1) The amount of energy produced by even the greenest renderfarm cluster still produces a shitload of energy. 2) Mo-cap is soooo 2006. It may make for cooler looking films, but ultimately it's about a bunch of people sitting in dark rooms manipulating the action rather than letting actors do their business. Too many cooks spoil the broth. 3) Bring back glove puppets. Carbon neutral AND entertaining! Parp.

An animated Tintin? Fucking lame concept, I'd rather watch again the french cartoon from the 90's. It was perfect for a live-action film (the beginning of Temple of Doom was a live action "Blue Lotus" recreation anyway). Hergé's "ligne claire" style is perfectly conveyable onscreen with a little OLD SCHOOL FILMMAKING, now they use it as a sad excuse for avoiding the REAL challenge of Tintin: bringing to life one dimensional characters who curse, use firearms, live in a timeless world and have no love interest. Which means no guns and no annoying damsell in distress. They won't have my money, for sure.
This could be the most awesome news I've heard in ages.

...will they keep the oblique racism? ^_^ Don't get me wrong, TINTIN was one of the first comics I ever read, and I still love them to this day. But when you're a five year-old you don't really think twice about a book called TINTIN IN THE LAND OF THE COMMUNISTS. Or the fact that every black person is drawn like jazz-era Mickey Mouse. Ah, it should still be fun.

Naruto is similar in concept and art to many previous mangas out there; Tintin is the benchmark of almost every european comic book (before Heavy Metal). I'm not saying that Naruto is shit, just that from an artistic point of view, Tintin is closer from Astro Boy or even Dragon Ball (ok, that's a stretch, but it's almost as influential)

I would take my young children to see the eregon sequel (even though I know it would suck) just on the hope of 10 minutes of quality entertainment. I read voraciously, and I have never even heard of TINTIN. I immidiatly think of that dog from the 18th century when I try to mentally pronounce it. Then I want to fall asleep. This may be the greatest source material in the world. But I am telling you right now that the public won't go because it is called Fucking 'TinTin' and that sounds ridiculous.

Then you, sir, cannot be a geek. In fact, you cannot even be human. Because you have to have been living under A FUCKING ROCK never to have heard of Tintin. Small children and animals have heard of Tintin, and they lack all capacity for speech and understanding. There are as yet undiscovered tribes in the Amazonian rain forest that, when discovered, will be found to own copies of 'Tintin and the Picaros', 'The Broken Ear' and 'The Prisoners of the Sun'. There are worlds in distant galaxies to which the light rays from our Sun have yet to reach, and yet on those worlds, someone has a copy of 'Cigar of the Pharoahs'. Seriously, get off these boards: your geek privileges have been revoked.

Seriously, can't Spielberg and Jackson team up for something else? ANYTHING else? If this series happens, it's the worst news I've read in years. Lifeless, artless, awful. You're going to have to get decent actors for the mocap if it's to work at all so why not just go live-action? A Tintin feature with even half the production values of POTC would rock! No piss poor Polar Express-ing of this property. For fuck's sake, do it right.

Defensive, aren't we? You calling me a bitch is also very 1999 internet message board-esqe. You are such a man I can hardly stand it.

If you both never interfaced properly with Tintin (watching the shitty show doesn't count - it was not a fair representation of the books, and you need to read more than bits and pieces), then neither of you should really comment. You just sound stupid when you say something like I'm a geek, I read a lot of comics but I never heard of Tintin.

The books had intrictate plotlines, action, great characters and humor that worked for both kids and young adults, the bread and butter of the movie business. This is going to be huge, there is just no way around it.

your spot on by holding me accountable on the bitch comment. That is very 1999, I guess was perturbed at you pointing out the typo, and reacted strongly due to the fact I had not seen that type of attack in ages. As to you saying I have no right to comment on TINTIN. Actually, my point is that I am a fan of comics, am relatively well read, have kids the right age to take, and am not enthused. This is very relevant to the talkback as I am in the demographic this project will be trying to capture and so far I am not enthused. Somehow missing TINTIN growing up does not make me an uneducated troglodyte, it means that there may be many others who missed it as well. Now if there is an amazing trailer, and or my kids are somehow dying to go, I would still take them.

...but both Dashing Roger and newc0235 are correct. You can't call yourself a voracious reader and/or a geek while simultaneously saying you've never heard of Tintin without sounding like an ignoramus. You've assured that nobody will ever take anything you ever say on these boards with anything even approaching respect.

Here's a tip for the rest of you who feel comfortable yelling "what the fuck is Tintin?!": before spouting things like that, take a deep breath and go to wikipedia or something before opening your figurative cakeholes, because you sound really stupid and really lazy. I know it's tempting to go for a "cool" I-don't-give-a-fuck attitude, but trust me -- you're not doing yourselves any favors.

but it really is incredibly racist. anyone read 'tit tin in the congo?'? theres a bit where he gets his car stuck on a train track in classic tense cliche, and of course a train literally overflowing with gollywog africans comes hurtling toward the car. in the next moment theres a huge crash! but oh, whats this? tit tin's car is absolutly fine, but the train made by those silly africans is in pieces. the next part tin tin goes hunting and after killing many exotic creatures, realises his rifle doesn't penetrate the hide of a particularily belligerent rhino. does tin tin give up? by jove no! he runs out, gets a stick of dynamite, then hangs down from a tree overhead and drills into the rhino and shoves sticks of dynamite into the gaping wound and runs off. but all that really is part of the charm. it was never meant to be offensive, and most of the time its sweet. it's kind of like a nice old grandad who really isn't racist, but still uses the n-word out of habit. they cannot do a proper film and keep it authentinc. nobody who reads the earliest Tintin books could deny that there aren't some embarrassing stereotypes there. ...in many ways, but so are Robert E. Howard's Conan stories. They were both products of their time for better or worse, but the positive aspects of the stories and characters are timeless.

However, Hergé was never a collaborator other than continuing his newspaper job despite Belgium being occupied by Nazi Germany. He hated fascists as much as communists, and he tried to sneak as much subliminal anti-Axis propaganda into his books as he could.

by Dashing Roger

12:35:45 PM
Well, wow, you've uncovered an amazing fact: books written in the early twentieth century were not as progressive as they should have been. Tintin is racist? So is the fucking Bible, dipshit.

I'm not making excuses for any of it, I am a bleeding heart liberal who finds any kind of racism repugnant. But I also don't go leafing through history to point out the obvious: that people had their heads up their asses many years ago, and still do today.

Obviously, any major motion picture treatment of Tintin won't be culled from any inappropriate material, be it racist, anti-environment, insulting to Greenpeace and PETA, etc. I mean, we've got Spielberg at the helm here - he will use the most politically correct Tintin book of all and still make changes to it to make sure no one is offended.

So relax with the racist accusations. Do you do this every time they make a movie out of a book written before the civil rights movement?

"Why would he POSSIBLY be interested in this crap?" Because this "crap" is part of his childhood, mate. That's what makes Raiders of the lost ark one of his most personal movies. If you think "personal movie" means only Holocaust-themed movie, you're dead wrong. There's nothing more personal, and at the same time universal than childhood memories. That's precisely why he's so succesful. And that's why he teams up with another fanboy-turned-wonderboy filmmaker.

Oh, man, this is a can of worms. The articles in question talk about how the films that were made out of LES AVENTURES DE TINTIN were low key releases. Maybe in the US, but let me tell you, they were a HUGE deal in France and the rest of Europe. It's like saying DARK KNIGHT is a low key adaptation of some comic that some people like a little - typical, myopic reporting from those goddamn la-la-landers. (TINTIN AND THE LAKE OF SHARKS is a masterpiece from my childhood, and the only movie worth a damn – look to the live action adaptations for a good laugh). I'll just say that if Stephen and Peter fuck this up, they'll be burned at the stake - it's that serious. But the idea of mo-cap is absolutely the way to go... what a grand announcement. May I live long enough to see these movies.

As for the racism POV, that's the kind of dumb, dry shit Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would pick out of their crusty asses. You need two things to be a bigot: ignorance, and a bull horn. As a remedy, I suggest reading a history book and shutting the fuck up until you're done.

Well, THERE'S a gross collapsed simplification of what I just said. I suppose farmers who commit suicide because corporations steal their land have nobody to blame for their troubles but themselves either? I really detest the preening American 'philosophy' that nobody has anybody to blame for how their lives are but themselves. The poor are poor because they're lazy; kids who kill are weak, there is no such thing as class, no such thing as racism, no such thing as bigotry; the world is perfect. Bullshit; Falwell and his ilk are hard at work in their re-education camps as we speak, trying to force queer kids to look at heterosexual porn and hate themselves for who they are. And no irrelevent crap about AIDS (which is not even a human agency; it's a virus; do you blame kids in India for getting cholera) is going to change the fact that there is a culture of militant hate in the USA, which is NOT in my country, nor is it in the UK, or Canada, or Spain. And it is strongly rooted in evangelical protestantism.

Tintin is one of the key works of popular art of the 20th century. No, not all volumes are solid artistic gold, the earliest 4 or 5 volumes aren't really any good, and they do contain some dubious racist stuff, which Herge later regretted. Out of the 23 volumes maybe less than 10 would qualify as something approaching real classics when read by modern audiences. But it's not like every page ever drawn by other maverick comics artist like Barks or Kirby or Eisner are solid gold either . And unlike Kirby, at least the golden years of Tintin doesn't have clunky dialogue written by Stan Lee, so they tend to have aged pretty well. Of course the big question is which Tintin volumes they would adapt - the 2 part "Seven Crystal Ball/Prisoners of the Sun", which is the one that had most influence on the Indiana Jones Movies, is probably pretty much a sure bet. But apart from that I'm curious about which ones they'd choose.

"Not satisfied with seducing married women and free-born boys, Nero raped the Vestal Virgin Rubria. He nearly contrived to marry the freedwoman Acte, by`persuading some friends of consular rank to falsely swear that she came of royal stock. Having tried to turn the boy Sporus into a girl by castration, he went through a wedding ceremony with him - dowry, veil and all....the passion he felt for his mother was notorious...so he found a new mistress who was her image...some say that he did indeed commit incest with Agrippina (his sister) every time they rode in the same litter. The Twelve Caesars (Nero 28/29) So he fucked his mother, his sister, he turned boys into girls, raped freedwomen and married women and some free youths. he sounds like a super-pervert to me, but hardly a homosexual.

Other historians refer to his affairs with male actors--you need to do more research, really....don't just do a two minute google search and say you've read 'every' historical resource out there. Anyway--all I have to say is, they better not get Shia to play Tintin. Not that I care.

I think Spielberg and Tintin are a great match. The Tintin books often reminded me of Indiana Jones in some ways. Plus, the Tintin books are just great, period...the characters are wonderful and the stories exciting. I would definitely prefer they be period, though...taking place in the 20s-40s.

It's true that Tintin was never that big in the US.There is an article about it at the PBS site, "Tintin in America": http://www.pbs.org/pov/pov2006 /tintinandi/special_tintinamer ica.html All ages cartoonish adventure strips didn't really do that well in the US between the years 1960 and until "Bone" became a fairly big crossover hit a few years ago. The Superhero genre simply became too all conquering in the US, leaving not much room for anything else. However, It's even stranger that the great Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge comics by US artist Carl Barks have been fairly unknown in US for people who came of age later than 1960. In many European countries, particularly Germany and Scandinavia, those classic duck masterpieces have been as big as The Simpsons or Harry Potter... for the last 50 years or so.

Munich and Private Ryan are okay but not up to classic Spielberg standard. I just don't think the man has what it takes to make a good, timeless motion picture anymore. Hell, he's producing Transformers for Christ's sake. That will most definitely not look good on his resume.

You crazy bastard.

Actually, Ringy did post in one of the Hobbit TBs not too long ago. He seems to only watch AICN for stories on Peter Jackson. And when they appear, he swoops in like a hawk. A very obsessed and deranged hawk.

Here are the posters for both movies (Just remove the spaces in the links):

http ://www.gorianet.it/tintin/dess ins/orange_g.jpg

Althought good standings at the box office, they never made it in the history books, so the franchise was put on the backburner and never came back. But now with this new movie, I wonder what they're going to do with it?.

NOW the repsonse to Doc.. War of the world shit? You gotta be kiding? It was far from shit, this movie had it all and saying it was shit is totally uncalled for. I don't think any piece of "shit" in this world appreciated your comment just now, being lowered to this movie is insulting to the whole shitty community. No, War of the Worlds was a timeless piece of vomitted river of rat's scrotum filled with Andy Dick's anal juice with a touch of his own man milk.

I think you should appologize to the whole "shit" community for comparing them to that movie. That was totally uncalled for.

WTF? You liked War of the Worlds? MOUAAHHHAHAHAHAHAHA!!

Yeah I really liked it when no one else figure out how to change a Starter Cellunoid. Or when the plane crashes and destroys the whole neigborhood but completely misses the minivan... How about the Amry being wipeout but his kid survives the blast... The army guy with all the grenades on him and it takes a mechanic to figure out that this might do some damage to the damn things..

Ok.. I must be an idiot.. For having been fucked out of 10$ to see the damn thing...

I'm guessing you actually have this movie in your "Best movies of all time" DVD rack don't ya? Or maybe you think Andy is one of the best comedians of all time? Yes.. you do have great taste..

I have Suetonius right here in front of me: the Nero section is only thirty pages long, and that's the ONLY section directly referring to his sexual excesses. The rest is about his luxury, his waste, his violence and his obsession with applause. Read it yourself. And I repeat. Nero was not gay by any normal standard of homosexual behavior, and if you think he is, then Jack the Ripper was a normal heterosexual. I couldn't have a conversation this ridiculous with a secular European. And that's a fact.

I grew up reading Asterix when a lot of my friends were reading TinTin. Asterix was always a hell of a lot funnier and the graphic style was incredibly slick; simply beautiful to look at. I always thought TinTin looked a little staid or dull in comparison. I've since come to reappraise TinTin and appreciate it for its very minimalist and controlled graphic style, and, of course, the amazing detail inherent in each tale. Yeah, I'd love to see this done right. It won't be easy to pull off but, if they manage to do so, it will be a unique cinematic experience which may just set new standards in bringing a 2D aesthetic into a 3D world. Better not be f'ing Scooby Doo though. Just looking at that garbage makes me want to punch heads. Here's hoping. And yeah, Steve and Pete, think about Asterix too wouldja?

by Doc_Strange

Cuz to me that just seemed like superfluous filmmaking at its worst. Come on, we spend like 30 minutes or so listening to Robbins' insane rants, then he starts digging a tunnel like it's Shawshank all over again. What the fuck was that? We don't get to see much action in terms of humans vs aliens, which is what the title indicated. Here, I'll reiterate: WAR OF THE WORLDS. Instead all I got was a movie about a shitty father trying to get his kids to their mother. The action, aliens vs. humans, was just filler. The movie sucked balls.

Now that I think about it, I think Spielberg's pitch went something like this: What War of the Worlds is about at its heart is the coming together of an estranged father and his kids. Sound familiar? Very similar to his pitch on Transformers: "At it's heart, Transformers is really about a boy and his first car." WHAT THE FUCK?!?!

Thanks for that. I guess the first thing I think about when thinking of American comics is the Superhero genre. You are right about the Donald Duck/Uncle Scrooge comics, classic stuff there. As for some of the people on here saying they can't believe this is getting made while JLA, Green Lantern and so on aren't, I would assume that apart from Tintin apparently being a personal favourite of Speilberg and Jackson, there must be some monetary motive too. Tintin has sold 200 million or so books in 50 languages while JLA and Green Lantern sell, what, a couple of hundred thousand a month (presumably to mostly the same people each month) in the US and virtually jack anywhere else. Personally I'd love to see a Green Lantern flick but literally nobody I know (mostly non-comic book geeks) have even heard of the character while Tintin has a built in worldwide audience of massive numbers. Having said that, I agree with Clancy up there in that as a kid I always preferred Asterix!

Sorry, couldn't resist - we call Toys R' Us "We Be Toys" to buck the system. I'll accept your premise about Tintin selling more than JLA or Green Lantern comics, but that doesn't necessarily make Tintin more "iconic" a property. Yeah, maybe moreso than GL, but with the Justice League you got Supes and Bats along with some other great characters, and I'd have to say that name recognition worldwide would favor Superman and Batman over Tintin. What do you think?

Speaking of Tin tin and Green Lantern. It's fascinating how those Neal Adams Green Lantern/Green Arrow post-hippie comics made in the early 70s were seen as fairly groundbaking in the US at the time... Yet Herge had been doing his big 'spiritual' inner life masterpiece "Tintin in Tibet" back in 1958, ten year before the hippies wnet crazy for tibet and all that stuff. Originally the book was even supposed to have had an all white cover, much like the Beatles White Album ten years later. Now THAT'S how you're supposed to groundbraking and ahead-of-their-time comics. :)

I like that! Good point about Batman and Superman, they are certainly extremely well known here, and probably more than Tintin (although more from the films and tv than from the comics). I doubt most of the other JLA characters would be recognised by an older general audience (apart from comic book fans) although the cartoon is on the tv a lot these days. Having Batman and Superman in it would still generate interest though. As an aside, I always get the impression that in the USA non-comic book fans tend to think of fans as geeks or nerds, but are aware that many adults read them. Here in the uk most of the homegrown comics (with the exception of things like 2000AD/Judge Dredd) are aimed firmly at young kids. Most people grow up with them but don't move on to the more adult stuff. So if you like reading a comic book now and then (as I do) and you try and tell your (non-comic book fan) mates, rather than say "Hahaha you nerd" or something, they look at you with confusion and say "Why on earth would you want to read a comic? They're for kids". It's on a par with telling them you like pe-school kids books.
