

I don't like Veronica Mars because it falls into the typical Hollywood column of teen shows masquerading as "socially aware", aka Liberal propaganda.

You think it does a good job of realistically portraying young people today? Are you in college or something? Kids today haven't a friggin' clue about the real world. They are no more "in the know" now as they were in the 70's and 80's. If anything, they are increasingly manipulated by the largely Liberal media.

Instead of researching social issues on their own, they are more and more likely to turn to MTV or shows like Veronica Mars or the OC for their social education. Kurt Loder is a poor substitute for bothering to truly learn about social issues. What you would profess to be a show about young people has been ridiculed, even by its fans, as a show that "bears little resemblence to life as I know it" (Stephen King, of all people).

Hey, there's nothing wrong with you enjoying a show. But please lay off the "social significance" BS. That just makes you seem really desperate for affirmation about your viewing choices.

So maybe VM and some of the other canceled shows weren't the best programs, but they weren't any worse than the constantly rehashed CSIs, Law and Orders, and the constantly rehashed crime and court procedurals that seem to be everywhere. Single serving viewing for the fast food nation. When the networks plow ahead with high concept episodic series they tend to flounder and often fail. I can't wait to see more lowest common denominator garbage and recycled concepts. Bionic woman, Reaper (liked it better when it starred Peter Horton and was called Brimstone), another vampire who fights to save people, Beauty and the Geek the sitcom, a Gieco ad sitcom???

The word I'm getting is that it will likely be retooled and given a 13-episode order for midseason to air in 2008. My bet is that it will be about Veronica fresh out of the FBI academy who has to return to Neptune to work her first case. The show will be presented in such a way where the characters are re-introduced, and with few references to past events; it will all feel like a brand-new show for those who have never seen the original series. It will also undergo a title change.

The working title I hear is that it will be: "Neptune" or "Neptune, CA". Notice how in the CW upfront news, "Veronica Mars" has not been officially placed on the canceled/not-returning list along with the other CW shows that have been. Secondly, it's been said that the show won't return "in the FALL". That, too, is technically true -- but doesn't negate the possibility of it returning in January 2008. It's like saying that LOST won't be back this fall. The CW is deciding the fate of this Mars' "reboot" as we speak/type.

to paraphrase you - Hey, there's nothing wrong with you not enjoying a show. But please lay off the "leftist propaganda" BS. I never said it was "socially significant. In fact, these recent 'issue' oriented episodes have been some of the weakest. And I never said it was realistic. But I still think it's one of the best written, cleverest shows about young people with interesting characters and plots.

I thought since you were talking about how it's one of the best shows about young people on TV that you were referring, at least in part, to the subject matter they tackle on a weekly basis. Also, some of the other TBers were talking about how it's so dialed in on social issues. Whatever! And I can't help that the writers and producers have decided to take a decidedly left-wing stance on issues that they bring up on the show. I don't write the stuff - I just call it what it is.

A couple of days late, but in response to your question, my favorite shows which are currently airing are: Studio 60 (but not for long apparently), The Office, Battlestar Galactica (which slipped some this past season but was still mostly good), Hustle, Spooks (aka MI-5), The Shield, Rescue Me, House, and probably a couple others I'm forgetting. Dresden Files had a couple really good episodes (and some awful ones-- they should make it a bit more of an ensemble and shit can the terrible narration.) Back on topic: Believe me, I know what its like to have your favorite shows canceled. Farscape, Firefly, Briscoe County Jr., and Wonderfalls come quickly to mind. It sucks. For what its worth, I hope the rumours of Veronica's return as an F.B.I. agent turn out to be true. Hell, I'll even check it out.
